Giants 16, Redskins 7 After Three

From Dan Steinberg

Any hope that the Redskins' offense would carry over the momentum from its second-quarter touchdown dissipated after a Santana Moss catch on third down came up inches short of a first down. But the Redskins' defense got its first stop of the game on the ensuing series, when three incompletions forced Jeff Feagles' first punt.

Clinton Portis' longest run of the night, 23 yards, gave Washington a burst of hope. But another modest third-down completion, this one to rookie Devin Thomas, came up just short of the marker. Then came something new -- the game's first turnover, a Fred Smoot interception -- followed immediately by something familiar: three Redskins plays, a third-down completion that came up short, and a punt.

Matters only got worse on the Giants' next possession. Following his interception, Eli Manning completed four straight passes. The Giants gained three first downs, and Smoot had to be helped off the field after remaining on the ground for several moments with what the team is calling a hip pointer. The quarter ended without a point being scored, and with the Giants still in control.

Should have gotten Portis going early

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Madden just echoed my thoughts from earlier...

LaRon Landry will be a f'n beast in this league.

Now that Madden said it everyone else (nationally and non-skins fans) will believe it now.

Good change in the snap count

Posted by: MJ | September 4, 2008 9:24 PM | Report abuse

Wow,
Just about 1,200 yds and Portis becomes the all time leading rusher. I didn't know he was that close.

By Cindy Boren | September 4, 2008; 9:09 PM ET

The quarter ended with the Giants unable to put the 'Skins away and have now sputtered to a halt. Skins haven't done much but are still in it after three quarters.

This reminds me of the first game last year where the 'Skins couldn't put the Giants away and they came back and won it. Now, all we have to do is come back and win it.

Posted by: dlhaze | September 4, 2008 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Wild Idea: RUN ROUTES THAT ARE LONG ENOUGH TO GET A FIRST DOWN AND THEN THROW IT TO THAT GUY.

This is like the 4th time THIS HALF that they've come up short on a completed 3rd down pass.

Posted by: d | September 4, 2008 9:28 PM | Report abuse

I'm sorry; did they pass a new rule in the NFL that says you can't throw for the sticks on 3rd down? You must pass for 3 yards on 3rd and 7?

Humble request: during this tv timeout or the next one, take a look our new Redskins home page: www.washingtonpost.com/redskins. What do you think? Input appreciated.

I said our WRs suck because of this. Should I be blaming JC?

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 4, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse

first y'all complained that they weren't completing passes. Now you're complaining that they passes aren't long enough. After they get that down, you'll probably complain that they didn't get a TD on the pass.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse

So does Jim Zorn's version of the West Coast Offense require the QB to throw short of the sticks on 3rd down every time? Or is the problem that your QB just stinks?

Posted by: BIG BLUE | September 4, 2008 9:29 PM | Report abuse

It seems like whoever designed this offense didn't take into consideration the need for protection so the QB has time to throw.

Not saying this just based on this game- but Jason Campbell will NEVER be a good QB in this league. Just not smart enough. They need to scale back the play book considerably for him to be effective at all. Put Collins in and start him the next year or so, and start getting Colt ready.

First downs: 20 to 6...what else do you need to know? Campbell is a nice guy but it seems as though the added receivers have not upgraded an offense lacking in line quality and QB performance. I fear the Skins may go 7-9 with no real threat of an upward trend in the next few years. Oh well...at least we had the 80s. Them glory fumes is all we is getting for now. Bring back Spurrier.

Posted by: LH | September 4, 2008 9:39 PM | Report abuse

they're running the football from their 20 yard line with 5 minutes to go down two scores because they don't have a QB under center.

ABSOLUTELY mismanaged at the end of this quarter. I don't know how you can continue to huddle when you're down two scores with four minutes left in the game. I also don't know how you can call runs this late. And, I'm not sure why you would throw these piddly dump offs, either. All in all, pretty awful.

The Redskins are officially the stupidest team in football, from Snyder's allegiance to that clown Cerrato to Zorn's complete lack of urgency at the end of the game. Stupidest team in the NFL. No joke.

Posted by: Rufus T. | September 4, 2008 9:51 PM | Report abuse

From Jason La Canfora:

The Redskins suffered a freakish injury after the opening coin toss. Linebacker Khary Campbell, a special teams captain, was on the field for the toss, and ended up with a quad injury. Campbell had been suffering from a thigh injury, returning to practice early in the week, but the team said during the game that this injury was unrelated. Campbell did not participate in the game, and with linebacker Albert Fincher inactive the team had just four linebackers available. One of them, Rocky McIntosh, is coming off of season-ending knee surgery, and another Marcus Washington, battled hip discomfort during the end of training camp (he has a history of hip injuries) leaving the team in less than ideal circumstances.

Talk about playing scared. The play calling tonight made Gibbs look like a dare devil in comparison. I have been a JC supporter since he was drafted, but tonight is a wake up call, he did not even resemble an NFL starting QB tonight.

I don't think it was JC. It was a team effort. Lousy blocking, bad route running, dropped passes, and throwing to the wrong man. To me, it looks like a team learning a new offense and playing against a mighty strong defense. Skins aren't going to face many defenses as good as this one, and they'll get better.

If it took Hasselbeck two years to learn this offense, why do you think that Jason could learn it in one game?

This is the most pathetic coaching in football I have ever witnessed. Dan Snyder is a complete idiot. Who the hell hires a quaterback coach and promotes him to head coach. I am a life long Redskins fan but this is just rediculous. And what the hell is with all the 3 down passes 2 or 3 yards short of the first down marker. Look at the giants. All their 3rd down attempts were beyond the markers. Not the Redskins. And clock management. Unbelievable. Zorn wasnt even calling the plays in till 15 seconds already ran off the clock. Oh, and let's run the ball with 5 minutes left down by two scores. And make sure we take our time while we are at it. This is the First time I can remember that I actually think the Redskins haven't got a chance in hell to go anywhere. THink I am going to have to cancel my DTV Football Package.

I am a lifetime Skins fan (season tickets since 1962 and an uncle in the marching band) and I will hang in there all season but this was not the Skin's I root for. The Redskins do not have a tradition of caution, safe plays and soft coverage. The Skin's need to rediscover their aggression.

I hate to say it but right now Jason Campbell is the worst starting QB in the league. He has no confidence, makes bad decisions, and has made no progess at all since his rookie year. Sadly, I think he is another Kyle Boller and a back-up QB at best. I feel bad for Collins who everyone knows is the better player and had the offense playing well last year.

On another note, what a total waste the Jason Taylor trade looks like now. He will play a year for a last place team and retire. Go figure, Bill Parcells gets the better of a trade vs. Cerrato and Snyder.

Hopefully the Skins can turn it around but it looks like another tough year for loyal Skins fans.

Running up the middle on first and second down doesn't help matters. Neither does cutting your most productive receiver during preseason (and taller than any of the current starters, to boot). The Redskins couldn't have won this in any way, shape, or form given the apparent lack of confidence of the coach in his quarterback and the lack of recognition of real talent and ability at the WR spot, which has been a miserable sore spot for many years.
