Giants dominate Redskins in first quarter

The Redskins won the coin toss but chose to defer - a decision that would not pay off. The Redskins would run just three offensive plays in the quarter as the Giants put together two extended, clock-eating drives.

The Giants took over on their own 20-yard line to start the game and promptly moved downfield on a 16-play, 80-yard drive that ate up 9 minutes and 13 seconds and was capped by running back Ahmad Bradshaw's three-yard touchdown run.

The drive used a nice complement of outside runs and quick dump-offs, with Eli Manning finding his tight ends for gains of nine and 13 to open the drive and short passes to Bradshaw leading to key gains of 12 and seven yards on third downs that kept New York moving until Bradshaw eventually found his way into the end zone to give the Giants a 7-0 lead with 5:47 remaining in the quarter.

The Redskins took over on their own 33-yard line but only went backwards, with Jason Campbell getting hit twice on both pass attempts, fumbling on third down for a loss of nine that forced a punt.

The Giants took over on their 37-yard line with 4 minutes, 21 seconds remaining in the quarter and again picked their way down field, using the remaining minutes in the first quarter to drive down to Washington's four-yard line.

The drive again featured a big play on third down - a 12-yard pass to Steve Smith - as well as a 21-yard completion to Hakeem Nicks that had a badly missed tackle from safety LaRon Landry. Some power running from Brandon Jacobs and another underneath pass to a tight end set up Bradshaw's five-yard run that set up first and goal as the quarter expired.

Third and ten to go and we complete a pass behind the line of scrimmage??

This is putrid.

JC is really hesistating on his throws. WTF was that crap to Moss? Just because the Giants can run those plays doesn't mean the craptastic Skins can. Good Grief

I'm guessing Bruce Allen is going to want a raise

This offense looks like Zorn is back to the play calling, JC has had time but there are no deep routes being run.

WTF! 24% of the skins passes are thrown behind the line of scrimage.. that right there is enough to fire the play caller!...SMDH

Still on the brighter side, Ganther is still averaging 5.5 yards a carry.

Bruce Allen just re-negotiated his contract from 3 years to 7. It'll take that long to put together a decent team.

Talk about giving up.

The one silver lining is that this performance should finally shut door on the claim that this is a "good football team". And the other silver lining is that this performance should disabuse of the notion that the team doesn't need significant changes. Whatever carried the team against DEN, DAL, PHL (the second time), NO, and OAK is faltering here.

It could be that, given the change in the front office, the team might just see themselves as lame ducks. I don't know.

You're wrong SkinsneedaGM.. (btw, you need to change you handle)
Gints are going to lay back on him and get 4 turnovers (Interceptions and Fumbles)..not 3 before the game is over...
Nothing to lose now at 24-0 why not put Collins in who beat the Gints in the Meadowlands 2 years ago?
CAmpbell is showing what he really is... a decent backup.
He did well against a beat up New Orleans secondary (2/3rds on disabled list)..and a terrible Oakland secondary.
He is not a QB that can rally a team.. HE HAS NEVER BROUGHT THE SKINS FROM BEHIND...CHECK HIS STATS.

now it will be interesting to see if JC panics, like he has in the past, and forgets his mechanics (progressions and check downs). When he is behind...he passes short for worthless yards or overthrows. The Giants, with a 2 score lead, are going to sit back and watch him read once to his primary and throw.... I would bet one pick or fumble (INT) before halftime. And two more in the second half, if the Skins stay behind by more than two TDs.

Flounder21,

You must see a lot of what Dan Snyder sees, "JC has had time..." You should switch channels, you're not watching the Giants vs. Redskins.

Posted by: tony11 | December 21, 2009 9:59 PM | Report abuse

How else to do this than MNF?? Awesome!!

For once, I wouldn't blame Snyder if he pulled the trigger on the head coach after less than 2 seasons.

Zorn is completely incompetent. You can NOT tell me he isnt involved in these F$%#ED up play calls.

I hope he's fired on Christmas Eve.

Exactly. As my brother just said, that was the Indians manager giving the "Up Yours" sign to the owner in "Major League" He is likely to be chugging whiskey in the locker room at halftime.

Odds that Zorn is fired at halftime: Even

A complete and utter collapse. How can you simply give up like this? This is the worst half of football I have ever seen, that includes High School and College. Zorn looks so lost. I am so embarrased to be Redskins fan right now.

What a fake FG! 4 Giants rushed the "passer" unblocked and the path was thrown into a sea of other Giants. Wonder how long the Skins have been working on that play? Bruce Allen just made his first official move as GM: firing the Zorn and the special teams coach...

Posted by: randysbailin | December 21, 2009 10:09 PM | Report abuse

That first half was just horrible execution by both the OL and DL. They were owned in the trenches.

Posted by: cannontl | December 21, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

No doubt the Giants are howling w/ laughter in the locker room after that FG fake. The Giants called a timeout when they saw the formation. Not to be dissuaded, the Skins lined up in the idiotic formation anyway.

Posted by: randysbailin | December 21, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Zorn calls the plays in the last 2 minutes of each half.. Soooooo, I agree with everyone here..... its an FU to the owners box and the new GM...

AND. think about it.. Zorn knows he has a job now reuniting with Holmgren in Cleveland (Holmgren said Zorn was being treated poorly in DC).. So Zorn has nothing to lose but to have fun screwing with the Skins...

PLEASE FIRE ME...is what he is saying.. its worth alot more money to him than if he coaches out the remaining season.

Posted by: cliftonbiz | December 21, 2009 10:13 PM | Report abuse

Now that I hear that the Cowboys have signed Suisham I see him kicking the game winner against the Skins next week. Then again after watching this game they might not even need him.

Posted by: ExPatYankee | December 21, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Guys, don't you see? Zorn has been setting this up for the longest time. He said, "You embarrass me, I embarrass you on national TV."

And he has. He knows he is gone and is getting in his last laugh on Dan Snyder--AND HE TAKES HIS MILLIONS WITH HIM.

Monday night was the time to do, Holmgren already promised him a job, and now he is saying Hail, up yours Snyder.

They might as well shut Campbell down for the night/season, too.

Posted by: Invisman52 | December 21, 2009 10:14 PM | Report abuse

I love the skins, but the truth is you reap what you sow. Zorn may be an awful coach, but the treatment by the owner has been satanic at best. You simply don't treat people like he has been treated. even the fat, greasy haired, buger eater in the corner deserves more dignity than Snyder et. al have shown Zorn. Fine, he is going to be fired....but do you really have to leak all the discussions with Shanny into the press with three games left in the season. That wasn't the press's doing....it was pure Snyder PR whisperings.

Riggins was right, Snyder is a low life puny little punk who took many, many , many beatings as a child. I am willing to bet he was a cutter.....too bad he missed an artery, because unfortunately we are stuck his cold, dark, shadowless, evil for the next 2 million years!

What else is required to make this an utter fiasco?

Next up, ball falls from QB's hand in own end zone as his hand begins moving forward, resulting in Giants TD.

Prediction: This is Zorn's last game....

Posted by: randysbailin | December 21, 2009 10:47 PM | Report abuse

There is actually one positive in this shameful display. This will keep the Giants in striking distance with the Cowboys. If the Giants win out and the Cowboys lose one game in the next 2 weeks the Giants hold the sweep tiebreaker.
