Giants quickly put an end to Redskins' hopes

The Redskins started the second half with a momentum-gaining touchdown drive but saw any positives quickly disintegrate when the Giants scored twice in a 14-second span to turn the game into a blowout.

After a first half in which they had barely managed to move the ball at all - at one point trailing the Giants 24-0 with zero first downs and minus-two yards of offense - the Redskins came out behind quarterback Jason Campbell and immediately put points on the board.

Campbell had been questionable to return with a sprained shoulder and had been hit all day but came out in the second half and found Fred Davis for 11 yards on his first pass attempt. On third and 2, Campbell then found Rock Cartwright, who sprinted 51 yards to the Giants 16-yard line.

On third and 10 Campbell sought Davis again and drew a defensive holding penalty and an automatic first down, and on the next play Campbell again found his new favorite target for an 11-yard touchdown. That pulled the Redskins within 24-6 as the extra point was blocked.

Any momentum Washington was building was quieted almost immediately, as it took just 4 minutes and 9 seconds for the Giants to answer.

A seven play, 77-yard touchdown drive highlighted by Eli Manning's 35-yard pass to Kevin Boss and 23-yard touchdown pass to Derek Hagan extended the Giants lead to 31-6.

It didn't stay that way for long. On the Redskins first play of the next drive, Campbell badly overthrew Davis on a screen and was intercepted by Terrell Thomas, who easily returned the pick 14 yards for a touchdown to make it 38-6 New York with 6:07 remaining in the third quarter.

The play sent most Redskins fans heading for the exits, but the Washington offense came back out on the field and was able to put together a decent scoring drive.

Campbell found Santana Moss and Davis on back-to-back passes to move the ball to the 42-yard line, and on third and 1 running back Marcus Mason rushed for a 20-yard gain. Campbell then hit Davis for 11 yards and found Mason for a 17-yard gain one play later to move the ball to the one-yard line. Quinton Ganther took it in on the left side to make it 38-12, but was stopped on the two-point conversion try and the Redskins went into the final quarter trailing by 26.

Should never have fired Vinny. Yes that is a joke people...

Posted by: scoot21 | December 21, 2009 11:12 PM | Report abuse

yeah..Campbell has thrown for 3000 yards, of which 80 percent are 10 yards or less. Thats called safe, stat padding short passes.
Its also why JC is 211th of 214 NFL QBs in the history of the NFL with 900 or more pass attempts, in Red zone TD percentage.

Collins threw a 47 yard pass completion to Moss in only his second pass with the SAME OLINE!!!
+++++++++++++++++++++++++

people can say all they want about Campbell and his lack of playmaking ability. The fact that he's put up 3000 yards with Mike Williams, Levi Jones, Will Montgomery, Stephon Heyer, and D'anthony Batiste as starters on his offensive line speaks a lot to his ability, in my opinion. I'd like to see how well he can play with a NFL caliber o-line.

What's the owners job then? To undermine his team as he has been all year (some of it thru Viny).

Posted by: cannontl | December 21

Not sure this is all on the owner or if this is 90% vinny being left in charge and royally taking a flathead to the poodle. . .

I'm just saying that the owner doesn't have the incentive to screw up this bad, Vinny on the other hand showed all he cared about was keeping his position not building a winner. . .owner's 100% responsible for putting him there. . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2009 11:14 PM | Report abuse

Landry CANNOT COVER DEEP! I'll bet that 90% of the pass plays over 20 yards go to his side.

OK one more thing:
Fire Blache.
Allen - get an O-line. NO ONE should be crushed by a linebacker on a 3-step drop...

That would be a good start. Baby steps. This mess will not be fixed in one off-season.
And keep JC - what heart !!!! I must say I would not have gone back in there if I was him. He is a top-15 QB - we have so many other more pressing problems. The D talent is totally wasted with this coaching staff. Wow, the ineptness is stunning.

ummm hate to say it but, the JC 3 turnover prediction "comes true".
Collins moves the team.. 3 pass attempts.. hits Moss for 47 yards and Davis dropped a TD. Yet, they put JC and his inability to make a completion over 10 yards, back in the game after the half???

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | December 21, 2009 11:20 PM | Report abuse

classless. . .not a good idea to act this way in a game against a division rival. . .the eagles learned, hoping that the future allows redskins to have an opportunity to do it once again. . . clearly not tonight

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | December 21, 2009 11:20 PM | Report abuse

Most disgusting loss ever? Whoa already with the hyperbole.

This sucks, sure, but it's not even the most disgusting loss this season... Detroit and Kansas City were worse losses than this one. Those teams are even worse than the Skins, and those losses came back when we still had a chance to do something this year.

At least this helps the Giants potentially steal that sixth and final playoff spot from the Cowboys. That's the only solace we can take in this misery.

Boo.

I have said it before and I will say it again, the Giants are the team to beat. Forget the Cowgirls and the Eagles, both of whom we have been able to beat half of the times, but this decade alone, the Giants have given us 2 of our worst lost in the division. Look it up. 35-0 in 2005 and tonight 45-12.
A team such as the Giants with a great and aggressive D should have been more of a reason why the O line should have been addressed with these Skins. I hope the new GM Allen takes notice of this butt whooping we just got, and will use these very same Giants as the measuring stick on how the team has improved in the future.
These Giants are well coached, well managed, and well QB'd. We haven't had either in the last few years and it shows.
A FITTING ENDING TO THE VINNY / ZORN / AND JC era.
For those of you JC lovers, Eli is as much an average QB just as JC and yet he gets the job done.

I think Snyder wants to be successful, but the way he does things leads to being unsuccessful. He has no patience for one and he has not class in relating to others for another.

He should not be running a football organization because he has shown he is not good at it. He should let a bona fide GM make all or most of the football decisions for him. Whether Allen will be that GM remains to be seen.

I'm out of here.

Why undermine the player's value and thus undermine your own (the losing team) compensation amount? The more Jason is paid by his new team (a higher perceived value) the better the compensation to the Skins (ie. 2.5 mil or more, 1st round pick and 3rd round pick).
Bruce is playing the game.. If the gaining team thinks the Skins dont want JC, they will offer him a lesser contract amount..and Skins get less compensation.

If I am not mistaken, I seem to remember Eli having the very same problem as JC when he first got in this league. He could not throw the short passes to save his life.
So perhaps Eli with a better O line and having worked on his short passing accuracy is a better than average QB now in this league, but you no one smart enough would say he is as good as his brother Peyton and a Tom Brady.
JC is an average QB who will not win you games nor lose you games base on his performance. Based on that fact alone, if he goes somewhere else next season, I don't think anyone in town will miss him badly. I seriously doubt also he will turn into Tom Brady by going somewhere else.
True, the team has more pressing need at other positions than at QB, and especially at the O line, WR, Linebacker and at Safety, and JC staying would not necessarily be a bad thing for the short term. But JC IS NOT THE LONG TERM ANSWER at the position either. The guy is a very good backup QB to have.

But I guess we could just use a top ten pick on a QB... That should work out. Or better yet, let's bring in TC... He's the answer!

Brady went in what, the 5th or 6th round?

Favre was not a top 10 pick. nor was Steve Young, nor was Flacco.

you are thinking like Danny with this top 10 pick noise.

if you have a good talent guy, the winners can be found in the lower rounds. funny how many Super Bowl winning teams used that formula.

that's *winner,* the opposite of what we have now at QB, which is a LOSER. but he played hard when he lost (again).

calling Bruce, please get us some winners to replace these losers.

I'm just glad that Allen saw first hand, what was out there. I hope he's looking at all the bowl games this year to scout, I hope he saw what a disgrace of a line and coach we have. You kick the field at the end of the half and score a TD to start the second and we're down 14. On national TV, we looked ridiculous.

The trashing of the Redskins tonight by the G-men in front of millions of football fans around the USA is very emberassing indeed! This kind of performance coming from the team can be blame directly to the head coach. They were talking about preparing for this game but apparently the coaches forgot one thing: how to play against a well prepared and motivated team.

BUILD OLINE AND KEEP CAMPBELL... WE NEED A NEW DEFENSIVE PHILOSOPHY, ALONG WITH A FEW NEW PERSONEL, BUT THE DEFENSIVE PROB WAS PURELY PASSION. OLINE NEEDS REHUALING...

I have been a Skins' fan for over a decade. Now living on the West Coast, I don't get to watch the home team much. Finally there is a nationally broadcast game, and this is what I got. Well, at least the humiliation is very entertaining in itself. That is the best take from the game. Synder, what a clown. What a joke. What a little fool.

Keep Campbell? Really? The game is too fast for him. Didn't see him calling an audible the whole game. I don't think he knows how to react.

All these sorry fans are whooping it up now cuz VC is gone and the next 'savior', Allen is here. I remember when Gibbs came back; you'd think they won teh Super Bowl. All these obnoxious fans and media talking blahblahblah. And Gibbs sucked too!
Snyder is a piece of scum and rips off the stupidest fans in all of sports and they keep blabbering. Snyder and Skins fans deserve each other. BOTH SUCK. The NYG KICKED-YOUR-ASSES tonight on MNF. What a freaking JOKE. Skins, Snyder, and fans: Y-O-U S-U-C-K.
