Redskins release Griffin

Updated at 5:15 p.m.

Add Cornelius Griffin to the growing list of players who received walking papers from the Redskins today. The defensive tackle is the sixth veteran known to have been cut today. It was not immediately clear if more players could still be on the chopping block.

Griffin, 33, joined the Redskins as a free agent from the Giants in 2004 and has been a regular starter here the past. He started 14 games last season, registering 34 tackles and two sacks.

Before the arrival of Albert Haynesworth in February 2009, Griffin, a 10-year veteran, was considered the most skilled of the team's interior linemen.

With his departure, the question mark surrounding the team's tackle position has only grown. The Redskins are expected to shift a 3-4 base and Griffin might have seemed like a good option at nose tackle.

Redskins coaches, though, clearly have other plans.

Wow that's a lot of salary sins of the past falling.

Who besides Portis has guaranteed money? I read there were six guys.

Griffin was playing on one leg most of he time he was here, I'm surprised he lasted this long.

One good thing about a regime change is that there are no favorites.

*cough*Blache*cough*

Good to see they are finally getting rid of the dead weight.

Hey Carlos, in case you missed it:

I'm in my joy watching this team get gutted. I am extremely happy. This is what we need to see. Thank you Bruce Allen & Mike Shanahan. Maybe some players will finally WAKE UP. Still need to get rid of the most cancerous leech...Clinton Portis....and thank you Mr. Snyder for finally hiring a GM.

Something that will be worth watching is how the older veterans on the FA market get treated. A lot of teams are cleaning house the way the Redskins are. Most of these guys are past their prime, but most of these guys are actually still useful players.

Griffin, Randle El, and Smoot may not have been worth the $5 million hit they've incurred on the salary cap the last few years, but they can certainly still help teams at a bargain price of, say, $900k (not likely most of them see a lot more than the vet min). Think Levi Jones last year, only not brought in at midseason.

The Skins figure to have depth problems with the release of these guys, but I'm betting a lot of those depth holes can be patched up in the short term with vet min contracts for older guys that are getting purged from outside rosters. I'm curious to see how many Shanahan and Allen look to pick up on short-term deals.

Posted by: TWISI | March 4, 2010 5:13 PM

Not yet, but the tenders aren't due till midnight.

Its doesn't mean that he and any of the guys cut today won't be back, just that they don't get paid at the tender amount or what their contracts said. I'm guessing the guys who got cut, however, won't want to come back.

I hope they re-sign Yoder.

Posted by: dcsween | March 4, 2010 5:22 PM | Report abuse

"Think Levi Jones last year, only not brought in at midseason."

Scratch that...a better example would be us resigning Philip Daniels last season at a minimal contract for one season. He wasn't worth the contract he had when we originally released him...but he was certainly useful last year at the bargain price he played for.

Posted by: psps23 | March 4, 2010 5:23 PM | Report abuse

Such a fresh feeling getting all these players out... love all these guys but thank god... especially getting rid of Randle El! No more seeing Randle El on punt returns!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 4, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with most of these guys except the money they were making was far too much for veteran backups. Because veteran backups is the stage they've reached in their careers.

Posted by: sovine08 | March 4, 2010 5:25 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wattsicon | March 4, 2010 5:19 PM

I thought he only had a two year contract that expired this year anyway.

Antrel Rolle release was for the same reasons as all the Skins releases ... performance projected did not equal payments due under contract.

I agree psps, tons of these guys will play. The formerly spare UFA market is going to continuing getting less sparse over the next few hours.

Hello

Posted by: chrislarry | March 4, 2010 5:31 PM | Report abuse

Thomas and Betts were easy calls. Smoot wasn't far behind.

Rock and ARE weren't that expensive and were on the field quite a bit. ARE was 2nd in receiving yards on the team. I'd have like to have kept him -- Kelly + Thomas may have more upside, but neither got even 400 yards last year and both have mixed histories. If nothing else, we saw what happened when those 2 got handed the job, then lost it to James Thrash. ARE would have pushed them harder. I also like ARE on reverses, Zorn made 1 horrid call, then foolishly abandoned it.

I'd have preferred to keep Rock, even if he stopped doing kick off returns. Every team still needs a guy or two who lives and breaths special teams. I'd have let Rock compete to keep his job.

Griffin is a talent who has been dinged up too much. If we go 3-4, we need 3 nose tackles. Albert and 2 other for the 4 games Albert misses. Thought Griff might have stayed for that. But he's been on the bubble due to injuries for several years. Thought he might have been let go in last years purge with Springs, Marcus and Taylor. Griff still has some games left in him, but its hard to count on him. I'm wondering why Daniels might stay while Griff goes.

So far, I'm not surprised, though a bit disappointed around ARE.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | March 4, 2010 5:33 PM

Zeke,

Jason Reid didn't report it, but I had read on Rotoworld that ARE was due a huge ($4 mill) roster bonus. It may not be reliable, but if there was any bonus more than Beantown bonus points, then ARE wasn't worth it.

Posted by: League-Source | March 4, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

releasing ARE is the best move the redskins have made in a long time. kudos!

Posted by: BMACattack | March 4, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

Redskins released WR Antwaan Randle El.

This one was a no-brainer. Randle El was due a $4.25M salary in addition to a $6.25M roster bonus. The Redskins are also looking to upgrade at the position, which left Randle El without a role. Though his playmaking days are in the past, the 30-year-old should draw interest on the open market as a quality slot receiver.

Yup.

No surprises here. Had all of these guys on my cut list except Smoot - but I didn't realize the salary escalation that happens this year. Not worth it. Would have given him a shot at FS, but no biggy.

Would like to see them sign Hunter Smith and Yoder, but will wait to see how that plays out.

Let Carlos go for a fountain soda and some french fries ...errr I mean a 4th or 5th.

This kind of purge must be happening all over the place, so lets hope Bruce Allen can sift through the rubble and find a few well priced gems that can fill in for a year or three while we catch up on the draft.

Wonder if Portis is following all this...

WIL. Can you believe it. He's an excellent player, but way too small for the NFL. He was used and abused last year, but he could play center in a pinch.

Posted by: glawrence007 | March 4, 2010 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Don't know about roster bonuses due. ARE renegotiated a year or two back, and usually guys lock up their money when they do. If ARE was due $4million, easy call, he's not worth that. Thought he was $1.5-ish.

If I have no part in those millions that these guys have already earned then I really do not care who gets cut. It is Danny's money anyway. Glad to see that the new regime has no loyalty to any of these money pits! Too bad Portis is still on the team, he must have "compromising" pictures on or with Danny.

What would be the trade value of a guy like Carter? He's gonna be 31 in May, but had a great year last year.

Pass rushing DE's are sort of a premium commodity, I wonder if could get a 3rd or 4th for him. I have trouble seeing him or Lorenzo Alexander working out as LB's with us....

Posted by: amaranthpa | March 4, 2010 6:10 PM | Report abuse

On ARE, if the salary numbers LS cited are accurate, you let him go. Easy call.

But let's not pretend he didn't do much as a WR.

ARE should never have been returning punts for us this past season, he should have been fully focused on being a WR. Blame that on Zorn. ARE was 2nd on the team in receiving yards and 3rd in total yards, way ahead of Kelly and Thomas.

fwiw, Rock was 5th in total yards -- not bad for a guy who was never expected to take an offensive snap.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | March 4, 2010 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Gotta think releasing ARE makes room for a guy like Kevin Walter who played (pretty well) for Shanny jr down in Houston last couple of years.

Posted by: edvar | March 4, 2010 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Chargers released Jamal Williams, who might be a good NT option for a year or two.

Posted by: dfbovey | March 4, 2010 6:12 PM | Report abuse

Fire Sale!!!! I hate to see some of these guys go, but in the back of your mind you have to think, it had to be done. That's one of the good things about a new staff, there are no ties and no loyalties. Except, for Portis, because of the link with Shanny in Denver, it may be the reason why he's still here. I still don't understand why didn't cut Rogers with a rusted blade. Dude should be at UPS.

Tired of him on PR and getting 7 yards on 3rd and 8. That guy was over priced and over hyped from the get go.

This is why BA was brought in along with Shanahan.

Someone made the very insightful point that the rich draft class will encourage teams to cut more 'name' players than usual this year. We've only got 5 picks, but look for cuts coming from teams with 8+ picks this year. Some talent will be available, maybe even at reasonable prices.

If by "noone" you mean "none of the big name, big money FAs" then that would be all too good in my book...part of changing the culture here is putting an end to bringing in these high-priced "savior" types. Get a few mid-level FAs that fit the system--and doing so for much less money--and build thru the draft.

Hopefully the joke is on the media this year. All the hype surrounding the Redskins and their FA spending in an uncapped year--boy would it be nice if we didn't do much after all...

Posted by: brownwood26 | March 4, 2010 6:51 PM | Report abuse

These are all good cuts.

It's sad b/c they are "good" guys, but they aren't players worth keeping/paying at this stage of their careers/contracts.

It's good to see business getting done this way. In the past, these kinds of guys might have been kept around for sentimental value and maybe even extended as the old regime continued it's delusion of thinking they were 2 players away from a Superbowl with this core intact.

If Monty doesn't get tendered it would reaaaalll interesting to see what happens in the draft. Forget Terrence Cody in the 2nd round - are we now in play for Suh/McCoy at #4??

If the skins get out bid by Chicago for Peppers then they probably weren't that interested in the first place. Chicago isn't know for throwing a lot of cash around.

Posted by: skinswest | March 4, 2010 6:45 PM

But Chicago has no first or second round pick, and Lovie and the GM are both fighting for their jobs this year.

Posted by: skinfanman | March 4, 2010 6:51 PM

True but ownership is the one that has to be willing to shell out the cash. The McCaskey's aren't known for that. Maybe this year is different but I think if the Skins want Peppers they'll get him.

Last year around this time, I was saying that real talent had left the building. Springs, Marcus, Taylor and Evans. Letting these guys go was the right move, but our defense didn't improve, despite adding Albert.

For those who are excited about this years cuts, once again, there is real talent leaving the building.

Can't really argue with any of the cuts based on age and price. But Griffin was effective, ARE was productive (as a WR, why he was on PR, I'll never know) and Rock was productive.

This is a team with lots of voids to address, seeing productive players leave creates new voids -- and that is always hit and miss. I recall ARE and Brandon Lloyd were brought in to fill a void at WR. Didn't really work out as mgmt had hoped. It often doesn't.

Who cares? No one wants to say the word but here it is: rebuilding. The attitude and culture needs to be changed around here. Unfortunately 3 of the main problems are stll here. At least Rodgers and Landry are still somewhat young and Portis knows the routine of the new regime. Me, I'd still get rid of 'em somehow but you can't cut everyone and I'm no GM so... Gotta disagree somewhat.

I believe that we can pretty easily replace all of the productivity/effectivity that all those guys provided last year.

Griff was little more than a rotational player at D-tackle. DThomas emerged as a better returner than Rock. Yes, Randle El was our 2nd best receiver but that's like calling some girl the second hottest chick at a fat band camp.

All these guys can be replaced. I think we can find cheaper younger guys of at least equal talent with more upside, and I believe we already have some on our roster.

I don't think dumping the more expensive vets from a 4-12 team can accurately be called getting rid of all the talent.

If it were me, I take this opportunity to get rid of Portis. No matter when he is let go, he's getting plenty of $$ to take with him. This year or next or even the year after.

My take is this. If Portis leaves and has a good year somewhere else, oh well, we made a mistake for 1 year -- a year we're not likely to go far anyway. That is the downside scenario.

Much more likely, we're getting rid of a guy who left in on the field and who doesn't have enough left to justify keeping him. On top of which, management gets to do something that is absolutely key.

Management can take the clear step and introduce accountability -- no one is above being held accountable.

Let Portis go. Its time.

One of the latest pieces of information comes from Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, who is hearing from a league source that the Philadelphia Eagles could be players in the Aaron Kampman(notes) sweepstakes.

“One league source told me that Kampman may be headed to Philadelphia,” said Jensen.

The move makes a ton of sense. The Eagles are in desperate need of a pass rushing defensive end that can complement Pro Bowler Trent Cole(notes).

Kampman—an eight-year veteran out of Iowa—recorded 3.5 sacks with the Green Bay Packers in 2009 before tearing his ACL midway through the year and being lost for the season. From 2006-2008, the defensive end racked up 37 sacks in 47 games with the Packers

Well there you have it.

And why not? They owe him a bunch of money anyways. If he can give us 700 yards in a backfield platoon and rediscover his nose for short-yardage/goal-line situations, I would consider it a success.

I just hope they really de-claw that cat and make sure he understands that the coaches will not hesitate to jam a boot up his rear end if he slacks off or runs his mouth.

Just read on PFT that Chucky Gruden worked out Tebow today and has worked out (or has plans to work out) several other top QBs in this year's draft. PFT speculated that this was b/c he has it in the back of his mind that he may return to coaching and face them one day, or that he is doing homework for MNF. But given his relationship with Allen, I was wondering whether he might be offering opinions to Allen and Shanahan about some of the top QBs in this year's draft.

p1 -- replacing talent is rarely as easy as it seems. Devin Thomas returned 20 kicks, with a slightly lower average than Rock, then got hurt doing it. Not that I hadn't cautioned against it, but Zorn is his own man.

As for Griff, yeah, he couldn't be counted on to stay healthy.

ARE was too expensive. Still, name all the WRs that have more yards as a Redskin than ARE over the last decade or so. Its probably a pretty short list. But I can sure come up with a lot of WRs that were supposed to be better ...

I think more DT gets chances and learns how to use his blockers at the pro level, we'll see that average go up. Again, it's about the upside. We've all seen DT's burst and power and there's alot of talent to be harnessed there. Rock was at his ceiling and it frankly wasn't very high.

I say the same thing about ARE. His career is clearly on the schnide, and while his numbers may have been 2nd best on the team, the Skins passing offense has been anemic over the past years. THere's no more talent/potential to be mined from ARE. We were 4-12 last season, why not make room for Kelly or mitchell to step up next year and take a stab at developing a fresh playmaker?

Posted by: p1funk | March 4, 2010 7:26 PM | Report abuse

If Portis were to play for the Redskins in the 2010 season but then be released after the season but before the end of the NFL "year" (which I believe would be in early March of 2011), would the salary cap hit for the balance of his signing bonus etc. be in 2010? If so, then there is no great urgency to cut him before next March, at least from a salary cap perspective, because the Skins would still take the cap hit caused by the release in an uncapped year.

Posted by: manlius1 | March 4, 2010 7:27 PM | Report abuse

They pretty much have NT covered with Anthony Montgomery and Golston plus Haynesworth.

They don't have either Offensive Tackle position covered. They have 1 starting guard and a center. They have 1 each swingman in Heyer.

I sure hope they are able to trade some of the "tendered" guys for picks because they definitely need the picks more than the talent at this point!

On a 4-12 team, are there any ringing endorsements? No matter what your record, you want to keep the best players. There is no reason to think that they could not have kept ARE, let the WRs compete and play the best. I am not a huge fan of ARE but 2nd best is 2nd best. In any scenario he is one of the 5 best on the team. Unless a guy is clearly at the end of his career (Grif, Thomas), you need a replacement plan if you are going to cut perfectly good (starting) talent. I feel confident that the FO does but until that plan is executed, we are basically replacing our 2nd best receiver with nothing. I do look forward to seeing what they do with a lot of these moves.

Q: Name the Skins WRs that had more yards than ARE since Gary Clark and Art Monk left.

As a WR, ARE had roughly 2500 yards (rush, receive, pass).

A: Gardner, Westbrook, Moss and Ellard. That's it. In 17 years!! And its not like mgmt hasn't tried to bring guys in.

And that is my caution ... ARE may not seem that special, but often times, a competent person gets replace with drek. Seen it before. Lots.

Bull sh!t. At almost 10 mil the dude sucked. There are 3 young receivers that are missing on playing time because Zorny wanted the vets in there. I'll say it again, the youngsters can't do much worse.

On a 4-12 team, are there any ringing endorsements?

Pro Bowl? Orakpo? London Fletcher?

I don't care who the Redskins release just so long as they keep JC17 and CP26. These two can fill the stadium up all be themselves -- and you can bet that we'll all plop down hundreds and thousands of dollars just to see the. They don't even need to play to wow anyone who sees them -- the best Redskins ever!!.

Isn't it amazing that people practically begged for Snyder to hire a GM and now look...

still complaining about cutting old backups on a 4-12 team!!!!

AMAZING!!!

It's absolutely ridiculous.

scampbell...

I couldn't agree more! ARE was taking snaps from Kelly. ARE likes to say that the young receivers haven't proven themselves. He hasn't proven himself either.

Thank's Griff. 6 years of playin' in the trenches, often through injuries. He was the heart and soul of a very good defense for the first 3 years that he was in DC.

alright so we've seen the guys that have been cut so far

anyone think they coulda cut some other players as well?

because the cuts made earlier today seem like they are all due to age/money...carter, sellers and moss come to my mind

Maybe. Maybe not. If you let them compete for the spots and let the best players play, that works out for everyone, no? Zorn is gone. The youngsters entering their 3rd year with some playing time under their belt should be able to beat out ARE if they are worth anything. Point is, you could (again try to) see what you have in the youngsters while keeping your proven #2 receiver (and only costing you $1.375 to do it).

ARE made it easy for the new regime to cut him cause of his atrocious punt returning. When you are nothing more than a slot WR, then you better be doing your job on special teams at a high level. He would probably be cut anyway cause his salary is too high for a slotWR/PR.

The last of the Jetskins just left the building! Remember that?

Yeah, those two are probably the closest thing to a ringing endorsement that the team has. That said, your record is what it is and those two contributed to it.

Aww yes, I am loving this. This transfusion of bloodletting to be replaced by new blood and younger blood was long needed.

No more of this year after year of penciling in the same old tired roster that never got it done.
