Halftime: Redskins 21, Bills 3

DeAngelo Hall made the beginning of the second quarter a little easier for the Redskins second-team offense.

The reserves, with Rex Grossman under center, took advantage of the great field possession following Hall's interception return with a Keiland Williams 2-yard touchdown run 53 seconds into the second quarter. The delayed run up the gut gave the Redskins a 14-3 and capped a four-play, 12-yard scoring drive that lasted all of 1:26.

Artis Hicks and left tackle Trent Williams were the only starters on the field for the drive. Right tackle Stephen Heyer, who started tonight, was also on the field but he started in place of Jammal Brown.

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards remained in the game for the team's third possession, which resulted in a three-and-out.

Brandon Banks, who is looking to make the 53-man roster for his returning skills, returned the Redskins' first punt of the preseason and looked impressive. The shifty 5-foot-7 Banks returned the ball about 20 yards but a block-in-the-back penalty brought it back to the Redskins 23.

Grossman and the offense took it from there, driving 77 yards on 10 plays in 4:07 to extend the Redskins lead to 21-3. On third and goal from the Bills 9-yard line, the backup quarterback pumped to his right before throwing across his body to tight end Fred Davis in the front corner of the end zone -- a pass that probably should've been picked off.

Devin Thomas saw his first action at wide receiver on the drive, entering the game with 8:30 remaining in the quarter. Thomas dropped the first pass intended for him.

Albert Haynesworth entered the game on the ensuing Bills possession and let his presence known from the get-go. Following a false start penalty on Buffalo, Haynesworth occupied two blockers as Perry Riley darted through the Bills line to force an Edwards incompletion. The drive resulted in another Buffalo three-and-out.

Washington started its next drive on the 16-yard line, and three plays in, Grossman found Thomas for his first catch: an 11-yard gain on third and 5. However, a Trent Williams penalty three plays later for not lining up on the line of scrimmage derailed the drive after Grossman and Keiland Williams connected for a big gain.

Buffalo followed with another inconsequential drive and the Redskins ran the clock down to halftime, taking a 21-3 lead to the locker room.

Late night at the office here in the plains of north Texas, drinking Diet Cokes, but the dulcet tones of Sam and Sonny are coming through the speakers and this is nice, very, very nice.

was banks td a punt return or screen pass??

i think mk12 and DT11 should be very nervous....

If our front seven can jump on D*ll*s like this and our O-Line can play anything near as well...

(Not going to jinx it)

I wasn't really caught up before the game......are Larry Johnson and Wille Parker "active"?

Posted by: dlhaze1 | August 13, 2010 9:33 PM | Report abuse

What's left to see tonight? We've seen a couple of passes for TDs, a run for a TD, an punt return for a TD, an interception.

So I guess we still need to see a fumble recovery, maybe a pic-6?

I bet LJ starts next week and CP sits. Torain and Williams will get most of carries in preseason.

If you are gonna leave Rex in there, I wanna see him load up the long ball. Few QBs in the league have as nice a long ball as Grossman, for all his rocky history

Nice play by DT albeit against 3rd stringers.

Even our DE's are catching the ball.

Is this some sort of crazy cat offense?

Posted by: Pepper5 | August 13, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Interesting little blip on NFL.com--they attributed that touchdown reception to DE Jeremy Jarmon

Posted by: boothintexas | August 13, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Wooooo!

Yeah, yeah, the Bills secondary right now is probably 3rd stringers, but winning is still better than losing.

Posted by: freakzilla | August 13, 2010 9:43 PM | Report abuse

I stand corrected. Great move by DT. The only blemish has been KO coverage.

Ok. Its the Bills, and primarily their scrubs. Nonetheless, this is a very pleasant way to open up the 2010 campaign.

The starters looked really good after they gave up a march down the field.

In fairness to Mr Beck, Rhino and Danger Will Robinson are getting blown up and not giving him much to work with.

Good thing hes not starting then.

On serious note... i watched the raidahs v cowpokers highlights... JC was his usual self. made a long completion a yard and a half out of bounds... and stood still in the pocket while a guy walked his man back and slammed JC in the dirt.
