Grimm of the Redskins' Hogs is elected to Hall of Fame

Finally, there's room for a Hog in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Russ Grimm, a guard on the famed offensive line from the Redskins' teams that went to four Super Bowls and won three in the 1980s and early '90s, was elected to the Hall of Fame this afternoon in south Florida. Grimm joins Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, Rickey Jackson, John Randle, Dick LeBeau and Floyd Little in the seven-member class of 2010.

From the Redskins' championship teams, Grimm will join Coach Joe Gibbs, running back John Riggins, wide receiver Art Monk and cornerback Darrell Green in the Hall of Fame. Throughout those years, the Hogs were a constant for a team whose three Super Bowl triumphs came with three different quarterbacks.

"That offensive line had a great run for a long time," former general manager Charley Casserly told Mark Maske recently. "The players changed, but that group was the foundation for four Super Bowl teams. It's hard to believe you can't get one guy into the Hall of Fame."

The induction ceremony will be held Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio.

Maske has further details and updates.

Not to mention the Head Hog, Joe Bugel.

How is it possible that Joe Jacoby and Dave Butz are not even close?? Jacoby was awesome for many years and defined the position of tackle for his era. Butz was a fixture for a long time and arguably the best nose tackle of his era

At last, a HOG has made the HOF. Congrats to Russ Grimm, now they need to work on Joseph Erwin Jacoby.

What a joke. The only football players superior to Charles Haley in that group are Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice. He was better than Rickey Jackson or John Randle.

Posted by: SCOTSGUARDS | February 6, 2010 6:02 PM | Report abuse

YEAH! Congratulations Russ. Well deserved.

Kind of wish Coryell had made it, but happy for Russ.

And YES, let's start working on Jacoby.

HTTR good job by the HOF committee. Congratulation to you Mr. Grimm.

Dude, take your ass to a Cowpies blog if you wanna stump for Charles f-ing Haley. If Art Monk had to wait 8 years for enshrinement, surely Haley can wait a couple more.

Anyways, it's all about Russ Grimm up here...a hearty congrats to the chief Hog! We gotta roll to Canton in full force, RI Nation! We gotta go represent and try to offset the infestation of Cowdung fans!

Wish it was the job here.

I'm as happy as the next guy to get the massive upgrade from Zorn to Shanny, but can you imagine the Redskin euphoria in Canton with Russ Grimm getting enshrined in the HoF on Saturday and making his head coaching debut for the Skins on Sunday? That would really be something to see...

Posted by: brownwood26 | February 6, 2010 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Congrats to Mr. Grimm.

And everyone that's conquered a heaping pile of snow today.
Were it not for a neighbor with a front-loader, I'd be plotting how to make snowshoes out of tennis racquets.

I'm ready to outnumber Cowboys fans in Canton....

Posted by: 4thFloor | February 6, 2010 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Great to hear that...I didn't think he had a shot this year.

Posted by: Cavalier83 | February 6, 2010 6:16 PM | Report abuse

Kudos to Russ Grimm - it's about time. And as other posters have noted, Big Joe Jacoby should be there with him. Boss Hog Joe Bugel once referred to Big Joe as "Route 66". I think even I could have scored running behind him.

Congratulations!

Hail to the Hogs, Congratulations Russ Grimm.

I hope the fans represent at the HOF ceremony this year just like we did for Art and Darrell last year. That would be awesome to see again!

Next up, Joe Jacoby and Brian Mitchell for class of '11

Even us Cowboy fans are glad to see Russ Grimm in the NFL HOF! Congrats to Russ, thanks for the memories of a great rivalry.

Yahoo for Russ! Yahoo for Hogs!!

Posted by: RomoLongballs | February 6, 2010 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Happy for all the Hogs.

Posted by: Gweez | February 6, 2010 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Predator, I'm not sure we'll see B-Mitch get in. The HoF has a nasty bias against special teamers...I mean, if Ray Guy and Steve Tasker can't even get a whiff, I'm not sure how B-Mitch does. I think all three of those guys deserve to get in.

Posted by: brownwood26 | February 6, 2010 6:38 PM | Report abuse

Wonderful, overdue news. Congrats to a true Redskin. From when that meant something.

Hail Russ! Long overdue!

Posted by: Sirius2 | February 6, 2010 7:18 PM | Report abuse

I am so happy that Russ Grimm was elected to the hall today. I believe the conventional wisdom is that he was leader of the Hogs. My only regret is that Joe Jacoby, who changed the way offensive line play is done, should have been elected to the hall long ago. I hope that Grimm's election will not make it harder for Jake to get in. But I bet he has to wait a long time to have a credible chance.

Here is my list of Redskins that deserve to be considered for the Hall -- as best as I can tell, none of them have drawn serious consideration:

Len Hauss: 6 Pro Bowls
Chris Hanburger: 9 Pro Bowls
Larry Brown: better than Floyd Little who just got in
Joe Jacoby: Hog who blocked against laurence taylor and reggie white
Jim Lachey: Probably the best of all the Hogs
Dave Butz: NFL All decade team, 1980's
Jerry Smith: Held TD record for TE for 30 years
Gary Clark: As good as Andre Reed or michael irvin

Posted by: zcezcest1 | February 6, 2010 8:15 PM | Report abuse

The "whole" fun bunch should be in the Hall, too. I miss my Redskins of the 80's....

Posted by: Moontock | February 6, 2010 9:29 PM | Report abuse

Wow, between Skins fans for Jacoby, 'Boys fans for Emmitt, 49ers fans for Rice (and just fans of Rice in general), Steelers fans for LeBeau.......yikes! it's going to be crowded. I hope Floyd Little's family already has their tickets, or they might not get a seat! =) If they had put one of the Giants from the '90s in this year as well (not that anymore need to get in) or one of the Bills from those bridesmaid teams, it would have been epic!

Posted by: ts35 | February 6, 2010 10:14 PM | Report abuse

Ack! Was reading too many 'put Jacoby in' posts. I meant to say Grimm!

Congrats Russ!!
