Gameday Sunday!

Sure, he didn't actually send a guestblog, but Chris Larry asked for a gameday thread, so here we go! I'm untanned and rested and ready for some fubball.

Cyn Cyndy you are indeed THE BOMB!!!!

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 1:10 PM | Report abuse

The 1 p.m. games aren't terribly compelling...most of them could eat their dinner out of a bowl on the floor.
Mets-Marlins, Phillies-Nats...lots to watch today! And, of course, there's the NASA channel.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Alright hamsters...I got Jets/Bills covered (great...) but need break in updates from you people with other games!

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 1:11 PM | Report abuse

Lightning delay in Miami. Thanks Chris Larry! I AM the bomb! :)

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Yeah got the Mets on "last" button....keep updated on Nats...

I am not a Mets fan, but here in NYC I cant deal with sad mets fans and its fun when both NYC baseball teams are in post season...so go mets...go nats...go brewers...

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 1:13 PM | Report abuse

I'm watching Red Zone Channel...will provide updates as they happen.

Miami is building an ark and accumulating two of everything: two blondes, two brunettes, two red heads, etc.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:13 PM | Report abuse

It is inexplicable to me that Joey Harrington sucks in the NFL. The guy throws a really pretty ball. I guess there's more to playing QB than throwing the ball.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:14 PM | Report abuse

I have Boys-Rams, Ravens-Browns, Jetsies-Bills, Packers-Vikings, Bears-Lion. No Mets, tho. Can you cover Mets, Chris Larry?

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:15 PM | Report abuse

hmmm cyn cyndy i thinks just us....very intimate..

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 1:15 PM | Report abuse

What team does Sammy Sosa play for? He was at the bar last night doing shots with me and hitting on my bartender.

I could go to mlb.com and look it up but I'm too lazy and hungover...who made the baseball playoffs this year?

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Perhaps Sammy, now with the Texas Strangers, was looking for discarded cork with which to stuff his bat. So to speak.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:20 PM | Report abuse

1-0 florida...glavine look weak

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 1:20 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Nice one Cindy! :-)

Official word from my bartender friend: "Sammy is a total SJK."

There were a bunch of Mariners at the bar last night as well. I wouldn't know any of them from a lampost, but my date made sure I got the play by play. I will say this for professional athletes...wherever they go, you can be assured that there is a veritable cornucopia of fake boobs to observe.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:24 PM | Report abuse

"Johnny Jolly" with a fumble recovery in Green Bay.

Cleveland TD, Braylon Edwards. The Browns may be for real this year. That's my boy, Derek Anderson.

Glavine had the worst outing of his career on the Mets biggest game this season...in what might be Glavines last game as met or even ever

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 1:35 PM | Report abuse

What's the movie, Diddy?

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:36 PM | Report abuse

These 1:00 games blow. Like the Rams shutting out the Boys so far tho.

CL - don't root for the Mets man. The Phillies got a bunch of good blue collar players and deserve to get in the way the have been playing the last month and the Mets pulling an all time choke job.

Posted by: cdubb | September 30, 2007 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Touchdown Atlanta.

Did I mention how much I hate bye weeks? Yuck.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Unbelievable!

Oh man is the NYC media gonna be rabid dogs....

"Lust/Caution". It's been getting very interesting reviews...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:39 PM | Report abuse

I really needed a bye this week, but I'm gacking over the fact that it's now 13 straight, intense weeks!

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:39 PM | Report abuse

Bah, My Boy Derek Anderson just threw a pick. Maybe I should send the jersey back...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:41 PM | Report abuse

That's the Ang Lee movie....I've read that it's too long, but still good.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Cindy, think how WE feel! Think of all the hangover Sundays where we have to wake up early, roll out of bed, and watch television. 13 straight weeks of not being able to watch the Red Zone Channel. 13 straight weeks of Lucky Oreo Pizza. 13 straight weeks of pacing around the living room in my bunny slippers. I'm going to need to find a coping strategy of some kind.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:42 PM | Report abuse

Ang Lee is hot-cold to me...

Loved The Icestorm/Crouching....HATED The Hulk!

Posted by: charlie | September 30, 2007 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Yup, and Ang Lee will be there tonight. I have to say, I am actually excited to meet him. The rumor with that movie is that the big love scene is actually real. I think that's totall bullSJK, personally. It took 100 hours to film that one scene!

Culpepper with a TD, Romo with a pick.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:44 PM | Report abuse

I understand CL. Its easy to hate the Philly teams. I'm biased since I root for all of them except the Eagles who I despise for obvious reasons being a Skins fan.

How are the Bills shredding anyone? Didn't they start some dude rookie QB from Stanford. The NFL is so unpredictable and watered down with average teams.

Posted by: cdubb | September 30, 2007 1:46 PM | Report abuse

Agree, CL. "Eat Drink Man Woman", "The Ice Storm", "Sense and Sensibility", and "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" were all exceptional. Since then? Eh...

I still haven't seen "Ride With the Devil", though I think I own it in my collection...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Whenever I hear of Carlos Delgado, I always think of that elementary school rhyme: "Senor Del Gato was a cat..."

I remember having to play it on the recorder.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know how it would play out if the Padres lost and the Mets, Phillies, and Rockies all won their games? It would be a tie in the NL East, and then a 4-way tie for the wildcard, not sure how that tiebreaker would be solved.

Posted by: Wondering.... | September 30, 2007 1:58 PM | Report abuse

cdubb...The Phillies are highly likable I have to admit...

Four teams with same record

If Colorado, New York and Philadelphia win Sunday and San Diego loses, all would finish 89-73. New York and Philadelphia would play the NL East tiebreaker Monday; the loser would play a three-team, two-day, wild-card tiebreaker with Colorado and San Diego on Tuesday and Wednesday. In that scenario, Colorado (the team with the best head-to-head record among the three teams in the wild-card tiebreaker) would get the choice of having a bye on Tuesday or playing both games at home.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 2:08 PM | Report abuse

This is hilarious! Billick didn't throw the challenge flag on the TD run before the ball was snapped on the extra point. Doh!

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 2:10 PM | Report abuse

Well, Billick IS a genius. It's all part of his master plan.

I guess we can expect a negative blog entry or article on the Redskins from Jasno soon. Just taking out his bitterness about the Ravens sucking on the Skins.

Posted by: cdubb | September 30, 2007 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Wait, I've been led to believe that the Ravens are perfect. Are you telling me this isn't so?

Ed Hochuli has been working out.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Ball is snapped over Romo's head, it goes about 20 yards behind him, he's in pursuit, after two attempts gets a handle and starts scrambling....runs about 30 yards for the first down! Great thing about the replay is Romo's eyes! They're doelike ("Oh, SJK! SJK! SJK!). Then, after he gets out of bounds, they show the play again and TO is laughing afterward. V. funny.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 2:28 PM | Report abuse

ugh...sounds depressing to me....i think romo is TO's fave QB ever....

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 2:30 PM | Report abuse

Romo opts to pass on first down, incomplete. He could have run it in himself. Middle of the field open. Next play, he does just that. 14-7. at the half. Well, unless they kick it to Hall.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 2:58 PM | Report abuse

4th Floor's team is beating my pants off as the early games come to a close, but only two of my guys have played so far. But... he has R. Moss, A. Gates and N. Kaeding going later, so he will be extending that lead. Go players go!

Nate!
Oh, holy bleep! I said I didn't think Pack-Vikes was over...Lo and behold, Pack fumble, Vikes recover. It's all because Favre was posing for pix (and giving Driver the bunny ears) with his receivers on the sideline.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Carnell "Cadillac" Williams was carted off the field with a right knee injury in the first quarter of Sunday's game against Carolina.
Williams had just broken through the right side for an 18-yard gain when he was hit by safety Chris Harris near the Panthers' sideline. The hit forced Williams backward as his right leg bent under him awkwardly, and Williams immediately clutched the knee as he lay on the ground after the play.
The Panthers said Williams would not return.
Panthers wideout Steve Smith, standing a short distance from Williams, immediately started motioning for medical personnel. The entire Tampa Bay team eventually came off the sideline to join Panthers players around the cart as Williams left the field.

I did take a little stroll down memory lane and examined that 1989 first round...wow, lots of duds there. With the exception of Mandarich, the top 5 is top notch (Aikman, Deion, Barry Sanders, Derrick Thomas). The rest was awful.

Well, the Warner thing appears to be working. A friend who's a Stillers fan called to tell me that Ken Whisenhunt shook the hands of all the Stillers before the game and Roethlisberger shunned him, staying far away.

It does appear to be working. Warner looks pretty good.

Gumbel and Dierdorf were talking earlier about the now chilly relationship between Ben and Ken. There are a lot of subplots to this game. Some nice hits as a result of it, too. Arizona is actually even playing pretty good D.

What is it with Big Ben? You would think he would be a little more gracious after all he went through last year. He won a super bowl with Cowher and Whisenhunt but still acts like a jerkoff that they did nothing for his career. Karma will be losing to AZ today which looks entirely possible.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Philadelphia Eagles halfback Brian Westbrook, offensive tackle William Thomas, cornerback Lito Sheppard and safety Brian Dawkins were all inactive for Sunday night's game against the New York Giants.
Westbrook, who led the NFC in rushing with 291 yards after last week and was the conference's player of the week after gaining a combined 221 rushing and receiving against Detroit, was sidelined with a pulled abdominal muscle. He did not practice this week.
Dawkins was inactive for the second straight week with a neck injury, while Sheppard was out for the second straight week with a knee injury. Thomas sprained a knee last week.
Giants halfback Derrick Ward and receiver Plaxico Burress, who were questionable with ankle injuries, were both in the starting lineup.

Posted by: Cindy | September 30, 2007 7:14 PM | Report abuse

cdubb,

I'd expect Westbrook and Dawkins to play tonight. However, Lito Sheppard looks like he's going to be out another week, which isn't good news for the D.

My prediction is to expect the NYC sports misery to continue tonight. Take the Eagles and give the points.

I find it really disheartening to watch teams like Arizona, Pittsburgh, Dallas. I see how they play, look at their coaches, and think their best years are ahead of them. I think the Redskins' best years are behind us. We have a young defense that could get better, but except for Campbell and Cooley, I think all the offense has played their best and are now just marking time. Ugh.

I'm afraid that I can't really defend Gibbs any longer. Maybe I'm ready to join CL on the Grimm bandwagon.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 30, 2007 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Bye week blues, t-e? Let's see what the story on this season looks like when all is said and done.

Personally, I'm most concerned that three-fifths of the offensive line were not starters at the onset of training camp than I am with the game possibly passing St. Joe by. They couldn't get a running game going at all against the Giants. That's not Joe Gibbs Football (or, more to the point, that's not the kind of football dictated to by the system St. Joe, Saunders, Norv Turner, Tom Moore, Mike Martz, Cam Cameron, et al run).

It's also a long season, and every week any team can win. There are only two dominant teams in the NFL, everyone else is in the second tier battling their guts out and looking for a lucky opportunity or two (a la the 2005 Stillers).

Posted by: P Diddy | September 30, 2007 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Thanks, Diddy, for the pep talk. Gibbs I football used to consistently outscore its opponents. Gibbs II doesn't. So, he realized he'd lost it and brought in the best in the league, Saunders. Then, when the crunch comes, he pushes Saunders aside. It's a very dull offense which plays badly. Even before the injuries, they weren't dominating except against bad teams.

It's also discouraging that in the off week they take a vacation. There's too much they need to work on to take a vacation. I just don't get it, and I am not inspired by what I see. You have to take it on faith, because the evidence isn't there, and I've lost the faith.

CL--

Well, you sold me Grimm a while back (although I recall that it tried your patience), and you'd have to sell me on Gibbs' staying on. Maybe better Gibbs than a vacuum for Vinnie and Mr. Snyder, but I'm concerned that Gibbs is too hands on, too much of a micro-manager. His overriding Saunders, after hiring the guy, doesn't bode well, in my mind.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 30, 2007 9:21 PM | Report abuse

I want one of those too, CL. I was just sitting here watching the game and looking at Plexiglass, standing at least a full head above the 2 Iggles defenders who were attempting to "cover" him, reach up and pick the ball out of the air for a TD. Ridiculous. We need one of them, post haste.

Posted by: JustMe | September 30, 2007 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Gibbs/Grimm share philosophical common ground so i think gibbs would be more apt to let him lead...but who knows...basically i think it allows gibbs a gracefull exit while giving him a legacy in gibbs 2.0

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 30, 2007 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Gibbs courted Grimm to be O-Cord when he first took over....but Steelers would not let him interview or leave...even though they passed him over for their own O-Cord job...

What a contrast to the Pittsburg, Arizona game earlier today. Those two teams seem headed for better things where as the Skins, Eagles and Giants seem trapped in mediocrity.

Anybody see any of the Lions game? Are they gonna pitch it all over the field against us, or were the Bears just pooping all over themselves, or what?

Detroit had 1 kick return td and 1 int return for td. Didn't see the game so not sure how they looked. But if Philly put up 50+ on them we should be able to score at least 30. Lets face it, if the O doesn't break out next week I doubt it will all year.
