Gregg Williams Is Gone, Blache Promoted

Williams, assistant head coach - defense, had a meeting with owner Dan Snyder this morning acccording to his agent Marvin Demoff, and is no longer a part of the organization. The sides mutually ageed that he was no longer a candidate, Demoff said, and will move on.

The meeting was pleasant and productive, Demoff said, and Williams intended to withdraw from their coaching search Tuesday. At the urging of Joe Gibs he stayed in the process. He reached out to Gibbs again Thursday and Friday and was asked to stay in, Demoff said. So he did.

In today's meeting Williams asked Snyder about media reports that he had disrespected Joe Gibbs. "Both Snyder and Cerrato agreed that that had never occurred and those reports were totally false," Demoff said. "They wished each other well in the future and the sides parted."

UPDATE: The Redskins issued this release:

BLACHE, ZORN NAMED REDSKINS COORDINATORS

ASHBURN, VA - The Washington Redskins today named veteran defensive coach Greg Blache to lead the team's defense and Jim Zorn as his counterpart on the offense.

The team also released their predecessors, Gregg Williams and Al Saunders.

"I want to thank Gregg and Al for all they did for the team," Team Owner Daniel M. Snyder said. "In particular, during our most difficult time last year, they both helped hold the team together as we kept moving forward. I am confident they will continue to be successful in the years ahead."

"Greg Blache is an outstanding coach with deep experience. Players respond to him, and his co-workers respect him. He has our full confidence," Snyder said. "We're counting on Jim to continue Jason Campbell's growth, while moving our offense forward."

"The process of selecting a new head coach continues, although no hire is planned until after the Super Bowl so as not to distract from the Championship game as well as to keep open all our options," Snyder added. "We are on track with our interviews, but in the interim we also are filling our coaching positions and re-signing several existing staff members. During our interviews with prospective head coaches we heard time and again how highly respected some of our 2007 assistant coaches were and who they would select to fill out their staffs. That intelligence is helping guide our hiring decisions."

Blache has been in the NFL for 21 seasons as a defensive coach, serving as the Redskins' defensive coordinator/defensive line coach for the past four seasons. Zorn joins the Redskins from the Seattle Seahawks, where for the past seven seasons he served as quarterbacks coach for the team that launched his professional career as a player and as a coach.

Blache joined the Redskins in 2004 after five seasons as Chicago's defensive coordinator. In both cities his units earned a reputation - with the statistics to back it up - as solid, aggressive forces. At Washington, he shares credit for the defensive unit being ranked in the League's top 10 for three of his four seasons (8th, 9th, 3rd). The story was similar in Chicago, where Blache's Bears defense was a consistent hard-hitting group, regularly being ranked in the League's top 10.

Zorn joined the Seahawks as quarterbacks coach in 2001, 25 years after he was the team's first starting signal-caller when the franchise was founded in 1976, and was named NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year. He led the Seahawks for nine seasons and currently is honored in the team's Ring of Honor. He is credited with the development of current Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and the team's regular high ranking in League offensive statistics, as well as Hasselbeck's personal Pro Bowl-level performances.

Zorn joined the Seahawks after holding the same position with the Detroit Lions for three seasons after breaking into the League as an offensive assistant with the Seahawks in 1997. Prior to becoming a professional coach, Zorn spent eight seasons in the collegiate ranks, two as quarterback coach at the University of Minnesota, three as Utah State's offensive coordinator, and three as an offensive assistant/quarterbacks coach at Boise State.

Blache began his professional career as defensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts for five seasons, and held the same position with the Green Bay Packers for six years after breaking into the League in 1988. He began his coaching career as a defensive assistant at his alma mater Notre Dame in 1968 after suffering a leg injury that ended his playing career. Following his graduation in 1971, he stayed on as a graduate assistant and then as an assistant coach for four seasons.

In 1976 he joined Tulane's staff where in various seasons he coached the offensive line, outside linebackers, and defensive backs. He returned to Notre Dame in 1981 to coach the running backs, followed by the defensive line and linebackers. He was defensive line coach for the USFL's Jacksonville Bulls for 1984-85, before returning to college to coach at Southern University and Kansas for one season each.

Blache and his wife Lynn have six children. Zorn and his wife Joy have four children.

Hey barno, just because Snyder and Cerrato say to Williams that they didn't say he knocked Gibbs, doesn't mean that those two dunces weren't telling folks that.

Dannyboy and the rest of the front office's words aren't worth a damn thing. They lie more than the President and that says something, because the President never tells the truth.

This team is a joke!

Folks, realize that only once Danny starts to lose financially, will his way of dealing with this team change.

It's time the fans make him realize he is a fool. Do not renew your season tickets. Do not buy Redskins merchandise. Do not visit the website. Do not listen to his BS radio station. Do not do anything that shows support for this team!

Here's to hoping that many, many players demand to be traded, and that Williams goes on to have a successful future in the NFL.

This team is a joke!

I am officially turning in my Redskins Fan Club card, as long as Dan Snyder is owner of this team.

This is the BIGGEST disgrace in the entire history of the Redskins organization. Snyder obviously is a complete idiot and would rather have his homeboy Cerrato happy than win a Super Bowl. Yet another owner in the DC area who knows jack about how to run a team...

Welcome to football hell.

i don't live in DC, and am pretty far from most of the media there. So i always felt Dannyboy had a bad reputation with the area...but i was just being ignorant and blind. this sucks, worst season ever...

I think you all are being WAY too dramatic. Do I think letting Williams go was the right choice? Probably not. Unless, he is planning on getting the OC from the Patriots. I'd take him over Gregg any day. Williams was a good coordinator, but a very mediocre HC when he was with Buffalo. A lot of the defensive credit has to be given to Blache too, who will continue the system and be very productive. I think this hiring of coordinators before a HC is strange, but I don't think Williams was such a great choice.

What A Colossal Fassel*!

Skins Fans to Dan: "Don't tase me, bro!"

Oh, too late.

*Fassel (fa-sul, noun)--a grievous mistake; for example, blowing up an emerging, playoff contending franchise by hiring an out of work, mediocre, has-been coach that other teams avoided; compounding the mistake by alienating the successor hand-picked, and groomed for 4 years, by a Hall of Fame coach; compounding the mistake further by failing to maintain team continuity as promised.

The last time I checked, Gregg Williams wasn't mentioned in the same breath as Vince Lombardi, Chuck Noll, Tom Landry, Bill Walsh or Gibbs. Yes, the players wanted him, at least that's what we hear. I haven't heard many offensive players support him. I'm not saying this process has been smooth but if Williams was so great, wouldn't Gibbs been more vocal to Snyder about this?? There is a reason Williams hasn't sniffed a HC gig since Buffalo fired him. Great DC, average HC, in my opinion.

Posted by: homer0890 | January 26, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

People-- calm down, now.
Should GG have been our next coach-- at least for a year to try him out while Cowher waits in the wings? Probably. Now Jacksonville gets their man.

I think it is very weird to hire the coordinators first, but look on the bright side-- these are some good coordinators to build around, particularly Blanche. I'm still hoping its not Fassel (REALLY hoping)-- maybe the Danny is waiting to try to get one of the Superbowl buggers and using Fassel as a back-up. Wish they'd give Grimm a look.

Either way-- emotionally, this sucks. But they're unproven on the field and we are REDSKINS fans. We bleed burgundy and gold. We stick with them no matter what, through pain and sorrow (if you want to mope, try being a Browns fan... or worse, a Cardinals fan... or Detroit). We're okay right now. Continuity was a sham, but until we see how the players respond and all of the puzzles fall into place-- lets hold off our judgment for now, support our team (feel free to hate Danny in the process), and hope for a great draft and off-season.

HAIL, babies.

F Dan Snyder and F our future coach Jim Fassel. I'll still be rooting for this team every Sunday next fall but am completely dejected about the owner we have been saddled with and the fact that we will never be a consistently good team because of it.

Sell the team you ahole.

Posted by: cdubb | January 26, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

This simply sucks! We have the worst owner in the league. Gregg Williams and the Skins D was the brightest spot of the Gibbs 2 tenure.

Who are we going to get now Fassel -- how exciting! The rest of the NFL am sure is jealous -- people have been beating down Fassel's door for years offering him head coaching jobs.

And after his wonderful stint with the Ravens he's even in hotter demand as a coordinator.

Good thing Snyder isn't blowing this team a part after they were so close last season -- continuity is the name of the game.

Now lets hope we have a blootletting of the core chemistry players and lets bring on some old high priced FA's -- the good times are back! I think this bodes well for Brandon Lloyd. Maybe he makes a comeback now. He's a Snyder kind of guy.

Subject: Go to hell Dan Snyder

Go to hell. You have destroyed what Gibbs brought in. I think I speak for all Redskins fans when I say I can not wait for you to sell this team. I'll be rooting for Six Flags to go into bankruptcy soon, and hopefully you to do the same so we can get an owner running this community institution in sane way. Congrats on completely destroying all the good will that Joe Gibbs brought to this team in less than two weeks. Getting rid of Gregg Williams was a huge mistake and your ego and obvious Napoleonic complex are getting in the way of your making sane decisions. Here is Greg Blache's Bio, he has a very accomplished and extensive background in the game of football.

Greg Blache joined the Redskins in 2004 to head up a strong defensive line unit after five seasons as defensive coordinator in Chicago. Blache works closely with assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams and focuses special attention on the development of the Redskins defensive line.
In 2003, Blache's Chicago defense finished the season fifth in the NFC in total defense, and 14th in the NFL, the team's highest league overall-ranking since the 1998 season. During his tenure, Blache's defenses forced 138 turnovers, including 37 in 2001, the most by a Bears defense since 1990, and accounted for 13 touchdowns (two in 1999, four in 2000, five in 2001, one in 2002, and one in 2003).

In 2002, Blache dealt with numerous injuries, leading to 11 different starting line-ups over the course of 16 games. While juggling personnel, the Bears defense continued with their attacking, aggressive style that set records during the 2001 season. They forced 64 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and reached a league plateau by forcing at least one turnover in 33 consecutive games, the second longest active streak in the NFL at the time.

In 2001, Blache molded the Bears defense into one of the top units in the league, producing the top-ranked scoring defense by allowing only 203 points in 16 games (12.7 points per game). His run defense finished second in the NFL and first in the NFC, allowing just 82.1 yards per game, while allowing only three rushes of 20 yards or more all seasons and only six rushing touchdowns.

Prior to joining the Bears, Blache served as defensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts for five seasons (1994-98) and held the same position with the Green Bay Packers for six years (1988-93).

In addition to his pro coaching experience, Blache has held positions with several college programs. He began his coaching career as a defensive assistant at his alma mater Notre Dame in 1968, after suffering a leg injury that ended his playing career. Following his graduation in 1971, he stayed on as a graduate assistant and then as an assistant coach for the Fighting Irish for four more seasons (1972-75).

He moved on to join Tulane's staff in 1976, where he coached the offensive line (1976-77), outside linebackers (1978-79) and defensive backs (1980). He then returned to Notre Dame to coach the running backs (1981), defensive line and outside linebackers (1982-83). After spending 1984-85 as defensive coordinator of the USFL's Jacksonville Bulls, he returned to the college ranks at Southern University (1986) and Kansas (1987).

Blache started his collegiate career as a defensive back for Notre Dame, but a leg injury ended his playing career prematurely.

He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology and a Master's Degree in secondary education, both from Notre Dame.

A New Orleans native, Blache and his wife, Lynn, have six children: Greg Jr., Jennifer, Christopher, Sarah, Corrine and Matthew. They live in Leesburg, Va.

Alan4-Your statement about '4 yrs as AHC to a Hall of Famer should be worth something.' If that's the case, he was responsible as well. The first Giants game this year, our D could not get them off the field in the 2nd half. The second Eagles game was a complete breakdown on the Defense. Look, I'm not here to bash, I'm as diehard a Skins fan as anyone that is posting. I'll I'm trying to say is that Williams isn't getting enshrined in Canton anytime soon and I doubt he'll ever be a HC in the NFL again.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. There were only 3 candidates for the HC job:

1. Coach Williams
2. Coach Snyder
3. Coach Spineless Pawn.

Now there are only two options....what Spineless Pawn, lilly-livered, weak-kneed coach will take the HC job where they don't get to hire their own staff?

Coach Snyder is sounding more and more likely!

homer, the defense is the only reason the Skins got 30 wins in 4 years. How many games did the O actually take over and win in the past 4 years? Even when there were heroics, like the 14-13 come from behind win against the Cowboys a few years ago, it was only possible because the defense held the the Cowboys to 13 points for 4 quarters!

Posted by: Alan4 | January 26, 2008 2:14 PM | Report abuse

How the hell do you hire an offensive coordinator aand a defensive coordinator BEFORE you hire a head coach? Don't you need to have his overall vision in mind, and have say in hiring the coaching staff? Snyder is just interested in milking an economic pig, instead of the Hawgs going to the Super Bowl (Vinny's eyeballs go berserk)..

Posted by: frak | January 26, 2008 2:15 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Skins have over 20,000,000 fans world wide. The U.S. population is about 300,000,000 and that would give the Skins about 7% market share of fanbase, sound reasonable?

The power of even 10% of those 20 million fans to boycott companies like FedEx, not eat at the stadium vendors, or even better not go to a game(s). I'm not suggesting anyone give up their season tickets because then someone else just fills your seat. I'm saying put your money where your mouth is and take a stand.

The internet is so viral that one you numm-nuts must be able to start a website, create a You-Tube video, etc..

As for me, where is the nearest UPS store so I can send a package to Mr. Snyder.

Most telling baout all this isn't that GW wasn't hired. It's the way all this was handled. GW had not heard from Snyder for 10 days after his last interview? Wtf is that? Bad bad bad. Bad PR, bad relations in general.

So far this whole process reeks of bad management. Snyder apparently thinks that because he has all the money, everybody must automatically respect him no matter what. Other football professionals operate in a world where respect is earned, not automatically given to whoever has the most money. Disconnect.

Goodbye, Redskins.

Barno

I'd like to refute your rebuttal about the administration's dishonesty before, during, and after the start of the Iraq War. Let's look at what you said

1. You claim the United Nations believed that Saddam Hussein had stockpiles on WMDs.

Fact: The United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) stated prior to the war that Saddam Hussein had no WMDs in 2003. To steal from wikipedia, "Based on its inspections and examinations during this time, UNMOVIC inspectors determined that UNSCOM had successfully dismantled Iraq's unconventional weapons program during the 1990s."

The cliff notes version can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNMOVIC

The longer version can be found here

http://www.unmovic.org/ (go to the Baghdad press briefings and have at it)

This report was accepted by the vast majority of the United Nations and the majority of the United Nations security Council. Its only detractors were the US and Great Britain.

2. You claim this administration is not lying, yet it CONTINUES to maintain that the Hussein regime was colluding with Al Queda.

Fact: This myth has been debunked REPEATEDLY (most recently in the non partisan 9/11 commission report), yet this administration CONTINUES to state this. There are three possible explanations for this

1. The administration is too stupid to understand any of these reports (though the 9/11 commission report statement "no credible evidence" http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5223932/ can't get much clearer)
2. The administration is too pig headed to admit it is wrong
3. The administration realizes this statement isn't correct, but since this fallacy is a key support point to this war as well as a great ploy to get support from the populace at large, they keep saying it. This would be referred to as a lie.

I believe lots of things about the Bush administration, but I don't believe that they are stupid, so it can't be reason #1.

Reason #2 is possible, but it loses a lot of oomph when you look at the adminstration's stance on WMD. In 2002-2003, they claimed/told the US they were 100% certain Iraq has WMDs. In 2005, a massive preponderance of evidence (most noteably finding no WMDs in Iraq) forced George Bush to say in 12/18/2005

"It is true that Saddam Hussein had a history of pursuing and using weapons of mass destruction. It is true that he systematically concealed those programs, and blocked the work of U.N. weapons inspectors. It is true that many nations believed that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction. But much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong"

Since there is equal (if not more) non-partisan evidence that no Iraq al-Qaida link existed in 2001-2003 and negligible credible evidence to establish this claim, most people (including several republicans I know) have come to the conclusion that the administration knows what it is saying isn't true, but continues to say it because this bogus assertion benefits them (i.e. they are lying).

3. You state "But it appears, though still not yet conclusively, that Hussein did not have the stockpiles of WMD"

Facts: The US military been in Iraq for almost 5 years. The US military and US intelligence has turned over a large part of the country and found no WMDs. The US military and US intelligence has interviewed/interrogated a large swath of Hussein's military machine who corroborate that Saddam Hussein had no WMDs when we invaded Iraq in 2003. Even the commander in chief now admits that there were no WMDs in Iraq in 2003. To repeat his 12/18/2005 statement (just want to make sure you read this)

If your view of conclusive is to turn over every inch of soil in Iraq and not find any old WMD caches, I'll happily buy you a couple of shovels at Home Depot and provide you transportation to the country so you can do so. However, I don't think you'll need to do this so that others accept beyond any reasonable doubt that Iraq had no WMDs in 2001-2003. The facts speak for themselves.

Cheers

Adam

I guess we need to look at this in a more relaxed light. I am coming around to seeing what is happening here. The HC will not be Fassel in my opinion. That is Danny's gift to the fans. As great as he has been as a DC, GW was not a great or even a good HC in Buffalo. These hires show a great deal of thought has been given to what Danny and Vinny want. I am guessing that Jim Mora Jr. would have gotten the job if he wanted it and thus that is where Jim Zorn's name came from. The new coach will be someone we have not heard about yet. It will make sense and it will be fine.

Hail to the Redskins

Alan-Our D has been excellant, I'm not doubting that. I'm just trying to say that I don't get all the uproar over not hiring Williams as HC. It's a big difference from DC to HC. Blache played a huge roll in our D as well and keeping him is a good move IMO. Am I thrilled about Fassel possibly being HC? No. However, his HC record is a lot better than Williams was at Buffalo.

I'm a little surprised at Gregg Williams not being in the running. Al Saunders i do understand. He undercut Don Coryell in San Diego 22 years ago, and sort of played along with forcing Don Coryell out.

Unbelievable, this should have been wrapped up a week ago with Williams being named head coach. Now the Redskins will be luckly to reach 8-8. No playoffs next year, and probably no Super Bowl for a long time. Snyder, this was such an easy decision and you blew it. How the hell did you make your money? Someone else must have called the shots because you have proved time and again that you are an idiot. If Williams and Cerrato did not get along, fire Cerrato. What Snyder needs is someone with Cerrato's position but who will have the guts to tell Danny "just shut up and write this check." Unfortunately, Snyder is not that kind of owner and will never do that. I'm not a big fan of southern tradition, but maybe it's time for fans to grab the pitchforks and run The Danny out of town.

On to the Capitals and Wizards who might make some accomplishments in the near future. The Redskins will be caught in a cycle of mediocrity for a long time.

Fassel HC record: 58-53-1

Why is everyone up in arms here? GW was clearly not up the job in Buffalo and yes, his defenses have been a big part in the many second half meltdowns over the past few years. At least with Fassel we get the likelihood of 8-8 and the occasional 9-7 seasons, any maybe a playoff berth.

Posted by: Down777866 | January 26, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

I can't believe the venom and ignorance that's spewing from this blog. It almost makes me not want to participate.

Saunders was a failure here. Regardless of whether it was Gibbs, Williams, Cowher, or anyone else it was unlikely he'd have been back. That's not Snyder's fault. That's squarely on Gibbs.

Williams was good when he was good, but he was bad when he was bad. Doesn't anyone remember the previous year? Didn't anyone watch him roll over and die during the Patriot's game? And how does ANYONE have respect for the man who kept the 10 man defense tribute a secret from Joe Gibbs. If nothing else, Gibbs deserves respect, and that was a slap in his face. Williams was NOT the second coming.

Blache IS consistency. He'll keep largely the same defense, and probably almost all the same players. In my opinion, there is no loss at the defensive coordinator position.

Zorn is an unknown, but he comes highly respected, and Seattle fought to keep him. He's a QB guy, and Soup needs that. I think it's a great hire.

I don't know why we don't have a head coach yet. But so what? It's been a bumpy process, but we're doing ok so far.

Remember none of this was Snyder's fault. This was Gibbs bailing out and blindsiding Snyder and everyone.

And you can talk all you want about consistency. If Snyder and Williams are oil and water, that trumps the idea of trying to keep Gibbs hand-picked successor. Snyder was wise to look past the obvious choice and find someone he CAN work with for the long haul.

All this temper-tantrum name calling and baseless apocalyptic pants-wetting is embarrassing. Especially those of you who want to give up season tickets or boycott games. It makes me sad that the legendary Wasington Redskins Fan Base is reduced to this.

WELCOME ABOARD Zorn, and CONGRATULATIONS Blache and Cerrato. Ignore these idiotic fans. The rest of us are behind you, and expect great things from you. You'll hear us boo if you lose, but until then we got your back.

And yeah the good thing about this is now I can spend all my sports dollars on my new favorite team....one that is owned by it's fans. The Green Bay Packers. Come on everyone Join Me!

But at the very least stop buy Skins Merch, give back your tickets and all that good stuff. If you really feel that strongly about the decision. But it has to be a concerted effort for it to work and send a message.

Myself. I stopped buying Skins stuff a while ago. Last Skins item I purchased was a hat the year before Gibbs came back for the second time.

All that said I've been a skins fan since 1980...so I'd be lying if I said I was just going to turn it off and stop paying attention, even hoping for Blanch and Zorn to yet again...maybe be the solution....but the passion I once had is gone. Will I give Snyder one more cent of my money...not till one of those shiny football trophies he likes to display all the time, is actually one he earned.

But yet again we shall see.

Posted by: rbfett | January 26, 2008 2:33 PM | Report abuse

However, his HC record is a lot better than Williams was at Buffalo.

I'm so tired of hearing this bogus comparison... because it ignores the fact Fassel ended 4-12 and was fired in 2003. It ignores that he was fired again 2 years later as OC in 2006. It ignores the fact that he was passed over for OC in KC and has been out of the NFL since Oct 06. NOBODY WANTS HIS ASS! Why did Snyder want him in 2004 (before he got fired a second time) and now? Gibbs sure as hell didn't want him!

It ignores the fact that HOF Coach Gibbs handpicked Williams as his DC. It ignores the fact that Gibbs has groomed Williams for 4 years in his Associate HC position. It ignores the fact the Gibbs endorsed Williams as his successor. It ignores the fact that Williams has been with the Skins for 4 years and knows our personnel very, very well (which he could certainly use against us should he land with another NFC East team).

Gibbs is a Hall of Fame coach, who has taken the Skins to the playoffs twice in the past 3 years. His game has always been his people-skills. If Gibbs thinks Williams can do a good job, I'd say he's more credible than anyone else making comments about it.

And I have no doubt Williams will be a HC in the NFL again. Besides making the defenst the strength of the Skins, most people will respect a Gibbs endorsement.

Who's endorsing Fassel?

Guys and Dolls:

The really sad thing about this turn of events at Redskins Park is that whoever the HC turns out to be, this team will be blown up. That means another two years of football hell until Danny gets tired of it and starts all over again.

What self-respecting HC would come into a situation where Vinny the Pooh has already been elevated to Supreme Leader Of All Things Football, and his OC and DC have already been named? Oh, I don't know: maybe some has-been color guy who hasn't had a job offer since the Clinton administration, who is desperate enough to take this job, any job under the dynamic duo of Snyder and Cerrato, and who will sit quietly in the corner while Napoleon and his henchman hatch their brilliant football schemes.

Maybe Snyder is going for the big splash and has been secretely talking to Cowher behind the scenes. Oh really? And you seriously think Cowher is going to come into a situation as described above with no say as to the organization or his assistants? I doubt it, but then I have always been a cynic. Nope. Got to be Fassel.

Just because Blache got promoted....doesn't mean that defensive staff is staying yet.

If the redskins go with the Giants DC.....the D staff could easily change.

Are there any rumors on which coaches are being re-signed ???

Posted by: joeallen5 | January 26, 2008 2:47 PM | Report abuse

This is worse case scenario for the Skins. Ugh. And that whole flap about trying to drag Greg Williams name through the mud. I believe that's exactly what Vinny tried to do. What self respecting coach is going to come to Washington and have Dannyboy and BB Vinny say "ok well we've hired your offensive and defensive coaches for you now go out there and do what we tell you" ugh. No players will restructure their contracts to fit the cap. All free agents are gone. We'll see a mass exodus of talent. ugh. Thanks a bunch Dannyboy!

Posted by: Jaymand | January 26, 2008 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Great. Another 2-3 years breaking in a new staff, retooling the roster and having players get used to a new system. I would say that throwing out progress and starting fresh is ok as long as you don't do it every three years. We aren't going to make the payoffs in the next decade.

Posted by: pmaddeng | January 26, 2008 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Blache sounds like continuity to me. He's more than up to the job. What is so WRONG about Snyder not choosing Williams? He chose Gibbs and you LOVED that right? Did you love that 2nd pick for Brunell? How about Baily and another 2nd for Portis? Or those picks for the S.F. wide reciever who will be gone. How about the two 2nd rounders for that running back last year? All Gibbs moves. Yet you all love Gibbs. Rabid fans are stupid. Just ask Giant fans who were clamoring for Caughlin's head early this year. Gibbs was a failure by any HOF standard. It won't take much to do better.

Posted by: dsilvert | January 26, 2008 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Also....why is anyone really feeling bad for Williams....remember he gets a million bucks for no trouble at all.

There was always the very real possibility he would not be Gibbs' successor...which is why that clause was in his contract....

I think he'll be pretty happy about that......

Posted by: goosedude | January 26, 2008 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Daniel Snyder has brought nothing but shame and disgrace to this once proud and successful franchise. He knows absolutely nothing about football and neither does his no-talent assclown sidekick Cerrato. Snyder knows a lot about marketing and how to throw his fortune around but knows nothing about football. This will be a mediocre 8-8 football team for another 10 years. Thanks for ruining any hopes that I or any other dedicated Redskins fan once had for a championship.

Daniel Snyder is poison for this organization and the NFL as a whole.

I'm happy that Greg Blache is our new DC. He has done really good work, particularly this, with our d-line. That unit is probably the skins thinnest unit yet this unit has seen the development of Carter, Montgomery, and Goltson.

"Now we need to find viable replacements for basically our entire secondary + Rogers and McIntosh (until they are ready to return) and our aging OL, and a DE."

The Redskins are cap strapped, how do replace anyone?

The Redskins are going to start asking players to make adjustments to thier salaries and they are going to say "no."

Now you have more holes to fill and you just let go both your OC and DC.

This team is going to be a mess next year.

"What world do you live in that you think every player would return?"

You sound like Leprechaun Danny with his toy. Go away little boy. :P

Posted by: Jaymand | January 26, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

hey there jvwright - 15 years of losing wears on a fan. Who cannot understand the frustration? Snyder and co need to remmeber that in todays day and age there are many more things than the local nfl franchise to spend our hard earned time and $$'s on. The team needs to turn it around or risk losing more fans to apathy and other distractions.

Posted by: RhumbLine | January 26, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Another good thing is that now I have no expectations for the following season.

Are these guys just going to be the right formula, and just magically get the job done against all odds?

Is Snyder just hiring a throw a way crew for a throw away season so he can get who he really covets: Bill Cowher?

Will the structure that maybe kept with Blanch staying on, and getting some different minds in there that will help utilze the weapons the team already has. Portis, Moss Cooley..etc..

Or will the most likely thing happen with this much upheaval, and the team be lucky to win 5.

We don't really know. Just how it is in the NFL too many variables...and when you add more your odds go down. As fans we have to I guess hope for the best, but in my mind my expectations have gone from another playoff run to I would be quite satisfied with any more than 5 wins next season.

And that's nice...it takes some of the pressure and off...Thanks Danny.

Gosh I really can't stand Snyder, ruining the team! Gregg was and still should be the man for the job, endorsed by Joe Gibbs himself, what more could you ask for Danny?

Posted by: kris020103 | January 26, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

I am stunned. Completely taken back by this. However, as I soak this all in , I have to say I do like the choices for OC (Zorn) and DC (Blache). It's just this departure of Williams is extremely disappointing! My thoughts were that Danny would try at least Williams for one year as HC, and if he doesn't work out, he could go for Cowher.

Now, I can only hope they snag someone other than Fossel. I just don't see him as a fit here. And I do hope they hold on to a majority of the current staff. In fact, with a OC and DC in place, it's hard to see a former head coach in the mix. Consider that a retread coach would want his own guys, whereas an up and coming coach would adapt more easily with a current staff.

With that in mind, I'm personally intrigued by Spagnuolo, who prior to the Giants was with the Eagles and has head coaching experience in NFL Europe. Good pedigree. He also has tie with the Redskins, going back to 1983.

Does Snyder travel with personal security? I would seriously be concerned if I were him. I enjoy(ed) the Skins and find the off-season drama entertaining, but it is obvious that he has crossed the line.

Anything short of Cowher, Russ Grimm, or McDaniel as head coach and I think there are going to be some crack pots who have had enough tracking down Danny and Vinny.

It's sad that the Skins franchise has come to this and the amazing thing is Gibbs had dug Danny out of the hole he was in and now he just fell into a deep well. He will never recover...

Posted by: isnadd | January 26, 2008 2:57 PM | Report abuse

The only way for us fans to really show Danny how we feel is to hit him in the pocket book. I don't know if Redskin fans have the guts to pull it off, but a total boycott of buying anything Redskin, INCLUDING season ticket payments, would hurt in a way that even that cocky little SOB couldn't ignore. Just imagine what a powerful statement it would be if the stands were half empty for the opening game next season! Let's show him that the real "owners" of any professional team are the fans that spend the bucks. What do you say people, can we do it, or do we just sit back and keep complaining while Dan and Vinny destroy our favorite team?

Posted by: clfrdj | January 26, 2008 2:57 PM | Report abuse

I guess we have all forgotten that the season ended for us Jan 5th. Joe Gibbs resigned on Jan 8th. Today is Jan 26th. Good on Danny for taking some time with this. Good on Danny for not jumping on the first horse that came along. Good on Danny for not doing this process in the media aka Arthur Blank. There is no rush to name a HC and I believe Danny already knows who that is and it is not Fassel. We all know that if Danny wanted Fassel he would be the HC now.

It is time to be a Redskin fan. Support this team and give the new HC whoever that will be a chance. If you all love the Redskins as you say you do then be calm and let the new HC play a few games.

Just a few comments from a concerned, liflong Skins fan(since the moment of conception): Not sure how you could assume that there are many coaches that would be willing to take the Head Coaching job if they are not able to select their own coordinators. Do you think a coach from an orginzation such as the Patriots(Josh McDaniels for instance) would be willing to take on such a situation? Spagnoulo sounds like a credible candidate, but again, why would he take the job if he cannot select his own coordinators, or have any say in the structure of this team?

Can you please explain to me why Williams could not have been given 1 season to keep this team moving forward? If, after that 1 season, things did not work out, then you blow it up and start over. There are no other teams looking for Head Coaches now, so there would have been no competition for the coaches one would interview for the position. I just don't understand why you decided to flush all of Gibbs work over the past 4 years down the toilet(and I don't mean that this team, as it is, was absolutely on the way to a Super Bowl, but the TEAM chemistry built over the last 2 years WAS undeniable). And now that is all gone.

Zorn and Blache may be fine coaches, with great futures ahead of them with the Redskins, but they still would have been there next year too. And Fassel? Why do you think you are the only one in the league who thinks he is a worthwhile candidate for the HC position? He was with Billick because noone else even wanted him on their staff anymore, and Billick WAS a longtime friend(they no longer speak to each other by the way).

I am sure I will not receive a reply to this email, but I at least had my say.

I will ALWAYS be a Skins fan, but I am NOT happy about it right now.

Hail Skins!

This was mine, c' mon everybody, send it in. It won't matter, but I DO feel a little better.

As much as I hate to say it, Joe Gibbs has to take some of the blame for this current atrocity. Let's face it, the man hung the team out to dry, pure and simple. I'm not saying that Joe did not have legitimate motives, but the guy left the team in the hands of a madman and has to take some of the blame for everything that has happened since. His continued failure to admonish that little Napolean who owns the team is unimaginable. How could he do this to Gregg Williams and the rest of the team?

@rmcazz.....

NOw you are getting it....Everyone thinks this team was not going to be overhauled magically if Williams was made coach.

Alot of Big Money players entering late years of their contracts (Portis, Springs for example).

Let's break it down:

QB: Campbell is the future....Collins won't have to be extended a huge contract now that Saunders is gone. Brunell Gone too. Who will the backup be?? Leftwich wants to come home......

WR: The whole lot could be scrapped save for Randle El....maybe Moss is safe. The rest.....expendable

RB: Portis - HUGE Contract Value this year....no renegotiaion = Trade or release. Betts was resigned IMO to be the future rock holder. Anyone think the SKINS would trade up to the PATS spot to grab a RB to pair with a young QB (and a young FA WR....cough...FITZGERALD)

OL: We have depth due to the younguns playing...but lets be honest SAMUELS, JANSEN, THOMAS, RABACH...are not young.

TE/HB: Cooley is one of the best...Yoder (if he improves his hands).....we are set for awhile.

DEFENSE

DL: Good Young Players who got lots of playing time. DANIELS is gone. Griffin good for a couple more years. GOLSTON, MONTGOMERY, CARTER are the real future.

LB: McINTOSH loss HURTS.....ALOT. Do we draft or pickup a placeholder?? Are Blades & K. Campbell up to the task?

Secondary: Whole thing could be blown up because of Taylor's loss, Rogers' injury, and Springs' Contract Hit. I expect Springs to be gone, Skins to make a run at Asante Samuel......or they will draft a CB. Taylor's position....how do you fill that??

Why doesn't Dan Snyder appoint himself head coach? The two guys who are running the offense and defense are head coach caliber already so they don't need a real football guy above them. That way, Dan will be general manager as at present and head coach as well. If he needs any football information or expertise, there are plenty of football publications and web sites around to provide it. Seriously, for the long term this would probably work out best for the team.

I will go to the games.
I will buy Skins merchandise.
I will support the team as a fan.
All these haters might have to eat their words if the Skins kick ass next year or the following year.
I will not hate on Snyder as you all have. It's his money and his team and he's trying to make it a winner again. Gibbs retiring gave him every reason to reevaluate the coaching staff and I support it.
House cleaning was needed.
Saunders offense play calling was inconsistent, Greg Williams "D" broke down in the 2nd half way too many times this season.
How about our lost draft picks for TJ Duckett who is no longer with us, how about Brandon Lloyd, Adam Archuleta...etc.

I say bring back Lavar Arrington...he's the man who was wronged by Greg Williams in the worst way.

I submit to the people of the Redskins Insider that Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins, be here forth called "The Architect," in honor of his glaring similarities to the character from "The Matrix: Reloaded."

I think this quote from the Architect is appropriate for what Daniel Snyder has done again:

"Denial is the most predictable of all human responses, but rest assured, this will be the 6th time we have destroyed [the team], and we have become exceedingly efficient at it..."

Ladies and gentlemen, the sky is not falling. Zorn and Blatche are very respected coaches and will probably do just fine. I am personally hoping they will contact Russ Grimm and I have been hoping for that since the day Gibbs resigned.
Gregg Williams is NOT such an outstanding choice as head coach and never was. He comes with substantial risk based on his Buffalo tenure.
Lastly, Jim Fassel is not a bad choice. He did quite well in NY (13 games over .500) until his last season distorted his overall record. He was an extremely well respected Offensive Coordinator prior to his days in NY. Blow off his Baltimore stint as Billick was tying his hands there and the offensive talent was marginal at best.

Gregg Williams paid his dues, had the support of players and fans, and deserved a shot to be HC. None of the candidates remaining have demonstrated clear advantages over Williams. Why, oh why? The suffering of 'Skins fans everywhere continues...

I don't think there has ever been a more highlighted moment of utter stupidity in the history of the Redskin's organization. Snyder has turned the once proud, winning stature of the Washington Redskins into a travesty based more on the fact the Redskins are the highest revenue team in the NFL. You want to be a winner Snyder? Fire that idiot Cerrato, model your team after the mold of the Pittsburgh Steelers, look what the Green Bay Packers did with far fewer stars this year, are you kidding me and the rest of the lifelong Redskin's faithful. You're not concerned with your players, your coaches, the fans or anything else other than the bottom line in dollars. You have spent a long time and alot of money making yourself look like you're clueless in the professional game of football and have softened our once proud Redskin team in the process, why would anyone in their right mind want to play for the Redskins for any reason other than money. A smart and savvy money guy like you sure has wasted alot of it on underachievers. Fire Ceratto, hire a GM, be reasonable with the money as it's obvious to all of us that it doesn't buy championships. Lastly stuff that incredible ego of yours someplace where the rest of us don't have to gag on it. Maybe then the Redskins will return to their rightful place among the NFL elite. I love the Redskins, always have, and always will, but you are the demigod. Get a clue and spare us all this agony!

That means a great level of continuity on D. I am warily optimistic about Zorn (since he's already in and we can't bring Al back) but it's really a wait and see approach with him. Let's hope since he's in that Danny gives him the time to implement (Danny's track record is not good here) I still hate Snyder for this crap but I love the Redskins (Danny is NOT the Redskins no matter how much he thinks he is) and will pray for all of us.

Its one thing to name an offensive coordinator ahead of time like the Cowboys did but how do you explain to your head coach that he basically has no say in who his coaches will be?? Is there any remote possibility that Blache could get a shot at the HC position. I know most have not considered this but at this point I'm thinking that Danny needs to find a way to limit the damage. Blache is the only remaining coach on our staff that has both experience (he was a d-coordinator with the Bears I believe)and the respect of our players and with Saunders and Williams out of the picture we need to find a way to keep this team together. Regardless of what happens my loyalty to this franchise has taken a major hit..I can't believe that Danny and Vinny have been so unprofessional during this process. There is a right way and wrong way to conduct a coaching search and Danny has done just about everything the wrong way. Going in another direction is one thing but lying to all the fans, current coaching staff and bad mouthing one of the top canidates shows ust how selfish and power hungry Snyder is!!

The reality of this news just depresses me.

I expect a huge public relations juggernaut to start pumping out a lot of misinformation. You will hear things like:
a. We are all for continuity.
b. Williams left entirely on his own accord.
c. Joe Gibbs endorses our choices for coordinators and he is enthusiastic about our head coach to be named later.
d. In time you will all understand the "process" that we went through and you will see the logic of it.
e. Dan Snyder remains committed to making the Redskins into the best organization in the NFL.
f. We appreciate all the loyal support given by our fans during this time of transition. Dan Snyder wants to thank each and every one of you and wants to remind you that we are all in this together.

I could go on making this stuff up but it is just to easy to see the upcoming propaganda.

So, Danny & Vinny have assembled the corps of assistant coaches, but there is no head coach?! That should tell any incoming head coach who will REALLY be running the Redskins and be an indication of how little power any new head coach will have. Who would want to be head coach under such circumstances? Sycophants only need apply!

Well, once again Jerk Snyder and his sidekick Dunce Cerrato have stepped one their peckers!

They hire good players but the players are lousy. They fire the players who go on to become superstars elsewhere. In the playoffs several years ago most of the playoff quarterbacks were former Redskins!

There hasn't been a decent team since that jerk took over! In fact the only constants in this loser team in Snyder and Cerrato. But Dufus Danny doesn't care. He's laughing all the way to the bank!

Congratulations, Stupid. You just pissed off your best opportunity for a winning season!

I'm a woman and a big sports fan. I must say that I thought when I left Michigan I would not see an NFL owner that resembled the Lions owner. Was I wrong? Mr. Snyder doesn't seem to know jack about football, and he will not hire people with football knowledge to help run the team. What good coach worth his salt would take a job where all the assistants have been hired by the owner? That shows me that the new coach will be merely a figurehead while Dan Snyder and Vinnie Cerrato will really be running things behind the scenes. And with their track record, that is a scary thought. Again...I thought the Lions owner (William Clay Ford) was the worst in the NFL, along with Al Davis. Dan Snyder will be right there in the running for laughingstock of the NFL if he continues with his foolishness. It's a shame that the owner can't be fired or traded. All you can do is hope that they come to their senses and hire SOMEONE ELSE to run the team, period.

Since Snyder bought the team he's been able to more then double the team's value by selling the DC fans a fantasy. The fantasy is always 'this is the year!' But if you look back, it's been a joke, with virtually no post season appearances, and the couple times they got to a wild card spot they were quickly knocked out. There hasn't been a serious Redskins team since Joe Gibb's original tenure. Now that Joe is gone, again, the charade is finally completely over. There's no super star coach out there - maybe this is good news - maybe it means Snyder will actually try to build a REAL team and not a fantasy team. But if I was going to bet on it, I'd say Snyder won't change a thing. Maybe this next year will be the year of reality, not for Snyder, but for the Skins fans: The Redskins are not serious contenders for a championship and won't be for a long long time.

Goosedude, the one thing you fail to realize is that all those players who had large cap numbers would have either renogotiated their contracts or take a small pay cut if they had coach like Williams...someone that has been with them through the toughest part of their careers. People forget just how important respect and loyalty is in regards to the way players feel towars their coaches. The first goal of any coaching staff is to earn the respect of the players..so they will follow and believe in the system they use. Williams and Saunders already had this and that loyalty translates into players making sacrifices salary wise because they have such a close bond with the staff. Thats probably goe now unless they promote to head coach. Btw, I think you are completely off base wanting to release or trade Portis, players like him just don't grow on trees. When you consider that we have not had great offensive lines and/or one of most horrible Qb's in Mark Brunell (Portis rushed for almost 3000 yards in his first two years consistently facing 8-9 in the box because no one respected Brunell) Portis' numbers were great. Not too mention that he is a complete back who knocks the garbage out of anyone who blitzes ...I can't see why you would realese. Give him a legit healthy line and good Qb and you will see amazing things!!

I'm not saying that Joe did not have legitimate motives, but the guy left the team in the hands of a madman and has to take some of the blame for everything that has happened since. His continued failure to admonish that little Napolean who owns the team is unimaginable. How could he do this to Gregg Williams and the rest of the team?"

WRONG. Gibbs is a free man, employed at will and can do whatever he wants. A life and family is more important than a job -- especially when you don't need the money.

The owner is ultimately responsible for this one.

Well, I never cease to be amazed by "little Danny". I had high hopes that given the horrors of Sean Taylor's murder and the subsequent exemplary leadership shown by Gibbs/Williams/Saunders and the rest of the coaching staff in those difficult times, had perhaps taught him some humility and patience, but it's apparent that it hasn't. What a moron he consistently proves himself to be regarding this franchise. As a season ticket holder, I wish that Danny would just sell the team and go play his ego games elsewhere. It's appalling what he's done and Sally Jenkins hit the nail right on the head in today's column. The fact that Jim Fassel is seriously being considered as the next coach is proof of the sheer lunacy we have at the ownership level? Can we have an intervention here.... It's obvious that we need one!

All the best to Gregg Williams, who clearly should have been the Redskins head coach.

Most of us care far more about process than product. From that vantage point, the way that this whole thing was handled--from stringing along GW to trying to sell the fans that "continuity" bill of goods--is deplorable, sickening, and horribly unprofessional. Williams deserved a shot; I think he learned a lot more from Gibbs than did Snyder.

I hope Williams makes Snyder look like a complete fool somehow--he actually already has. What is it in this world that even allows self-absorbed, self-absolved SHPOS like Snyder to have money? Sadly, he'll never, ever get it until we, the fans (short for fanatics) divest and he loses money.

I thought Gibbs was marginally lucid, but even he couldn't bring any semblance of normalcy to the organization. . .not with the idiot twins--Jack and A**--running the show. I'm out until this guy goes. Where do I turn in my fan club card. I suspect he'll hire a minority coach or Russ Grimm; the media and fans might let up a bit then.

I say let's hasten the demise of the franchise; we're well on the way. Only when it crumbles will Snyder sell it and go away.

Snyder is an idiot. Williams' star is on the rise and he basically fell into our lap. The defense has been the only reason we stayed in many games. Without Williams, or a consistent offense, the team is going to lose all those close games against bad teams like the Dolphins, Jets and Bills.

Way back in there somewhere, somebody -- probably in jest -- included The Danny as one of the potential head coaches. I'll bet Dannyboy ACTUALLY BELIEVES HE COULD DO IT. What a complete putz. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't head coaches hire -- or at least have major input in -- their own assistants? Danny has shown the coaching fraternity that he doesn't respect them. Who WOULD take this freaking job? Only someone desperate for their first or another head coaching job.

I'm with the "boycott the first home game" folks. Don't turn in your tickets. Don't give them away. Stay home and let the world see a stadium of empty seats. If you don't renew your tickets that greedy little schmuck just sells them somebody else on the 80,000-plus waiting list. Take the one-game $$ hit and make a statement. I will.

Do you really think the main reason the Patriots offense is so great is b/c Josh McDaniels is an offensive genius? Ever give any thought to the pieces he's got to work with (Brady, Maroney, Moss, Welker, Faulk, Stallworth, Light, Mankins, etc.)?

I don't know if Gregg Williams was our HC answer, but to all you players hating on him b/c of his HC record with the Bills (JFein, homer0890, suzannepdc, redskins1, heatmiser, rich20ssu, etc.), remember Bill Belichick had a losing record during 5 seasons with the Browns as HC. After Cleveland, BB became an assistant coach again, and then moved on to NE back as HC and is now arguably the best HC in NFL today, if not all-time.

Snyder seems to be the NFL version of Steinbrenner. The Yankees were only successful under his reign when he finally realized the benefits of backing off and letting Management due their job. Unfortunately for the Redskins their is no management with the absence of a GM. Jack Kent Cooke must be turning over in his grave. This team has gone from Elite status to Arizona Cardinals/Detroit Lions status under Snyder's reign. What a joke!

@roby3743

I'm not saying the REDSKINS should get rid of PORTIS....he is a great player and a good guy.

But his contract is entering the portion of late year mega-escalating salaray #s. That's the way the Redskins structure alot of their FA contracts.......Big signing bonus....low Annual salaries the 1st 3 years.....BIG escalation year 4+.

In his interviews even he admitted that his contract would need to be renegotiated if he was to stay.

And those are the 2 really big questions: Portis' & Springs' Big Contracts....do you keep them or do you cut/trade them (particularly in Springs' case as he wouldn't renegotiate and his salary is HUGE).

Also...you have to ask which would you rather have a GOOD SOLID OL with a handful of unproven RBs or a GOOD RB with no OL??

Seems the GIANTS (and even the PACKERS) did ok with Option A this year...see Ahmad Bradshaw, Ryan Grant....

All the emotional and knee jerk reactions aside, there is a sadness to this situation that mystifies everyone. I am a devout redskins fan, i have wasted a lot of time cheering for this team, players come and go, loyalties remain. What do we get out of it, nothing really. However, the emotions and joy received when the team does well is a euphoria unlike anything. This past season, I, just like many of you felt the magic, the bond that our team created beyond being a normal sprts franchise. We were all much more emotionally invested in this, along with the players and coaches. They came together, one of the most underrated aspects of success is chemistry. That was the foundation that is being ruined here. The players and the coaches deserved to continue for another year, the fans deserved them to continue.

Being on the cusp and not having the chance is the most dishearning part. For example, how close was Coughlin to being fired last year? Now look, there is something to be said for continuity, imagine Campbell in Saunders offense next year, with what he learned from collins the last 5 games, the defense, young and spirited ready to play with the passion that ignited them all year.

And now..............

I am not going to boycott the team, but I will no longer live and die my emotions with them. Life goes on, and that has been demostrated by the ownership, it is hard to have negative feelings fo someone who handled Taylor's death with Class, but he has ripped the communities trust with what has happened this past month, even coach joe has, who has his ear should have been wiser as to the effects his resignation will have, alas, the memory of this year will fade, life goes on, and williams will succeed, unfortunately, it won't be here in which we all had visioned as little as a few weeks ago. Even Saunders offense, as complicated as it was, I trusted and believed in.....

3 hours a week, 16 times a year is all the attention this team will get from me now on, thats all that it deserves after this....

I am done with Snyder and the Redskins, this is no longer the Redskins team I loved. This is SNyderville and it is a 3 ring circus. Am turning in my tickets and don't give a damn if there are 80,000 people waiting to pick them up - take them, $5000 plus dollars to watch fossil FOSSIL!. (whom I have hated as a giant coach for years). $5000 to support an organization who would treat Greg Williams, who has done a great job for them like a piece of crap, $5000 to support a organization with no class - NO THANK YOU

This team has become the Deadskins to me.

I am looking for another team and and considering Jacksonville, a good organization, a good coach, a good team and possibly Greg Williams as DC. Better than the Ravens or Giants or Eagles.

Thanks Joe, Riggo, Darryl, Art, Gary, Joe Jacobi, Doug, Sonny,Sean,Ernest,Russ,Clint, Charles, Dexter and many others I cannot name right now, it was a great ride. But all things come to an end. And it is over.

For all the fans worried about Williams' Buffalo record, remember that Belichik flamed out in Cleveland as a HC before taking over the Pats. Just because it didn't work out in Buffalo doesn't mean he hadn't learned from Gibbs how to improve and become a successful HC. If Williams was given the HC, how do we know Blatche wouldn't be the DC anyway? So we'd be right where we are now defensively, but with a HC that the players love and respect, instead of this mess. For Snyder, you just don't treat your employees this way. How many of us would want to be treated by our company the way Snyder is treating his employees, and still want to work for that company? And if Gibbs was in on all this, why would he ask Williams to stay in the race if he knew Snyder didn't want him? It goes against everything we've seen from Gibbs over the last 28 years. Gibbs is being kept in the dark and being asked to keep a lifeline afloat to the players to keep from an all-out revolt. Gibbs should wash his hands from all this. And I don't buy the argument that poor Snyder got caught off-guard on this. We all knew Gibbs wasn't ging to stay beyond the 5 years anyway - Snyder should have been working on a contingency plan long before this. The primary reason Gibbs came back was to rebuild the culture and structure of the organization to a winning group. All that is being thrown out in a couple of weeks as the rest of the NFL laughs at us. The new coach will only be a figurehead, since he won't have final say on the roster (Cerrato) or the offense (Zorn - good move) or the defense (Blatche - again good move). Not sure how this group will all work out, but it's certain that "As the Redskins Turn" will continue........

Here's the e:mail I just sent to Napoleon Snyder, via the Skins official web site. I hope all fans do something similar:

Well, Mr. Snyder, you've managed to do it. After nearly 40 years of rooting for this team, today I resign as a lifelong fan. You have brought nothing but misery and shame to this once-great franchise ever since you bought the team. And, as long as you are the owner, the Skins will NEVER be successful on the field. I wish all season ticket holders would open their eyes and turn in their tickets. That is the only thing that would get your attention.
I will never root against the Skins, but I am no longer going to waste my weekends rooting for them.
This latest debacle and the disgusting and insulting way in which you have treated Saunders and Williams is absolutely the last straw for me.
And shame on Joe Gibbs, too, for his complicity in this disgusting display of one owner's arrogance and stupidity.
Mr. Snyder, today you proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are and always will be a "small man".

We are now the LA Raiders of the East. At least the Raiders have an excuse....Al Davis is a crazy, senile old man. Dan Snyder just doesnt realize how much he doesnt know. He doesnt know whether to s**t or wind his Rolex. DC fans, its time to vote with your wallet. Dont renew your tickets, dont buy his merchandise, dont go to his games. He is single handedly ruining one of the most storied franchises in the NFL. The 3 words he hates to hear must be yelled out loudly & proudly..

Anyone ever notice the similarity between the movie character Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in Gladiator and the real life Redskins owner Danny Snyder? They are both ... short, abusive with their power, insecure, immature and wish they were the true Caesar.
Pretty much fits the picture doesn't it? Although FedEx field isn't much of a Coliseum is it?

I've been rooting for the 'Skins since the early 1970s, and I won't stop caring for them just because the current owner is an idiot, a liar (continuity? firing Gibbs' two hand-picked coordinators in the most classless ways imaginable?) or worse. Keeping Blache as def. coordinator is smart though I had always assumed that Williams would do the same (make Blache def. coordinator) if he had been named head coach.

I'll be curious how many would-be free agents will flee the nest now. I can't see Collins re-signing now. With so many players (on both sides of the ball) who recommended and spoke in favor of Williams as head coach, how many are going to stay now that he's been fired altogether? Who would want to re-up with this circus? Who would believe anything Snyder/Cerrato promised them? :p

I'll still root for them though. I just feel sorry for the players and what's left of the coaching staff. Various sports news sites are running items about Williams and Saunders being fired now.

Posted by: geogill | January 26, 2008 4:11 PM | Report abuse

Everyone just take a deep breath here for a second. Williams was a terrible coach in Buffalo...last one season and was run out of town on a rail. As for Saunders, well, I don't have to tell you that the offense was not exactly the strength of the team. Yes, the defense was good, but they have great players on that side of the ball and we all know that good coordinators do not necessarily make good head coaches. Of course the players wanted a promotion from within because that way they know where they stand and don't have to learn a whole new system. So with a new system and coaches next year may be a little tough. If things are not any better in 2009, then start to panic!

Dan Snyder is a scam, a liar and a no good S.O.B. I hope that piece of crap gets what's coming to him. I have heard that all of his neighbors in Potomac, MD hate his guts as well and a lot of his employees that work for him hate him with a passion. Now you can add the Redskins fan base, the Redskins players along with most coaches around the league to that list. This guy, for all of the money he has, doesn't have one bit of class to save his life. I hope that during every home game we have next year, all fans in unison start the chant of "FU Snyder" or a "Sell the Team" chant. I think upon hearing these chants during every game he will be really embarassed and get pissed and thus should be the goal of every Redskins fans world wide.

I think this is excellent. I'm sorry, but I was never one who wanted Gregg Williams to be the Head Coach of the Redskins. He needs to go elsewhere, for the benefit of both the Redskins and for Williams. I don't trust the ability of Williams to lead a team, and I think it's best to take time and find a good head coach, not just one that the fans want. Now, whether Snyder can or will do that, I am not sure, but I say let's give him the chance.

Ok, ok. i've read the other comments and see one train of thought no one has mentioned. i think dan snyder is a dallas cowboy fan and just bought our wonderful 'skins to help make sure dallas wins the division. this would explain his actions in that he takes every correct direction and simply does the opposite.

were we only so lucky that on janury 20th 2009 he would head to texas on the jet flying W. home.

Ok, Kathy, I know you and many others are upset, but what do you mean by "you don't treat people the way Snyder has treated Williams"? Williams was fired. He got fired in Buffalo as well. NFL is a tough business and all these coaches know this. I'm not defending Snyder by any stretch, but I am saying that this situation is not as bad as some make it out to be. It only makes sense to try to get the best coaches to come to Washington and if that takes some time then so be it.

Every time I see Jason La Canfora's smilling face at the top of his columns I want to puke.

He is the purveyor of news from the Redskins, the voice of the team on the WaPo online and gears his columns to promote the viewpoints of Snyder, Cerrato and Jason Campbell - not to promote the well-being of the team.

It's truly amazing to me that Gibbs grooms two assistants to take over when he leaves and both end up getting fired by the Boy King and the Boy Wonder less than two weeks after he resigns as head coach.

Take this fist and shove it up your arse Danny Boy, I'm truly sick of your arse and want to kick your arse so hard that you get hemorrhoids the rest of your natural born life.

God told Joe Gibbs to be with his family.

The Redskins are not his family, especially when you have an self-centered owner who knows NOTHING ABOUT LEADING A TEAM.

He knows how to make MONEY, but developing a team and creating an environment where there is a TRUE bond, HE IS BANKRUPTED!!

Daniel Synder should never invoke the words: Sean Taylor, Family, Loyalty and Trust until HE demostrates those things himself.

I hope the players and coaches are successful in spite of Daniel Synder's ways. They have to do what they have to do.

Goosedude, I couldn't agree with you more regarding Blache, was he promoted to D-coordinator or was he resiged. If he was just promoted, he could easily be fired if we decide to bring in Spagnoula. Hemre's the interesting fact, Kirk (not sure what his last name is..our linebackers coach) was just resigned and its been rumored that the Skins have been trying to sign the majority of our assistant coaches..making many believe that they will remain with the team regardless of who the head coach is. Danny is going to resign them only to fire them a week or two latter only to pay them out the full value of their new contracts. At the same time, what head coach would come into a situation where all the coaches have been named before he has been hired...this strategy has never been used before..its one thing to name one offensive coordinator prior to the head coach being hired, just like the cowboys did but at least Wade Phillips was able to fill out the remainder of the staff. Maybe I'm crazy but I think all fans should now push for Blache to be hired as the head coach and promote Kirk Olo..?? to d-coordinator. In regards to Springs and Portis, you would simple have them convert their current high salary's into signing bonues just like we will do with Cooley..the only question is whether or not they will be willing to do that.

From assorted reports that I've heard about Williams and Cerrato not getting along, it sounds like a classic case ordinary office politics. Sure, Williams is on the abrasive side, but since when has that been a negative for a football coach at any level?

Posted by: mhjhahkh | January 26, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

I don't think it matters who the coach is. The Redskins are completely screwed as long as Dan Snyder is there. Some of you have been saying we should have let Greg be HC for a year at least, and if that didn't work out, then hire Cowher. But do you really think Cowher would last anymore than our other coaches? How long did it take him to win the Super Bowl? He also had back to back sub par years 1998-99. If he did that here Snyder would fire him as well. This team is a complete joke now. I can't watch this train wreck anymore.

Posted by: wangbang747 | January 26, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

This is depressing: Not the situation with the Redskins, but the complete inanity, it appears, of so-called Redskin fans and readers of the Washington Post (the latter is, of course, not surprising).

I am not sure which team everyone appears to have been watching for the past several years, but I, for one, have been watching the Redskins team that has been consistent only in being a disappointment.

And, to today's point, the most disappointing thing has been a defense which was only consistent in allowing opponents to come back and win games in the fourth quarter. As late as the Buffalo game, every sentient Redskin fan must have felt in their gut that the Bills would -- of course! -- march down the field and score, as had so many other opponents this year. Gibb's stupid call only gave the Bills a few extra yards, but they had already reached FG range. That loss - like most of our losses - can be traced to a defense that collapses late in the game, and therefore, to Greg Williams.

Even this, however, was a step up for Williams relative to the past few years - when a very talented and expensive defensive unit played dreadfully and the only question was how Williams had fooled everyone into seeing anything "genius" about him.

And -- for this! -- the readers of this article fall over themselves to express their appreciation to Williams, and indignation that Snyder did exactly what he should have done.

The bottom line is that, notwithstanding an inspirational and ultimately meaningless run -thanks to Gibbs being forced to play a competent quarterback, rather than one with cool talents -- it was only a month or so ago (post-Buffalo) that most rational people would have agreed that the Redskins need to clean house at the top - and that meant Gibbs and Williams - and this is precisely what has come to pass. I, for one, don't miss any of these well-deserved departures and am anticipating the HC announcement.

Can a Giants fan jump in, here?
The year I moved here, Danny had just acquired Deion, and Kornheiser was bragging how a Super Bowl was inevitable. Laugh, I thought I'd die.
Eight years later, the Skins still stink and the Post still slobbers all over them.
I feel sorry for the fans; I really do. We suffered for decades in N.Y., so I know what it's like to lose. But to have Snyder guiding the team, and the Post continually cheerleading them? Many times worse. And Tom Cruise on top of it all? And JankySpanky? God help you.
I expect a lot of abuse in return -- that's fine -- but please know that I actually feel bad for you guys. That's the truth.

There are a bunch of cry babies in this forum!!!! Gregg Williams received too much credit for the defense and I think both Dan & Cerrato were clever enough to recognize that. Our defensive line was a bunch garbage each year and Gregg B. made them better than what they should have been. He deserves the job and the defense will not miss a beat. Most of you forget how Gregg Williams was so confident in his scheme that he let core redskins like smoot, Antonio Pierce, and others leave. The defense plummeted to the bottom of the league (REMEMBER)!. How many turnovers has Greggs defemse created over the years- lowest in the league at one point. GOOD LUCK GREGG WILLIAMS-I WILL MISS YOU BUT I DON'T EXPECT THE DEFENSE TO MISS A BEAT.

All things considered, Snyder probably made the right move not hiring Greg Williams. If his interview(s) left him convinced that he and Cerrato could not work with Williams, then it probably would not have made sense for him to hire Williams. Let's face it, we all knew from day one of this fiasco that one thing was a given - Snyder and Cerrato were going to be calling the shots. Unless that was going to change, what use would there have been in subjecting Greg Williams to the misery of trying to function in that environment? They did him a favor by dropping him from consideration.

I won't be making any dramatic declarations about disowning the team, but the inevitablity of the personnel blunders that are likely to follow with Snyder and Cerrato having free reign again makes it difficult to care too much any more. I sort of feel about them the way I did about the Wizards for years. Now that the Wizards are finally showing signs of life, they have piqued my interest somewhat, but it will be a long time before I have the passion for them that I did in the Hayes/Unseld era. I imagine it will be the same with the Skins. If at some point, Danny swallows his pride and hires a GM, or sells the team - or just gets lucky, and the Redskins become something to get excited about again, I will probably be happy about it. It will probably trigger nostalgia to the special time when I lived and died for the team. But after staying with them faithfully through all those years lost in the wilderness, I just don't have the energy to stay emotionally wrapped up with them. If they find success somehow, great. If not, life will go on.

Vinny was with the 49ers organization. Minus their HOFs in the 90s how good were they. But he still hired him. So don't feed me this Buffalo Bullcrap. He didn't have anybody. Wade Phillips also coached in Buffalo and stunk it up all the same. The defense wasn't the problem. It was Joe Gibbs' being out of touch with this millenium. Period. Saunders was tryingto implement his system with Gibbs' over the hill gang of coaches. So if Vinny were so great at evaluation he'd have told Gibbs and Snyder it wasn't a good idea and to 86 it. But hey, now they're going to either hire Fossil or one of those coaches with no HC experience. Hail to the Redskins
Hell Dan Snyder.

I don't like what is going on either and disgree with these decisions but basically there is nothing anyone can do about it because we do not own the Redskins. I just wish that Snyder would listen to the fans and our needs and take into consideration what we do think. He doesn't have to do what we want but at least consider what us fans are saying. The fans are the base of a team and he must not forget that. I love my Skins, always have and always will. Hail to the Redskins!!!!!

Let us assume, for a moment, that Gregg Williams was not the right man for the job. Either because VinnyDAN just does like him (a recipe for disaster for any coach on any team) or because his defenses have not, at the end of the day, always gotten the job done.

They still could not have handled this any worse then they did. If VinnyDAN had asked the fans, what is the worst way I can handle firing GG, even we could not have imagined this.

VinnyDAN already knew he did not like GG, so one or two meetings, which clearly GG deserved, should have been enough to confirm that he still did not like him. Then tell him he is not going to be coach and move on.

If he is not going to be the coach because the team blew some leads, then I have to say that keeping Blache and the rest of the assistants (for one year until their contracts are up and they can join GG wherever he goes) makes no sense.

When Fassel now becomes head coach (or some other head coach without much of an offensive or defensive resume, since he has no choice in who his coordinators are) he will have one year to win, before the offensive and defensive assistants find other jobs and it really does start all over again.

We are FUBAR my friends.

Like GG or not, want him as HC or not, VinnyDAN scr#wed the pooch here. If they don't have a HC on the hook already, I can't imagine what kind of gutless idiot will take the job now.

VinnyDAN: How would like to be our head coach?

Candidate: Great - I have some awesome ideas.

VinnyDAN: Whoa there, hold on, no ideas please. We have all your ideas for you. You'll run the Holmgren version of the West Coast offense that Zorn knows, and the Williams version of defense, to the exten Blache remembers it. Until next year, when you will run something else. Unless we change our mind. So, hey, where did you go?

To quote John McCain: "FUBAR my friends, FUBAR."

Posted by: RedBee | January 26, 2008 4:52 PM | Report abuse

Snyder would screw this up! Fans and players are not happy at all!!! Williams will go elsewhere and prosper (like Norv Turner and Schottenheimer). i think Snyder is going to be the coach. That is the madness of this team. I said all along that the problem with the Redskins is Snyder. They will never win a Super Bowl with him as owner. He is okay with that because he makes lots of money. If the fans would just stop going to the games, you might get him to act right. But they won't. The Skins' fans are fools.

The Day the Redskins Died

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How the Redskins used to make me smile.
And I knew if he had the chance
That he could make those people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

But January made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his being fired,
But something touched me deep inside
The day The Redskins died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in cyberspace
With no time left to start again.
So come on: Dan be nimble, Dan be quick!
The Danny sat on a candlestick
Cause Vinnie is the devil's only friend.

Oh, and as I read this blogging page
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break The Danny's spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw The NFC East laughing with delight
The day the Redskins died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to Redskins store
Where I'd heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn't play.

And in the streets: the ticket holders screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The Redskins all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
Sean, Gregg and Joe the coach,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day The Redskins died.

Second, Snyder doesn't HAVE to know ANYTHING about football. He just has to hire people who do and trust them to run things. It's this second part that I think he may be having difficulty with and hopefully we will learn his lesson soon.

When Pat Gibbs told Joe that coming back would ruin his good name she couldn't have been more right. GIBBS even looks bad in this situation. How could he have ever allowed Snyder to do this???? He was, afterall, suppossed to be helping Snyder with the new coaching search. WHAT A DEBACLE!

Folks, this kind of insanity isn't going to go away until Snyder finally gets the message that he can't do whatever he wants without repurcussions. People need to stop going to games, stop paying for the 6 dollar hot dogs, 10 dollar beers and 100 dollar parking passes. Nothing would make me happier next year than seeing Fed Ex Field only 1/3rd full.

Lastly, WHO HIRES COORDINATORS BEFORE A HEAD COACH!?!?!?! What coach worth a damn will want to start over with a new staff that he has had no say in hiring???!?!?!

Snyder is a parasite and a cancer, in less than a decade he has RUINED this franchise.

SNYDER IF YOU SEE THIS, THIS CITY HATES YOU, PLEASE JUST GO AWAY.

I wonder if Tom Cruise is on the short list for the Special Teams coach?

Posted by: brian928 | January 26, 2008 5:18 PM | Report abuse

I am terribly dissapointed in the Redskins Owner! Dan Snyder is the biggest fool in the NFL. The person who he should have replaced is that idiot Cerrato! Until Cerrato is let go by Danny the team will continue its spiral to the bottom of the league.
I am sure Dan Snyder loves the Redskins, he says he's been a fan since he was a boy. The problem is he never was an athlete, so he doesn't understand what it takes to build a team or how an athletes mind works. In the NFL it takes continuity over a period of years to make it work. This team was just coming together and now we're back at square one.

p.s.- Dan-- I will continue to watch the games on TV because I am a Redskin Fan. I will not buy or accept as a gift another piece of Redskin merchandise until you sell the team because I AM a Redskin Fan.

I have been a Redskin fan since George Allen was coach. This year, how management handled the coaching change is very disheartening. I will attempt to continue as a fan, but this is becoming more difficult as Dan Snyder makes one bone head decision after another.

Dan Snyder is the worst owner in Redskins history -- and in the current NFL. The best thing he could possibly do for my beloved 'Skins would be to sell them to someone who actually knows football. Someone who would spend money on, say, stadium acoustics that provide 12th-man home advantage rather than, oh I don't know, the likes of Steve Spurrier and Deion Sanders. Danny, if you love them, set them free.

kdowney3, candyasses...are you serious?? If anyone is a candyass its you because you don't care and will let Danny lie to you, gauge you with the highest prices for tickets and parking but worst of all you seem to have no problem letting Snyder treat our franchise like its a fantasy football team. Let me give you a reality check...Fassel, Spagnoula, McDanials..etc are not hot commodities if you haven't noticed and the Falcons don't count. Spagnoula and McDanials have limited experience..this is both the first year that either of them have become offensive or defensive coordinators. Fassel wasn't successful with the Ravens, hasn't been at the top of any list for the head coaching vacany's and worst of all he couldn't even get the Cheifs offensive coordinator position..thats right he interviewed with the Chiefs and didn't get the job. When Williams and Saunders were allowed to execute their game plans we won games and considering all the injury's and the whole Sean Taylor situation I think we did pretty damn good and would only get better next year when we were more healthy. If you don't like Williams thats fine but please do not try and tell us that any of the current head coaching canidates are up and coming with great resumes..what a joke!!

In almost 40 years of being a loyal fan of the Redskins I have never been more embarassed BUT not for anything the front office has been doing.

I have never been more embarassed to be associated with such hysterical paranoia all over this blog remeniscent of my daughters reaction when I deny their request to have a sleepover.

We all loved the way GW handled the Sean Taylor tragedy and for that we are forever emotionally tied to the Man that GW is, but we all did not love the way GW handled our bend and too often break defense. Get a grip people...Joe Gibbs appears to not have had GW's back as much as you would like to believe...Watch the Larry Michael interview w/ Gibbs and you will have a completely different view of why this played out the way it did.

And once again, I am in no way shape or form related the Redskins organization.

So here's how it stands. We have two coordinators not picked by the head coach, because we have none. We have no general manager because the owner likes to play with his toys. We have an owner without a clue, but with an ego 180 degrees the other way. There's only one solution - Jeff George.

It's getting pretty obvious that Gibbs knew his influence was waning in the organization or else Williams would have been hired immediately (regardless of whether or not he is a good head coach candidate). There was clear tension between Williams and Saunders, no question about it. In the absence of Gibbs, it makes sense to get rid of Saunders, and maybe Williams, too.

The problem the Redskins now have is that whoever the poor soul is that takes the head coach job will have absolutely no power vis-a-vis most other head coaches in the league (with maybe the exception of Lane Kiffin in Oakland - at least until he winds up leaving Oakland one way or the other). What person would want to take this job as a result? Why would a coach who took a team to a Super Bowl (Fassel) subject himself to that? Any fool who takes the job will be a "CHINO" (coach head in name only) Aren't they out of fashion these days?

So much for "continuity" now with a new offensive coordinator. I can't see any of the newer coaches, who have never been head coaches (Spagnuolo; McDaniels) successfully dealing with an established coaching staff not of his own choosing.

Redskins fans need to seriously protest all of this embarassment. Protests at the HQ, economic protests, and once next season starts, when the fool takes the field, boo the stuffing out of him and chant "We Want Joe" or "We Want Gregg? when the team is on national TV, or something else creative, to make it clear to the owner and his lackey that the fan-base is clearly disinclined.

Beyond that, where's the outrage from Gibbs? Sounds like he was given a muffler for him to retreat to Charlotte.

Oh, well, a year from now when the Panthers fire Jon Fox, there will be Joe, ready to take over his "hometown" team...
amd Williams in Tennessee, Jacksonville, or even Miami, will be a good thing for either of those teams. Kind of a shame this didn't happen a few weeks earlier -- a number of colleges could have hired the guy for a mint...

I sincerely think I am DONE with this organization! I like the players and fans, but I cannot continue to waste energy, hopes, and my life away for people like Dan Snyder to make idiotic decisions. Enough is enough! I wish this organization well, but that won't be enough until Dan Snyder either moves the team or sells it. Either way, Dan Snyder has ruined this team and I am sure he reads the blogs as well. However, his arrogance, typical for a rich man, to do the exact opposite of what logic tells them. Dan, this is not stocks or gamble, this is football. Now not only do you have a new system, but you have players that would rather get cut or traded to be apart of a rebuilding process again. Many players have goals to reach in the NFL and rebuilding each year isn't going to help them reach their goals. I wouldn't blame Moss, Portis, Cooley, Campbell, etc if they requested a trade because this organization is going no place real fast! Dan if you are reading this, I hope the NFL investigates your dealings and finds a way to pull this team from you! You are an idiot that should never have been awarded this team.

I would like to say how sorry I am that Joe Gibbs came back now. He took over a team that literally had players that didn't know how to line up properly. I went to the last game before Joe took over, and it was shameful how bad they were, and embarrassing to be a Skins fan. From that roster, I believe there are only 5 or 6 players left. With the state of the team at that time, I thought it would take several years to turn this thing around. But I knew it would, and despite some saying how we were mediocre the past four years, I think the team is certainly improved overall. Not there yet, but with the overhaul the roster has gone through, with the salary cap problems we had, and all the injuries and losing Sean this year, Joe did a heck of a job. Now, it looks like we start over, for the most part. Back to the days of total chaos again. So I'm sorry Joe came back and tainted his great record and reputation for a jerk like Danny. Joe made mistakes, no doubt, but nothing compared to what the Danny and Vinny show have done and will again I'm sure. I have heard several players want out now, and some are star players. Even if they don't or won't trade the ones who don't want to be here, what can we expect effort wise from unhappy players. Dan Snyder is a liar, and has lost respect of the players on the team, fans, and other NFL execs. Thats how it was pre Gibbs, and now we are going back to the same. Sorry Joe. Dan slapped you in the face for all your devotion to the Skins.

I believe that it was good to get rid of Saunders but I question getting rid of Williams. Saunders never really helped the Skins at all. He was a waste of money. Now Williams did have a pretty darn good defense in the Skins for a few years. I really don't believe that Joe Gibbs had it in him anymore. The players of today make so much money and they use the playing just for money rather than the old time guys like Riggins and Jurgensen who had football as their entire life. The new guys are harder to manage and I agree with Joe on retiring. Enjoy life. I also believe that as an owner Dan Snyder is a hard man to work for and anyone that works for him will not find the time enjoyable. If the Skins got Cowher we would have a winning team. Otherwise, I don't think anyone will ever get us to win again unless we keep Collins as the starting qb or get a new leader. Jason just does not have what it takes.

First of all lets realize this, as long as Dan Snyder owns this team they will NEVER win a Super Bowl. At the end of the day a man's word is all he has, Dan is not a man of his word, there is no CONTINUITY in these coaching decisions/process. He lied at Joe Gibbs retirement press conference. He showed total lack of respect and tact in not keeping the assistant coaches informed, it took Joe Gibbs to call the coaches at the Senior Bowl to inform them of what their status was and what's going on. There is a right and wrong way to treat your employees and that was not right. I've been a die hard fan of this team since 1972, and ever since this stubborn egotistical moron bought the team it's as if the team is cursed and its just not a pleasant and enjoyable experience to be a Redskin fan, year after year, after year its just one disapointment after another, the trashed seasons, the trashed draft picks, the crushing 2nd half collapses, the Sean Taylor tragedy, the stupid coaching hires/fires, I mean seriously when the hell is this nightmare ever going to come to an end?

Jeez. Take a deep breath and grab a valium or something!

Why is everyone assuming that Snyder hired his 2 coordinators WITHOUT input or consent from the new HC? There must be 100 posts in here talking about how stupid this.

It would be stupid. If it happened that way.

Just because Snyder isn't letting the media dictate his timetable doesn't mean it's happening in the order we get it!

And no, I'm not him in disguise. I'll join the angry voices if it does end up being Fossilface. But so far I'm not unhappy. GW did some good things with the DEF and then he did some not-so-good. I'm certainly not ready to nominate him for Canton.

To be honest....we are probably the only NFL fans crazy enough to be driving ourselves nuts over a head coaching change.

Some people say BRONCOs fans are the most rabid...I still say SKINS fans are....even though we don't beat opposing fans up all the time at the stadium.

People do need to calm down....so lets analyze why people are all freaking out.....

Take a deep breath....and think calmly before you tear up your redskins gear and throw yourself into DC traffic (which probably wouldn't hurt you as it doesn't move very fast)

1) CONTINUITY has never guaranteed success.....Nor would Gregg Williams. IMO Gibbs knew that this team had reached as far as it could go under him...that's why he left the 1st time...that's why he left the 2nd time (and family reasons).

2) New Head Coaches inherit coordinators all the time.......When Dungy took over the Colts, Gruden the Bucs, Tomlin with the Steelers.....just for recent examples.

3) Boycotting the team and giving up your tickets does nothing but help fellow redskins fans improve their seats....at last count the waiting list for REDSKINS was 155,000 for General Season Tickets.

4) Players will not exodus just because of a new coach...a) because they have contracts, b) they are professionals....if anything it'll make them play harder because they need to prove they deserve to start.

5) People place too much blame on Snyder....lets be honest. There aren't 10000000 clones of him...he can't be involved in every aspect of the team 24 hours a day. You have to put some of the blame on Gibbs and the coaches and the players.

Lighten up dude who quotes lines from Prince songs(act age not show size.) Last guy was just venting a bit w/ the Hitler reference and if you love this team you understand the sentiment. I kinda like the pro-active ideas being floated about here seeing as we are all feeling tremendously FRUSTRATED and at what's being perpetrated against our team. I'm just sick and tired of this sh*t and maybe it IS time WE ALL did something about it. Crashing the website is a great start. Will they listen then? Probably not. Just like nobody listen's when we march and protest illegal invasions of countries. But I march nonetheless, as it makes me feel empowered and good to see and be with all the others who feel the same.
Now, why stop at crashing the website? Let's actually go down to Redskins Park with picket signs, bullhorns, the whole nine yards. At the very least it will badly embarass Snyder and his little boytoy (not-my cousin)Vinny. It would surely make Sportcenter and maybe even the reg news. Now THAT would be doing something. As Belushi would say: "Who's with me?!!" -J. Charles NYC

p.s. Though I now live in NY, I would make the trip down for that day. If anyone has experience organizing something like this-please take the lead and tell us when to go. I'd bet I'm not alone on this. If you're with me-let it be known here. Now.

What a complete joke of an organization! It really sucks that we must buy this BS from The Dan and Vinny if we choose to be Skins fans. I wish I could just flip a switch and become a fan of another team. Of course I can't so the suffering continues. Losing Sean and then Gibbs was tough enough. Now we are yet again reminded of the complete and utter futility of this once great organization.

As I said earlier Vinny Cerrato is the Village Idiot.
He would have been whacked long ago if he performed for a NY crime family like he has for the Redskins.

His boss is like John Gotti, a big mouth and no f'n brain.

I am as pi$$ed at Snyder as most on this blog (stressing most - some of you scare me and should scare Danny)...I think that Williams was the right choice at this time. But, the fact remains that Snyder is an egomaniac and he will do things on his terms and in accordance with his own idiosyncratic desires, and the fact is he really didn't like Williams too much. I don't know why - I'm no insider - but that much is clear. Conversely, Cerrato clearly has pictures of Danny involved in unsavory acts with a mule and will always be part of his regime. Another fact of life is this - for all you yelling for Snyder to sell, as much as I wish this were so, you have to realize it will NEVER HAPPEN. This guy will own the team as long as he lives. And the notion that "he will change when he starts feeling it in the pocket"? Sorry, I don't buy it. This guy sold Snyder Comm to some French conglommerate for billions - he is not going to have a revelation if a few thousand fans don't show up. Besides, do you realize how many thousands of people are on the season ticket wait list? So the sooner all you haters accept that, the less hair, sleep and sanity you'll lose over this.

To me, this is like having a President you cannot stand - do you love your country any less? Of course not. Snyder really does mean well, I believe that. He is a lifelong Skins fan and wants them to do well. But his ego often obscures this fact and undermines common sense and doing what's best for the team, even though ironically I believe he wants nothing but the best for Redskins Nation. Let's support the team, continue to voice our disapproval as warranted, and hope for the best from the new staff. Personally I think that Fassell is a fallback and that he wants that young asst. from NE. That might not be a bad thing. Time will tell.

Snyder has given us little to feel loyal about- from the high prices at Fed-Ex to the treatment of people as machine parts or token yesterday's-fame-profit-makers (Sanders,B. Smith)...I seriously think the team will be sold, probably (hopefully) before they move back to the infinitely preferable old RFK site..

I really thought Dan had learned a thing or two. He surrounds him self with "yes men". Just wait until he starts asking players to renegotiate there contracts in the next few months. What 25 million over the cap next season? How do you hire coordinators before a head coach. Now he'll find a "yes sir" coach. He's learned nothing. I will always love my team and will bleed burgundy and gold. I'll just Snyder bash every Sunday we loose. Look for a completely different team next year....

Spoiled Rich Boy...Hey, go get Jeff George to coach the team...I bet he blow all the money you wasted on him some years back. One of MANY great calls Danny Boy!!!
The beloved history of the Redskins is being pissed on by this fool with too much money. He is classless and always looks evil. I think he is a Cowboys fan!

I am so sorry to say this.. especially as a supporter of Greg Williams and a supporter of Mr. Snyder..

but so many of you are missing the point... This is not about whether Williams Could be a good coach. or should be a good coach.. or that Gibbs was or wasn't... or even how Mr. Snyder has decided to conduct his business..

IT IS ABOUT THE CONTINUED LACK OF RESPECT MR. SNYDER AFFORDS ANYBODY HE DEEMS INFERIOR TO HIMSELF... SIMPLE BUT TRUE..

Mr. Snyder has time and again.. embarrassed and detracted from.. the Storied Franchise he purchased..

THIS ALONE SHOULD HAVE THE NFL CONSIDER PULLING HIS FRANCHISE RIGHTS AND FORCE HIM TO SELL THEM TEAM...

AND YES,.... THIS CAN BE DONE... AS EASILY AS IF MR. SNYDER COMMITTED A CRIME AND BROUGHT ABOUT OR DEMONSTRATED IN ANY WAY.. THE INTENTION OF, ACTING IN SUCH MANNER AS TO DAMAGE THE REPUTATION OF THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE OR THE TEAM HE HOLDS THE FRANCHISE RIGHTS TO..

I could be wrong.. but I remember there was something like this in San Fran.,.. with Debartolo having to sell to his sister.. Mr. Snyder has a sister doesn't he??? and she is a part owner.... hmmmmm

Snyder is ruining this organization. I am an avid Redskin fan, but time and time again Snyder continues to disappoint me (as well as many other fans) with his decision making. 99% of Redskin fans would have happily excepted Williams as Head Coach. Snyder continues to disappoint fans, so now it is time for us to dissapoint him by not attending games and purchasing merchandise.

Day by day, this gets dumber and dumber. Here comes 4-12, I guarantee it, maybe even 3-13. This team is a complete disaster from the top on down and Joe Gibbs is also culpable. He REFUSES to exert some influence over this mess and simply lets Danny run this organization into the ground. I didn't think it could get worse for the Redskins as an organization after the death of Sean Taylor, but it did when Gibbs retired. Now it's gotten worse than that and we've got MORE chaos than we had under Norv and Spurrier! Dan Snyder is a fool, he can't simply copy Jerry Jones and think that's going to lead to an NFC East title, Jerry Jones promoted Jason Garrett from within the organization and Wade Phillips knew when he took the job it was Garrett's in a couple years. What's Snyder's "plan" now, to make Zorn the HC in two years? I was going to get a Sean Taylor jersey in order to contribute to his daughter's fund set up by the Redskins, but no more, I don't want Dan Snyder to get a penny of my money. Memo to Dan Snyder: You're NOT Jerry Jones! Jerry Jones actually PLAYED FOOTBALL!!

Theory #1:
I personally believe this a republican plot to not make Bush the most hated man in DC. Karl Rove is somehow telepathically controlling Vinny Cerrato who is controlling Dan Snyder.
Theory #2:
Tom Cruise was at opening day last season and cursed us to the worst season ever. Tom Cruise was at the Seahawks playoff game this year and we lost. Daniel Snyder has been brainwashed by Scientologists and will now name Tom Cruise to coach the Redskins; all for the purposes of gaining more publicity for his cult religion.

I wish someone would write an article about the Curse of Tom Cruise.

I realize this is a BUSINESS to Dan Snyder but I wonder if he is thinking about how he is playing with folks' livelihood. It isn't a decent thing to do to STRING PEOPLE ALONG who have to provide for selves and family. The different coaches and coordinators etc. are grown a$$ men who have to feed families and pay bills. Don't string them along because you are holding the marbles at this time. Dan Snyder is the "BIG MAN" only because he owns the team, but that does not give him the right to lose sensitivity toward human beings. Shameful what he is doing and for that I AM DECLARING DAN SNYDER AS THE BAMMA OF THE MONTH!

Snyder sucks. I agree that maybe we shoulda tried GW for a yr and then wait for Cowher but if we can keep some of our team intact, mainly our defensive scheme, then we should be alright. "F" Jim Fassel he hasnt done anything. He just seems soft to me. For some reason I dont see a POrtis, Santana Moss and others responding to this guy. Dan Snyder dissapointed once again, it has been a few years but we can always rely on his checkbook.

Our team is good, we're a few plays and a couple players away. We had the Giants, we beat Greenbay (if we didnt fumble the ball so damn much) and we had Dallas the first game. Taylor wasnt there the 2nd half, T.O woulda been shut down. We can play with anybody. As long as we keep the same defensive scheme and a good offensive line, anybody can run behind it. I dont see Portis being there for much longer and Betts could thrive. I hope Synder has the patience in Campbell because I think he can be really good.

Getting back to the point at hand, Im sad to see Gregg Williams leave and i hope the best for him. (4 interviews are u kidding me )Snyder shows again that he can bring in business but can't run his staff accordingly and its a shame that its reflected throughout the league. The one thing and the only thing is,is that he is from this area, he loves this team and he will spend the money to win. Other then that, this move sucks and he better make up for it. Skins 4 Life !!!!

OldNova--Jerry Jones did it before this past season when he hired Jason Garrett as OC before he hired Wade Phillips to be the HC. The difference is Garrett was a QB coach, I believe under Parcells, and Wade Phillips took the job with the understanding he was grooming Garrett to be the next HC in 2-3 years. Dan Snyder is copying half of Jones plan, but, as usual, Snyder's copycat methods have zero intelligence behind them.

How do we make Danny boy wake up? The Redskins to many of us are more than a fantacy football team. I suppose it's his money and He can do with it whatever He wishes; however, Some of us hold the Redskins almost sacred. I know Mr. Cook is rolling over several times by now. Can't He take a clue from New England or Indiannapolis or even right down the road the Balimore Ravens. Hire a GM who knows football and personnel and let Him do what you obviously can't no matter how much money you throw at people. I wonder doesn't He understands we want the Redskins to succeed and Him but He's make Himself and the team look like one big joke year after year. I'm a die hard Redskin fan but the brown paper bag is calling my name for more than just Halloween. Danny ! Please for the love of the game, fans, and all that is sacred seek professional help. As long as Dan Snyder owns the Redskins, the words Washington Redskins and Super Bowl will not be in the same sentence.

Hey goosedude, what are you Damage Control for Snyder.

This reminds me of the monoploy that the phone company had until thay were broken up. They just did what they wanted cause there was no real conseguence.

Snyder is just thumbing his nose at the fans and the public. He's saying "I'm" the only game in town, screw you. I wish the Ravens would build a stadium in Calverton!

I've loved the Redskins for my whole life, but these are not the Washington Redskins they're now the "Dan Snyder Cash Cows".

I am done with the Redskins. The only way this clown is going to care is if he looses money. That's the only language he understands.

I can only hope he pisses off enough powerful Washingtonians and it starts to creep into the power vaccum of Washington. Maybe they start to put pressure on the NFL. Then the little piss-ant will get the message. Have the powers breathing down his neck for a while. This is a strange twon, if it's in the best intrest of the polititions it could happen.

So long Redskins, Go Ravens!

How do you get guys to buy into the "Redskins Family" that Gibbs preached when this stuff happens. Look kids, Danny made is money as a marketer. Basically a person who convinces you that a load of crap is worth buying. Don't buy it. The ONLY thing this guy understands is the "market"... Don't be a part of it. Don't buy his tickets, his parking, his TV ads, his radio ads, his merchandise, his team....just don't do it. A winning, respectable team sells itself. That's something Danny just doesn't understand. Mark my words: as long as D.S. owns the team, the Skins will NEVER be in a Super Bowl, let alone win. I hope some day someone can call me on that, but I just don't see it. Pats fans, here I come....

There's no way, no way at all, a head-coach will come in with the understanding that he cannot bring in HIS choice of coordinators.
Unless, of course, whoever accepts the job later will accept it because...because all he'll care about will be getting that new contract. Do you think? BTW, did I spell 'contract' correctly? I think it's spelled $$$$$$$$!!

I think Daniel Snyder should pull an Art Modell and move the team to another city, say Anchorage...Washington retains the rights to the team name and we receive an expansion franchise in 2010 owned by the city itself. In the expansion draft we pick up Michael Vick, Marcus Vick, Pacman Jones, Chris Henry, Rodney Harrison, Ricky Williams, and have LT come in and coach. We become The Longest Yard team of the NFL and win the superbowl the same year.

Posted by: granger242 | January 26, 2008 8:09 PM | Report abuse

This is just sickening. Same Danny Boy Partridge, same childish behavior. I am so sick of this egotistical jack ass, I can hardly watch the team anymore. I have closely followed my beloved skins since the 1960s, and now I about to scrap it all. Just disgusting. I LOVED Sally Jenkin's line about Dan Partridge cutting down those trees so he could see the Potomac. A true story, and just perfectly indicative of how this snot-nosed Napoleon thinks. Complete disregard for anyone else. I'm thankful Saunders and Williams are gone. They deserve better. They must be decent men if JoeG picked them. Without JoeG's character and leadership to buffer them from Napoleon, they SHOULD go elsewhere.

Prediction: McDaniels will re-buff Danny-boy. Who would want this. If I were in his shoes, I would ONLY do it if I had ZERO options, wanted to rake in 25M or so in five years, didn't give a crap what my rep as a coach was, and then hit the beach forever. Trouble is, only the clods consider that. Real coaches, the good ones, live for coaching and would coach high school if that's all they could do.

Consider me an ex-fan.

I'm going to share some shocking news by the way....

Snyder is not the worst owner we could have.....

we could have the Cards Owner .....
we could have the Bills owner (who wants to play 1/2 games in another city)...
and one thing Snyder is not Cheap (see the EAGLES owner).
Tom Benson...who literally holds New Orleans hostage every couple years with threats to move the time.

Or the worst of all time....AL DAVIS....who lets behonest is just crazy now.

Everyone also seems to forget that it was Snyder who helped broker the compromise which allowed the last CBA to pass. And lets be honest......if there was no Salary Cap....the REDSKINS would rule all.

Is Snyder a saint?? No.....but is he really the worst we could have.....

As I have season tickets to both the REDSKINS and RAVENS (Family tickets I inherited).....I can say that Snyder in many ways.....the general season ticket holders has been treated relatively well.

we can always look foward to looking back at the eighties.

Posted by: cheeseman8 | January 26, 2008 8:11 PM | Report abuse

I came to the washington area in 1978. I grew up near the SF Bay Area and rooted for the Stabler,Belitnikof, Casper, etc Raiders. I then rooted for the Oilers simply because of Earl Campbell, in my view the best back of all time ( I know, Brown, Simpson, Sayers, etc. Save it for another time). I have always hated the Cowboys. I liked the positive atmosphere here when Redskins were successful and the Redskins Org under Cooke, Beathard, Gibbs. They display an excellence that was unusual. All that is gone now. The only fact that explains the post-Cooke Redskins experience (this latest fiasco included) is that the Synder footbal Organization is simply incompetent. I have averaged attending 4 Redskin games a year for at least 10 years. All that is done. The organization is simply foundering and will untimately go the way of the Angelos' Orioles. What team to adopt now? The answer is simple, the finest NFL organization from top to botton is the NE Patriots closely followed by the Indy Colts. I intend to place my attention there for the foreseeable future (until Synder is gone and the redskin organization ceased to be a joke).

Latest update from SI.Com

Quarterbacks coach Bill Lazor and Al Saunders' son, offensive assistant Bob Saunders, also will not return next season, a person familiar with the coaching selection process told The Associated Press. The person also said that most, if not all, of the rest of the coaching staff was expected to remain with the team, lending credence to owner Dan Snyder's stated desire to maintain a degree of continuity following the resignation of head coach Joe Gibbs on Jan. 8.

The person said linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti has agreed to a new contract. Running backs coach Earnest Byner, the only other assistant whose deal was about to expire, has been in talks with Tampa Bay about a job but would be welcome to return as well.

The heart and soul of this team died the day Snyder bought it and John Cooke headed to the Bahamas. It's been a disaster since and always will be as long as Snyder is the owner. It's a shame, this team used to be fun but not any more. No heart, no soul, just a cash cow for an incompetent owner. I go back a long way with the skins and have never been so down on them as I am now. Too bad we can't bring back the "good old days"!

What has Vinney ever done right? Who was the first person Marty fired when hired as Head Coach? Maybe Vinney......Now who was the first person snyder hired after firing Marty? Now we are beginning to understand how this whole thing is working....The real shame poor Mr. Cook just didn't no how much this team was worth and out of the reach of his son. Now all of us die hard Redskin fan can agree on two things.... We hate Dallas and and our owner. The Biggest joke of the NFL. This is exactly the reason why everybody hates us redskin fans so much..It's the reason why we get tarred and feathered on other messageboards and why we are despised and why other fans hate us with a passion. Most of these posts are made by ignoramic and idiotic homers who obviously don't know crap about football and they certainly don't know anything about our beloved redskins!..JESUS H. CHRIST people!!...why the negativity?!!..Do most of you realize that Joe Gibbs was the one solely responsible for butchering up our draft year in and year out since he's been here, and the one responsible for bringing in over priced free agents and has-beens who have no business starting in the NFL?!..The only thing Snyder did was just sign the checks!..Gibbs was brought in as team president and head coach and he was the one who had the final say in all personel decisions!..that was one of the stipulations and conditions for Gibbs coming out of retirement was to have almost total control!..the fact that I even need to explain this and post this is extremely dissapointing...but yet everybody is bashing Dan Snyder when he isn't the one who is at fault!..Goes to show the mentality of our so-called skins fans..Do you realize that since 2004 (Joe Gibbs return)our record is 30-34 with the team having absolutely no identity or direction?!..and if not for a unfortunate injury to Jason Campbell and Todd Collins ressurecting our season because of his knowledge of Al Saunders system, we would have probably finished 6-10 or 7-9 at best!..And all of you fair weathered idiots would have been clamoring for JG to get fired, and how the game passed him by, blah blah blah!..Hell, there were idiots on this board calling for Gregg Williams to be fired last year!!..now these posters think he is the next messiah and the second coming and have their collective panties in a bunch because he got fired and wasn't Dan Snyders choice to be the next head coach!.Christ, I'm sick and tired of the this overreaction garbage from our so-called faithful!..What in the hell have we exactly accomplished in the last four years?!!..two flukish playoff appearances which didn't amount to jack?!..sub .500 record?!!...losing core redskin players and heart and soul players such as Lavar Arrington, Walt Harris, Ryan Clark, Antonio Pierce, Fred Smoot (once), Champ Bailey, (and the list goes on and on)...Anyhow, I welcome the change and I'm looking forward to it!..If anything, this "overhaul" was a long time coming and its about time we cleaned house...build through the draft, and supplement through free agency, pick up a good tall WR, a pash rushing DE or two, shore up our offensine line and watch young Jason Campbell mature and flourish into an elite QB under Zorn's tutelage and guidance (and Jim Fassel if he is indeed the chosen one)...and yes, I am a season ticket holder in the 100 section and I don't plan on giving them up!..To all of you other phonies, don't come jumping back on the bandwagon when we start winning and becoming a prominent franchise once again!...Damn, I feel a lot better now that I got that off my chest!

Having observed Snyder's actions since he bought the team, it has become increasingly evident that what he likes is for his coaches and other personnel to kiss up to him. If you aren't going to kiss his but, the you might just as well not apply. Look at Vinny Cerrato. He kisses up to Snyder routinely and is making a ton of money doing it. Does he do a good job? Hell no! Take a look at the team's draft record during his tenure! Fair at best, but he got promoted! Gregg Williams is not the type to kiss Snyder's but, so now he's gone. What a crime. I wouldn't say that Gibbs kissed up to Snyder too much, but he did a good job of walking a thin line. The team will never succeed with Snyder as owner because there isn't a good coach out there that plays that kissing game.

ekaras3 - you assume Joe Gibbs left the Redskins because of his family and not the fact that it was pointless to go on with a disfunctional owner. Think back to the press conference when Joe retired. Who looked like the Billionaire and who (the guy with all the money) couldn't communicate. Didn't he make all his money in marketing? Don't you need communication skills to market?
BTW - If you think Dan had enough class to handle Sean Taylor's funeral - think again - he did what Joe told him to do.
Have a great ride following him off the Bridge. Joe Gibbs was smart enough to get off the Six Flags ride before it breaks and so am I.

it really is a shame how they did Williams and Saunders, I understand the business side and all...but if he didn't want them, he should have let them go from the jump..!...not play with their futures! I hope they both go on to have succesfull careers. the reason Dannyboy and his puppet "white shirt" Vinny won't deal with guys like Williams or Grimm is because they won't stand for his bs, they're football guys, Danny is NOT...he's an idiot and knows nothing about the game...I'm sure he's never played flag football let alone tackle! I love the Skins but hate the way the orginization is handling things...with the way the NFC East is...might be a good 5 years before we EVER knock on the door again...lets get ready for a couple of LONG 4-12 seasons Skins fans...and what makes it even worse....WE'RE BACK TO BEING JOKES OF THE NFL!

You forget those great years with Dan at the Helm before Joe II.

It is my belief that he got tired of dealing with Dan and Vinny - most of all the owner who had to be in on every decision.

I wonder what the last four years would have been like with Jack Kent Cooke and Bobby B back in place of Dan and Vinny.

Joe finally realized in was pointless to go on and he could do more good for his family (he owed them) than he could with the Redskins. Joe is a class act all the way.

The best way to get rid of Dan Snyder is ignore him and his product. Start following Washington's OTHER teams, the ones that care about their customers and the community -- the Wizards, the Capitals, the Nationals, the Mystics, D.C. United. Heck, all of them are currently closer to championships than Snyder will ever be. Ignoring Snyder will drive his franchise's value down and force him to sell.

Seems to me that Fassel will end up being the HC.

Schwartz- if it were him there is no reason not to name him now.

Spags- why keep the most of the d coaches if he is coming in?

McDaniel -why hire Zorn if McDaniel is coming in.

With most of the existing coaches staying, it seems that Snyder is looking for experience in managing. Fassell is the only one that fits that bill.

Not saying I like it, I wanted Williams or Grimm, but it is hard to believe it won't be Fassell at this point.

Lsg45,
Yes, I understand your anger torwards the boy wonder but you've gotta keep things in perspective..When Dan Snyder first bought the team, he was indeed a meddlesome owner and always interefered in the football operations and decisions...However, he was indeed true to his word, when he brought Joe Gibbs back, and had a laissez-faire and/or "hands off" approach policy where he basically let Joe Gibbs bring in whatever players and coaches Gibbs heart desired!...Hell, coach Gibbs has even reiterated this on several occassions through various speeches via the media...And this is why Joe needs to be criticized, not Dan Snyder...Now, had he fired Joe Gibbs and didn't have some kind of feasible strategy or recourse, then my wrath would definitely be kindled against him.

It doesn't matter if Vince Lombardi came back from the grave, if we had Bill Bellichek, Joe Gibbs, Bill Walsh, Chuck Knoll, Don Shula, and Tom Landry on the coaching staff, Danny boy would still find a way to screw it all up. As long as he and his "yes-man" sidekick Vinnie are running this organization, there will never be long term success here because the owner refuses to stay out of football affairs and refuses to allow someone who is a qualified football person (e.g. a real GM) run the organization. This organization is fundamentally flawed in structure and it starts at the top. Vinnie has absolutely no credibility in the league and has made a number of disasterous personnel decisions. Look, Snyder can hire whomever he wants. Its the unprofessional manner and the detrimental way he approaches the process which makes us the laughing stock in the league and angers the fanbase. The bottomline is Snyder will never hire someone who will tell him no. If I own a CPA firm, I'm not going to hire a dishwasher to come run my business.

I agree...win or lose Danny boy will still get paid...we need to do what they did in Atlanta...the one game where they had like 3 or 4 thousand in the stands...when he sees that nobody is showing up MAYBE, he'll get the message, but he doesn't care about the fans..honestly I don't think he cares about winning a SuperBowl...it's all about $ with him. I knew he was a joke when he brought Neon Deon (clown) here...WHAT TRUE REDSKINS FAN WOULD EVEN CONSIDER A FORMER COWBOY?!?!?!?! not to mention he was washed up! The differencce between Danny and J. Kent Cooke...I honestly think Kent Cooke cared about the fans...Danny doesn't, because like I said...we're all still linning his pockets...

Even so, who appoints an OC and DC without appointing a HC?

Who promises there will be consistency and hires a different QB Coach and OC?

Who leaves his team, who laid it on the line at the end of the season, and the fans hanging without a word? Joe Gibbs had to call the coaches and tell them what was going on.

At this point one can only guess that Danny is about to hire a Wade Phillips clone (e.g. Jim Fassel) who is more a care taker and friend to the players than a head coach. In Dallas you could rationalize that the big dummy was only a stand in until Jason Garrett was deemed ready and all that Jerry really needed was someone to make Eldorado Owens feel good about himself. That same logic doesn't apply here with Zorn and Blache. By some accounts Zorn took the job to be closer to his doppleganger Largent and Blache just happens to be the last person seated when the music stopped. The key to how Danno thinks is all locked up in the equation: Six Flags is to Disney as Fassel is to a real coach (hint: think cheap imitation).

Chargersix,
first of all, Gibbs departure caught everyone, including Dan Snyder, off guard!..It was quite obvious and apparent to me, that nobody, and I mean, nobody expected this to happen..I, Dan Snyder, and millions of other redskin fans expected Gibbs to fulfill his 5 year coaching commitment....why do you keep bringing this up when it's pointless to argue since we already have the facts!...gibbs left on his own accord, and it was indeed unexpected judging by the reaction of Snyder, coaches and players alike....Secondly, maybe Snyder is taking a page of out of Jerry Jones playbook and already has a head coach in place who has similar football philosophies that are coincide with Jim Zorns...otherwise, like you say, it would be totally useless so I'm thinking that Jim Fassel is definitely the man or someone else who holds Jim Zorn in high esteem as it relates to coaching a football team...Btw, this a blessing in disguise for Jason Campbell..I saw a lot of idiots on these messageboards throw the young kid under the bus but I wasn't one of them...I really appreciate what Todd Collins did for us and if not for him, we would have definitely finished 6-10 or 7-9 at best!..(see original post)...It was quite obvious to everyone, myself included, that JC was a difficult time mastering Al Saunders playbook and this was the reason for the predominantly conservative play calling while he was our QB...having said that, Jim Zorn, a great QB in his own right, and does have a good history and pedigree of developing good QB's will only do wonders for Jason Campbells game and confidence!..I truly believe that we will go back being more a smash mouth football team with a more conventional approach on offense and you will see JC mature into a bonafide, elite QB...just watch and see!..you heard it here first!

lsg45 - Agree! I think Joe is just to much of a nice guy and trusting that he really thought he got through to Danny and did really think it would turn out differently with Gregg and the rest.

You are right about this getting really bad. Snyder didn't learn anything. It is amazing he has done so well in business - where you have to be a good judge of character and surround yourself with good people. With the exception of Joe Gibbs, he has never done that with the Skins. Even with Joe it didn't matter as he had Vinny above or beside him. It appears that Joe put a muzzle on Vinny for the last 4 years but that was taken off the minute he retired and Danny started taking his advice again.
I know they need to wait to be fired to ensure they get a pay check and can support their families but I would really love to see Joe Bugel, Danny Smith, Byner and the others walk.

And how many years will it take to get Jason and the rest up to speed on that new play book? Al has been doing the OC thing for a while. Zorn is a Quarterback and a Quarterback coach, now without a head coach.

Organizations do OK with Xs and Os - They do great with chemistry and Leadership. We had that two weeks ago and could have continued it with a minor change in the staff. Gregg, or Al, moving up. We also had guys that would have given their left arm for Joe Gibbs, Greg Williams and Sean Taylor next year. That has been erased in two weeks.

The Steelers HC said the other day that there would be no changes to his staff as he valued stability.

I've been in too many units not to know that the players have been getting no word and are asking themselves what the F.... is going on. Not good under any circumstances.

I gave up my season tickets last year (Danny priced me out of the market with a 260 percent price increase on club seats). The only way to get his attention is for more Redskins "former fans" to turn in their tickets and stop financially supporting his egotistical ways.

Snyder and Cerrato are disgusting people. THEY floated that nonsense about Williams trashing Gibbs. Now, they act like the media was at fault. And what is with Blache stabbing Williams in the back? He's now become Danny Boy's lawn jockey. The whole thing stinks to high heaven................

What is the definition of stupidity?? Doing same thing over and over and expecting different result. I guess river flows upward in Redskin Park. Hiring assistants first and get a head coach later? Very smart. What if new head coach doesn't like assistants?? Dan, just figure out how to raise more price on hot dog. I'm sure you're very good at it.

My Buffalo Bills Fan Friends were PRAYING that we got Greg Williams as their coach......

Posted by: goosedude | January 26, 2008 02:41 PM

This from the biggest loser fans in the NFL (Buffalo Bills fans) who wouldn't know a winner from a loser from a hoser. Those clowns thought they were going 13-3 after signing Dockery last March, and we're supposed to take their opinion about Grilliams as valid???

You need new friends, Bud - your Buffalo friends are idiots.

Posted by: TheCrickets007 | January 27, 2008 5:02 AM | Report abuse

Now we need to find viable replacements for basically our entire secondary + Rogers and McIntosh (until they are ready to return) and our aging OL, and a DE.

Posted by: goosedude | January 26, 2008 02:41 PM

Let's see - that's about 11 starters needed, according to you. Last time we checked, the Redskins have six draft picks this year and are $20 million over the cap, with no guarantee they can even clear up enough room to sign draft picks. Even with a draft success rate of slightly more than 50%, it will only take three years to accumulate the pieces we need NOW (not to mention the players we will need to replace next year and the year after).

These calculations also don't take into account any additional starters we will need to be able to run an entirely new offensice scheme. Well, that should be no problem either - just add another year to the calculation.

So, let's see - it looks like it will be somewhere around 2011 before the team might be ready to compete again for a playoff spot? Excellent! What a tremendous organizational effort by the management and ownership! Perfect!

I will go to the games.
I will buy Skins merchandise.
I will support the team as a fan.
All these haters might have to eat their words if the Skins kick ass next year or the following year.
I will not hate on Snyder as you all have. It's his money and his team and he's trying to make it a winner again.
I say bring back Lavar Arrington...he's the man who was wronged by Greg Williams in the worst way.

Posted by: Redskins2881 | January 26, 2008 03:02 PM

Sorry about the ad hominem, but you're an idiot. People like you deserve an owner like Snyder. Come back and tell us how you're feeling if the team is 3-13 in 2008, okay?

Jason Campbell and I hope Jim Zorn doesn't show up with a 720 page playbook.

Posted by: rw-c | January 26, 2008 03:40 PM

Since Zorn hasn't been an NFL Offensive Coordinator before, he may show up with NO playbook. We'll see plays like "run an out pattern to the gatorade bucket".

1) Getting rid of Wiliams was dumb.

2) Hiring an O-coordinator before a head coach was dumber.

3) Not hiring a legitimate general manager and letting him build the team is the dumbest part of the whole thing.

Neither Snyder nor Cerrato know jack about football and until they understand that, the team will continue to be in chaos.

I feel truely sorry for the players because they pulled together and toughed it out through a very hard year. In return, the maniac is now back driving the bus.

Dare I say it?...Go Dallas!

Please explain how an owner of a company that relies on customers to remain in business can consistently disrupt the organization's progress by routinely making bad decisions and causing complete upheaval. I wonder how long fans will support a team that is owned by a person who cares more about himself (not removing Cerato from the team) and removing those coaches who had managed to overcome extreme hardships and make the playoffs. Now all the players will have to learn yet another offense and defense (what's it now 7 or 8 offenses since Snyder took over?). If I was a player I would demand a trade or to be released from contract to play from a team and owner that is interested in developing a team not tearing it apart year after year (6-7 Head Coaches since his arrival). Fans should boycott the Preseason games and show an empty stadium to prove a point: Develop the team not your psyche! Am still amazed that the team has most of its draft picks. Bet he trades them away ....

Disgruntled in Delaware!

It's a shame that a weasle named Daniel Snyder has ruined one of the greatest franchises in the NFL.
Gregg williams will not have any trouble finding a job. There are 31 other NFL franchises that are run better than the Redskins. I feel sorry for all the lifelong fans that have to endure Snyder's personal "Fantasy Football" endeavor.
It is great to see all the re-airs of Super Bowls XVII,XXII AND XXVI this weekend. As long as Snyder runs this team this might be all the Super bowls we will ever have....... Danny, quit firing all the good people and tell that guy in the mirror to step back and let some "football smart" people run this team!

Posted by: mcgiller | January 27, 2008 12:44 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, lost my head for a minute there.

My "Go Dallas" comment is born of 2 years of frustration being stranded in Dallas because of my job.

As a life long Skins fan, it has been unbearable to watch the well intentioned but "football incompetent" Snyder destroy my team.

Mr. Snyder, if you care as much about the Redskins as you say you do, PLEASE hire an experienced GM to run the team! Then get out of his way and let him do his job.

I would love it if, for once, Joe Gibbs truly said what is on his mind instead of always being meek, humble and the "good guy".

Joe - Your ex-employer just humiliated and fired your two top employees - the very men YOU hired and who stuck with you through thick and thin. He treated them shamefully and throughout most of this debacle you have been silent, other than to say you were "praying" for the coaches. Well, I guess God wasn't listening today, Joe.

So, enough with the prayers and the references to God, Joe. I'm sick of it, truth be told. It's very easy to hide behind your religious sentiments as opposed to stepping up the plate and speaking out.

I would love to hear you once, just once, call out Dannyboy for what he truly is - an egomaniacal little jerk who is systematically destroying this franchise. Apologize, openly, to the coaches that he treated in such a shameful way. Tell us, truthfully, that you thought GW deserved to be your successor and that you lobbied on his behalf with the Emperor. Speak to the fans, Joe, and convince us that you (unlike Vinny) were not "bought" by Snyder. Until you do, I will continue to hold you at least partly responsible for what has happened. And I will always harbor doubts about your professed loyalty to and love of the team, the coaches, the players and the fans. Why? Because you have been conspicuously silent in questioning anything that this joke of an owner has done or is doing to your beloved team, coaches, players and fans. In fact, you were quite outspoken about your closeness to and admiration for him, at your retirement press conference. Until you say otherwise, I can only assume you still feel that way.

So, Joe, the gold crown that you once wore in DC is sadly tarnished.

www.igaitan.com : Snyder, owner of the Redskins, is up to something. Even though we all as redskins do not agree or understand at the moment.. I'm pretty sure he knows what hes doing. He wants to win obviously. He grew up a Redskins fan, and ends up buying his team. Imagen what you would do if you were the owner of the team you love. You would interview EVERYONE and upgrade EVERYTHING as possible, no matter what the cost. This man is intelligent. Regardless if you don't think his football IQ is that great. I think it is. I trust in what hes doing honestly. I love my skins. i love them as if they were part of my family. These damn skins man. They make me so happy, but can make me so mad sometimes. What I think the man Snyder did, was watch all of our games from week 1 to week 17... and do you remember how you felt most of those losses we had?... WTF WAS THAT CALL!!!... and I guess that's what Snyder felt again, and handled that situation. He brought in new/young blood into our family. I don't want to wait years for it to work either.. but I'm pretty sure Snyder doesn't want to either. But Mr. Daniel is up to something. He has the money obviously... shoot.. he'll sell his whole house, his cars, his pets, and his boats to get the best head coach if that's what it takes. He might be even be plotting for Belichick, who knows?.. Snyder is not rushing like every other owner is doing. He got our coordinators. He better have wrote into their contract of 60 hour weeks. and now we're waiting on who's going to run us into glory. My skins, your skins, for glory.
