Report: Larry Foote on verge of deal with Steelers

The Redskins can scratch Larry Foote off their list of free agent targets. Foote, an inside linebacker who spent last season in Detroit, is apparently on the verge of signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Foote was en route to Pittsburgh on Sunday and could be agreeing to a three-year deal, according to a report in the Detroit News.

"I am excited to return," Foote told the News. "They called. I am going there right now and try to get something done."

Foote, who began his career with the Steelers, visited both the Redskins and the Arizona Cardinals last week. According to the report, Foote said there was a chance he still signed with Arizona, but there was no mention of Washington.

The Redskins were seeking a linebacker who could line up next to London Fletcher when the team switches to defense that relies more heavily on a 3-4 formation.

Certainly not surprised. However, I don't think he'll start in Pittsburgh yet would definitely have a real chance of starting at Washington and Arizona. Weird way to go about free agency for him. Maybe the skins will be lucky that he goes somewhere else.

There will be plenty of good tackles available in the 2nd round.

There's this one in the draft named Rolando McClain.

If 'Skins go defense, let's get him.

For some reason Darelle Revis and Patrick Willis did not have top 5 grades coming outta college, but they were clearly the best defensive players in their draft.

Every team that selected a defensive player b4 those two were jipped!

Seattle made that mistake last year with Aaron Curry; there were 3 better choices at LB, yet they passed on them b/c they didn't have top 5 talent?

I can't wait to use hindsight to my advantage with McClain. I bet if everyone knew what Ray Lewis would become, he'd been selected top 3 in his draft!

Just because Mike Mayock and Mel Kiper don't feel like McClain is top 5 talent, doesn't make it so. Kid is gonna be a beast!

Report: Larry Foote on verge of deal with Steelers

Who cares. Michigan should be investigated for letting this moron in.

Rocky is younger, bigger, and is already on the roster. He's just going to have to adapt to playing inside.

Posted by: Diesel44 | March 14, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

3-4? I think that's the range of Foote's Wonderlic score.

First the was all-in for the Cards: "I'm begging. I want to get back to a winner."

Now he's all-in for the Steelers. "They called. I am going there right now and try to get something done."

Time to be all-in is after you signed the contract, not when you're going for a job interview.

Larry Foote has his championship ring...he's just trying to better his retirement fund.

If Vinny C were still our GM, Foote would be a Redskin right now, while earning dividends on his 8 million dollar signing bonus we'd ah given him.

I don't really care about his weight and so long as Mike Shanahan will not allow the veterans to sleep at their own house, Fat Albert should be in good condition.

Here's how I see the top 32 going. I debated Charles Brown instead of Gresham, but I Think Brown's size will keep him out of the first. Anyways, if the Skins went OL,OL they really could get their two young bookend tackles in the same draft.

2 Qb (Bradford, Clausen)
2 Rb (Spiller,Matthews)
1 Wr (Bryant)
5 OT (Okung,Buluga,Williams,Davis,Campbell)
1 G (Iupati)
1 C (Pouncey)
1 TE (Gresham)
5 DT (Suh,McCoy,Wiliams,Price,Ordick)
4 DE (Morgan,Pierre-Paul,Dunlap,Griffin)
4 LB (McClain,Kindle,Graham,Weatherspoon)
3 CB (Haden,Wilson,McCourty)
3 S (Berry,Thomas,Mays)

Depending on what KC does in the 1st, Brown won't make it past them either. I like Saffold a bunch as well. He's played well at LT. There's also Ducasse and Veldheer, but they are certainly more of a project.

We have...
Campbell
Brennan
Bartel

Neither of the guys listed under Campbell are NFL caliber. We need a #2, not a fan of Simms but he would be an upgrade over both B & B. I wouldn't be surprised if we signed Grossman.

That's what the initial reports said. However, Saffold held his own playing LT at the Senior Bowl, and the combine he showed enough athleticism to play LT. I think he'll get a look at LT from teams before moving him to the right.

My gut tells me if we draft OT at either #4 or 37, we'll want him to start the season. Did Saffold show enough in Senior Bowl to be a starter?

Posted by: frediefritz | March 14, 2010 11:42 PM | Report abuse

Saffold and Brown should be available early 2nd round, as should the best tackle in the whole draft Tony Washington

Skins could easily get QB Clausen 1st round, OT Washington/Saffold 2nd round, OT Jason Fox 4th round, and some combination of WR/DB/LB/RB with the rest of the draft.

I guess that depends on where we decide to hold camp this year. Actually, I don't think it is bad idea. It was a joke at first, but upon further review, it might work.
I work for a RR contracting company and we had a job in Indiana, alot of the guys had campers and stayed in campgrounds during the job.
It would be chump change for these guys (and the team) compaired to year after year hotel bills.
If I were the player, I'd rather have an RV setup with satellite tv, kitchen, etc. than stay in a hotel.

"Rocky is younger, bigger, and is already on the roster. He's just going to have to adapt to playing inside."

Rock will be fine, but the thing is, we still need another 'backer with starting ability.

Yes, I know about the plans to morph Lo Alexander into a linebacker, but that makes about as much sense as a chicken driving a truck.

(INSERT image of a rooster the wheel of a Tacoma pickup checking his Garmin for directionS to the closest KFC.)

Foote was a fine match, and for me, the one player the FO could've shown a enough money to make apart of the team.

But if he's gone, the team is now in the market for a solid vet linebacker or must draft one.

Or else the idea to play 3-4 will be one that lays an egg.

Posted by: MistaMoe | March 15, 2010 8:07 AM | Report abuse

If we're changing to the 3-4, we should steal a page out of the Steelers' book: you can never have too many good linebackers. You have to love those linebackers. Hopefully, this year will be the start of the "save the whales" campaign on the offensive line and the "embrace the linebackers" on the defensive side of the ball.

This is totally true.

And of our present linebacking group:

London Fletcher

Brian Orakpo

Chris Wilson

Rocky McIntosh

Darrl Young

Curtis Gatewood

HB Blades

Alvin Bowen

Robert Henson

Lo Alexander

Gatewood, Henson, Bowen, Wilson, and Blades are all relative unknowns.

And Andra Davis or Keith Bullock picked up on the cheap would satisy this blogga.

Absolutely not, quinn3. Shanny has a track record of selecting rb's in later rounds, then having them produce 1000 yd seasons. And there will be several really good rb's available later in the draft. I'm hoping we use our 4th round pick on Ben Tate, Auburn, or James Stark, Buffalo. Both have good speed, weigh about 220. And there are several rb's that go undrafted that we could sign.

lets hope not, if hardesty is availabe in the 4th round or blount in the 5th or later, i don't see how shannahan and allen can pass up that type of talent

LJ is only guaranteed 3.5 mill over three years, therefore he can easily be cut before the three years without a major hit if we find our RB of the future in this years draft

I'd like to see Best here too but keep in mind that we do still have Alridge. With a real blocking scheme and coaches that aren't afraid of unproven players we may end up with something special. I think we'll try to get a Portis replacement first and maybe get a small burner next year. I'd look for us to take a guy like Hardesty and actually give Alridge a shot this year.

Foote is either posturing to try and get a bigger deal from Arizona/Washington, or he's not very bright.

Why else would he be so eager to return to a team that cut him a year ago to serve in a backup role, when other teams wanted him as a starter?

I can't understand why they signed him to a three year deal unless none of it is guaranteed. I also suspect that it will not be Porti-John tandem backfield ... and that Portis won't be on the roster for Week One (notwithstanding his guaranteed money). "I bet you'll find the lockerroom cancer stuff disapates quickly, though I wouldn't expect super high production at RB this year from anyone."

Agreed.

Shanny is a big time coach whose dominating presence alone will shut up any guy with a beef--that's what separates him from the likes of Zornos, Turners, and the Kotites of the world.

Plus, Johnson just wants to play football, and the skins offer him one last ride on the league carousel.

I don't think he'll be a locker room cancer, either.

But I do think Q Ganther might outperform him as he hits the hole quicker than Johnson, and is a shifty, quick-cut type.

not sure how I feel about the LJ signing, I have the confidence in Shanny to shove his foot up LJ's backside, but I'm wary of his impact in the locker room...
Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | March 15, 2010 9:06 AM

I don’t think you need to worry about his impact in the locker room.

As long as they don’t let in any women or gays for him to knock around or insult.

yes, keep Ganther!

Porti-John backfield... lmSJKao!

Posted by: DikShuttle | March 15, 2010 9:45 AM | Report abuse

I do think that LJ can make hay catching the ball out of the backfield....heck, who knows, this could be the EXACT kick in the teeth that CP needs....

So in the past week we have been trolled by cards fans and now a saints fan? WTF???? Look what happens when perennial losers see a little bit of success.

Anyway, this quote from a prior thread;
”The offensive linemen currently under contract for 2010 include: Montgomery, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Mike Williams, Stephon Heyer, Artis Hicks, Paul Fanaika, Kory Lichtensteiger, Clint Oldenburg, Edwin Williams and Will Robinson.”

makes me think that they HAVE to go with drafting linemen in the first and hopefully second rds…..
Hopefully LJ can keep the diapers off and work better in tandem with CP than Betts did…at least it gives us some depth, and will hopefully, like they have been saying, push Portis to work harder.

Posted by: dlhaze1 | March 15, 2010 9:49 AM | Report abuse

We can draft a LB or find an un-drated FA LB. Its been done before...
LFletcher was drafted in the lower rounds..6th or 7th so it is possible to find our own LB....or maybe they passed on Foote because this switch to the 3-4 is just BS

Posted by: jcnjcnj | March 15, 2010 9:51 AM | Report abuse

how many games did quinn start for Cleveland?? seems like they didn't really give him a shot to succeed...

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | March 15, 2010 9:38 AM | Report abuse

Not that many. He had a escalator in his contract if he played 70% of offensive snaps.

Think it was in the range of 5-10 mil more. That's why Anderson was starter most games even though he had games where he through for under 50 yds.

2-14? Wow.

I'm not expecting a lot of success next season either, but I was thinking 6-10 or 7-9.

I guess if you're going to prognosticate you gotta go big.

dl, I wouldn't exactly call how JZ used these 2 guys as a tandem...

Dlhaze,
Yea man, I saw that same post saturday or whenever it was posted and I feel the same way. It really makes you feel that this team cannot go anything but LT with #4. The thought of drafting a young qb and then putting him behind a line of, i have no idea who would be the LT, Dockery, Rabach, I guess Hicks, and Heyer... seems like an awful idea for the longevity/ life of the new kid and would probably mean the end to hte life of Clinton and LJ as well. (Not that I'd be too upset if Clinton was no longer on the team...)

Posted by: peoplearestupid1 | March 15, 2010 10:03 AM | Report abuse

Clinton Portis can still get cut...

...It's all about the offseason for him. HE has to be an example. But if Shanny deems him to not be a leader on this team, he'll cut him so he won't be a bad influence with in the locker room.

And we can still get CJ Spiller @ #4 and a LT @ #37.....

Kiper AND Lombardi are now projecting Clausen to the Skins @ #4....I think they are both doint us favors (Lombardi for Bruce Allen and Kiper for Cerrato), so that we can find trade partners.

Shanny knows who he wants. He has been at HOME all year long watching tapes. We just don't where that person will come from right now.....But it AIN'T Clausen...

"Hopefully LJ can keep the diapers off and work better in tandem with CP than Betts did….."

Actually, Betts was never really used in tandem with Portis as that style of running attack was never considered during his tenure as a redskin.

Betts took all the practice reps, and Portis gets the attention and money.

I don't think Johnson will impress in the way that Betts occasionally did.

Ganther might be the back who stands out as he fits the mold of 'unheralded' running back who makes hay in Shanny's system.

Posted by: MistaMoe | March 15, 2010 10:06 AM | Report abuse

4th, I don’t know if you can count on getting a STARTING LT at #37, which is what they need unless they make some surprise move between now and the draft. I just pray that it won’t be Clausen…I could live with Bradford if I had to, but I just have to think that they need to go with a OL…..

Okay, maybe “in tandem” is the wrong choice of words. I wouldn’t mind seeing LJ and CP in the backfield at the same time once in a while. I don’t want to just see LJ come in as a “3rd down” back. The biggest thing is that he should be pushing CP…..

Depending on how many RBs they keep, I don't think Ganther makes the final roster.

Do yourself a favor a catch the NFL Network replay of the ravens v. chiefs game.

It takes Johnson a day and a half to hit a hole.

There were multiple instances where there was blocking, but because he doesn't have any kind of 'burst' or cutting ability, he was constantly hit just as he hit the line of scrimmage.

Johnson is done, folks.

Tiger Woods to be on this week's South Park.

Book it.

Posted by: dlhaze1 | March 15, 2010 10:19 AM | Report abuse

We all know Shanny is going to draft some obscure RB in like the 4th or 5th round, he'll end up supplanting Portis and being the #1 rb by like week 7 or something. Thats just what he does and to be honest, we all know it'll be for the best of the team. Portis is done and is a cancer in the locker room... the only place he is welcome is in Danny Boy's office and hopefully Brucy and Shanny have explained to Danny Boy that he cannot run his team like that.

Moving back to #4... again it is the only real logical choice for this team to take a LT. However, I still am not going to believe that we will do the logical thing until I see it. Years of retarded moves and poor draft decisions make me think we are incapable of making the right choice... and Shanny or not the scouts are still the same guys who were here with Zorn and Gibbs for that matter... so again I'm not too excited for this draft, and especially this pick...

According to MAyock, their are 7 A+ LTs in the draft and 5 really good ones after that.MAyock and Lombardi think one of those top teir guys would still be sitting there @ #37.

So why waste such a high pick on such a low value?? (Because we would only get the 2nd best LT available @ #4. Okung to the Lions)

Isn't any RB on a bad team who faces the Ravens D at their home for the opener gonna look bad??

Wait until they show you the NFLN Replay of week 15 when he was with Cincy and he was getting a Buck Fiddy on the Ground.......

I didn't see that game, but the Raven's D made plenty of RBs look bad.

Ganther was an emergency solution, brought in because he was familiar with the former RB coach. If he happens to make the roster he won't see PT.

Bye Bye Larry Foote. Sorry we never knew you. Not that we really need you.

Anyhow, I'm fine going into the season with a 3-4 LB corps of Orakpo, Fletch, Rocky, Carter. Let's see how it works, eh? That's what this year is for anyways...seeing how it works. We can rotate in HB Blades, LoAlex, Wilson...another I guy I'm interested in seeing is Curtis gatewood.

Let's assess the LB corps this year and then next year we can see what we need to do to bolster it after we've fixed our Oline this year.

I am surprised that the Steelers dipped back into the FA market for a guy that is likely going to be a depth player for them in 2010.

At 30 Foote is evidently deciding it is better to be on a winning team now than be a starter on a team with more question marks.

I think if he were younger he would not have made this choice.
