Willie Parker will visit Ashburn

UPDATED 6:10 p.m.
We now know that at least five of the tailbacks who finished last season as members of the Redskins -- Rock Cartwright, Ladell Betts, Quinton Ganther, Marcus Mason and Eddie Williams -- will be continuing their careers somewhere else. The Redskins need to reload their backfield and one of the top candidates appears to be Pittsburgh's Willie Parker.

Parker will visit Redskins Park next week, according to a league source. The visit was first reported by KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old Parker is an unrestricted free agent this year. He appeared in 14 games last season for the Steelers -- starting only three -- and finished the season with 389 yards on 98 carries. Parker started Pittsburgh's first three games last year, missed a
couple of games due to injury and when he was healthy enough to
return, he'd lost his starting job to Rashard Mendenhall.

Parker, a two-time Pro Bowler who's known for his speed, is not far removed from years in which he was one of the AFC's more productive backs. Last season, in fact, was his worst statistically since his rookie campaign. Parker topped 1,000 yards from 2005-07 and still had 791 yards in 2008, a season in which he missed five games due to injury.

Parker is known for a strong work ethic, and the possible tandem of Clinton Portis and Parker in the backfield would be a significant upgrade over what the Redskins fielded in last season.

In other free agency news, a league source confirmed the Redskins have had discussions with nose tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu, who was released by the Carolina Panthers last week. Kemoeatu missed all of last season and is still recovering from a torn Achilles. No visit to Redskins Park is currently scheduled, and no progress might be made until Kemoeatu is healthier. It's believed the Saints might also have interest in Kemoeatu.

At 29, Willie better be cheap, regardless of his apparent health.

"If you're wondering why the Washington Redskins weren't able to land Packers left tackle Chad Clifton in free agency, check out this explanation from NFC North blogger Kevin Seifert. It looks like the Redskins were prepared to outbid the Packers, but Clifton may have given Green Bay a hometown discount.

So who will play left tackle for the Skins in 2010? Well, you better study up on Oklahoma State's Russell Okung."

HELL NO, nto after the way he disrespected the Redskins and us fans after the Steelers-Skins game in 2008. Don't want him anywhere near DC.

Ma'ake Kemoeatu would be a decent pick up if healthy. Not sure how much explosion will be lostdue to his injury. I think I'd go after Jamal Williams as well.

You could probably grab Charles Brown or Roger Saffold (sp) in the 2nd. Also, it seems that Artis Hicks, who is to be courted by the Skins, has played LT before.

Great athlete... lots of red flags with his history though.

Could be a real steal in the 4th, though.

ya i think so too skinsfaninkaneohe...who knows if he will slip past the third round though

i dont remember where i saw this, but a reporter was commenting on the fact the skins were actually intrigued by blount and liked the fire and energy he played with at oregon, they were only concerned with his background

if he is still available in the fourth round though, i can't see how shannahan and allen pass up blount

I'd do it. Kyle Shanahan uses Slaton to help create matchups by motioning him out of the backfield and making the defense define coverag if a LB or safety goes with him.

Posted by: TWISI | March 6, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Blount could be good. Plus, if the moment is right, he might just stomp on somebody's head like Big Al.The entertainment potential alone might be worth a 4th rd pick.

But the consensus seems to be that picking a RB in the 4th is a solid move. And I'm also done with that approach. Shanny knows how to pick middle round RBs and if we stock up on o line with rounds 1 and 2, we're suddenly looking half decent.

Posted by: pgugino | March 6, 2010 2:52 PM | Report abuse

I think the Redskins should target a RB in the 2nd or 4th. Blount is intriguing. MAYBE he figured it out after getting booted for the year, but then becoming a model citizen to earn an unpromised second chance.

Is Toby Gerheart a reach at 37? Not sure Best will be there.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | March 6, 2010 2:54 PM | Report abuse

Anybody else seeing the tendency toward Pittsburgh players? With Spanos and Haslett, it looks as if they're using their track records to glean some talent away. First Foote and now Parker. I'm all for it.

I think Gerheart is a slid 3rd round selection. #37 is too high for him IMO.

Hardesty is the back I'd like to see them get. He really had a good season this past year. He backed the game tape up with his performance at the combine. He's a bigger RB, one cut runner, has good vision(from what I've read), and has enough speed to take it to the house. I hope he's there in the 4th,but I have a feeling he'll be off the board in round 3.

Slaton got benched last year. All kinds of fumbling problems. FA or draft for RB. I'd love to get rid of Carlos too but we still kinda need him at a thin corner position.

Also,it looks like the Skins are raiding the 49ers' Oline. Shanhan better be careful Singletary doesn't flash back to his playing days.

Man!!! This is new to me, here it is day 2 of free agency and no news of a signing by the Redskins. I 2 wanted change but this beyond change maybe Monday will be the day, Pashos, Foote, Fast Willie Parker and Ma'ake Kemoeatu could be signed next week. Also hope we can get RG Montrae Holland or G Artis Hicks (former Eagle), Pashos and either of those guys would be a solid run blocking right side. Thoughts on this, Jared Gaither from the Ravens how about trading a 2011 2nd or 3rd round pick for him or a 2nd round pick this year and a 4th round next year?? Charlie Johnson of the Colts is also a RFA with a 1st rd tender wouldn't mind trading a pick for him, he kinda fits that Shannahan mold for a LT. With both those guys we know what we are getting and Gaither is 23 yrs old, hell our 4th overall pick to the Ravens for Gaither and their 1st round pick wouldn't be such a bad trade. Not sure what number they pick at but least we could get a starting LT from day 1 and save a boatload of money by getting out of the top 5. With their pick we could either go OT and take a RT like Anthony Davis or Trent Williams, or we could NT with Cam Thomas. Maybe take Clausen since alot of people have him with a 2nd round grade. Just something to think I doubt if Ozzie would take a trade like that but I can always dream!!!

Maybe, but head coaches that focus on one or two units' strength rather than across-the-board balance/competence (first) don't last long, plus they need that expensive QB to keep breathing.

At this point, I want Okung or Bradford (if the shoulder checks out) at # 4, but I could certainly live with getting one of the DT's (or using them or Berry to trade down for more picks).

Posted by: Oogalaboogala | March 6, 2010 3:47 PM | Report abuse

Blount got baited by a Boise State player and reacted without thinking. Following his suspension he stayed with the team and worked hard, which led Coach Kelly to reinstate him.
He is a load to bring down and has good speed for a man his size. If he was drafted by the Skins, it would be good to pair him with a mentor who would see to his personal growth.
There's little question about his talent. He's not a breakaway back, but he's a sledge hammer between the tackles and he's got enough speed to get outside. Think Eddie George.

A little bit of clarity for a previous comment related to the CFL kicker, Medlock.

He tied the CFL FG record going 7/7.
Hitting from 15, 46, 51, 51, 32, 52 and 17 yards. The game was indoors, at BC Place.
His stats are just ok, especially when you consider that his CFL team plays in a dome and most of his missed attempts were on the road outdoors!

He is an average kicker by NFL standards and I hope when the Redskins finish with him, he returns to the Argos.

I wish him well, but I hope the Skins find a better kicker than Gano & Medlock.

Fast Willie can beat you between the tackles and he can beat you outside, but he's not the sort of "run straight ahead only" RB that Shanahan demands.

I predict that this meeting will come to naught.

Any one else find it interesting that blount got suspended for basically the whole season costing him millions of dollars for throwing that punch. (personally don't think to bad of him cause i'm sure that white guy called him a N!&&@) While griner the female basketball star only gets two games for punching someone making a hard play.

Unless he comes relatively cheaply AND short term, Willie Parker is a bad idea. Signing a 29 yr. old NFL running back with high miles is kinda like buying a used Corvette that was driven by a teenager: Buyer beware!

Slaton sucks. He is too small and does not run between the tackles well and lacks field vision for the one cut zone blocking scheme we are going to be running. His only upside is in the passing game as he runs smooth routes and has nice hands. Keep in mind he lost his job last season to Ryan moats and Chris Brown.

Any backfield with Tortis will be no improvement. He's done. The only thing he seems to be able to find is the sideline, the ground or the back of his blocker. Picking up another 29 year old is dubious at best. We need young fresh legs in the backfield, and I thought Ganther played well enough to at least be given a chance to compete for the job.

Posted by: TRACIETHEDOLPHIN | March 7, 2010 11:22 AM | Report abuse

Rather than bringing in Willie Parker, it makes a lot MORE SENSE to bring in Thomas Jones. He's by far, hands down, the BEST RB FA out there.

Posted by: alwaysactingafool | March 7, 2010 11:39 PM | Report abuse

Can't say that I see any upside to replacing Betts or Cartwright or anyone else with Parker. Shanahan has a proven track record of drafting later round backs. If Parker is league vets minimum with a few incentives, OK. otherwise, why do we need to replace aging, unproductive backs with an aging, declining back?
