Goode Released; Verdun-Wheeler Back

Although the Redskins got down to the 75-player roster limit yesterday with the cuts of Matt Sinclair and Burl Toler, they released Jason Goode this morning and re-signed Danny Verdun-Wheeler. The team had released Verdun-Wheeler on Aug. 4, along with Stuart Schweigert. (Man, Aug. 4 seems like half a season ago.)

Goode, a 6-3, 238-pound tight end out of Maryland, has turf toe. Verdun-Wheeler returns to bolster the linebacker numbers, with Marcus Washington resting his hip a bit last week.

The deadline for reaching 75 players is 4 p.m. (EDT) today. Teams must cut to 53 players by 4 p.m. Saturday.

Kinda tough I would think to come here a RFA and try and make it on the team at TE. Cooley is a god, we drafted Davis and he is doing best of all or rookie picks, basically means you have to beat Yodes, who plays like a pass catching Tackle.

So why is do they call the O-line position Offensive Tackle? I never see them tackle anyone. The Guard, makes sense as does Center, never understood tackle. Than again 1/2 the names make little to know sense to me.

Ah, Lord knows that can happen, Talent. Good morning.
Who's Jonthefisherman? He has good ideas, although I must say that Jasno is not a "tubby dork".
Nate, you're thinking of Babatunde Oshinowo. :)
Once Goode hurt his toe, you knew he was going to get cut, given the depth at that position.

To continue my crazy line of thought on football terminology.

We have a Quarter back, a half back and a full back. But why doesn't the half back line up before the full back, they are out of order. And where is the 3/4 back, what happened to that guy?

Tight End, I get a little bit, the end part makes sense (end of the line) but not so much the tight, also they get so many gay jokes maybe they should change that part.

On Defense the names make more sense, Defensive tackles have Defensive Ends outside them, the Linebacker, stands in back of the line, the Safety stands behind them because better safe than sorry. But what about the Cornerback, what corner are they at the back of? the field has 4 corners but the cornerback is only there as a last resort if someone's about to score.

Posted by: Alex35332 | August 26, 2008 9:35 AM | Report abuse

I wonder if Zorn is going to use Yoder more on the field because he could help Jansen block, more effectively than Sleepy can. Or will he play Sleepy more because of his skill set as a pass catching receiver. I have to admit amongst all the criticism that has been given regarding picking another pass catching TE in Davis, it will be a scary thought for opposing LB's knowing that Cooley and Sleepy are running loose in their backfield freeing up for receptions.

You know, I've seen him on television and I even met him in person at the shamadingus. If you think of "tubby dork" as a compliment, it kind of fits. As an insult, then no he's not one of those. He's more like a "cool lovable portly geek" maybe?

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 26, 2008 9:39 AM | Report abuse

Earl, we can always run a 3 TE set. Line up no backfield, moss and El split out left and right Cooley out on one side with Yode and Davis on JJ's side. Now that could cause some fun trouble.

Alex,

Or we could keep El & Moss split out, keep the empty backfield, take Jansen out and put Yoder in his place and make him "tackle eligible" (I think that's what they call that when an O-Linemen can go down field for a pass) and then bring in the beast himself Mike sellers to line up where you would have Yoder line up and then send them all downfield and just wreak total havoc on the LB's Safety's and CB's. Awwwww Maine !!! We call it the Jumbo Beast package !

nate, sorry for the late reply again...

so you've come out with another excuse for JC this year? "only 20 starts"! can i borrow your phrase for a second "wow! just wow!"....this is his 4th year in the league...but in your honor i'll do my top ten excuses for JC's performance for jc backers:

1. (and it has to be this one) 8th "offensive system" in 8 years. i mean c'mon that has to prevent a qb from being a qb.
2. "only 20 starts in the nfl"!
3. bad offensive line (this is going to be the #1 excuse for him this year.)
4. rookie headcoach.
5. short recievers and the big receivers didn't pan out.
6. not a west coast kinda guy...more suited for run and shoot kinda offense.
7. no running game.
8. chemistry (whatever that means).
9. physics (mainly to do with gravity).
10. i don't know...his accent...

and yes, gibbs talked to me one on one and said regarding JC "oops! i did it again." refering to his desmond howard pick.

second me saying todd's skins best chance this year isn't exactly jumping on his bandwagon...it's more like jumping on his season saving raft. (just as we did last year.) yeah, he's old, with old arms, legs, and body but he's better than jc.

4th, thank you so much for letting me know regarding riggo's show. cuz i sorta felt bad for the dude since he just moved to potomac like a couple of months ago and then his show gets canceled. yes, can't wait to have micky and mini off the radio. heard sucks-a-root!

i been waiting to share this thought with you guys for a couple of days now...was watching the departed for like the 4th time...(great movie!)...and i didn't realize how short marky mark is...the dude looked 6 inches shorter than jason borne! i didn't know that was possible.

also watched bank job (ohh shti!!!! i'm gonna get a late fee! well if it wasn't for this blog i probly wouldn't have rembered it)...it was okay. i wouldn't pay money to see it.

3 good games, 1 bad game. JC looked good at times last year. So he has not one bad game but 1 bad half of one meaningless game and Todd Collins it is? If TC goes in this season to "save the season" we are all really screwed cause if he's the answer what is the question?

Maybe we should get Charlie Frye, he's the next Tom Brady after all he looked good for one half of one preseason game last night.

You may be right about JC who knows. Certainly at 26 in his 4th year we need to see flashes of him being a good QB but let's try to keep at least SOME perspective.

If you listen to what JZ says, TC struggles in the offense. They have practiced a lot more than they have shown in games.

JC seems to be progressing well, base upion JZ and practice. I too am worried about what the games have shown us so far, but really, it is all speculation.

Which is fun and why we do it, but the true test is Sept 4th so we shouldnt get all a tizzy prior to that,...

I don't think he has below average intelligence.

The speed issue is that people keep telling him to be a pocket passer when I think he is really a mobile QB, not like McNabb was but more along the Garcia lines (and in pre-season you don't run as a qb).

But he does have a fumbling problem when hit from the blind side

I'm confused by the following dealer:

but he dropped back to pass like 12-15 times

i know his stats were 4 of 10

How can he drop by to pass 12-15 times, and have stats that reflect otherwise...??

Unless I'm missing something??

Posted by: Greg | August 26, 2008 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Just so we're clear... ONE terrible exhibition game by the entire team, especially the O line, and suddenly Jason Campbell -- who everyone agreed played two great exhibition games and one good one prior to this, and who everyone agreed was on the way to mastering this offense throughout training camp -- is chopped liver. Again. Riiiight.

I'll take Jason Campbell, thank you very much. Only 20 starts in the league so far, with a middling win-loss record, decent stats, some really good moments and some stinkers, and plenty of room for improvement... I think that improvement comes this season. Campbell's going to a big part of the solution for this team, NOT part of the problem.

A quarterback, particularly one who has been through numerous offenses/coaches/700-page playbooks, needs two years.
That said, I think Jason Campbell needs to show in every game this season that he's getting smarter. The lightbulb has to be glowing a little brighter each outing. There should be visible progress.

Dealer,

I agree if there is one game you want to look good it's the second to last game so yes splitting hairs it was the least meaningless of meaningless games.

JC hasn't proven he can be a successful NFL QB yet I absolutely agree. I just don't think that this one meaningless game is a better indicator of his value than his previous starts.

I also won't discount the changing of offenses. Remember it's not just about JC, it's the O-line, WR's and everyone associated with the offense. There is plenty of blame to go around.

I want to see JC steadily improve throughout the year as he gets experience in the offense and by the end of the year he needs to be making plays to help this team win. If not, Odin help us all, it's back to the drawing board.

Mr. Verdun-Wheeler, before you get your hopes up, let us introduce you to Mr. Dorian Smith, who also was invited back after being cut the first time..

Also, since Mr. Sinclair, a linebacker, outlasted you, when he gets healthy, if another LB is needed and he's still available...I guess what we're saying is, I hope you asked WalMart fora leave of absence, didn't just, y'know, quit.

One last point. It's not personal. It's only business.

greg, there should've been a question mark...sorry. i thought only the attempted passes counted towards the count...

seriously...are sacks attempted passes? on a QB? i didn't think it was.

so if 3 weren't his fault. then the other 7 were? (i hope you're not naive enough to count the 4 completions with 30 yards net...)

also have you noticed that the yac's are really low.

dealer, you and Sports Guru should get together. You'd have a terrific time congratulating each other for hating the starting quarterback of your favorite team.

And you could come up with new and interesting ways to criticize him (I can't put my finger on why "neandrathal" doesn't impress) and tout the many, many ways that the other quarterbacks on the Skins' roster are superior to him.

And you could dream up fantastic ways that he could have been traded -- or never drafted in the first place! -- and how wonderful things would be if the front office had just done what you are so sure they should have done instead of what they did!

Meanwhile, I'll be rooting for Jason Campbell, because I believe HE represents the best chance for the Skins to have a good season running Zorn's offense.

No sacks aren't attempted passes. They are however drop backs.

You played good not crummey (Get it? Ha ha) But you only weigh 238, much too light for a tight end. My advice? Take Mr. Verdun-Wheeler's old gig at WalMart and eat the merchandise. That'll put more lead in your shorts.

Meanwhile, best of luck to you, and my brother Sonny will give you a lift to the airport.

The problem with us redskins fans is that we want perfection from our team. Anything less than that is criticized by one person or another. Heck, we even criticize when a player limps off the field, then is carted off to the locker room, calling him less than manly.

The redskins cannot please all of us all of the time. They can't even please some of us most of the time. Most of the time we need to agree to disagree and remember what we learned in kindergarten.

Maybe we should wait until they tank the season before we lose our perspective.

He's a smart, nice guy who's eager to please and has had to please many coaches, maybe too many. I'm not certain he can be an NFL QB, but I believe he can and Jim Zorn gives him that best chance.

Dealer,

I think you've gone overboard on this one. He looked awful the other day but so did the whole team. Maybe it was the death of Bugel's daughter or whatever but the whole team was flat.

Nate's post may have been a bit over the top but perhaps he was responding in kind. If someone said that JC will be a great QB i'd say that's premature. To doom him and throw him to the scrap heap with Patrick Ramsey and the distinguished gentleman from North Carolina is equally as premature.

Why don't we all agree that JC is an unknown commodity but Todd Collins starting? What would that get us. Anyone believe this team is winning a Super Bowl with Todd Collins?

Totally random...

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen or participated in an "anti-Fantasy League"... I had this idea of a league where the goal is to field the worst possible lineup every week. So each week you'd win by getting fewer fantasy points than your opponent.

The catch: there'd be a penalty for starting any player who didn't score at least one point. That would prevent people from starting players who weren't playing or were injured or on a bye.

Seems like it would be fun, from the schadenfreude perspective, though I guess it would be hard work to fill out a roster by guessing who's going to be playing but playing badly. (And I write this as a person who does a lousy job playing 'real' fantasy sports.)

Does something like this already exist?

I watched it again at the bar last night (Comcast re-broadcast). It wasn't that bad of a game, esp. Skins' D, until after the second Panthers' FG. The Panthers KO after that, esp. their stop of Rock's return, was the point at which any chance of recovering momentum got lost. The Skins' never recovered momentum (which had shifted back and forth a couple few times before that). John Fox threw a couple of review flags that stopped Skins' momentum/field mojo. Zorn hasn't really had much opportunity yet to do game management re: field mojo, such as.

Did not want to watch the game on Sunday morning so spent more time with the in-laws. Finally on Monday I watched the replay on NFL and caught up with all the posts up here (minus the political stuff).

Cindy, we must be on our way to 250,000 after this game!

Boy do the Skins suck or what?!? But when you step back and think about it, we had a much more humbling game last year against the cheaters and the skins regrouped after that loss and played some good football. And the team we have now is basically the same team, so I can't fall into the "sky is falling" mentality.

Sometimes we need to fall on our face in public to remember to pay attention to where we put our feet when we walk. This team will be fine, but maybe like Colt Brennan coming off of the HoF game, we needed to come back to earth.

From what I could tell of the games this preseason my only concern is the right side of the OL, specifically the tackle. This has been the only position that has been consistently off. For the rest of the team there have been both good an bad which is normal at this time of year.

My hope is that we take a chance at some of the young OL players that have showed promise in camp and not just keep the "veteran" players because they are veterans. I would love to see Clark get a chance to stick around, though he may survive the waivers and make the practice squad unlike Crummey and Giesenger (sp).

And I will also be pulling for Mason even if it cost us Rock. He just has not impressed me in spite of his 73 yard run.

Back to some of the W word stuff.

My recommendation for offseason prep for Jason Campbell for next offseason ... yoga. Zorn is zen ... to find the "rhythm" or tempo, seems like Jason Campbell needs to "let go" and let it rip. He seems like he's still thinking through stuff. I say this stuff to counter the crap about people challenging his intelligence. Intelligence is not an issue. The issue (as I see it) is about comfort and relaxation.

I think the real answer is effective campaigning.

The McCain camp has done a good job of getting people to question Barack's ability to lead, citing his inexperience in politics. Sadly his voting record for the last year doesnt show much becuase he decalred 'present' instead of yay or nay.

And while a lot of people I know where on his bandwagon originally, wanting change, etc... the more and more people thought about it, the more they looked at his record and the fact that he doesn't have much of a track record.

Some would argue, hey, Bush didnt have a track record either... and i would say EXACTLY!

Now the fact that Gas has waned a bit, and other international issue has creeped up to help McCains stance. Biden was supposed to help Obama's case there, but apparently it didnt.

One article I read, which was intereseting and i cannot remember where it was, i think CNN, was that the Clinton Campaign has given McCain the path to beat Obama.

Clinton made a furious comeback in the Primaries once she stopped talking about herself, and started questioning Obama.

So that is the crux in my mind. I wish Obama would stop talking about the change and outline the change. So far I know where McCain stands on a lot of issues.

Maybe Strahan won't come back after all...

APPEALS COURT SIDES FOR STRAHAN IN DIVORCE
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 26, 2008, 11:51 a.m.
An appeals court in New Jersey has sided with Michael Strahan in his divorce case, ruling that he doesn’t owe his ex-wife $18,000 a month in child support and doesn’t have to pay for his ex-wife’s divorce lawyer, the Newark Star Ledger is reporting.

But in an interesting twist, another part of the court’s ruling could be dependent on Strahan staying retired. The appeals court ruled that Strahan doesn’t need to get a multi-million dollar disability insurance policy because he is retired. If Strahan un-retires, as the Giants want him to do in the wake of Osi Umenyiora’s season-ending injury, that issue could be re-opened. The cost of a disability policy would likely be extremely high, especially for a player Strahan’s age.

Another aspect of Strahan’s divorce case was whether he owed his ex-wife a $6.5 million payment; the appeals court didn’t rule on that issue because the Strahans reached a private settlement about it.

The three-judge panel said the child support Jean Strahan was seeking for Michael was excessive, and they called into question whether those payments really benefited the children at all.

For instance, Jean Strahan claims that the couple’s twin girls needed $30,000 in landscaping and $3,000 in audio visual expenses for their home, and that they needed to pay for a trip to Jamaica for their nanny and her family and for diamond jewelry for their grandmother. The court nixed all that.

The judges also ruled that Michael and Jean Strahan both shared the responsibility of providing for their children financially, and the opinion said of Jean Strahan, “There is no question that as a healthy, educated, 41-year-old, [she] is capable of earning her own income.”

Overall, the ruling would seem to be good news for Michael Strahan, and news that would make him less likely to feel the need to come out of retirement for big money from the Giants.

Rams check out Bentley, ex-Pro Bowl lineman
By Jim Thomas
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH
08/25/2008

Former Pro Bowl offensive lineman LeCharles Bentley, who has not played the past two seasons because of knee problems, paid a free-agent visit Monday to St. Louis.

Bentley took a physical, and left without a contract.

Although no deal appears imminent, coach Scott Linehan says the Rams aren’t closing the door on signing Bentley.

"We’re open to the possibility," Linehan said.

Bentley, 28, earned two Pro Bowl berths for New Orleans, starting 57 games at guard and center for the Saints between 2002-05.

But after signing a six-year, $36 million free agent contract with his hometown Cleveland Browns in 2006, Bentley has not played another NFL game.

Bentley tore the pattar tendon in his left knee at the start of training camp that year. Complications developed, including a staph infection, and three more operations were needed. Doctors at one point considered amputating the leg.

Cleared to practice with the Browns in June, Bentley asked for and was granted his release.

If healthy, Bentley could provide a boost for the Rams at center or guard. The Rams currently have Nick Leckey and Brett Romberg competing for the starting spot at center. Romberg has been sidelined for the past couple of weeks with a broken hand.

The guard position suffered a blow when Mark Setterstrom suffered a season-ending knee injury Aug. 16 against San Diego.

If he could play tackle I would say give him a chance. I do not think we are "desperate" enough at guard/center yet.

Great know due to unwarrented panicking about the OL needing immediate!!! help your talking about bringing in a washed up bad knee. Not happening. Go ask buges his take on the unit i doubt youll hear him talkin about picking up more insurance policies.

I thought Goode played well, however turf toe can take weeks to heal properly and the Skins were not going to keep four TEs. He could be signed to the practice squad, after overcoming the injury.

I like Yoder as the #2 -- he's big and effective as a blocking TE; plus he can catch in the red zone.

Davis will likely be inactive to start the year, unless he proves his worth on special teams.

My guess is we'll see Sellars in the three TE sets.

Siris;

How are they going to inactivate Davis?

Posted by: Zebra | August 26, 2008 1:06 PM | Report abuse

I'm thinking Mason would be on the inactive roster as well during the year, until Betts fumbles again in a key situation.....

I'd keep Geisinger over signing Bentley.

nate, i like it. hook it up. i'm sure to pick the girls, gints, and mcnaab as my starters.

skinz, didn't think it was that bad. shoulda put a smiley face at the end but i was in a rush. sorry about that.

i watch the games with the same hopes that nate (the ones he gets to watch), cl and jm and greg watch it with. i just don't see any improvements that nate is talking about in jc. i don't. wins and losses will tell the story. or atleast points scored. i hope we all agree on that one.

also...JZ's insistence on playing his starters against the other team's non-starters this week? what's that about? isn't everyone resting their starters this week plus it's a short week for the skins no?

Actually glad for Strahan. I recall his ex just took him to the cleaners. Really ugly stuff. The idea that you need a few hundred thousand a year to support two kids ... please!!

Zebra: NFL teams have a 45 man roster limit for games. So, prior to kickoff there are eight players designated as inactive each week, although they are still paid a game check.

This was designed to allow teams to develop reserves + stash older vets and have them available if other players have short term injuries.

My guess is younger players (like Davis and Kelly) will start the season on the inactive list and gain playing time when other players are injured or they show something in practice...

I know the starters looked terrible on Sat., but I think playing them Thurs. would be a mistake. Just stay healthy and get ready for the Giants.

This is for all of the Todd Collins supporters. Hey wake up and smell the coffee. Todd is a solid back up QB who helped the Skins make the playoffs. Nough said, but lets look inside of the numbers. He came in in relief of JC during the Bears game. The Bears offense suck who could not have beaten them. 2nd and 3rd game was against No offense Vikings and a Giants team that dropped about 8 wipe open passes. The biggest tell tell sign for Mr. Collins was his poor performance in the playoff game (which the hawks had game film options) in which he did not perform properly. There is a good reason why Todd has been a career back up. I guess Donavan McNabb was correct Black QB are judged differently that White QB's
