Shanahan on Alexander, Daniels and Mike Williams
The Redskins have made a few of their signings official this afternoon, confirming they've re-signed defensive end Phillip Daniels, offensive lineman Mike Williams and Lorenzo Alexander, who's expected to move to outside linebacker. Center Casey Rabach wasn't on today's news release, but his signing should become official as soon as his contract is signed.
Here's what Coach Mike Shanahan had to say about each of the players in a statement released by the team ...
On Alexander: "Lorenzo is a versatile athlete who will contribute on our defense and on special teams. We are excited to have him as part of our program and look forward to working with him this offseason."
On Daniels: "We are excited to have Phillip onboard as we prepare for our offseason conditioning program."
On Williams: "Mike showed a tremendous work ethic and willingness to do whatever the team asked of him, and those are two of the traits we're looking for in Redskins players. We believe that he's only scratched the surface of his abilities so far, and look forward to seeing what he can do after a full offseason in our program."

Scratching I'm not worried about, it's when he sits on them that the problem begins...

I personally believe that U.S. American peoplearestupid1, like such as, the Iraq and the South Africa, need maps, to help the bamas find each other to settle, um, blog tough guy matters, and like such as, educate the Shanahan and the Allen, on the need for PLASH!

I tend to agree on Mike Williams. I think that he can become a decent RG. The man has the size, he has the strength, and he has the potential as he was a top 10 pick. He busted out as a tackle but that doesn't mean he cant play guard. Give him a full offseason at this playing weight, not haivng to drop 200 pounds and lets see what he can do. There is no harm in this as I am sure he was super cheap and its not like we have any better alternatives

even though as all of you professional scouts so intelligently pointed out that Collins was CLEARLY.. and I MEAN CLEARLY, the better player over the last2-3 years... interesting huh?
Posted by: peoplearestupid1 | March 5, 2010 1:43 PM

Collins was better than JC..but, he is also almost 40 years old.
Snyder wants to get back at least a First round pick for JC since he gave up a 1st, 3rd, and 4th and the 1st that he used as the actual pick.. Snyder is probably incredulous that he wasted all those picks on a bust. That is why the Skins have him dangling out there with a 1st Tender. However, Snyder couldnt even get a 3rd rounder for JC last year when he tried to move up for Sanchez..
Right now its interesting that no team is breaking down the door to get Jason. And it further validates the decision not to Offer him a Contract Extension.

wow people here hate campbell so much, they think hes worse than REX GROSSMAN? Are you serious? Rex has NEVER played as well as campbell has, even with a MUCH better oline in chicago. I am not saying Campbell is a good player, just that he is far superior to Rex Grossman...
If Sexy Rexy is our starting QB next year, we are in for a long season... not that we wont be anyway so whatever lets go for it... and appease the retards on this blog... clearly Campbell is 100% the problem and once we remove him from the team, 10-6 and a super bowl will follow.

Are you pre-menopausal? Geesh you are as sensitive as a dog with turpentine on his butt.
Grossman played last year in Shanny Jr.'s offense and word on the street is he didn't look half bad in practice.
Grossman got his team to the Superbowl. Campbell took his team to 4-12 last year.
The first round tender on Campbell means he's priced to move. Regardless of what we fans think, management has spoken with their actions and it will be a surprise if Campbell is here for training camp.
Next season is about a caretaker at QB and Grossman could fill that role as effectively as Campbell. I think the team is going to pick a QB this draft. That QB won't be a day one starter but as soon as they are drafted the clock will be ticking on whomever is in front of them.

Im disgusted I thought this front office knew what they were doing it seems that they are following the path left by vinny sign all the old lineman with nothing left in the tank for cheap and spend the big money on skill players mike williams should be working at a drive-thru and casey rabsch should be drinking beer in michigan in jon jansen's trailer. if this is the case we should have kept randy thomas at least he is a natural guard. i was expecting to see at least 4 new lineman minus Dockery i just lost a little faith in our front office and we haven't even played a game yet.

Did Shanahan make it sound like he wants to use Phillip Daniels as a strength coach or did I just read too much into that?

JC is available for a 1st rounder. A starting QB in the NFL is certainly worth a 1st round pick.. so, why dont those teams, you reference, make a move?
Because JC is not a legit NFL starter..He doesnt have the essentials to motivate and lead a team.
He could be a game managing back-up but, why give up a 1st for that?
Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | March 5, 2010 1:40 PM
Dude, JC will be starting again this year in the NFL. Book it. He got the same tender as Kyle Orton, whom you argued was far superior to JC because the Broncos coach preferred Orton during the Cutler fiasco... and 2,438 NFL GMs refused to give up a 3rd rounder for JC yadda yadda yadda.
Posted by: Alan4 | March 5, 2010 1:57 PM

If JC is so good.. why didnt Shanahan extend his Contract after watching every play from 2009 (as he said he did)?
The HC has spoken.. JC is not an NFL QB that will take you to the playoffs.. If so, Shanahan would of signed him.
All you JC lovahs can follow him to his new team, as a backup. The signal has been sent that he is not wanted in Ashburn. Actually Snyder, with his Sanchez crush, sent that message last year.

So.... how do ya'll feel about JC at QB?
SkinsneedaGM, Vic1, P1funk, hock.... ,
1. What do you think would resolve the QB position? (corrollary: do other players have any role?)
2. Why do you think the Skins missed the playoffs so often even BEFORE JC took over the QB position?
3. Do you believe JC is better than ANY of the dozen or so QBs who started between Mark Rypien and JC? How about Friesz? Schuler? Frerotte? Green? George? Banks? Matthews? Wuerffel? Ramsey? Hasselbeck?
4. Is you answer to #1 any different than what's already been tried during the QB carousel that brought us 1st round draft picks like Schuler and Ramsey, or "stars" like Jeff George?

Good move signing Mike Williams -- I think he actually played well at RG for 2 games until he got injured.
Under Shanahan, maybe he gets in better shape and stays on the field longer.
With Dockery and Williams, Redskins have size inside to make the running game go.
Would like them to be able to trade down and draft 2 offensive tackles to begin the youth movement on the offensive line.

So, help me understand this. The 3-4 defense linebacker corps would look like:
Starting outside linebackers:
Orakpo, McIntosh
2nd team:
Wilson, Alexander
Starting inside linebackers:
Fletcher, Carter
2nd team:
Blades, Henson
Do I have it right?
Additional team needs:
Free Safety (so we can move Landry to strong safety, leaving Kareem Moore as the only FS; Darren Sharper?)
Cornerback (to take Smoot's place/Westbrook gone after DUI?)
Starting DE (to go with Haynesworth and Golston, assumes Daniels and Jarmon are the backups)
Nose Tackle (to back up Haynesworth and Montgomery)
2 Offensive tackles (Levi Jones can be one as starter or backup but still need at least 2 more -- NOT Heyer)
2 Running Backs (to back up Portis and Ganther)
1 Wide Receiver (to take Randle El's place; need 5th guy afte Moss, Thomas, Kelly, an d Mitchell)
Tell me what you think. Am I missing something?

So, help me understand this. The 3-4 defense linebacker corps would look like:
Starting outside linebackers:
Orakpo, McIntosh
I THINK THIS IS RIGHT, BUT IF WE KEEP ANDRE CARTER HE MAY PLAY OLB, BUT I DON'T THINK WE WILL
2nd team:
Wilson, Alexander
I DON'T KNOW HOW LORENZO ALEXANDER GOES FROM PLAYING OL AND DTACKLE TO OLB
Starting inside linebackers:
Fletcher, Carter
NO WAY CARTER PLAYS INSIDE LB
2nd team:
Blades, Henson
SURE
Do I have it right?
Additional team needs:
Free Safety (so we can move Landry to strong safety, leaving Kareem Moore as the only FS; Darren Sharper?)
DARREN SHARPER WOULD BE NICE, ANTREL ROLLE WOULD BE NICER, CAN RYAN CLARK PLAY FS? I DON'T THINK SO BUT WOULD LOVE HIM BACK...
Cornerback (to take Smoot's place/Westbrook gone after DUI?)
WESTBROOK IS NOT THE ANSWER, TRYON AND BARNES NEED TO STEP UP BEHIND ROGERS/HALL
Starting DE (to go with Haynesworth and Golston, assumes Daniels and Jarmon are the backups)
I THINK DE IS A MIXTURE, JARMON AND/OR DANIELS MAY START, I EXPECT AT LEAST ONE MORE TO BE ADDED
Nose Tackle (to back up Haynesworth and Montgomery)
AGREE
2 Offensive tackles (Levi Jones can be one as starter or backup but still need at least 2 more -- NOT Heyer)
LEVI JONES IS AN OUTSIDE POSSIBILITY AT RT, WE NEED TO DRAFT AND/OR SIGN TWO TACKLES THAT CAN START IMMEDIATELY
2 Running Backs (to back up Portis and Ganther)
DRAFT A SPEED GUY TO RETURN KICKS AND CHANGE PACE, WE NEED JOE MCKNIGHT STYLE BIG PLAY POTENTIAL
1 Wide Receiver (to take Randle El's place; need 5th guy afte Moss, Thomas, Kelly, an d Mitchell)
MOSS, THOMAS, KELLY, MITCHELL A YOUNG GUY WITH A LATE ROUND DRAFT PICK
Tell me what you think. Am I missing something?

Alan 4,
Here's my quiz...
1) Have a set plan of attack. Know what QB you want to build your system around, or if you feel you have that ready to go system largely in place...have a list of Qbs who are capable of fitting that system [in physicall attributes, and skill set]...and get one.
2) Trying to hammer a QB into a system they don't fit, or allowing poor roster and cap management to creat deficiencies on either unit [offense or defense] as they struggled to overcompensate for the deficient unit the following season...creating the SAME problem on the opposite unit...again, and again, and again.
3) Is JC better than?
Friesz? A better ATHLETE, not a better QB
Schuler? at the pro level, YES
Frerotte? No
Green? [Trent] Are you kidding? no...
George? A better ATHLETE...YES, a better person...HECK YES, not a better QB tho.
Banks? Tough call, both had some rough supporting casts. Push.
Matthews? A better ATHLETE, not a better QB
Wuerffel? Push
Ramsey? JC Better
Hasselbeck? No
Nor is Campbell better than Stan Humphries...
4) Yes. Bring in a PROVEN veteran who can run whatever system the Shanahans want to run. Draft a young QB in mid rounds who can be raised in that system. Let the vet run it until the draftee is ready.
It's just that simple.
