It's a Wrap: Skins 23, Eagles 17

Dominant running game, exhibited by the three-yard gain on 4th and 2 to put the game away.

More heady stuff from Jason Campbell, like the tuck and run to pick up a crucial late first down on third-and-long. The Redskins showed they can be diverse - WR Santana Moss, second in the NFL in yards - was not a factor at all save for blocking and as a decooy, and they still rolled.

The defense was stellar again. They bottled up Westbrook after that opening drive. Carter, Fletcher and McIntosh were all sellar. Another great day from the secondary, even without Springs. Andy Reid's playbook went dry after opening drive - no deep shots?? nothing else tricky for Jackson - and the Skins punched another team in the mouth.

Great win for the Skins, and three cupcakes coming up.

No kidding!! But still HUGE STATEMENT to the entire league!

Well I do think that we better not get too cocky. STL, DET, and CLE will probably come to FedEx Field with no more than 1 or 2 wins at most. They will be desperate. PIT seems like the next competitive game. WSH probably should win 3 out of the next 4. Maybe I'm think that PIT is better than they are.

But I do fear that STL, DET, or CLE will get a win. They will win a game at some point. I just hope that it's not against the Redskins.

Rams are going to be hungry for a win on Sunday, especially with all the drama of the last week - they cannot be overlooked. We don't want to dominate Dallas and Philly in their house and then lose to the Rams at home!

Posted by: suzannepdc | October 5, 2008 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Only thing I would of liked to see more of is Moss getting the ball. But overall, great win. And to think, Springs, Taylor, and Washington didn't even play.

Gibbs would not have gone for it on 4th down, and would have punted. the prevent D we'd play next would prevent a victory fot the skins. This is GibbsII BTW. I was not referring to GibbsI who was much morre dynamic a playcaller.

The thing that strikes me most about this game is the adjustments that both the O and D are making. Knocked around all first quarter, they looked like a different team. I don't know, maybe it wasn't adjustments, maybe it was just execution. In any event, they didn't get flustered and very quickly regained their confidence and footing. I think that was about as dominating as you can expect in an NFC East game -- which is to say they're all going to be pretty close.

Thank you jiacinto...my sentiments exactly. Let us forget about that danm bandwagon, do not purchase any playoff tickets yet. This is only five games into a long season. Let us give credit to our un-tried, un-seasoned head coach Zornie. I said that to say this. Coach Joe coached not to lose; Zornie coaches to WIN. Let us just hope he does not start reading his press clippings thus getting his underpants in a bind. The Skins' have created a nice cushion for themselves up to this point. Remember only five games info a long seasona. Hail Skins.!!!!!

I worry about one of the next three games. Those teams will desperate for wins. I think that WAS should win them all, but there's always one upset that happens.

Posted by: jiacinto | October 5, 2008 4:31 PM | Report abuse

lsskinfan, I said the exact same thing about Gibbs. God love him, but he didn't have "it" anymore and would've possibly cost us that game by punting, which would've been marginally different than a failed 4th down run....Zorn is the real deal and anybody that thinks CP isn't still a top 10 back is lost.

Great win. HAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jason Campbell playing as well as any QB in the league. Makes no mistakes, makes great throws... I couldn't ask for more.

Awesome job by Suisham. A few really great plays by London Fletcher.

Was that Durant Brooks' last game?

just saying it again. The NFL MVP is ... London Fletcher. He perfectly covers Westbrook on 2nd down, then open field tackles him on 3rd down.

Fletcher runs the defense and they gave up just 10 points. Outstanding. MVP outstanding.

this one's gonna be a laugher for the Eagles...

Posted by: Schroeder12 | October 5, 2008 1:35 PM

Going back to the comments around 1:30 is pretty funny. A big moment was at the end of the first half and the Skins were at their own 16. Zorn went after it and ended up with a 50 yarder to make it 14-9. Huge! Then the 4th and 1 that iced it. I was definitely yelling at the TV. But when you succeed you look smart. I like it. I will always love Gibbs but he managed too tight second time around. Cant wait to go to FED EX next weekend!!!!

Im concerned about our punt coverage tho. We gotta lock that crap down if we want to be a serious contender.

Was that Durant Brooks' last game?

Posted by: beatkal | October 5, 2008 4:38 PM | Report abuse

NO. Remember, after the one returned for TD, he was usually punting from midfield, so he was trying to hit the punts real high to allow coverage to surround Jackson. I don't think you can just look at his stats.

Posted by: frediefritz | October 5, 2008 4:49 PM | Report abuse

Getting Chris Cooley involved in the game proves to be the KEY!!!! Hail!!!!

Posted by: skinsforlife | October 5, 2008 4:50 PM | Report abuse

I'm thinking all those close games played in 2007 helped this team develop the mental toughness it needed. With Zorn being more aggressive, this team is winning close games against very good teams, even on the road. That is special to see.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | October 5, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

While we are talking about Brooks... he needs to stop trying to but ice crystals on the ball and instead work on his aiming. From the 50 yard line you should be able to bury it inside the 20 every time, and if they field it, they are contained against the sideline, if not, you have a chance it will bounce out. Today he punted two from about the 50 that ended up at the 19 and the 23... to me, whats the point of trying to avoid the touchback if they fair catch it at the 20 anyway?

Posted by: mattsoundworld | October 5, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

Superb defensive effort again today, and that was without Springs and Taylor.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | October 5, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Thundershock | October 5, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

And my comment was more about ALL 3 of them being that size. I have not seen how they handle the pass. But gotta worry about the run, and get one of these beasts trying to keep up with Cooley. Cooley needs 12 catches and 2 TDS Sunday to loosen this D up.

Posted by: 4thFloor | October 5, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

overcame Philly, overcame the road, overcame two questionable calls. The ref picks up the flag on the Jackson punt return. And from what I could tell, ARE was not touched on that play late in the 4th, and he was on his way for 6.

Skins have won despite not getting the breaks on some key plays. By my count, at least 6 TDs plays (or likely TDs) went against us (2 on the same drive)

1. Heyer penalty calls back Thomas TD vs Zona
2&3 Rabach penalty call back 2 TDs vs dal
4 Flag picked up on today's punt return
5 ARE not touched but called down
6 Moss catch vs NYG where he juggled it and was untouched but called down

Posted by: zcezcest1 | October 5, 2008 4:59 PM | Report abuse

I love how Zorn leans on the run, tho. In the 4th quarter he calls a grinding game that would make Gibbs proud, and backs it up with balls of steel.

PIT is their next tough game. I will say they will sweep the next three, provided that they don't let the last tree wins get to their heads. But PIT will be a very tough game.

I realize everyone is giddy now, great win, no question.

May I disagree w/ a few posts that have repeated a theme?

The idea that we are winning despite not having Springs, Washington, Taylor....

Yes, we are weaker w/out Springs.
But after these last two weeks I actually think we are stronger vs. the run w/ Evans than Jason Taylor and Marcus Washington has played his best games for us.
We are better w/ out Marcus.

Don't be surprised if Skins rotate Taylor and Evans because Evans is definitely holding his ground better vs. the run.

I admit that I doubted the team early in the season. Snyder's track record on assembling teams -- not so good. But these guys are playing with all the guts of the Gibbs teams, but newfound offensive aggressiveness and savvy in-game adjustments, like Gibbs 1.0.
My faith in the franchise had staled over years of bumbling, the signing of overpriced, false messiahs, the decades of stumbling through the desert of mediocrity. But now that faith has been renewed, and I have been ZORN AGAIN in the burgundy light.

Now, now.
My friend Chris Larry,
I agree with you that is just beyond dumb.

But my friend, Chris Larry, that is not what I even said.
What I said was after the last two weeks we are stronger vs. the run w/ Evans than Jason Taylor. Evans Is INDEED holding his ground / space better than Jason did in earlier games.

Fair enough?

Power rankings have to have 3 NFC East teams in the top 3 if the 'Girlz destroy Cincy.

1 Giants
2 Skins

5 Pathers (if Bills lose)

LOL that is awesome, hahahha. I don't agree w/ CP, but love it that HE SAID it, and that the Redskins have an "us against the League" mentality. That will help them maintain their edge and focus after the entire national press will now move en masse onto the Redskin's bandwagon. Zorn and the team leaders will now have their work cut out to ensure the team maintains its hungry edge to keep their noses to the grindstone.

Let's not forget that most of the teams we've played would rather throw 1st then run,.... Unlike the Rams ( who will be coming off of a bye, w/ Haslett at the helm ) who would love to pound Jackson 35 times if their D could hold someone under 30 pts before the half. I just keep waiting for us to have one of those games w/ multiple TO's,... maybe it's the last decade of waiting for the other shoe to drop syndrome???

It is my hope Evans will continue to get playing time when Jason returns.
It does clearly help us vs. the run and Jason can be fresher to rush the passer.

Lets play them both alot!

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | October 5, 2008 5:41 PM | Report abuse

How do you win games?

On offense, control the ball don't turn it over. On defense, don't overplay or get too elastic.

It's Occam's Razor for football. The simplest solution is the best.

Posted by: BrooklynBS | October 5, 2008 5:41 PM | Report abuse

I heard on ESPN Radio them talking about the Giants win over the Seahawks. I can't believe I heard them actually say after this win, no one can say they have not played a good team yet.

Since win did a pathetic 1-3 team becomme a good team. Giants have not played a good team all year. The best team they played was us and we are so different from Game 1.

Although they are undefeated, I would say we are a better team. Let's take care of business against these weaker teams like they have done and things will work oout for themselves.

Giants still have to play Dallas and Philly twice each, @Pitt, @Arizona, Balt, Carolina, @Minn.

We shall see.

I friggin love the way this team gets after it in the second half. Zorn is really taking alot of pressure off the defense by taking some chances with the game on the line. I guess he believes he can beat anyone with his play calling. He's putting it all on him. If they don't make the 1st down and the iggles score...he takes the heat. He has a huge set!!

RedskinsRay and all,

I agree somwhat with the value of getting your 2nd stringers experience under fire, but there is a reason why the other guys were the first starters. When healthy, Jason Taylor is a true stud, period. He has not been healthy yet. if he gets healthy the defense moves up several spots because we get a markedly faster pass rush. Shawn springs makes this defense work with the people we have. God bless London Fletcher for being able to make phenominal pressure plays at the right time, but Springs allows us to never be in that position. he takes out the #1 threat on the other team and allows an extra man in the box or blitz. The rest of our CB's are place holders.

And we are better off without Marcus? No way. Are we better off not having to depend on Marcus to be an every down player? Absolutley, but because of his presence, young players feed off Marcus and he definitely can contribute 20-25 quality plays a game. Of course as I said earlier in a post, his 100% healthy days are gone. He has beaten up his body too many years. When he returns he shouldn't be considered the every down starter but he we are definitely not better off without him.

NO. Remember, after the one returned for TD, he was usually punting from midfield, so he was trying to hit the punts real high to allow coverage to surround Jackson. I don't think you can just look at his stats.

We've now come from behind to get three of our four wins. The fact that this team can do that, that they don't panic just because they're down a couple of scores, bodes well for the rest of the season.

I just went back to remind myself of the nasty, mean-spirited hate that Sally Jenkins had for Dan Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato when they hired Jim Zorn, and of her condescension toward coach Zorn.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/10/AR2008021002586.html

"Even if the whole thing turns out to be another of Snyder's juvenile misadventures at the ticket holder's expense, focus on the positive: At least you are important in the life of a child."

"The pessimistic view is that Zorn was hired because stronger candidates rejected the job, and because he is malleable enough to suit Snyder and executive vice president Vinny Cerrato. But we're not going to think that way, are we? Instead we're going to polish our affirmation crystals and tell ourselves that Zorn, 54, is a good find who was somehow missed by the rest of the league, that he was just waiting to be chosen by someone with the penetrating insight to recognize he can be the game's next great."

I hope we'll read another gem from this woman soon to explain how, even though the Redskins are 4-1, the front office is manned by stooges.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | October 5, 2008 6:17 PM | Report abuse

Jason Campbell said that Zorn was jumping up and down on the sideline before the game so he asked him "Coach, are you going to play? Do you want my shoulder pads?"

Zorn told him no that he was just getting ready for the game. Too funny.

The hottest team in the NFL still has not committed an offensive turnover, has now shut down several of the most potent defenses in the NFL, and embarrassed two of the most powerful defensive units, in their houses, in Dallas and Philly. With essentially the same parts as last year, the bulk of the credit has to go to the astoundingly good play calling, game plans and preparation from (Coach of the Year) Zorn and Blache (who is like Richie Pettibon reincarnated) and their staffs. But let's not forget Vinny Cerato essentially taking over, making the Zorn call, and evdidently contributing to the right draft day choices, based on the results to this point. Nobody could have predicted this; Hail and GO SKINS! (dallas sux) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Will catch up on all the comments later, but these two quick hitters:

a. The Eagles... they're not who I thought they were.

2. Last year dcsween's keen eye spotted something not quite right with Santana's wrist, and this preseason I think he warned us about ARE's wrist... not that they were "easy" catches, but ARE had three drops that would have been first downs, fastballs from Soup that hit him in the hands. The kinds of balls you might drop if, say, one of your wrists was hurting you.

okay, a bonus hitter,

c. Nickname for one of my favoritest plays, the "Campbell Scramble"

I agree the punter has issues. 2 bad punters in a row me thinks its not our players but our punting coaches. Don't want to throw Danny Smith under the bus but maybe they need to get Ray Guy over hear from the kids college.

This team really takes "fight on, fight on, 'til you have won sons of Washington" to a new level. Hip hip hooray for JZ and the comeback kids.
