Redskins release Betts, Smoot

Ladell Betts is another running back who appears to have reached the end of the road in Washington. Though, because he finished last season on the injured reserve list, the two sides might have to reach an injury settlement before his release is official.

Like Rock Cartwright, Betts was a running back who didn't see many touches playing behind Clinton Portis, but who was a well-respected teammate in the locker room. Betts, a second-round Redskins draft pick in 2002, topped 1,000 yards in 2006 when Portis went down with a season-ending injury. He seemed poised for a similar showing in 2009
after Portis suffered a concussion, but Betts himself was placed on season-ending injured reserve list after tearing his ACL and MCL in Week 11.

Reserve cornerback Fred Smoot was also let go Thursday. Last season marked the first time in Smoot's career that he failed to notch an interception. The 30-year-old Smoot, an outspoken presence in the locker room, played mostly on nickel packages.

He's another player whose salary would have made a significant jump in 2010. Last season, he earned $2.65 million and he would've been owed $3.9 million in 2010.

Smoot began his career with the Redskins as a second-round draft pick in 2001. He posted his career-high in interceptions (five) during his rookie campaign. After going to Minnesota for two seasons, he returned to the Redskins in 2007 as a free agent but lost his job here when the team signed DeAngelo Hall midway through the 2008 season.

Not any of the cuts really are significant. If they were free agents, would you be clammoring to get them?

I have a feeling they're making cap space to make a run at peppers....which I'm not a huge fan of.....

"The only thing irrational is your post. Sproles makes a living on his speed. His speed will be gone around the time he turns 30. It happens to everyone. The problem with him is that his speed is all he has. That was the same thing wrong with Randle El. Moss is a decent wide reciever even without the speed. I don't know if you've realized this but Moss has lost a step and he's still productive. The reason is that he isn't soley dependent on his speed like Sproles and ARE are. He is also a good route runner, catches the ball, and gets off the line of scrimmage. He can also block and break a tackle. Randle El only ever had speed.

It's a moot point now as AJ Smith (one of the best in the business, by the way) realized the value of a 26-year-old RB who's skillset can only be matched by a baby's handful of players in this league, but that still doesn't diminish the utter incompetence of this post.

Randle El is not, was not, and has never been a speed player. Ever. He was an adequate slot receiver that relied on quickness, deception, and gadget plays to be effective in Pittsburgh's, and to a lesser extent, Washington's offense. He's a secondary possession receiver that moves the chains, and he always has been.

Sproles is a player whom offensive coordinators specifically design plays for in order to create mismatches in the open field with the intention of making "big plays". He's also a guy that defenses must scheme for when he's on the field, in the mold of Brian Westbrook in his rotational years with Deuce Staley, or Reggie Bush when he's not injured. Darren Sproles has zero resemblance to Randle El, other than neither of them are typical 'primary' players for their positions. In fact, Darren Sproles is almost the exact opposite player that Randle El was.

I don't know how you can possibly justify some of your arguments in your own head, but it's laughable that you can convince yourself that Darren Sproles is equivalent to Antwaan Randle El. I guess that's why one guy is getting tendered at over $8 million, while the other is being released at this very moment.

Cap space?

It must be a habit...

ah, psp, yeah, it cap. forgot...

No problem with these cuts, Betts has been unproductive for some time now. I always appreciated Smooty's competitiveness, not the biggest guy, but wasn't afraid to man up.

moss blocks, catches, amd breaks tackles? not last season

I hear Redskins One is already fueled and on the tarmac with a Friday itinerary for Phoenix. Sounds like Karlos Dansby will be the big FA pickup this season and will be a Redskin as of 12:01 AM on Saturday morning. Seriously hope that Redskins One isn't also making a pit stop in Charlotte to pick up Julius Pepper who would be the DE version of the overpaid Albert Haynesworth.

I can't believe anyone would make a case to keep Randy Thomas...this guys is physically unabale to perform.

I am gonna miss Fred Smoot. I may be in the minority on this, but I think Smoot was better than Carlos Rogers.

What they're freeing up is roster spots for the eight guys they sign while we're sleeping tonight.

Posted by: League-Source | March 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

LaVar is whining about these cuts coinciding with any FA pick ups that might occur tonight. Give me a break. These guys had their exit papers stamped a while ago. It's time to move on from this core group of players.

Posted by: TWISI | March 4, 2010 4:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't think the Redskins have made one move that LaVar hasn't been critical of.

Posted by: PortisPocketsStr8 | March 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

haha, greg, nice if you can't get us w/your pft post, you look for another angle...jerk.

Posted by: Curzon417 | March 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Gee....who is left? No depth at DB and only Portis at RB?

Posted by: Lisa_R | March 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Other names on the bubble:

Cornelius Griffin
Todd Collins

If the Redskins are in fact planning on switching to the 3-4 as a base alignment, I wouldn't be surprised to see the Redskins deal Andre Carter and make a run at Peppers. I know people don't want Peppers, but which package would you rather have?

(A) Andre Carter

(B) Julius Peppers + 4th/3rd round draft pick

Seems pretty enticing to me.

Posted by: psps23 | March 4, 2010 5:03 PM | Report abuse

It's going to be a crazy few days it seems.

I think Griffin was also released.

Posted by: dfbovey | March 4, 2010 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Griffin just released via 106.7

Posted by: jackstraaw | March 4, 2010 5:05 PM | Report abuse

San Diego released Michael Bennett as well. Any takers?

Posted by: Curzon417 | March 4, 2010 5:07 PM | Report abuse

I don't think any of this can be official yet. Technically, the league doesn't end till midnight. Its is quite possible that someone could slip some roofie into the drinks of Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith and they might agree to delay the death of a cap for a few days and then re-do the entire CBA.

Oh, who am I kidding? Any news about my Super Nintendo Free Safety?

Posted by: dcsween | March 4, 2010 5:08 PM | Report abuse

These are just the cuts of the guys under contract. What about the guys who are just regular UFAs? Any news about guys not being offered renewal? Seems like all we heard about was Rabach. What about Todd Yoder, the invisible touchdown machine?

Posted by: dcsween | March 4, 2010 5:10 PM | Report abuse

PFT just put a post that the Skins aren't inclined to make a push for Peppers.

Posted by: TWISI | March 4, 2010 5:10 PM | Report abuse

And why exactly would we tender montgomery? Did he show anything last year?

Posted by: Veretax | March 4, 2010 1:28 PM | Report abuse

To me he did. He proved he's too small for the NFL. It never was his play which was good when he wasn't getting pushed around.

All I can say is WOW.

The incoming regime of ShanaAllen means business. Good for them and good for the Skins!

I wouldn't mind peppers for reasonable amount but we all know that it has atleast a 50% chance of happening let me be clear I wouldn't sign peppers but as Someone said redskin 1 gased up and headed to Arizona I hope so but bring back rolle and dansby back to D.C.

Posted by: Superman321 | March 4, 2010 6:01 PM | Report abuse

dansby and rolle would be sweet

Posted by: goskinsgo1 | March 4, 2010 6:17 PM | Report abuse

Bittersweet because Betts was running well prior to injury. Rock was vocal like B-Mitch but didn't have his stats and the Danny doesn't like vocal unless you are siding with him.

Portis got a Deion sweetheart deal so he's not going anywhere unfortunately.

They'd better use that pick to rebuild or it's back to the 'free agent shuffle' that the Danny plays every off season.

make mine Peppers and Robinson

Posted by: coparker5 | March 4, 2010 6:25 PM | Report abuse

shanahan did NOT win many games his last 2-3yrs with denver, rabach should have been released this guy is horrible, weak, slow and prone to big penalties. If shanahan thinks he is going to get by drafting a qb with the 4th pick and having a small, weak, mainly white o-line(like the player he drafted in 2008 and bought him to wash. at 295lbs who gets his azz whupped at the line of scrimmage just like w. montgomery)look for the eagles, giants and cowboy's to continue beating this team twice a year.

Posted by: wathu19 | March 4, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

i'd be happy to bring him back at 2 years/3 million to be the nickel, he plays with his heart on his sleeve, and he's got good football instincts, smooooooot i'm gonna miss you if we don't bring you back

Posted by: destewar | March 4, 2010 7:39 PM | Report abuse

Betts was the best back on the roster.
