Redskins crushed, 31-7, by Giants

By Barry Svrluga and Rick Maese

Updated: 4:15 p.m.
Fourth Quarter:

Washington fell 31-7 to the New York Giants Sunday at New Meadowlands Stadium, virtually ensuring that the 5-7 Redskins will miss the playoffs for a third straight season and for the ninth time in the past 11. The loss will go down as one of the team's least-impressive performances of the season: they couldn't stop the Giants running game, turned the ball over six times and failed to mount any semblance of offensive momentum.

Even the Redskins' special teams' play was suspect: they missed a first-half field
goal and the Giants managed to block a punt in the fourth quarter, setting up the game's final score.

Any hope the Redskins had of coming back was quickly doused in the opening moments of the fourth quarter. The Redskins reached the Giants' 22-yard line, but on the second play of the quarter, McNabb targeted Santana Moss in the end zone on first down. Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas intercepted the ball, killing the Redskins' best scoring opportunity of the quarter.

Later, at the 10:57 mark, McNabb faced third-and-15 from the Washington 17-yard line. Justin Tuck zipped around Jammal Brown on the right side and sacked McNabb, jarring the ball loose.
The Redskins recovered but were forced to punt.

On the punt, though, former Washington wide receiver Devin Thomas burst through for New York and got a hand on Hunter Smith's punt for a partial block. The Giants recovered the ball at the Redskins' 13-yard line, and four players later, Lawrence Tynes kicked in a 28-yard field
to give New York a 31-7 lead.

On the ensuing possession, McNabb completed a one-yard shovel pass to Keiland
Williams. Tuck knocked the ball loose and the Giants recovered. Turnover No. 5 came when the Redskins got the ball back. TIght end Chris Cooley was stripped of the ball by Giants safety Deon Grant. McNabb threw an interception to cornerback Corey Webster on the Redskins' final offensive play.

On the day, the Giants ran for 197 yards. By comparison, the Redskins managed only 54 rushing yards.

The Redskins were led by receiver Anthony Armstrong, who had 97 yards and a touchdown. James Davis was the leading rusher with 40 yards on nine carries. The Redskins' starting running back, Keiland Williams, had 29 yards on five carries.

McNabb finished the day 26 of 44 passing for 296 yards. He had one
touchdown, two interceptions and a passer rating of 68.0.

The Giants were led by Brandon Jacobs, who had 103 yards and Ahmad Bradshaw, who added 97. Each running back had two touchdowns. Eli Manning went 15 of 25 passing for 161 yards and a quarterback rating of 62.2.

Third Quarter:

The best the Redskins could say about the third quarter: They stopped the bleeding, at least for a bit. But they had very little to show for it.

After being outgained by more than 100 yards in the first half, the Redskins' first offensive series gained seven yards - and they gained a first down only because of a Giants' holding penalty. Their second possession included a dropped pass by fullback Mike Sellers and a sack of Donovan McNabb by Giants end Osi Umenyiora, who simply ran by tackle Stephon Heyer. Their third possession ended when McNabb, who appeared to have all day to complete a pass, decided to run - and fumbled the ball away.

The Redskins stopped the Giants on their first two possessions of the quarter, but that was short-lived. New York's third drive - the one that started after McNabb's fumble - ended in Brandon Jacobs's 28-yard touchdown run, the Giants' fourth rushing touchdown of the game. On the play, Jacobs broke a tackle by Washington safety Reed Doughty, then danced untouched into the end zone to put New York up 28-0.

Down by four touchdowns, the Redskins showed something that amounted to life on their next drive. The possession began with a 28-yard screen pass from McNabb to running back James Davis and ended with a 33-yard scoring pass from McNabb to Anthony Armstrong. But the Redskins' first touchdown of the day only cut the lead to 28-7. When the quarter ended, the Redskins had the ball - but on third and 2, were called for a false start penalty.

Second Quarter:

Using a strong running game, the Giants powered their way to a 21-0 halftime lead. With two minutes remaining in the half, Ahmad Bradshaw blasted forward for 10 yards, plowing through Washington safety KareemMoore to reach the end zone.

Through the first two quarters, the Giants had already amassed 140 rushing yards -- a figure the Redskins' running backs have reached just once all season. Brandon Jacobs led New York with 74 yards and Bradshaw had chipped in 66.

Meanwhile, the Redskins failed to reach the red zone in the first half, managing 135 yards of offense and eight first downs in the opening two quarters.

The Giants were threatening to put the game away midway through the second quarter, as quarterback Eli Manning led his offense 75 yards to the Washington four-yard line. But on first-and-goal, Manning's pass landed in the eager arms of Redskins linebacker London Fletcher in the end zone. It marked the Giants' league-leading 31st turnover this season and Fletcher's first
interception of the year.

While momentum appeared to shift briefly to the Redskins, it didn't last long. Four plays later, Donovan McNabb connected with receiver Anthony Armstrong on an 11-yard pass. But cornerback Terrell Thomas forced a fumble and the Giants recovered on the Washington 39-yard
line.

The Giants needed just five plays before Bradshaw steamrolled his way to New York's third touchdown of the day.

The Redskins continued to shuffle their lineup. At left tackle, Trent Williams and Stephon Heyer alternated drives. Though he started the game on the bench, James Davis saw the bulk of the time in the backfield. And second-year cornerback Kevin Barnes took took over for Phillip Buchanon early in the second quarter.

First Quarter

The game couldn't have gotten off to a worse start for the Redskins. On the Giants' second play from scrimmage, Brandon Jacobs gained 39 yards on a simple run off left tackle, a play on which Redskins free safety Kareem Moore missed a tackle. That was the biggest play in what became a seven-play, 59-yard drive for the Giants, which Jacobs finished off with an easy 8-yard run for a touchdown, and New York was up 7-0 less than four minutes into the game.

On the Redskins' first possession, right tackle Jammal Brown was called for a personal foul when he grabbed the facemask of Giants defensive end Justin Tuck, and the Redskins continued to go backward when Tuck and fellow end Jason Pierre-Paul sacked McNabb on third down, an11-yard loss that forced a punt.

The Giants' second possession was nearly as easy as the first. Quarterback Eli Manning opened it with a 21-yard pass to tight end Kevin Boss, but the Giants' running game did most of the rest of the damage. Ahmad Bradshaw finished it off with a four-yard touchdown run on third and 2, and less than 10 minutes into the game, New York had its second seven-play, 59-yard drive - and a 14-0 lead.

The Redskins looked as if they might score on their next possession. McNabb hit receiver Anthony Armstrong with a 22-yard pass, and a subsequent tripping penalty on the Giants moved the ball to the New York 30. From there, though, the offense - with James Davis as the running back -- sputtered. McNabb missed Roydell Williams on third and 4, and Graham Gano missed a 43-yard field goal attempt. As the quarter ended, the Redskins had stopped the Giants on third-and-1, but they remained down by two touchdowns.

This is the Washington Post. They're all over the Brett Favre story. Because they saw it on TV.

This team really is awful in all phases of the game.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | December 5, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Redskins can only win with turnovers. They need a short field.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | December 5, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

The last thing the Redskins need is Brandon Jacobs getting into a rhythm.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | December 5, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Twitter says Williams shoulder is still hurting from his incident at home last week. Glad someone knows something. Didn't even hear anything on TV.

Jacobs running over the D and Hagans running thru Buchanon.

Giants will get 400 yards easy today.

Posted by: NosferatusCoffin | December 5, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Too true, scamp.

And poor Doughty just is not a starting-caliber safety.

Cut Buchanan at half-time.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | December 5, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

McNabb needs to start moving around in the pocket more. Step up, start scrambling... whatever. He's just standing there and this line can't give him time.

Are they gonna call any holding calls on the giants today?

And has 52 made an actual tackle in the past 3 weeks?

Posted by: jumbo5383 | December 5, 2010 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Defense did not show up at all.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | December 5, 2010 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Well, McNabb was stepping up and was going to run for the first down on the 3rd and 2, but had his legs caught, otherwise he had the first down.

They have been able to run, but now they will be down 21-0 and that will be out the window.

You're a mildly retarded monkey frak

Anthony Armstrong fails to finish a play again. He makes great catches sometimes, but he then messes up somehow.

Think back to the Eagles game in Week 4 on the deep pass he caught.

1 step forward. 10 steps back.

This team can never get out of it's own way. That is why you hold your breath on every play, because you are always waiting for the next mistake to happen.

You do not feel that way when watching the Pats, Colts or Steelers, but with the Skins, every play

I blame this coaching staff for the shamefull display, Shannahan lost this team before the bye week when he benched McNabb against Detroit and it has been downhill ever since and don't tell me about the game against the Titans because Tennesse gave that game away.

Sunday afternoon..... And the predictable Redskins slaughter is underway. This is a pathetic, broken football team... They obviously have the wrong scheme for defensive personnel... A monkey can see it. They have little ground game. They tackle poorly. They drive nobody off the ball. They drop passes. They make crucial penalties at just the wrong time. I'd be into it if this were a young, up and coming team, but alas they are the league's oldest.... And with only two draft picks to make a difference? The word isn't dysfunctional, it's - catastrophe.

Lots of injuries, no depth (because few picks over the years), playing good team on the road at their place, second half of the year....

That equals blowout. No matter what coaching staff you have.

I'm sticking with the team even if my eyes are covered with my hands most of the game.

Hopefully this year finally ends the debate: you have to build through the draft, develop a core of young players and add depth, then you build around that nucleus.

No, that doesn't guarantee success (the Saints had lots of picks but stunk; but they stuck with it and are now a playoff contender - year Brees helps) but the other method, over time, simply doesn't work. It might for a year or two but not for a lengthy period.

I really don't know how to describe that pathetic offense.

Posted by: kingpenn1 | December 5, 2010 2:26 PM

I'd describe it as four of five starters short of where they need to be personnel-wise. Not very poetic, is it?

Posted by: beep-beep | December 5, 2010 2:29 PM | Report abuse

Haslett will be here, and with better personnel. We will continue to run the 3-4. That is what Shanahan came here to do.

Posted by: beep-beep | December 5, 2010 2:25 PM

Zorn was brought here to coach up JCampbell. Now both are gone. Let's see how much patience Snyder has with Shanahan and Haslett if the team is struggling again next season (which seems likely).

Not much difference between fair-weather fans and holier-than-thou fans, both are just stating their opinions of the obvious. Either way, it is safe to say that the Redskins are just not very good this year and have a lot of needs.

Despite the fact that the offense hasn't had the ball a lot, they don't seem to have tried any sort of wrinkles at all. What would be the harm in something weird or creative? A flea flicker? Just one.

The skins play a more opponent friendly, gentler, kinder passive 3-4.

They don't press receivers.

They don't tackle well.

The linemen don't shed blocks.

The defensive tackles are easily manhandled.

The safety play is poor.

There is no linebacker opposite Orakpo.

It's not the scheme, it's coaches/players not adhering to the fundamentals of defensive football.

This is what you get when you only draft THREE Offensive lineman in 10 years.

This is what you get when you give a 4th round pick for T.J. Duckett.

This is what you get when you use your first 3 picks of the 2008 draft on receivers.

This is what you get when 48 million dollars of your cap is spent on Albert Haynesworth

This is what you get when you overcommitt to a running back (Clinton Portis).

New headcoach, new OC & DC, new QB, new systems on both sides of the ball will result in one extra win.

Yes, but by the second half of the season you'd hope things would be looking a bit up.

Not down like this. There's almost nothing to see that they have to build upon. A few pieces but really nothing significant.

They simply have no solid core group of players that, 3-5 years from now, we can see starring in this league. A few - a Trent Williams, a Orakpo but who else?

Really, Wiliams+Orakpo+Cooley+who?

All across the league, you read about teams with gobs of injuries and the second and third stringers that step in and do well subbing for the fallen starters.
The Redskins have their share of starters out also.
But the constant with all levels of the Skins roster is their inability to perform the most basic tasks - blocking, tackling, passing, catching.
It's like watching a high school team every week. These guys are pros?

Zorn might not be such a bad word after all in the nation's capital.

Snyder didn't listen to Gibbs - "Don't change things up so much". It takes 4-5 years at least to build a solid team.

The next question is, when will Snyder fire Shanahan? Maybe will tire of his toy football team being broken and sell the team.

The skins are the modern day Detroit lions

Posted by: kingpenn1 | December 5, 2010 3:06 PM

No, the Lions are a much better team then the Skins are, top to bottom. They did what the Skins need to do and that is PURGE this roster, gather draft choices by trading vets and rebuilding.

They turned over over 50% of their roster last year, drafted smartly and are now heading in the right direction.

Oh BTW, they have also beaten the Skins the last two years.

I haven't been commenting here throughout the season. Reason is I have been so disgusted with the decisions of Shanny.

I feel he did very well to come and get the team into football caliber conditioning and in a competing to win mode.

But his decision making beyond that has undone it all.

The thing with Albert not playing and clearly the defense needs him on the field and other decisions, especially with the offense has soured me tremendously.

His overall performance as coach is akin to that basketball coach down at the Verizon Center.

I said it before we traded for McNabb. I was all for keeping Campbell. Not because I think he's better but because we needed the draft picks and there was a good selection of QB's in the draft this year. Looks like I was right. I've tried to support him because he is our QB but damn. A bad oline AND a QB making bad decisions/throws makes a bad team.

It's a good thing Shanny got rid of him

AH practiced Wed and Thurs. Sick Fri. The word Kelli Johnson had was that AH had a poor practice on Thurs. The way this team has played today, do you think many had a good practice week. Consider TW. He was out a day this week with an injury, but was able to make on the field today, albeit as a backup.

Posted by: TWISI | December 5, 2010 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Shanahan, like Haynesworth, came to DC to retire and accept a big paycheck.

Letting his retarded son Kyle run this offense is an offense to any fan with an IQ over 80. It's truly pathetic watching McNabb take the snap from under center and drop back to pass 90% of the time. The Skins might as well go shotgun every play as the other team knows we can't and won't run the ball.

Like Gibbs, Shanahan has basically become an administrator with poor hiring skills (players and coaches).

I am lucky I have NFL Season Ticket to watch real NFL teams play or I'd probably have to find a new hobby like walking my dog or something on Sundays.

Because it's absolutely as valid a question today as it was in the Spring whether Campbell + draft picks > McNabb.

I would like to believe that. Hope it is true for the Redskins sake, but I have seen this story before and it did not pan out. Have you heard the way the nose tackle is being dogged for not doing his job by the commentators and how the 3-down lineman have no impact at all.

Wow, The Skins are officially the worst team in the NFL. The worst part, and we fans are too passionate to realize that, is that it may takes years to sort out this mess that is this team under Snyder.
The team is old and has no talent with their young players. Ideally, it would be best to rebuild through the draft but far too long we have been bypassing it for a quick fix by trading away our draft picks for older veterans.
The Donovan McNabb signing, as much as I hate to admit it is one of those examples. We gave up a 2nd round draft pick to the Eagles for this guy, and he has yet to prove his worth. The Eagles meanwhile are laughing at us, especially after the butt whooping they gave us a few weeks ago.
To top it off, good coaches come to DC and get paid, and seem to lose their ability to coach as well. How in the world is this Defensive Coach still employ is beyond me. The Skins have the worst defense in the league.
If they wish to completely overhaul the D from a 43 to a 34, it would take at least 3 seasons to get the personnel they need.
And then of course there is Haynesworth. They should have traded the guy a long time ago for a top 4 round pick. What is most likely to happen however is the Skins will release him at the end of the season for NOTHING.
Without draft picks and stupid signings, the Skins will be BAD for at least 3 years.

You build a team having consistently good drafts. Not all of your draft picks make the team...even on the best teams, but if you draft 7 or 8 players a year and 6 make the team, you're in good shape. If you draft 10 players and 4 make the team and then you draft 5 and only 3 make the team...that's the difference.

You MUST have responsible free agency which is where the Redskins have failed miserably...

Poor drafting, poor evaluation of talent, irresponsible free agent spending and giving away picks EQUALS

This sh*t you see here today.

Mcnaab has bad decision making is inaccurate and our defense is too stupid to understand how the 3-4 works. Posted by: beep-beep | December 5, 2010 3:46 PM

The same. Like I said, we have a bigger problem than making an example out of Haynesworth. Making an example of Haynesworth is just part of the crap.

I know you can agree when we decided to switch from the 43 to the 34 to be a more prolific defense, no one signed up for becoming the worst D in the League.

We certainly cannot blame that on Big Al. I think Big Al is smiling bigtime on the inside, for if you evaluate all the things he said about playing the 34, it is now appearing that his wisdom and foresight has turned out to better than Shanny.

LarryInClintonMD.

We are the worst team because I see very little potential on this team to improve next year. We have another draft coming up where we do not have a 3rd and 4th round pick. Traditionally where you would build o-line depth. Considering how bad we are I would have rather watched Campbell stink it up and have our third round pick.

Posted by: m_p_holmes | December 5, 2010 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Everyone saying the OL is trash. I've rarely seen Donovan sacked or hit while throwing today. Our offensive problems are that DM can't throw an accurate pass, and when he does, the receiver drops it. In the unlikely event that they catch it, they'll fumble it. It is that simple.

the redskins simply don't DESERVE to win games.

Salinas we suck partially because of coaching. I don't care if it takes being out there from 7 AM to 12 AM if all they do is sit there with the QB's throwing passes to CR and all our WR so they CATCH the freaking ball (and DM might improve his accuracy) they should be catching the ball and not coughing it up continuously.

For all you armchair GM's that are saying you ONLY build a team through the DRAFT are WRONG!

This sh*t you see here today.

your and idiot. how do you get these players when you have only 4 pics a year. Yeah they wont all be good players but your chances go down when you only get 4 picks a year. with ten picks you might actually get some starters. Look at the steelers, look at the pats. Their whole teams are players they drafted and they let go of the older player (moss) (Joey Porter). Draft is the only way, FA is to only fill holes after the draft. Your either Daniel Snyder or a complete idiot. I guess thats the same thing my bad..idiot

I had a really detailed dream last night about the this game. Buchanon picked off Eli with 26 seconds left, Skins down by 4, 26-30, on the 30 yard line. Next play was a crossing route to Banks for the score with .18 left on the clock.

I woke up thinking we scored too soon. Go figure.

rickyroge - why would you get rid of Heyer? Why would you get rid of RockyMac? Why would you get rid of Moss? I understand they're not the best but they're the best at what they do now. And for Heyer - he's our best backup OL, so getting rid of him makes no sense. Making sure he doesn't get into the lineup is how you fix that - you put good, durable starters in front of him. There's no reason to get rid of RockyMac - his knees have been fine, has played well and I doubt he wants to make Demarcus Ware type money, which would be the only reason to get rid of him. With Moss - to get rid of him means you spend super big $ on a WR who may not perform here anyways - it makes little sense. Bring him back for a couple years until you can not only draft his replacement, but coach him up so he's not in his rookie season stinking up the joint the way most rookie WR's do.

In the begining of the year there were lots of optimism about this years club. I ponderd how much better could this team be with the additions of Shanny and McNabb. 10-6 and 6-10 came up in my head. If everything clicked in the first year. 6-10 is staring at them right in their face. I am with the crowd that believe in letting Allen and Shanny to rebuild this roster in 2 off-seasons. I do however suggest that if they could get their hands on a hot rookie prospect coming out of college then go for it. I have lost my faith in McNabb. This is the worst statisical year he is going through. McNabb is not a rookie but a old vet. Then why is he having so much trouble grasping this offense. He is way too inaccurate in his throws. There is no urgency in his game. I have some Philly friends and they all point that out to me. I know the Skins main objectives in the off-season will be to address the offense and defense lines. But they should not forget to address their QB situation. In McNabb I do not trust.

That's true; but I think the history shows that to be consistent you have to use that approach. And augment it with FA.

Sure, a team can focuse on FA and be successful for a year or two but without young players being able to step in when the veterans go down (or move on), eventually it'll catch up with you.

And if you draft poorly, you're not getting better.

There's no guaranteed way to be successful. It's just that is sure looks to me that the teams that emphasize draft over FA in the long term will be more consistently good.

Posted by: SteveMG | December 5, 2010 4:42 PM | Report abuse

Lifelong Skins fan - this team is simply vermatched in every phase. 5-11 this year and we're lucky to have won five. Another last place finish in the division. some more long years ahead as this team needs significant revision.

Need to fire Haslett and go back to 4-3. We don't have the personnel and it will take 5 years to transition. Should also fire Kyle Shannahan as he is the worst play caller in football. He has little talent to work with, but his play calling compounds the problem. Too bad he's the coach's kid and will still be around next year.

Complete upheaval of players - less than 10 that we should retain, ge rid of 40+ of them and start over. McNabb isn't the answer but might have to be for 1 more year. Orapko, Landry, Alexander and Banks are the only ones worth hanging onto. Williams didn't live up to the number 1 pick, and probably won't last five years.

After allowing many FIRST to every teams we have played this season, with the latest being that the Giants never scored on their opening drive until today against us. The Rams, and the Lions, all teams we considered worst than us, had FIRST something or anything against us. To top it off, a Defense that can't stop anyone and their grandmothers from running, catching and scoring on us, and which is OFFICIALLY THE WORST in the NFL.
You are right, I must be incompetent indeed to judge.

Mike Shanahan stinks as a coach. He may be some kind of a a disciplinarian, but it's obvious he can't motivate a man on fire to jump into a swimming pool.

The Redskins came out looking like they had a playoff spot already locked up, and the Giants came out like they had to win this game and run the table to have a chance to make the playoffs.

What is it with this guy and Haynesworth? Keeping our best DL off the field is not HELPING this team win. He didn't look sick to me. So what if he didn't practice Friday? And that Kemo guy is garbage, witness the dissing he got from the Fox commentators.

A lot of these guys didn't want to play today, didn't want to catch balls, sure as hell didn't want to tackle, and didn't want to block. A lot of that is on the coaches.

Lastly, the decision to bring McPick here is looking dumber and dumber each and every game. This team is a mess, a joke, and officialy the laughing stock of the NFL. This is what are Washington Redskins are, and have been for far too long. The crazy thing is it doesn't matter who the coach is, who the QB is, co-ordinators are, GM....

...will it ever end?

I'm not getting any younger.

What makes the Skins the worst team in the NLF?
Well on top of the fact the NFL stats says we have the worst Defense in the league, no other teams in the league look less promising for the future than the Skins. All of the teams that have worst records than the Skins now have promising young talent at most of the skills positions, and more importantly will be looking to build through the drafts. Those teams are for the most part one or two players away from being competitive.
The Skins on the other hand have no considerably young talents at any of the skills positions. We Have been giving away draft picks like candy even to opponents in the division for older veterans on the downturn of their career with the latest being Donovan. As if that is not enough, we will probably have to release players with huge guaranteed contracts such as Haynesworth for nothing in return because they have no stock value with anyone and have become problematic on the team. Signing a player for $100 million with half of that money guaranteed, and this player only plays 8 games a season and about 10-15 snaps a game is the ultimate joke of the century.
The Skins are the Detroit Lions of the past decade under Matt Millen as GM. Stupid decisions of those running the team will take years to overcome as the Skins are old, have no draft picks and have a huge salary to boot.

Sooo..If the Skins pick in the top 10, it might be very likely they'll take a QB in the first round (depending on the talent available at the position) and me thinks a center or guard in the 2nd round.

The real problem now is with so many gaping holes appearing now because of the new found 3-4 defense, its going to be hard to fill those holes with quality players in FA and the draft. That, in my opinion, was the biggest blunder this season.

Sometimes you have to go with what works, yes the 4-3 they ran wasn't tremendous, but for the most part it was solid. Now they have to hope that 1. There will be enought quality 3-4 players in FA available 2. Have to hope that most of them sign with the Skins 3. And what if they get those players and the defense still sucks?

Posted by: ga8085 | December 5, 2010 5:16 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is, the Skins are not the worst team in the league. Buffalo, Carolina, Cincy, and Detroit have that wrapped up. If the Skins were the worst, there would be a sense that a real long-term plan would be necessary, something that would grow the team from within, avoiding high-priced free agency busts that burn draft choices and give aging veterans one last chance before retirement.

But Washington is close to the bottom, and a culture of losing has settled in, as the winning years recede to dim, distant memories. Seems like Riggins and Monk were another lifetime, now, in some parallel universe.

I don't buy that Snyder is the blame for all of this, but he *is* responsible. It's his team, his money, his stadium, his coaches, his players, his micromanagement. He's run the team the same way for 10+ years now, and nothing has changed. This is the definition of insanity. It's depressing that no one learns this. Why is the club always a coach, or a wideout, or running back, or free safety, or inside linesman, away from competition? It's always about one more piece. It should never be about one piece - it's *all* the pieces.

Success means doing your homework, developing and sticking to a plan, and getting lucky. Even luck is something of a managed commodity, as true luck is a random die-throw, but managed luck is when you stack the deck in your favor by scouting college underclassmen, or build a stable coaching staff. Folks are calling for Shanahan's head, and I don't think that's the answer either - you want another system to learn? But at some point, you have to settle on one head coach who can give you ten years, no matter how bad it looks in year one.

Other folks are calling for McNabb's head, and I do think he will be a one-and-done fixture in DC, contract notwithstanding.

*sigh* I've droned on too long, so back to you in the studio, Jason.

hey beep-beep. The Giants have significantly more injuries (to better players) than do the Skins. Yet you are gonna hang your hat on INJURIES as some sort of reason that you got blown out? You are truly grasping at straws. Congrats. You are a terrific fan - if being completely delusional to the point of insanity is a qualification for being a terrific fan.

I thought you meant people let go by the current FO, not ancient history.

Posted by: lifelongfan | December 5, 2010 5:20 PM | Report abuse

@rls,

Those two are plenty pessimistic - just a lot of different KINDS of pessimism going 'round these days.

Differing proportions of blame, with plenty to go around.

Had to record the game and watch later. Just finished.

The number of mental mistakes made today is just astounding. FIVE turnovers? Don't know what to say. This is just a bad football team. Slightly better than last year, but still bad.

Eesh.

scampbell and beep-beep. You guys must be sharing the very last of the kool-aid from the bottom of the pitcher. I didn't think there were any remianing delusional Skins fans left, after years of having your irrational optimism beaten out of you, but you must have been hiding in a cave this entire time. Your team absolutely sucks

You really haven't paid attention to anything that I've written. Go back and read all my posts from today before you run your worthless c0cksucker.

doesn't even have to be a rainy day, just a Monday as a Skins fan to get you down.

Oy, whether they're the worst team or not, they're a bad team - clearly the bottom 1/3 if not 1/5 - with little young long-term talent to build around.

I'm sticking with them even if it means I have to watch the games with the sound down and the brightness off.

However, I will turn the TV on. I promise.

Let's take all the emotion out of this blog...

With all the mistakes this organization has made for as long as it has made them, did we really expect success this soon.

It is in these times, we have to be patient and let the movie play out. How the rest of this season and the off-season is managed will dictate a path to success or not.

Posted by: rickyroge | December 5, 2010 5:27 PM | Report abuse

I GUESS you could make an argument that Cartwright, Campbell, and Betts are all doing/did better under new coaching/in different roles, but who knows how much of that is DUE to different coaching.

I also think you'd be wrong, at least about two out of those three three.

Leigh is a nickel back, Marcus is MIA and Marko just got cut by a CFL team. Devin had a good special teams day but you dont draft a third round WR to be a special teams players. Antonio went on to a nice career. Brad was the man, and he was athletic...joke

You guys must be sharing the very last of the kool-aid from the bottom of the pitcher.

I drink that kool aid with those guys on the regular.

So whatever mud you sling on them hits me.

Why?: I'm a loyal redskin fan.

I'm not caught up in a loss to a team we rarely beat.

We knew the Giants were a supreior team to to say otherwise is foolish.

The feature very athletic front lines and drafted and added players in a very methodical manner.

Hopefully, Shanallen emulates this.

We finish the season against them at home: perhaps they'll be payback.

Totally agree with you, rickyr.

However, we've been hearing that exact same thing for many years now.

How about just once since 1992 (1999/2005/2007, maybe?) this team marginally exceeds expectations?

(As for "three three," wtf, sorry.)

ok..ok..
Cartwright, Campbell, Betts, Torrence, Pierce, Devin Thomas..(got the Giants special teams game ball today) . oh and Brad Johnson...haha.

Dude, you are an idiot. Cartwright is the same as he ever was. Betts was cut and resigned in the same year. He was only resigned cuz Bush was hurt. Campbell has been benched multiple times this year.

What makes the Skins the worst team in the NLF?
Well on top of the fact the NFL stats says we have the worst Defense in the league, ...

Posted by: JeanJak | December 5, 2010 5:10 PM

Stats don't say that at all, JanJak.

Look at these stats, before today's game:

Redskins 5-6 Points Allowed 262
Panthers 1-10 Points Allowed 276
Cardinals 3-8 Points Allowed 319
Broncos 3-8 Points Allowed 323

Look, the Redskins suck and their defense is bad. But there are other teams with worse records and weaker D's. You're blowing wind if you think they're the worst team in the league. If they were we'd have it made on draft day.

Posted by: beep-beep | December 5, 2010 5:45 PM | Report abuse

Redskins can only win with turnovers. They need a short field.

----Mypostisafake

If you're saying they should be in a Pop Warner league, i agree.

Posted by: TheCork | December 5, 2010 5:47 PM | Report abuse

I think those numbers/the order are gonna change after today, beeps, and we were all talking based on today's performance . . . Still only 3rd worst, though.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | December 5, 2010 5:50 PM | Report abuse

Competitive week in week out -- this was my most tempered expectation for the 2010 Washington Redskins -- and for the first part of the season, we were playing tough, win or lose.

Now...

we look absolutely gutless.

Blame it on injury if you please, but I dunno.

It occurred to me today the fans of our divisional opponents (Giants, Eagles, Cowboys) must be grateful that Dan Snyder purchased the team years ago. Since then, the Skins have becomoe the doormats of the NFC East and at this time of year when team's are driving for the playoffs, they are an easy win. Sad situation. Wonder if it will ever change.

Posted by: pkirwin657 | December 5, 2010 6:04 PM | Report abuse

Any chance the Skins can trade Daniel Snyder for a future draft choice?

Posted by: wallyballou | December 5, 2010 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Can't BELIEVE we forgot BL! Nice call, loux.

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | December 5, 2010 6:08 PM | Report abuse

my honest guess is that we will trade McChoke and fat all to move up to grab the best QB in the draft Andrew Luck! He is perfect for this offensive system and compared to the other qbs in the draftthe right man for this wco style! Cam newton is a spread qb and would turn out to be a flashy jason campbell in this offense! Ryan Mallet would fit well in this system but not as well as Andrew Luck! Think about it if we are rebuilding , we took a LT last year and with the qb best talent in years coming out the obvioues choice is we draft a qb in the 1st and wr in the 2nd! God if we go qb I hope we take the very best qb and that's Luck! He was born in DC so he would be a PERFECT REDSKIN!! In FA I would love us to sign mankins to sure up the left side of the oline_ sign a starting rt and rg and look for a young center that would put rabach on the streets, sign wr santonio holmes or randy moss and brad smith but def not vjax he is an overrated bum that was made by rivers, sign edwards as de, and shaun rodgers as nt unless we could land ngata however you spell it, for us to find a olb that will dominate along with orakpo, a mlb that we groom to replace fletcher, bring back the man Champ Bailey so he can end his career as a redskins and sign or draft a young cb , if the colts get rid of BoB sanders I would love the team of him and Landry they would dominnate for the next 5years! It's all a pipe dream but it would be alot better than this current team of scrubs!! As for rb I think Ricky williams has some very good years left I would love to see us make a trade for Toby Gerhart to groom as our 2011 version ofriggo! I think if we could get chris Long for cheap in a trade we couldturn him into a dominating olb he would be a force as a redskin!! It's all just a man dreaming lol I would love to see it happen tho but oh well!! The redskins have alot of re-tooling and rebuilding to do with players that can learn and actually have success in these schemes on offense and defense!! This current team is filled with players that don't want to win that only want a check! HTTR MAY NEXT YEAR WE COME OUT AS A TEAM TO BE FEARED!!! May the glory days return to Washington! I trust that Shanny and Allen will turn this around !!!! HTTR!!! I think we should be using Cooley and Davis as wr threats and incorperate them alot more into the gameplan and passing game!!! I would love to see Brandon Banks be used as a slot wr alot more HE HAS BEEN THE ONLY GOOD THING ON THIS TEAM THIS YEAR!!! Orakpo would be dominating if we had another threat at olb and on the dline but as the lone warrior he is always held time and time again!!! We need to get or create more star on this defense!!! HTTR!!
