Why are the answers to these poll question so absolute all the time?

What about: "Whatever", "I don't care", "Just win"?

How about: This was a reasonable move to provide some security in a year in which Shanny will evaluate JC to see if he fits in the team's long term plans

Posted by: Salinas1 | March 17, 2010 12:34 PM | Report abuse

LOVE IT.

Experienced back up knows the system. Makes me marginally more optimistic that we take a LT at #4 and a RT at #37.

Offensively, the only absolutely crucial ain't no denying it no-chance-without-fixing glaring holes are starting LT and RT.

Hicks could provide back up support at LT. Heyer has solid experience at RT but has struggled.

It may be no coinsidence that they sign Rex only after this week's practice gets underway.

Posted by: skinfanman | March 17, 2010 12:27 PM

Maybe it's Colt that slow on the uptick? Or maybe it is what it is a signing that they have been working on for the past few weeks to add competition to the QB position.

Posted by: TWISI | March 17, 2010 12:36 PM | Report abuse

It's a good signing. The Redskins needed a second QB with actual NFL game experience (Colt has none).

What does this ultimately mean? Not sure.

It could just be he was brought in as a second option if Campbell is injured or stinks the joint up again... or it could be a sign that they're taking a QB in Round 1 or 2, in which case Campbell is out and the opening day QB depth chart will be Grossman, Rookie, Brennan.

Who knows.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | March 17, 2010 12:36 PM | Report abuse

whatever... this signing isn't that big of a deal. its a 1 year deal... were going to be awful next year... so hes gone after this year ends and we move on. WE need players, 53 of them... and a back up Qb with starting experience (good or bad) is still something every team needs.

Again, a BACKUP qb... Rex is no worse than Todd Collins or Colt Brennan... serioulsy he knows the system and can help teach it to the team... no harm no foul... let it go.

"There was only one OJ in the league"
---------
I assume you're referring to OJ Anderson.

As to this whole line of reasoning, well you could also draft a starting QB in the 5th round. All Shanahan has to do is draft him and start him. Yes, there are busts at every position, but, in spite of the Heath Shulers and Tony Mandariches among us, in theory you should be more likely to get a quality player, whether he's a QB or LT, with a top 5 pick. We are desperate for a quality starting LT.

Posted by: closer44 | March 17, 2010 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Ambivalent. We'll see how it goes and if it keeps the Skins from picking a QB (high) in the draft.

How MAny Chris Johnson's are in the League??

Again...I haven't said this in a while and feel that it needs to be re-itterated...

There are 7 rounds in the NFL Draft. SE-VEN.

Go look up Kyle Calloway. There are atleast 10 Tackles in this year's draft who can start @ LT and Plenty others in the 2nd/3rd/4th rounds who can start @ RT. Sheesh! Heyer was starting on a playoff team as an undrafted RFA....

Just like you guys say we can get a RB in the 5th round...We can get a Tackle outside of the 1st pick.

QAULITY in the TOP 5 OF THE DRAFT...NOT SLOPPY SECONDS...

Posted by: 4thFloor | March 17, 2010 11:54 AM | Report abuse
There are 2 Chris Johnson's in the league. One is rb for Tenn, one is cb for Oakland. So what? There was only one OJ in the league, only one Eric Dickerson. Spiller will most likely not become a 2000 yd rusher.

And of course there are at least 10 OT that could start. Most of them would suck, but they could start. You rarely get a starter at LT outside of the first 2 rounds.

Yes, it really is easier to get a good rb than left OT in the later rounds. In fact, many good rb's are drafted later in the draft. You just don't see many OT's start at LT in their rookie year.

Kyle Callahan is projected to be drafted in 4th round. He will most likely be a project. Most 4th round OT's are projects. They might become a starter, but not in rookie year.

Posted by: frediefritz | March 17, 2010 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Hicks could provide back up support at LT. Heyer has solid experience at RT but has struggled.

Posted by: BrooklynSkins | March 17, 2010 12:35 PM

Supposedly Heyer played with an injured knee all last year.

Posted by: skinfanman | March 17, 2010 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Not a love it/hate it signing but a need signing. Redskins need(ed) a backup QB and they signed one of the better options out there right now. Plain and simple.

Enough w/these dumb polls.

The Skins were going to need to sign a replacement for Collins.

There were a bunch of choices, none special. If Shanahan thinks he knows enough about Grossman to feel like he's the better choice, I'm OK with it.

Don't really know if Okung is all that much better than Bulaga or Trent. If RO is gone, so what if you have to reach a little to fill a desparate need. Only thing is, if McCoy or Suh are sitting there, what a temptation! Berry and McClain are also temptations. Clausen, not so much.

Posted by: skinfanman | March 17, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

My thoughts on the signing of Grossman are this: UMMM ok? Moving on.... I think what Redskin fans are looking for is 2 or 3 mid level free agent signings, that will fill in a couple of holes in key positions. The draft needs to concentrate on OL, QB and secondary positions. In my opinion the Skins should trade the 4th overall pick for a mid or later first round pick and a 3 round pick. They should use the traded pick on a OT, and in the second round pick up a QB that is left. The third round should also be on another OL, and in the later rounds, they should add depth to the secondary and possibly a punt returner type receiver.

Posted by: AldoFaCaldo | March 17, 2010 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Sign closer 44, sign Nate, sign Betty White, sign everyone to a one year, incentive-laden contract.

We can weed them out later...oh yeah, that reminds me, sign Redskins Willie too.

Posted by: closer44 | March 17, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

yeah, come to think of it, if you have this nifty little poll software, that should free you up to write relevant poll questions.

Love it/Hate it does not even apply to this particular signing.

How about:

1. Shows the team is building in the right way.
2. Totally unneccesary.
3. Greg is right, Grossman will be the starter.

Posted by: JohnDinHouston | March 17, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

I agree with all the folks who are reading the tea leaves (releases and signings the past few weeks) and becoming more hopeful about the team drafting O line... setting up the minor heartbreak of watching them pick someone else.

You could also read this as: Campbell gets shipped out for a couple of ham sandwiches (not as good as the deluxe ham sammy I linked to yesterday up here); we pick one of the QBs at #4 overall; Grossman "mentors" the kid QB and maybe starts for the first half of the season or so.

I just threw up in my mouth a little whilst typing that.

Okung, Bulaga, Williams and Davis can probably start at LT.

Campbell had great combine, but not good film at MD. Probably a RT, and not necessarily a starter this year, at least not in Sept.

Charles Brown is still learning, could be good LT, but now a project.

Saffold is probably a RT. Veldheer is an unknown because he didn't face top competition. Both will be selected by end of 2nd round, could be good OT's.

All the rest are probably projects, not ready to start in Sept.

Its time to realize these signings are all vintage George Allen philosophy and then they build through the draft. The team could end up being quite competitive with all these vetern signings. Bruce Allen is so similar to his father, but they are buying these guys on the cheap.

Posted by: gringoinmiami | March 17, 2010 1:03 PM | Report abuse

If the Signing of Rex means we won't be held over a bag should JC want to split next year I'm all for it.

If the signing of Rex means we focus on building up the OL, and other positions of need rather than drafting a rookie QB who likely wouldn't start this year or possibly even next, I'm all for it.

If the Signing of Rex means we intend to trade Jason Campbell for draft picks and intend to bring in someone new perhaps by the draft to groom for the job long term, I am all for that.

If the Signing of Rex means compettition at the QB position this year, I'm all for that.

If the signing of Rex means we cut JC loose without any compensation, I'm not for that.

Posted by: Veretax | March 17, 2010 1:03 PM | Report abuse

Collins was 38 and needed to go.

Brennan is almost 27 and has never taken a snap from center and looked horrible last preseason before going on IR.

Grossman is a 6 year vet with playoff experience who knows the system already.

Can't do much better than that on a one year deal.

Posted by: leopard09 | March 17, 2010 1:10 PM | Report abuse

E. Damn, these pols are simplistic, a waste of time, and generally f*cking stupid.

I think it's a good signing, given his relationship with Kyle Shannahan and Matt LaFleur.

"Love" is way too strong a word though.

Posted by: drischord | March 17, 2010 1:11 PM | Report abuse

why are the only options love it or hate it, can't one of them be don't care?

this is a vet minimum deal for a guy who knows the system and was just coached for a year by our OC and QB coach. Obviously they know what they're getting and who are the other options really? Whether we draft a QB or not this makes perfect sense, at least one person in pads will know the system from day one.

Posted by: zjfr2 | March 17, 2010 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Why the over-the-top silly question? A back up who has spent time in our new O-Q's system, and who comes at a decent price. How could anybody in their right mind "love" or "hate" that? It's fine. Not great, not awful. Just fine.

Love it if it leads to speedy departure of JC17...

..but will hate it if this is the best the Redskin can do in bringing in some competition for the starter's job...

or if it somehow leads JC17 into another year of playing time.

Posted by: Tank2 | March 17, 2010 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Anything that gives us another reason to get rid of Campbell you have to love.. Grossman is fine as a backup... Draft Clausen and let him and Colt battle for the starting spot... so long Campbell

Posted by: sovine08 | March 17, 2010 2:10 PM | Report abuse

I agree with other posts. What a crappy poll. Its a decent signing. Rex makes a good backup. But I definately don't "Love it" or "Hate it".

Posted by: darbs77 | March 17, 2010 2:19 PM | Report abuse

I really don't understand why I read these post (stupidity on my part i guess).

The drafting of Grossman means they have someone who understand/knows the system, end of story, that is it. Also, Colt Brennan WILL be released and probably JC also.

We will draft that clown Clausen (another one of our many stupid azz draft choices at QB).

All you clowns will be on here saying the same thing about Clausen that you say about JC.

The only difference is, Clausen will be in the same system for a few years, actually have a decent OL and some skilled players around him. BUT MARK MY WORDS HE WILL SUCK.

The kid never won a damn thing at Notre Dame.

Posted by: sputnee | March 17, 2010 2:28 PM | Report abuse

I voted "hated it," to the Grossman signing but I may retract that. The more I think about it, the more I realize this gives them options. What if they fall in love with Bradford/Clausen. Draft him and trade JC for a 3rd. If he sux, cut him during training camp b/c there's no cap. Or, keep him as a #3 and we'll have JC, Bradford/Clausen, and Grossman and cut Colt. Or, if they don't get a shot at Bradford and they aren't sold with Clausen, draft Okung and keep Grossman as a back-up to help tutor JC with KShanny's offense. Grossman isn't going to be a world beater, but he gives us options and we're not stuck with ONLY one guy in mind for the draft. Options ... options ... options...

Posted by: C-DubDC | March 17, 2010 3:14 PM | Report abuse

Anyone that doesn't flat-out hate this has never seen Rex play. I have. Nearly every game. He is absolutely terrible. Period. Ask any Bears fan. Also, we already have Rex Grossman on our team - his name is "Colt Brennan."

I'm happy with the skins approach during this free agent time I think shanahan will build a very good team this year and alot of trades and changes will happen before and after draft day his methodical approach is great.
My only hatred is albert haynesworth complaining about anything for his money he needs to shut up and play any position they ask,100 million for an idiot. i hope we trade the 4th pick for 2 firsts or a bunch of picks would love to see campbell, cooley and a third for the rems first i'm sick of sir alberts attitude just trade him any possible way tampa bay tried to sign him as well overall i'm happy as a clam at high tide with the current state of affairs

well, all you gunslinger types are now happy. rex ranks lower than that gunsling crying qb who just got cut by charlotte. NEITHER of them contributed much and won only because both their teams had super lockdown defenses and decent running backs. if delhomme hadn't had a young steve smith to catch his overthrows (those not caught by defensive backs), he would've been demoted a long time ago. grossman stays injured, constantly fumbles and looks like he's scared to be out there when the team needs a play from his position. when you talk abt a "deer in headlights," HE be's the original man!
