They hired an unqualified guy who they wanted to boss around, not lead the team as coach. ...

Posted by: MistaMoe | December 20, 2009 2:18 PM |

But now that he's been here for two years, and has learned the job, why remove him? ...

Posted by: MistaMoe | December 20, 2009 2:59 PM |

I suppose it possible to go from "unqualified" to be NFL HC to "learned the job" in two years but the chances of something like that happening are microscopically small and the evidence suggests it hasn't happened. Like the dud didn't "learn" that he was no good at calling plays and then had someone else take over the responsibility. It were forced on him and he did not take it too well.

RR, I'm assuming you are correct, however, C Casserly said he spoke with Bruce Allen on Friday, Allen said he will evaluate Zorn & staff and make the decision at the end of the year. Is Allen starting out his GM job with a bunch of lies right out of the box?? I hope not, or he's in for some heat.

"Like the dud(e) didn't "learn" that he was no good at calling plays and then had someone else take over the responsibility. It were forced on him and he did not take it too well."

point taken

Zorn called plays like he had Matt Hassleback under center and Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson up front blocking.

And he showed no indication that he didn't know he didn't have the personnel to run what he called: that's why Sherm Lewis succeeded--he saw what was on the team, and schemed accordingly.

But again: Zorn is a goner, it seems like a forgone conclusion.

You make the point well.

Change continues to be he only consistent thing about this team.

Let's see, JZ is given two years to master a postion his employers knew he wasn't equipped to handle right away. JC has been given 5 years. Why the discrepancy? I think the players have finally started to "get it" and regardless of who's calling the pays, the plays would work better. Should Zorn be called a genius? No, but I think he deserves another year with BA at the helm and other assistants brought in.

Posted by: 1965skinsfan | December 20, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

Casserly also said BA told him he had complete control on all personnel decisions, including draft. This goes against what has been posted by JReid. IE: Shanahan coming in as HC/Pres.

Not really. Here's how it goes:

Shanahan to Allen: "Only way I'm coming is if you rewrite your contract so I have control of personnel decisions."

Allen to Shanahan: "Okay. You got it, buddy."

I heard that, too, but I didn't hear "at the end of the year." I heard that he was coming in with an open mind and would evaluate Zorn. I think he'll have made a decision on Zorn by the end of the fourth quarter Monday night, if not before.

Posted by: League-Source | December 20, 2009 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Jason "They are not going to win another game this year" Reid predicts the Skins to win????? AND score more than 30 points??? Wow.

Posted by: charley42 | December 20, 2009 4:33 PM | Report abuse

LS, I don't doubt that that is how it will play out, just saying what he told Casserly on Friday. If all the deals are in place re: Shanahan, why does he put him self (BA) in the position of having made the statements?

If i was not 100% sure Shanahan was coming in, my fall back plan would be to let Zorn have another year and fulfill his contract. Since Jerruh is going to by all accounts make a run at Shanahan, the only smart move for BA to make is to say nothing is decided and evaluations will occur at the end of the year.

No deals are in place. There are a lot of rumors, including that there are ongoing negotiations between Shanahan and the 'Skins. Also, that Shanahan really wants to go to Dallas and is using the 'Skins to force a decision there.

If Dallas keeps playing like they did last night, there won't be an opening for Shanahan.

Exactly LS.

If the Skins beat NYG & Dallas (odds against that), Dallas will probably be courting Shanny. Do you get in a bidding war with Jerry, or do you stick with the improving status quo?

It's not Shanny or bust.

If I was to start creating a list of potential coaches that would be an upgrade to Zorn, I might never finish.

How many of those folks calling for a new HC will also be those too empathetic to QB Campbell for having to learn another system?

Posted by: 1965skinsfan | December 20, 2009 5:42 PM | Report abuse

Last night didn't do anything for Wade Phillips.

If they don't - at MINIMUM - reach the NFC Championship Game, Wade is fired.

Book it.

Forget actual coaches. I think an Commodore-64 would be an upgrade.

I hope they're both gone at the end of the season, and I think I'm going to get my wish.

Shanny runs run heavy version of the WCO and unless they are going to make JC play a position not named QB, then I have zero empathy.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 20, 2009 5:47 PM | Report abuse

About three, four weeks into the season, I can't tell you how many times I screamed fire the sob, he's the dumbest @%#*@*^ coach I have ever seen. Since the Sherm L experiment, things have improved each week. Campbell looks better than he has his whole career. If that where to continue through year's end. I'd be tempted to keep the current system for another season. Fix the O-line, OLB, FS and see what happens rather than starting from scratch yet again.

Posted by: msrent | December 20, 2009 5:48 PM | Report abuse

I'm just saying be careful what you wish for. JC has looked much better lately.

I don't think Zorn has gotten any smarter either. Still terrible at play calling and live game decisions. But he brought in a system that works and must have some teaching skills, cause the offense is clicking now.

Under Zorn, ARE returned punts on a regular basis through game 12. Any Zorn lovers want to address this and try and convince me why he should still have a job?

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | December 20, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

The optimism is the result of barely losing to the Eagles, the Saints (who have proven against the Skins, the Ryan/Turner-less Falcons and the Cowboys that their D sucks), and beating the Raiders easily last week.

The Redskins may get their azz handed to them on MNF by the Jints.

I hope that doesn't happen, but I won't be surprised if it does.

Like I said, I don't think he got any smarter. NO game time decisions, take the mike off his headset. D Smith should decide who plays on ST (unless he is the one who decided to play ARE back there all year)

I keep seeing all these 'ideas' about Mike S. coming in to D.C. after the end of the season. Has anyone heard that from his camp? Other rumors say he is looking for the Dallas job to work with Romo whom he wanted to draft in Denver, or to work with Cutler in Chicago should L.Smith get tossed. There is too much to do and too long a wait until it gets done to bank on a the Shanahan show in D.C.

Who said it was Zorn who decided ARE was to be back there returning punts? We
don't know what was told to Zorn in terms
of preferred punt returners. But I do hope it was Zorn who pounded on tables to get ARE outta there! We'll see Monday night. . .

It's really funny how soon these fans forget - or decide to NOT REMEMBER!

Dan Snyder still has his littler, grubby fingers in this franchise, two-knuckles-deep!!!!

He said that St. Joe would have ultimate decisions. BULLL!!!!!! That's why St. Joe went home, not because he wanted to be with little grandson.

Marty was the only one that had control, albeit for a short time. He fired Vinny-the-lap-dog, told Dano to stay out of the building and won eight of his last 11 games. But, Dano had NO FUN letting it go.

So, Shannahan, Gruden, even the return to life of Lombardi wouldn't make a darned bit of difference. This franchise IS CURSED. PERIOD.
