Gruden takes himself out of mix for Redskins job

Jon Gruden removed himself from consideration for the Redskins' head coaching job -- and any other coaching position in the NFL next season -- saying in simple terms, "No, I'm not coaching."

"I'm going to stay with the team I'm on. The only team I'm going to coach is my 13-year-old son's flag football team," Gruden said on ESPN's pregame coverage of Monday night's game between the Redskins and Giants. "I'm excited about it so get ready, guys."

Gruden's name was circulated heavily after the Redskins hired Bruce Allen as their general manager. Gruden coached under Allen in Oakland and in Tampa Bay before joining the "Monday Night Football" broadcast booth this season. He signed a contract extension last month, and apparently intends to honor it.

With Mike Holmgen reportedly accepting a front-office job with Cleveland, former Denver coach Mike Shanahan seems to be much more likely successor to Jim Zorn with each passing day. (Technically, Zorn and the assistants on his staff are all under contract for next season.)

Gruden also took a moment to sympathize a bit with Zorn's plight. Even with a handful of games remaining, Zorn's tenure in Washington is already referred to in the past tense.

"I can't imagine anybody handling it better," Gruden said. "A lot has gone wrong. They've had a lot of guys get hurt, they took the playcalling away from him, they hired a new GM at midseason here. He's handled it with class and dignity, and I think a lot of us young coaches ... can really learn from it. I've been really impressed with the way he's handled this tough year."

Gruden's name had been tied to the Redskins largely because of his close relationship with Allen. Just before kickoff, Gruden spoke about his former boss' strengths, hitting a lot of the points that others have touched on the past few days.

"He understands the tradition of the Redskins better than anybody," Gruden said. "His dad, George Allen, created it, but Bruce Allen is smart, he's experienced and he's got a lot to bring to the table. He's a winner. He's won five division titles in the last 10 years with two different teams, and that's impressive. Not a lot of people can say that.

"He understands the salary cap. I know where they were with the cap in Tampa when he got there, and I know where they are today. He's phenomenal. He's got a lot of people skills. But I think three things: No. 1, he's got a great working relationship with Dan Snyder. Secondly, I think he's gonna hire the right coach. Whether it be two days or two months, he's gonna find the right coach for the Washington Redskins. And third, he's going to create a very positive vibe around Redskins Park, and I think they're excited about that."

Apparently, Allen will do all of that without Gruden on his staff.

Thanks, ESPN, for showing the close up of Theismann's leg getting snapped. It made me just as sick as the first time I saw it.

Gano's foot looks just fine.

Got home just in time - not to see kick off, but of Theismann's injury - seems like an odd "highlight" even for the anniversary year.

Not that they'll ever call such things, but on the middle screen to #44, #60 was 5 yds. downfield blocking Fletcher.

Posted by: fan-o-matic | December 21, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

now it will be interesting to see if JC panics, like he has in the past, and forgets his mechanics (progressions and check downs). When he is behind...he passes short for worthless yards or overthrows. The Giants, with a 2 score lead, are going to sit back and watch him read once to his primary and throw.... I would bet one pick or fumble (INT) before halftime. And two more in the second half, if the Skins stay behind by more than two TDs.

The one silver lining is that this performance should finally shut door on the claim that this is a "good football team". And the other silver lining is that this performance should disabuse of the notion that the team doesn't need significant changes. Whatever carried the team against DEN, DAL, PHL (the second time), NO, and OAK is faltering here.

It could be that, given the change in the front office, the team might just see themselves as lame ducks. I don't know.

Yeah John (Gruden) the Bucs had a high payroll when Allen got there but were Super Bowl Champs.

The Bucs are 40mill under the cap now and looking at a 2-14 season.

If that is the case pay me to gutt out a teams payroll, given 5 years I think I can turn the Yankees 200mill payroll to the Marlins 30mill.
