Rex Grossman might be a backup QB for Redskins

Are the Redskins searching the free agency market for a quarterback?

According to a report on ProFootballTalk.com, the Redskins might have some interest in Rex Grossman.

We're still seeking out confirmation to gauge the seriousness of the report, but it certainly wouldn't be completely surprising.

Grossman worked under offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Matt Lafleur last season in Houston, so the new coaching staff is familiar with Grossman and we hear they enjoyed working with him.

But to be clear, Grossman is not a guy who'd be brought in to start in Washington. He'd be a reliable backup, which the Redskins happen to be in the market for right now. With Thursday's release of veteran Todd Collins, the Redskins have two quarterbacks on their roster besides Campbell: Colt Brennan and Richard Bartel. Time will tell, but it's
not clear how either would fit into the Redskins' long-term plans.

Grossman, 29, threw just nine passes last season for the Texans, completing three - one was an interception. His last start came in 2008 with Chicago, but he hasn't regularly held down a starting quarterback job since 2007.

First to say I hope that picking up Grossman doesnt foreshadow a qb in the 1st round.

JC is available for a 1st rounder. A starting QB in the NFL is certainly worth a 1st round pick.. so, why dont those teams, you reference, make a move?
Because JC is not a legit NFL starter..He doesnt have the essentials to motivate and lead a team.
He could be a game managing back-up but, why give up a 1st for that?

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | March 5, 2010 1:40 PM

Dude, JC will be starting again this year in the NFL. Book it. He got the same tender as Kyle Orton, whom you argued was far superior to JC because the Broncos coach preferred Orton during the Cutler fiasco... and 2,438 NFL GMs refused to give up a 3rd rounder for JC yadda yadda yadda.

Posted by: Alan4 | March 5, 2010 1:57 PM
====================================
If JC is so good.. why didnt Shanahan extend his Contract after watching every play from 2009 (as he said he did)?
The HC has spoken.. JC is not an NFL QB that will take you to the playoffs.. If so, Shanahan would of signed him.

All you JC lovahs can follow him to his new team, as a backup. The signal has been sent that he is not wanted in Ashburn. Actually Snyder, with his Sanchez crush, sent that message last year.

With Rex Grossman possibly headed to DC in a backup QB role, could this open the door for Steve Spurrier coming back to the NFL? Our sources tell us that Spurrier and Kyle Shanahan have a unique friendship from when Rex was with the Texans. Spurrier is said to be regretful that his first experience went poorly, and is anxious to get back into the NFL.

So.... how do ya'll feel about JC at QB?

SkinsneedaGM, Vic1, P1funk, hock.... ,

1. What do you think would resolve the QB position? (corrollary: do other players have any role?)

2. Why do you think the Skins missed the playoffs so often even BEFORE JC took over the QB position?

3. Do you believe JC is better than ANY of the dozen or so QBs who started between Mark Rypien and JC? How about Friesz? Schuler? Frerotte? Green? George? Banks? Matthews? Wuerffel? Ramsey? Hasselbeck?

4. Is you answer to #1 any different than what's already been tried during the QB carousel that brought us 1st round draft picks like Schuler and Ramsey, or "stars" like Jeff George?

They had no choice. You know how you put yourself in position to be offseason champs? By trading away you draft picks.

More power to 'em. But the media is going to hype it and gas it 'til no end, but had that been the 'Skins they would be getting their jokes in.

Meet the Washington RedTexaBroncskins. They will be bringing in players that are familiar with the system. Grossman isn't that bad. He isn't a long term solution but he knows the system. He can throw a hail mary out of bounds just as well as Campbell - maybe even better.

Veteran still wants starting opportunity Brad Biggs

The Washington Redskins are already bringing a pair of veteran tackles in for a look in Chad Clifton and Tony Pashos and now they’re trying to reel in a veteran center, one of the most decorated in the league, Kevin Mawae.

According to a report by Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean, Mawae is in talks with the Redskins and Denver Broncos. The Tennessee Titans would like the 16-year veteran to return as a backup, but Mawae is seeking a starting job.

The Broncos cut their center Casey Weigmann while the Redskins re-signed their center Casey Rabach late last night to a $12.3 million, three-year contract. It’s not known if Rabach or Mawae would be looked at to play guard. The Redskins have multiple holes on their line. Stay tuned.

Yes, Rex did lead his team to a super bowl... with Devin Hester returning every kick to the house, or at least it seemed like he did, and their Defense stiffiling opposing qbs. REx's stats were nothing special and I want to point out that Kyle Orton went on to beat him out as rookie and do just about as well with the same team... thus any credit you can give Rexy... is kinda lost.

He has proven that he is a backup, as is campbell probably... but because the skins have tendered campbell witha 1st round tender does not, in anyway shape or form, mean that we have made our decision on him and that he will not be back next season. It actually means that we will keep him... unless someone OVERPAYS for him... say give us a 1st round pick. Otherwise, hes not going anywhere

I got an idea. How about remembering that this is a game, i.e., ENTERTAINMENT, and stop acting like fretful grandmothers any and every time someone mentions the possibility (gasp!) that Jason Campbell might not be the starting QB for the Washington Redskins this season.

Life will go on, and the team can't do much worse than 4-12, so relax already.

A couple of comments:

1. From ESPN: "Bears agree to deal with Manumaleuna". The Skins need to sign a Samoan dude. They haven't had one since Joe Sal left.

2. The Skins shouldn't be hot to trot with Dan. He a Ottaburn grad. We all know how Rog and Camp, fellow alums, turned out.

Somewhere around the time Mike Shanahan was hired, there was a piece written about his philosophy of picking players by looking at hightlights of them and figuring that was their potential and that he could 'coach em up' to that level. I immediately thought of Spurrier when I read that. As much as I liked the ole ball coach's quotes, if Florio means that the door for SS opens in DC, I'm heading to the Depot for some deadbolts...

...Look for JC17 to get traded to Buffalo or the Rams for picks/players...

....Than look for us to either shoot up to the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd pick in the draft to secure Bradford.....

Orton started first. That first game back in 2005 Orton was the starter.

Then next season Grossman comes in with a running game, defense, and special teams to lean on and they went to the bowl.

When Thomas Jones left the following season, and the injuries on their defense begin to mount up they couldn't mask Grossman anymore.

I don't know why the Redskins would ever so much as peek at another QB, at least so long as they have JC17 on the roster. Especially after all that young Jason has done for our fair city -- what with the recurring championships, pro bowl appearances and all, it's clearly apparent this city has never had, nor will it ever have again, another QB as talented and illustrious as JC17. Let's sign him to a lifetime contract -- and pay him franchise rates -- for as long as he cares to grace your nation's capital with his presence. What an all out winner!

Nonsense. If it was same ol' same ol', the 'Skins would have flown Peppers in today, not Chicago, and they wouldn't have let him leave without signing. He perfectly fits the profile of many past 'Skins free agents, a big name whose best days are probably behind him. With all of their needs, what did you expect them to do? Not even fly anyone in, and sit on their hands in free agency? Let's give them a chance to do something before we start criticizing their free agent strategy.

If Bradford is available he is a redskin, JC is being traded in the next week. Shanny won't keep Grossman and Campbell on the same squad. Or we bring in Spiller RB and another safety Mays unless Kyle sees something in JC he likes.

Posted by: MPWTIAN | March 5, 2010 3:51 PM | Report abuse

THE SKINS NEED TO DRAFT TAYLOR MAYS. With needs on the offensive line, linebacker corps, I still think the remaking of the next Sean Taylor (RIP) is the way to go with the fourth pick.

The skins should select Taylor Mays with the fourth pick, and bring in free agent lineman. I know the O line is our biggest weakness, but how can we pass up a 6'3/230 pound Free Safety that runs like like a track star after losing the greatest free safety that ever played the game.

RIP #21

I live in Florida. Rex was an okay college QB. He's just like all the other Florida QB's that was good in college not in the NFL. That would be a waiste of money to go after REX!! The only reason is he was in Kyle's offense. Still no REX!!!

Sure Rex was carried by his team into the superbowl. All he was asked to do was not turn the ball over and he did it well enough to go to the show. Thier are numerous QB's who have been carried and asked just to hang onto the ball. Ask Trent Dilfer. Putting up superstar numbers as a QB is a luxury not a necessity!

No the Skins think they can get a player or a draft pick in a trade.. that's why Campbell wasn't cut. Question is why would JC want to be here if it's just for a year.. learn a new system again only to be gone in 2011?? and not even get paid top dollar for it. "open" in college is not "open" in the NFL. move on. breathe in, breathe out, move on.

Rypien11 ---- a "4th round" QB? Surely you jest.

If campbell and grossman competed for the qb job campbell would beat him outright. It is no surprise that shanahan would draft a qb I hope not with the 4th pick, I dont see a rookie qb or grossman for that matter beating out campbell in 2010

Collins was the best QB the Redskins had

No, please. Not Rex Grossman! I would have to eat all the Rex Grossman jokes I've been making all these years. The humility! What next, Michael Vick?

they should bring in Heath Shuler and Ryan Leaf for a look too.

OK, did I miss a staff meeting? Who the frack is Richard Bartel, and when the hell did we sign him? And from whom? Where?

Never mind. Found him. This guy's gonna be a tackling dummy in training camp:

For those who care: Richard Bartel is a big (6-4 or 6-5, 230-ish) guy with a huge arm. Started at SMU, then left school to play pro baseball. Pitched in the Cincinnati Reds' minor-league system, then went back to school, finishing up at Tarleton State. If he really is 230, he's lighter than he was — when Dallas first signed him a few years ago, he was nearly 250 (but very solid, not fat). Whether he can play in Shanahan's offense, I have no idea. If nothing else, he's a big kid with a really powerful arm.

And ....

An offensive line would be a good start. All other remedies are useless until that is taken care of.

Because their problems are not at QB. They had years with a bad defense, bad offensive line, injuries, etc. No, Campbell isn't Peyton Manning, but a team can win with him. See what he looks like standing upright for more than a half a second before passing judgement.

Campbell is the best QB on that list, and only Rypien is close.

Yes. Offensive line. Offensive line. Offensive line.

"we PLEASE just start bringing in our OWN talent?"

____________

This doesn't even make any sense. So the Redskins are never allowed to participate in FA ever again or something? Don't the Redskins currently have two QB's that they drafted on their roster?

"Campbell is the best QB on that list, and only Rypien is close."

No, Campbell is nowhere close to ever holding Rypien's jockstrap. And it doesn't say much that he's "better" than guys like John Friez.

And before someone replies with "well, Rypien had a great OL!," let me just say that revisionist history is a wonderful thing (either that, or you're too young to remember those days).

The Hogs were a great OL--no denying that. But the myth that we could stick any piece of average crap behind them and win is silly. Joey T was a league MVP, Jay S was a Pro Bowler who had enough talent to yield a trade for the best LT in all of football, Doug Williams, while older, was still at one time a first round pick and one of the top QB's in the league, and Rypien's 91 season was absolutely stunning, regardless of the OL's play. Campbell wishes he had that kind of accuracy.
