Graham Gano is 31st in the NFL on field goals

Redskins place kicker Graham Gano ranks only 31st in the league in field goals made, with a 72.2 percentage. He has converted all 13 of his point-after attempts.

The strong-legged kicker has 50-plus-yard range on field-goal attempts, but he has struggled at times in his first full season in the NFL.

in Week 2, Houston Coach Gary Kubiak successfully iced Gano in Washington's 30-27 loss in overtime at FedEx Field, calling a timeout before Gano missed a potential game-winning 52-yard kick. In the fourth quarter of Sunday's 17-14 victory over Chicago, Gano missed a 37-yard field-goal attempt that would have extended Washington's lead to six points, sending the ball off the left upright.

Gano said he struck the ball well but the wind at Soldier Field didn't cooperate.

"I think he said it best, that he probably wishes he played the wind a little bit more," Coach Mike Shanahan said. "The wind was blowing pretty consistently and it hit the upright. That is football. I got a lot of confidence in him."

Gano is talented and he's a hard-working kid, special teams coordinator Danny Smith tells me. That's good enough for me.

But despite having the support of Shanahan and Smith, Gano probably needs to finish the first half with a good performance against Detroit at Ford Field. With Washington beginning its bye week after that game, it would not be surprising, if Gano struggles against the Lions, to see a place-kicking tryout at Redskins Park during the team's time off.

Gano has had his misses. But he's been good on kickoffs and his misses don't discourage me.

FedEx isn't a kind place for kickers. Opposing kickers at FedEx are 7 for 13 this season. Vinitieri and Crosby of GB both missed 2 FG attempts at FedEx. Neither of those guys are at risk of losing their jobs.

Don't get confused, you lucky retards.

My Cowboys will STILL win the division and represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Romo going down is precisely why Jerry Jones stocked the our team with multiple QBs. Kitna knows the system, has NFL experience and will do what he is paid to do.

Meet you back here on Sunday after the Lions effortlessly spank that azz.

Doggedly,

Before you win the division, you have to actually win another game. I'm not sure where that's going to come from.

Wait, can you hear the buzz?

I think that's Jeff George trimming up his porn-stache before his flight to Dallas/Ft. Worth(less).

Welcome to 2-14 loser.

Make sure you wear your Tony SloMo jersey to a bar for the next time you play the Skins. Can't wait to see the 'Washington Body Snatchers' knock the shiitna out of John Kitna.

Next to last in the league, but I still have confidence in him. I'm not sure why I fell this way - I just think he's a good kicker of the ball. I hope they continue to give him a chance and things fall into place for him. (between the uprights and over the cross bar)

We play Dallas in 8 weeks. They won't risk bringing Romo back this year when they have no shot at the playoffs.

Not that it matters, cause Dallas can't beat a drum right now.

I think Detroit is in serious trouble.

This will be a revenge game for last year.

The guys here from the 2009 team won't forget last year.

Posted by: iH8dallas | October 26, 2010 2:29 PM

I hope you're right but, by that line of reasoning, we should've given the Lambs a beatdown for beating us in '08 and getting the team booed outta FedEx Field in a '09 9-7 squeaker. That 2008-09 Redskin Pride seems to wash off rather easily.

Posted by: MColeman51 | October 26, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Kickers need time to develop and unfortunately we have to let this kid get his reps in.

He'll make some, and miss others. On the Greenbay kick I thought Shannahan should have taken the extra time during the timeout to decide a solid 4th down play or punt it. A 52 yarder is not easy and it gives them solid field position if they miss. Which he did.

Posted by: Devo2 | October 26, 2010 2:35 PM | Report abuse

I say stick with Graham. He is experiencing some growing pains to be sure but I think he has the talent to be an elite Kicker in the league.

The last thing I want to do is cut David Akers again. Ouch.

I'd rather stick with Gano and have him grow with the team that go through kicker roulette like we have in the past. His misses have been reasonable, and he does seem to be getting better. And besides, if there was someone else out there who was any good, why wouldn't we (or anyone for that matter) have already signed them?

1.) The Cowboys can beat any 11 men on the field at a given time. In the Cowboys-Awfulskins game the referee decided he would be a hero to the hometown crowd and make a bogus holding call on Barron. Judging by you fools' reactions, he succeeded.

2.) There's a lot football to be played. A lot can change in ten games.

3.) You realize you're winning DESPITE your QB. Certainly, we can win WITH Kitna and the best young receiver in the game in Dez Bryant.

4.) Do you know anything about football? NOPE.

Am worried about this trip to Detroit. Redskins seem to have an uncanny ability to play down to the level their opponents.

And the danger here is that Lions appear to be much more competitive than their record might suggest...

Hope I'm wrong but if the Redskins play true to form... it could be an extra long bye week...

Heard from a reliable source that there was a pretty good kicker from the Swedish Premier Leagues that we were looking at before the trade deadline... a well-established, solid and accurate striker who goes by the name of Hamm Samvitch.

Am also given to understand Redskins were pretty close to signing him -- and had even reached initial agreement on the compensation, benefits and perks. However, just about the time we had the folks from Stockholm convinced to take AH92 in a straight-up trade for Samvitch, Redskins GM Bruce Allen got all greedy and insisted they throw in some Swiss cheese and chocolate.

So we could have solved two two problems with a single trade, but apparently, Allen's appetite for European foods is stronger than his commitment to winning.

Bring back Chip Lohmiller...

Or Mark Moseley!

Seriously though, I also have confidence in Graham. He's been blocked once, and a snap was botched. That makes a 13/18 FG percentage to a 13/16 and 21st overall.

I trust in Gano. I'm tired of the revolving-door kicking game.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 26, 2010 2:59 PM | Report abuse

fwiw, Gano is 8-12 on FGs at FedEx, opponents are 7-13.

Gano is 5-6 on the road, the only miss at Chi, where all kickers (including the hometown K Gould) are a combined 8-12 -- 7-10 excluding Gano.

Best as I can tell, Gano has taken 14 attempts on 'FG unfriendly' fields. His FG % shows it, but it also shows up in the FG % of the opponents.

Let's examine your boneheaded comments. You say that YOUR Cowgirls can beat any 11 men on the field at any time?

I take it you're counting the old man on the chain detail that one of the Cowgirls cheap-shotted when he wasn't looking and put him in the hospital.

Kudos! That's 1. Where are the other 10?

Now you are essentially accusing a referee of being a renegade, Tim Donaghy when he flagged the red Barron for putting Brian Orakpo in a reverse naked choke hold?

The man would have lost his freaking job if he didn't throw that flag and further, the red Barron did himself no favors when he'd already drawn attention to himself earlier when he resorted to trying to tackle Orakpo because he can't block a freaking statue.

You say the Skins are winning despite our QB?

Well.....at least we're winning.

And what do I know about football? Well I know this:

The Super Bowl will be played in your house and your team will be getting everyone drinks and nachos during the game.

I know that your OC is the WORST in the league.

I know that your coach is a putz.

I know that your owner will draft a QB this year.

I know that Miles Austin has Kardahian-itis; A condition detrimental to the hands, the symptoms of which include but are not limited to cramping and involuntarily spasming from repeatedly squeezing an over-sized and gelatinous azz.

I know that the next 10 Sundays will be more painful for you than the feeling of your clavicle snapping like a matchstick.

I know that Terrance Newman might get fined for breaking his own ribs.

I know that the Cowfaigs are now on everyone's homecoming schedule.

Party on Tampax! You have so much to celebrate!!!!!!

Hey idiot Reid. How come you no mention the fact the Gano is fantastic on kickoffs. Any stat on that dummy? If you go point out his rank only on field goals, let me educate you on the importance of kicking the ball to one side of the field and letting special teams pin the other team before the 20 yard marker. He's terrific but then to expect you to understand this and mention this in your weak, feeble, simplistic writing is asking too much of you.

Any thoughts on what we are going to do against Detroit?

You know, real football talk?

I think Torain breaks 100 again, with 2TDs.

I also think Fred Davis gets his first TD of the season.

Albert Haynesworth has another monster game. Contrary to what everyone thinks, I believe Hayney and Shanahan are getting on the right track.

Anyways, Gano has a lot of potential, is excellent at KOs and I say we stick with him. Unless we want David Akers 2.0.

Looking at the schedule, I think Detroit is a must win game this weekend. A win would put us at 5-1 in the NFC, with home games still remaining against Philly, NYG, Minnesota and Tampa Bay. Split those, or even go 3-1 and we have 8 wins in the NFC, which would probably help us alot in terms of tiebreakers...

JReid is always trying to get someone cut..Los, Haney, Portis, and now Gano..

JReid has struggled trying to post any meaningful blogs...He's a$$-backwards ways has him on the sh!tlist at Redskins Park.. according to sources in Ashburn...if this bullsh!t continues it would be surprising if he still on staff at the WaPo next March.

I personally am getting a little tired of seeing Gano miss important kicks week after week, but I think the data says to keep him around for awhile. Good NFL placekickers average around 80% for a career (for example, Morten Andersen averaged 79.7% over 20+ years; Gary Anderson = 80.1% over 20 or so years). Gano's at 77% including the end of last year and this year. Statistically, that's close enough to what we should realistically expect over a career, if he keeps it where it is. 72% this year stinks, but I think he's worthy of continued employment for now - maybe he's just in a slump. He has a strong enough leg. My recommendation would be to see where he is in another month or so. My guess is that we could replace a 72% kicker with one afternoon of tryouts, but not a career 77% kicker.

There was competition at every position and Gano beat out the guy who was competeing against him. That guy didn't ever exist, but shanahan said, "competition at every position" so there must have been a guy there and that guy must have been 32nd or worse b

Let Gano grow with the team. Why would "we" want to mess with it? He's better IMO than some the team has had in the past few years. As another posted, Vinitari, etc. miss some too. Now, if he couldn't hit any at all, ok another story. Not the case here. Don't worry too much about the 31st ranking either.

Oh, ugly win in Chicago...but it is a W. Great things are coming; Haynesworth playing really good, jumping over opponents!, wow. D Hall with 4 ints and a 92 yd TD. Awesome stuff.

My prediction is that the usual outcome will annoy us all:

The skins win a very, very, very close game with a team they should own.

The Shanahans' sideline look at McNabb's performance during the game might be titled "Buyer's Remorse".

Ryan Torain will have a big day.

And because of that, we win another close one 21-17.

Not worried about Gano...fretting about a kicker with less than a year experience is pointless. Kinda like going nuts on a rookie QB who throws a couple picks...he'll work his way through it and get better.
