Giants 10, Redskins 0 (First Quarter)

From Dan Steinberg
The Redskins' offense did get a first down. Sure, it was by penalty, when punter Durant Brooks got hammered, but it was a first down.

After an enthusiastic pre-game celebration of last year's Super Bowl win, the Giants came out with a nearly perfect opening drive: 11 plays, 84 yards and a 1-yard Eli Manning touchdown run on which he eluded linebacker Rocky McIntosh in the open field. Plaxico Burress caught three passes for 60 yards on the drive, and cornerback Fred Smoot was called for pass interference in the end zone to set up Manning's score.

The Redskins' first possession was as bad as the Giants as good: a sack and two short runs in between a Stephon Heyer false start, followed by a disappointing 34-yard punt from rookie Durant Brooks. The Giants converted their great field position into more points, a 24-yard John Carney field goal that concluded a 9-play, 45-yard drive. That drive's most notable play was a 17-yard Brandon Jacobs run, with Jacobs flattening Redskins safety LaRon Landry.

After a false start on their next possession, the Redskins were saved from a three-and-out only when Jerome McDougle ran into the punter, drawing a personal foul. That bought four more plays for Washington's offense, which produced two runs for four yards, an incomplete pass and another punt.

Total yards 124-7
Total first downs 8-1*
Net yards passing 76 minus-8
Time of possession 9:44 4:41
Third-down efficiency 3-for-4 0-for-3
*By penalty

typical NYG play tonight:

Ball snapped
Eli takes ball, takes three steps back.
Eli whips out NYT and reads front page.
Eli finds crossword and finishes - in pen.
Eli takes a nap.
Eli gets bored, decides that oh well, he may as well pass the ball.
Pass caught for 15 yards.

Quick thought:

We could have created an offense of players who were cut by other teams during the pre-season and had better results than our offense.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Zorn's play calling is AWFUL. That kind of third and short play didn't work at all in the preseason, and he does it again. I don't understand it. It's absolutely ridiculous. I think a bunch of damned idiots are running this team.

Posted by: Colin | September 4, 2008 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Colin | September 4, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

The offensive line can't block and the defensive line can neither rush nor tackle. And the corners can't cover. And the qb can't complete a pass. This is going to be a long season.

I can assure you that JLaC probably feels nothing but pain for having to cover a team that will in all likelihood land in the bottom third of the League. No one wants to be around a team that is so bad that it's locker room is like a mausoleum. You want to be around a team that has a swagger, like the 2005 'Skins with all of Portis's costumes, the playoff run, etc.

Smoot is a friggin' joke. I'm tried of this POS team with a terrible FO that can't put a team together, with coaches that can't make the right calls, with players who don't seem to have any sense of urgency. It's ridiculous. And I know, this is Game 1, but this is exactly what we saw in the last two preseason games, too. The Redskins are simply getting bullied. They have no passion and no intensity. A performance like this does define who you are, no matter how early it is in the season. And this is the Redskins. So get ready for the longest of seasons. At least the Caps and Wizards start next month. Skins aren't worth our time or money.

All those Giants fans don't sound so rowdy now.

OK, I am back on the Skins bandwagon!

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 4, 2008 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Anyone want to use my time machine to go back to when the 'Skins were good?

Yeah, because being up by only 9 agains the DEADskins really scares us.

So if we score a TD, do we go for 2?

Posted by: RITCA | September 4, 2008 8:22 PM

Why would you go for 2?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 4, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Good News, Rock gets the ball to start the 2nd half!

Posted by: P-Rock | September 4, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Good thing Rock didn't get cut. :)

Looks like he's the only one playing with any type of passion.

Posted by: JinxMan | September 4, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

What is even more pathetic than our game is a Giants fan (yes, that would be you Big Blue) spending time posting on a Redskins blog when his team is stomping all over the opponent.

No life, huh?

Posted by: Lisa | September 4, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

There you go, a td.

Posted by: Cindy | September 4, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Watch out for the long pass to Burress.

Posted by: RITCA | September 4, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

So Zorn is no Spurrier?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

2nd qtr analysis:

Slight improvement. We've taken their best shot.

TD at the half is a confidence booster and we get the ball to start the 3rd.

We go down and score and we're back in it.

Posted by: RITCA | September 4, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

So, we get the ball to start the second half. Sweet. Especially if Rock gets it past midfield. Followed by a bogus face mask penalty. Game is still winnable!

Love to hear Zorn's first half-time speech.

For a while there, I thought my tequila was sour. It tasted pretty good on that last shot!

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 4, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

Earlier somebody was jumping over 4th saying that Sleepy would be out. He was right. Apologies are due.

I've been "shotting" since 7:15 PM EST. I guess all of the "new" bloggers are only here for tonight and any other game day. I would love to see them post M-F, you know, during work hours like the rest of us...

Carlos got juked on a double-move by the peanut vendor at half time.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 4, 2008 8:31 PM

Not as stinky as a "fan" who leaves at halftime.

Jim Zorn halftime speech:

"We're ok.
We're in this".

Turns to Bugel and says,
"Do you think anyone believed me."

Bugel:
"Not a one.
They all know we are gonna get killed."

JC looks like he is still thinking too much.

JUST THROW THE BALL

Going to be a looooooooooong season. Even the defense looks bad... which is somewhat surprising.

Posted by: JinxMan | September 4, 2008 8:14 PM

If you have not been paying attention sure

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 8:16 PM

I know this may sound like I'm not a true Skins fan, but parenting comes before the Skins. On top of cooking dinner and helping with homework, I've only been able to catch bits and pieces of the game, but I can hear the announcers giving the Skins grief for their play.

Posted by: JinxMan | September 4, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

I can't wait to here from the "it's way too early" crowd

Red,
Cheers! No Hard feelings! Here's to the Budweiser flu (tomorrow)!

Posted by: dlhaze | September 4, 2008 8:37 PM | Report abuse

I'm not trying to be deliberately negative, but the events of the last two minutes of the first half give me no confidence -- none -- that things will improve in the second half. I hope I'm wrong, but I saw a long return and a phantom face mask along with two completions by JC. Not exactly a reliable formula for success.

Guess you're not noticing that dude, dos seis, huh? Line is playing like two weeks ago, homie.

And Campbell is still an anvil in the pocket.

Put me in! Even I can do better than that joker who is ready to take his next step.

Posted by: Helen Keller | September 4, 2008 8:38 PM | Report abuse

I think I might call a few screen passes in the second half. You guys ok with that? Vinny...??? Dan...? Anyone...?

Posted by: Jim Zorn | September 4, 2008 8:39 PM | Report abuse

So Zorn is no Spurrier?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 8:28 PM

As someone posted earlier, at least Spurrier's teams could score on occassion.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 8:39 PM | Report abuse

JZ told Andrea Kramer that Campbell needs to read the defense, not just focus on one guy. I can't fathom J. Gibbs saying that to a reporter.

Posted by: Not Anonymous | September 4, 2008 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Cindy McCain on c-span during halftime. She looks about 35, but i know she's 20 years older at least. Great looking high-mileage unit.

Cindy McCain is hot!
