Redskins are likely to make to make high-profile roster cuts

With an uncapped season in 2010, the Redskins are expected to cut many high-profile players with big contracts because, well, there are no cap ramifications. We decided to take a look at the most likely candidates to be released later today before the Redskins, minutes after midnight tonight, begin what many league observers believe will be an aggressive push in free agency under Coach Mike Shanahan.

Rock Cartwright: Age: 30; POS: RB/KR; 2009 base salary: $945,000; 2010 base salary: $1.5 million.

The overachieving Cartwright has stuck in the NFL for eight seasons (all with the Redskins) because of his heart. A team captain, Cartwright has been a special-teams standout, but his role last season was reduced on kickoff returns. Some members of the former coaching staff would have preferred to list Cartwright as inactive in most games.

Antwaan Randle El: Age: 30; POS: WR/PR; 2009 base salary: $1.5 million; 2010 base salary: $1.375 million.

It seems this move could not come fast enough for many Redskins fans. Although it wasn't all his fault, Randle El was among the league's least productive full-time punt returners last season. Demoted to the slot receiver position, Randle El failed to have at least one touchdown reception for the first time in his eight-year career.

Fred Smoot: Age: 30; POS: DB; 2009 base salary: $2.65 million; 2010 base salary: $3.9 million.

Smoot still talks a good game. As for his coverage skills, well, he wasn't as impressive on that front. The Redskins are expected to begin a makeover of their secondary, and Smoot just doesn't seem to fit with what could be a new-look bunch for 2010. And with Smoot due a base of almost $4 million - that's not going to happen here.

Randy Thomas: Age: 34; POS: G; 2009 base salary: $1.6 million; 2010 base salary: $3.7 million.

Thomas was a key to the Redskins' productive running game during Joe Gibbs' second stint. Once considered particularly agile for a 300-pounder, Thomas excelled at pulling on the team's bread-and-butter stretch plays. But Thomas has played in more than three games only once in the past three seasons because of major injuries.

Cornelius Griffin: Age 33; POS: DT; 2009 base salary: $1.334 million; 2010 base salary: $855,000.

Griffin was the Redskins' most talented interior lineman until Albert Haynesworth joined the team. He regularly drew the most double teams from opponents, which helped others make plays. Griffin would seem to be best suited to play nose tackle in the Redskins' new 3-4 scheme, but there could be a logjam at the position.

Andre Carter: Age: 30; POS: DE; 2009 base salary: $1.5 million; 2010 base salary: $1.3 million.

With 11 sacks, Carter is coming off his best season with the Redskins and the second best of his career. But the Redskins are switching to a 3-4 base front and Carter has said he was miserable as a linebacker in his one season in the role in San Francisco. And if the Redskins land a big-name free-agent pass rusher, Carter might be moving on.

wait, Rock is suddenly a high profile roster cut?? If the former coaching staff wanted him inactive most games, then they were just a hair more intelligent that I previously game them credit for.

The first 4, I completely agree with, however I'd keep Griff, and AC....

Agreed, I can't see one of these players as having a significant impact on the team next year except for Carter. He would have to play DE to make that impact too, probably not what Haslettahan are thinking.

All of this rumor-mongering aside, I have it on good authority that the Redskins intend to erect a 40 foot bronze statue of JC17 at the front gates of FEDEX Field -- in appreciation and recognition of his obviously superior talent and demonstrated ability to win the big games.

Andre Carter has played every game for four years.
He's clearly not headed for the HOF, but if you give him enough support he'll take advantage of mismatches and get some sacks.
Given our real problem areas, how can you chase away someone like that?

Posted by: daggar | March 4, 2010 11:00 AM | Report abuse

Why wasn't Portis on that list? No other coach in recent history has been better at getting more out of undervalued running backs than Shanny. If anyone can find a quality replacement for Portis its him. For a lot less money too. Maybe just wants to see what kind of effort he puts in over the next few months?

I'd like to see Redskin One gassed up at Dulles and ready to take flight tonight at midnight... with Antwaan Randle El on board.

Love everything about the guy except his play on the field, which is not on him so much as on the coaches who kept putting him out there.

Adios, Antwaan, and thanks for the couple of good things you must have done over your years in burgundy and gold, but which I can't remember because when I hear your name all I think of is a guy running backwards and/or toward the sideline on the rare occasion when he didn't fair catch a punt.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | March 4, 2010 11:04 AM | Report abuse

How is Ladell or CP not on that list. CP needs to go. He may have some in the tank but not here. He's worn out his welcome.

I think we all should agree on one thing. We're not going to win next year so why keep around a guy who's a needle in the side for our team and let him re-make himself some where else?

Those guys need to go. I want a new roster along with a new FO and coaching staff. I can stomach another 4-12 season with this staff, as long as I can see the blueprint they're implementing for the future.

I agree. You think they'd be able to get some value for these guys either in the form of draft picks or players. Send him to the Giants for the LB they drafted out of Virginia last year: Clint Sintim. He'd be great in the 3-4 and it would be fun to run over Carter instead of seeing him get run over...

Jeff Garcia for a year would be much better than reaching for Clausen or giving away multiple draft picks to get a somewhat better than average prospect in Bradford. Draft a QB next year. Zorn always got props for his qb coaching.
But you say "you're sure" he was forced on Holgrem. How are you so sure?

Posted by: mack1 | March 4, 2010 9:47 AM

Dude, he coached for the team where his name is on the Ring of Fame....And he wasn't that good.....He use to get sacked waaay more than JC17 has in multiple seasons.....But Seattle loves this guy....He's LArgent's best friend...

Like PPS8 said, he had the same position for 7 years...He's credited as a good QB coach, but all they can do is name HAssalback and no one else. And to me Hassalback doesn't count.

And the NFL is the most narrsaccistic (sp?) place of employment.

Don't believe me?

Who is our Head Coach?

Now, who is Offensive Coordinator?

Posted by: 4thFloor | March 4, 2010 9:55 AM

Your first paragraph lays out a bunch of "facts" that don't back up your original point. Your second paragraph disproves your first. (Except for the last line that contradicts everything that came before it.)

And your the third paragraph is a complete mystery to me. Do you mean nepotism? Even if you do, your point about our current coach hiring his (qualified) son has nothing to do with Zorn being forced on the staff in Seattle.

I can just imagine your outrage if the "media" printed crap like that.

And btw, I never liked Zorn.

I'm with daggar on Andre Carter -- solid contributor. If Haslett's new system can't accommodate a guy like that, I have to wonder about the implementation and operation of that new system... we've seen a bunch of dudes not given the best chance to succeed because this or that coach was stubbornly doctrinaire about "my way or the highway." Hate to see that kind of inflexibility continue.

Let me explain to many of you why CP is not (and will not) be on this list. The uncapped year has almost no effect on the likelihood of him being cut.

His ENTIRE $6 Million base salary for the 2010 season is GUARANTEED!!!

Now, to explain it to the guys that still don't get it: Dead money is usually what you here about when guys are cut. It affects the salary cap, but it is money that was ALREADY paid to the player. Portis has the near-unheard-of GUARANTEED base salary. That means that the Skins HAVE TO PAY him that much this season if he plays for them or not.

Simple business decision: do they pay him $6 mil to go play somewhere else or pay him $6 mil and maybe get something out of him this year?

my only issue with Rock is we need to upgrade the backup positions. He's asolid contributor. there still may be a spot for him on Spec Teams.

Griff is decent for the money. they need to find some of those $5M guys that aren't producing.

Griff is decent for the money. they need to find some of those $5M guys that aren't producing.

Simple business decision: do they pay him $6 mil to go play somewhere else or pay him $6 mil and maybe get something out of him this year?

Posted by: SportzWiz | March 4, 2010 11:15 AM

Makes sense. Thanks. Do we owe Portis anything beyond 2010 I wonder?

Cut all the chunky salaries (Randy Thomas has been hurt and sucked for years, Randel El? - go go go)and find as many offensive lineman as possible. Cut all of them, with Portis as the first. Keep JC, he's worth a look with a real line. Fine Haynesworth the value of his contract if he doesn't get off his fat _ _ _ and do something. He needs to lose at least 50 lbs and try something new, like running/elliptical. Don't sign any free agents who aren't considered "middle roaders" who are more valuable than their commanded salary. Bring some reason to the situation.

What would be acceptable to you?

Posted by: 4thFloor | March 4, 2010 10:37 AM

Maybe second round pick in THIS year's draft plus a developmental nose tackle or Hank Fraley. Third round pick for Jason Campbell ... the guy who is otherwise the TOP free agent is way too low (this stuff about Matt Moore is BS), esp. b/c there is no one ready to start Week One ...

Wiz - Sorry to disagree... he counts against the cap until 0000 hour Friday... then no cap... yes the money is guaranteed... but look at the Cowgirls idea of addition by subtraction... with T.O.

Portis is a cancer... throws anyone and everyone (his line, his coach and his QB) under the bus... his legs are shot by the 2200+ carries in the NFL... the legs don't come back... no reason to keep a 6 million dollar back that gets 3 ypc... and is tackled as much by running into the back of his blocker as by the defense...

CUT PORTIS and trade cry baby Mcintosh

Sorry guys, it seems that CP26 is guarenteed his obscene salary so cutting him only saves us a few 100 grand. He's here and will hopefully be exposed. All mentioned in this article are past their productive years, time for them with the the exception of Rock to retire and enjoy the millions they got from Snyder.

Posted by: sthai75 | March 4, 2010 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Good get rid of them all... Hey some of them have done some good things here but all are past the point were they are worth the money we pay them.. 4-12 and no cap ramifications. It's time to clean house.. Trade away Campbell and Rogers while your at it..

Posted by: sovine08 | March 4, 2010 11:59 AM | Report abuse

I thought Carter and Griffin played well. I'd rather resign them than have to rebuild our DL from scratch, especially with all the other rebuilding that we need (OL, DB, RB). The rest of these guys can catch the next bus out of town as far as I'm concerned.

While I think Rock is done, I'd bring him to at least one OTA before cutting him, Maybe the same with ARE, cause like it or not ARE is a leader in the locker room and unless you have a guy in mind to replace him, I'd hold onto him at least another year. (I think they do have a guy in mind so this may be moot)

I agree about smoot, the mouth of the south either needs to restructure and become a free safety or be gone.

I disagree on randy Thomas. Yes he's old and over paid, but until you find a Guard to take his places (BMW I believe is FA), I'd keep him as depth at least.

Griffin depends on the defensive sceheme, but his age has shown every year. As or carter he should be shopped for a mid round draft pick to a 4-3 team in need of a pass rusher.

"I would get rid of all of them."

Um, this is all you need to know:

4-12

Let me explain to many of you why CP is not (and will not) be on this list. The uncapped year has almost no effect on the likelihood of him being cut.

His ENTIRE $6 Million base salary for the 2010 season is GUARANTEED!!!

Now, to explain it to the guys that still don't get it: Dead money is usually what you here about when guys are cut. It affects the salary cap, but it is money that was ALREADY paid to the player. Yes - we do get it. It's not our $ so it's easy for us to get rid of him. Besides, that 'dead $' wouldn't be any different than this past year, would it? He's a prima-dona - the act just got old (especially since he hasn't been any good for a few seasons).

& your point that 'maybe' we could get something out of him could also be taken the other way that 'maybe', if he were here next season, he will infect/taint any new comers with his less than stellar work habits & his lack of running ability.

Is it me or does Reid write redundant articles based on him getting the information a day before and writes about it only to write about the same thing the next day when the skins announce it.

You forgot to mention JC.

Posted by: iboost | March 4, 2010 12:43 PM | Report abuse

THIS IS THE DAY SKINS FANS HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR. THE LIKE TO SAY THEY WANT THIS PLAYER OR THAT PLAYER GONE WELL, SOME OF US WILL GET OUR WISH.

I WOULD CUT THEM ALL EXCEPT ANDRE CARTER.

WHY CAN'T THEY ADD CLINTON PORTIS TO THAT LIST. OTHER TEAMS HAVE PARTED WITH 30 YEAR OLDS THAT ARE MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE THAN CLINTON AND WERE NOT A CANCER TO THE TEAM. WHY HOLD ON TO THIS GUY?

"You could fix every other one of the 52 roster spots and still couldn't hide the fact that JC17 is a loser.

Funny, he was a winner until he got here. We've also been losing since 1991.

Posted by: PAskinsfan17 | March 4, 2010 11:10 AM"

PERFECT...Except

1992 9-7, Wild Card [+1 Playoff Win]
1999 10-6, Division Winners [+1 Playoff win]

2000 8-8, with Norv Fired at 7-6
2001 8-8, with Tony Banks as QB...

2005 10-6, Wild Card [+1 Playoff Win]

2007 9-7, Wild Card

2008 8-8,

Okay so other than your gross exaggeration being COMPLETELY false...I think you're fine on that...even eliminating the 8-8 finishes, you're STILL off by FOUR winning seasons.

EACH of which resulted in a playoff appearance, and several of those in wins.

oopsie?

Now, on to your next ridiculous statement riddled with falshood and exaggeration.

Yes, and if I go play football with a stacked roster against inferior talent, I can look awesome too.

In fact, I'm sure JC would rock against, oh local high school teams, and maybe even a junior college squad or two.

Funny thing is the measure of real quality and worth is how you do against EQUAL OR BETTER skilled competition.

BTW, PAskinsfan, If being judged only on your past performance is how you get raises and promotions where you work, I want to work there too.

Here, where I work, we have to actually KEEP producing to stay employed, make money, and garner raises, promotions or other extra considerations.

What a concept.

See how an almost complete lack of fact in support of one statement undermines the credibility of your touting of JC17's alleged skills and value?

Peace.
