Will Redskins pursue quarterback in draft and free agency?

One fun offseason game we can all play is trying to figure out what a team's free agency manuevering reveals about its draft-day plans. For example, if the Redskins would've signed Chad Clifton, they might not have used that No. 4 on a left tackle, right?

So in that vein, what do we make of their offseason pursuit of quarterbacks? In addition to the report last week that the Redskins have expressed interest in Rex Grossman, the Miami Herald reported today that the Redskins also made overtures for Chad Pennington, who's instead re-signing with the Dolphins.

Does this mean the Redskins envision a quarterback roster of Jason Campbell, Jimmy Clausen/Sam Bradford and then a veteran such as Grossman or Pennington? Or are they simply trying to lineup a backup for Campbell, a guy who would essentially replace Todd Collins as the clipboard-holder? (Or Option C, are they simply getting ready to move Campbell via trade?)

The Redskins obviously need to add at least one more quarterback to the roster via draft or free agency. But maybe their plan has them nabbing a quarterback in both.

What about the second coming? Colt Brennan I think his name is. Change the name to Redskins Speculator.

Draft a tackle. We don't have one legit starter on the roster yet.

FYI - I hate tebow im glad someone called it out. I want lineman with both our first picks personally

Campbell, Rogers, McIntosh, Carter, Fletch, Landry, Cooley. 4 of 7 are not going to be in a Skins jersey in 2010; with Campbell being one of them.

Face it folks, this team needs to rebuild and other organizations are going to reach out about veteran guys on the roster...i.e the reason for Cooley's name in the above list. I see Rex Grossman and a guy like Derek Anderson or Delhomme coming in to compete for the starting job...similar to Jake Plummer's role back in Denver.

Hopefully, through trades, they can acquire some decent draft picks in 2010/2011, and be ready to be a playoff contender 2-3 years from now. Any fan that thinks they have a shot to be great in 2010 is asinine and should turn in their fan card.

Franchise QB will come in 2011 draft.

Who needs a QB anyway? Just run the wildcat with CJ Spiller and Hunter Smith. Problem solved.

Posted by: Section104 | March 9, 2010 12:48 PM | Report abuse

TRADE CAMPBELL! TRADE CAMPBELL! TRADE CAMPBELL!

See if you can get a first rounder for him and if not then settle for nothing less than a second round pick. Then draft a lineman with our first overall pick. Once we get the first or second round pick for the Campbell trade then select another lineman with that selection. Then use the second round selection that we already have and select a QB such as Clausen.

Good call, might have to get that 6th round pick back to snag Tebow.

Why do the Skin's need to rebuild? With a better defensive scheme and a more productive offense - we are playoff ready. We did not lose any games by large margins last year. We were in every one of them. Our defense kept them close. The only thing we were missing was a GM, a coach that made in game adjustments, better playcalling and an O-line. We have the GM, we have the coach, we should get better playcalling and hopefully - we will get a better, NFL caliber O'line. We do not have to rebuild. We do have to infuse our current roster with younger players with upside and middle-tier vets. Our won/lost record suggests that we need to rebuild. The way we lost - game by game - shows that we do not need to rebuild. We can win this year.

Hightek-

Nobody would give us a 1st or 2nd rounder for Campbell. He has a 1st round tender, and no one is pursuing him even now.

Also Clausen won't be there in the 2nd round (not that we would want him anyway). Your whole plan is not plausible.

A first or second rounder for campbell? Ha! That's hilarious.

Posted by: ZardsFan1 | March 9, 2010 1:38 PM | Report abuse

If JC stays and the O'line improves - the Skin's will make the playoffs and JC will be an All Pro this coming season. Taking on all bets!!!

Posted by: SPUD2 | March 9, 2010 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Just because a free agent QB isn't signed by the draft doesn't mean there won't be a good one availabel before camp in July. I still like the idea od frafting a left tackle and right tackle with the first two draft picks. Picking 4th and 36th the 'Skins could solve that problem for a decade or more.

Allen and Shanahan don't appear to be in the rebuilding mode. They have not committed to "the future is now" approach, but they are clearly not rebuilding. They have purged the roster of dead weight and are interviewing middle tier players who can contribute and add depth at positions if not starters. I think they plan on winning right away, which is why they tendered JC with 1st round money, looking at FAs who can make an immediate impact and getting rid of high cost guys who were not performing well. They will create a highly competitive training camp - all jobs are open, which will lead to a highly competitive team during the regular season.

Option C. Skins are going to draft a QB.. right now I'm hoping for Clausen. They will keep Brennan. Colt costs almost nothing and might develop into a good enough QB to either keep or trade in future. Campbell is the out man. No sense signing a guy who doesn't want to be a backup or a bridge to the new guy which means the Skins will have to dump him in a year.. Skins will look for a veteran guy who can start the season if need be and be a solid backup when the young guy is ready...

1. Skins trade Campbell and next year's
2nd round pick to the Rams for Alex
Barron and this year's 3rd round pick.
2. Skins sign Rex Grossman and draft
Bradford.
3. Grossman starts the first 10-11 games
before Bradford takes over and starts
his Hall-of-Fame career

There will be open QB competition this year, something we've not had for a while.

Jason is a Redskin unless they get a high price (1st or maybe 2nd) which isn't going to happen. Shanahan's are not sold on Jason but know they need his experience as insurance. Colt is also here, he's healthy and will be in the mix to start.

Skins are looking at a third option, if they get a good vet for decent money, they are finished with QB.

Their interest in FA QB's indicate they plan to go OT at #4.

Has anybody realize that MS gave JC a first round tender because he knows what he has at QB and he figures no one would go after him. We will take the best offensive lineman available with our first to picks and have a veteran back-up at QB. If there is a QB available in the later rounds we will grab him. Don't be suprise if CJ is picked up with the first pick since we need a RB.

Posted by: onestorm | March 9, 2010 4:37 PM | Report abuse

coparker...my thoughts.

1. skins trade campbell for a straight up swap of the #4 for #1 pick in this years draft (maybe a late round pick for the Rams next season)
2. Same as you noted
3. same as you noted

Whatever it takes to walk away from the draft with

Sam Bradford
Montario Hardesty
and 2 O-linemen

Anything else is just gravy

any news on the possible uniform change?

And if nobody goes after him.. even teams that pick far down in the 1st round like Arizona and Minn.. what do we have? Yeah MS knows what he has.. he has a QB that nobody else wants!!! Isn't that a hint that maybe we shouldn't want him either???

Mark my words... if the skins do not go for Tim Tebow... we WILL regret it for many years to come.

All Jason does is repeatedly talk about Campbell (brainless QB) or QB's that the media talking heads throw out there to detract from the best QB coming out this year. Some team already has Tebow in their sights... that you can be sure of... and they definitely are trying to deflect it from the Skins... sadly, people like Jason are falling for it and perpetuating it.

Jason, start talking about the best QB in the 2010 draft. Tim Tebow and the possibility that he is our man. He has the heart and he is a TRUE leader... exactly what the skins need! We've tried the pure "athlete" in Campbell... and he just lacks the heart, soul and brains to get the job done. Now let's go for the guy that has the heart and wants to win!

Posted by: BigQEd | March 9, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

All those that do not believe Tim Tebow is the #1 QB... ask yourself why you believe that.

1) The Media says so?
2) Stats? (Odd, Tim Tebow leads Bradford and Clausen in Completion % and YPA for his college tenure)
3) Maybe its his slow foot speed? Or slow reactions? ... funny, Tim Tebow was the top performing QB at the Combine. The only thing "rumored" was that he held the ball a "oddly"... which funny enough is very similiar to a one Steve Young.
4) Think about it... if you didn't have a top 10 pick... would you not try to talk a guys value down so that maybe just maybe he would be available for your slot when it came around?

Tim Tebow, is without a doubt the #1 QB in the 2010 Draft. Bar none. In fact he would be the best since Manning. His heart and intensity alone propels him to the number #1 spot if not for his talent.

Video that made me stop and realize why the Skins need Tebow's intensity and heart...

Redskins have wasted 1st round picks in the past on Jason Campbell and Patrick Ramsey. I hope they don't waste another 1st round pick on Claussen/QB from Notre Dame. Doesn't matter who they put at QB with this Offensive line. Snyder/Vinny completely wrecked this team, it will take years to rebuild. The franchise is a joke, I can't believe people would waste the money for season tickets any more, Sunday afternoons must be pretty boring in D.C., if people can't find something better to do with their time than sit at Fedex and watch this bunch of clowns. And please somebody tell those guys wearing the pignoses (hogs) to GET A LIFE. That entire Hog theme is really old and no longer legit. Skins will be lucky to win 4 games this year. Poor Shanahan is in for a long season.

I think the Redskins should go with Russell Okung in the first round in order to better the offensive line. then with the second round pick grab a quarterback such as Tim Tebow or Colt McCoy. In free agency we should resign Levi Jones to fill another gap on the offensive line.
