Willie Parker, Redskins discuss whether he's the right RB

Running back Willie Parker was scheduled to arrive at Redskins Park around 5 p.m. Monday night, so potential contract talks were not expected to begin until today.

It seems the Redskins must add another veteran back to the roster to at least share the load with Clinton Portis, who reported to camp out of shape in 2009 and missed the last eight games after suffering a concussion on Nov. 8 in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Portis, who is guaranteed at least $6.4 million next season, recently expressed excitement to Rick Maese about being reunited with former Denver Broncos running backs coach Bobby Turner, who was Portis' first position coach in the NFL.

But new Coach Mike Shanahan, who traded Portis from the Broncos, expects the eight-year veteran to commit to the team's offseason conditioning program. Also, how much does Portis have left?

Parker's production has dropped considerably since he rushed for at least 1,200 yards in three consecutive seasons from 2005-07. Slowed because of injuries last season, he dropped to second on the depth chart and only had 389 yards in 14 games.

In hopes of getting his career back on track, Parker, who had a base salary of $3.35 million during the 2009 season, might be willing to accept an incentive-laden deal with little guaranteed money from the Redskins.

With a better attitude, I can see 'somewhat fast' Willie Parker actually taking over the starting spot. He and Portis are on the same level to me.

First to say Clinton Tortoise?

FIRST to say pass on Fast Willie Parker. We've already got an old, washed up RB here, that's more than enough...

If he comes cheap, he might be a good insurance policy if Portis really can't go. Shanny seems to be real interested in improving team speed and Parker used to be a burner. He's had some injuries, so an incentive laden contract makes sense. Do these guys sign pending a team physical?

Come on fast Willie, sign on the dotted line!!

I can't help but take it as a positive sign that the Post now has seemingly ZERO access or insight into what is going on at Redskins Park.

Although this blog does seem pretty much irrelevant now. I get more information from the comments than the original posts.

I say pull the trigger on this one. As if my opinion has any bearing on the Redskins front office

Should take a look at Westbrook too.

Big question with both these guys is their health.

The Mayor still takin' shots. Ya never did divulge the bias. What gives.

I'm all for bringing in another back, but given CPo's attitude & cost, the FO should play their cards right.

Communication is key.

You are kidding right? There aren't close to being on the same level.

what's up with the guard from Indy that got released?

NO to Slow Willie Parker

I may be in the minority here, but this is what I think:

Clinton is not done, I think he pulled a Randy Moss and said f*ck it last year. The coach couldn't motivate this guy like Gibbs or Shanny could. Portis had no respect for Zorn.

With a better line next year, and CP in shape and ready to go, and actually practicing he could have another huge year. 1500 yds and 12 TD. I think Shanny and Bobby Turner light a fire under him and he has a big year for us.

Bring in Willie Parker for a little friendly competition.

I think that this will be a great year for our new blocking fullback, Clinton Portis.

He can make holes for our new starting RB Willie Parker...

A bit of payback for being a clubhouse cancer...if he makes it through the season tender him for whatever we can get...maybe a can of spam?

Posted by: shanahananigans | March 9, 2010 11:28 AM | Report abuse

if nothing else sign him to help light a fire under portis' @$$

Posted by: goskinsgo1 | March 9, 2010 11:31 AM | Report abuse

not only that but if shanny does pick an rb in the draft y not have two veterans with good pedigrees to help groom the rookie

And Westbrook is a concussion away from retiring!

I don't want any "high and mighty" Steelers on my team. Their players and their fans walk around like their sh!t don't stank.

We're gonna be losers for the next 2 years, at least let us be losers with players I like.

Lilja, the recently released starting OG from the Colts is worth a look.

So CP said "f*ck it" last year...so he needs to "be motivated"...so he needs competition...so he had no respect for his head-coach.
And you people want to keep this trash around?
Listen, we could do just as well with an undrafted free-agent rookie making the league minimum, who will practice every week and show up and give 100% every game.
Give me a break. CP is a chump.
