Halftime Report

The first half was less than the kind of showcase for sharp, effective play that you'd expect to see at this point, at least from the offense. Defense played pretty well.

Here's a quick update:
Campbell 4 of 10 for 28 yards; Collins 7 of 11 for 45; Devine one pass, intercepted.

Betts, who suffered a mild knee strain, rushed six times for 34 yards. Cartwright had six carries for 90 (longest of 73) and caught three passes for 10 yards.

Sellers caught two passes for 15 yards, Moss one for 13 and Yoder 1 for 12.

Redskins converted one of six third downs; had nine first downs, 199 total yards, 126 rushing yards, 73 passing yards.

Jets converted one of seven third downs; had seven first downs; 110 total yards; 28 rushing yards and 82 passing yards. Favre, 5 of 6 for 48 and a TD.

Penalties
Redskins 3 for 30
Jets 3 for 22

Time of possession
Redskins 15:25
Jets 14:35

I keep thinking about Santana's drop on our first drive. That killed the drive, and we gave them a short field on their TD drive.

Second drive, we moved the ball pretty well. I'm inclined to think that Jason's two overthrows (back of the endzone & sideline route) were intentional, which is actually comforting, because last year I think he would have tried to force them.

Hope Ladell is okay.

All in all, the mistakes that the first stringers did make were the sort that could be overcome in a full game. Hard to get too upset about some of the secondary play, given some of the glaring absences.

Time to grab another beer and get ready for the Marcus Mason show (I hope).

How the Pete did I double post? Oops.

Posted by: freakzilla | August 16, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

I would not mind Mason worked into the game plan in a way that gets him replacing Betts in 2-3 years.

Posted by: Alex35332 | August 16, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse

I would like to see what Mason can do with the first team.

freak-

you nailed it.

marcus mason fits the mold. he's aggressive, low to the ground, and competitive. i like him.

the first half was by no means sharp, but it's preseason.

and we're blogging.

PS loved rob jackson jacking clemens. kareem more looked solid and i doubt chad rinehart tries that little 360 again. (if collins is lucky)

Posted by: freakzilla | August 16, 2008 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Brooks punt was 59 yards. That would be two punts for Frosty.

Posted by: Mull It | August 16, 2008 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: freakzilla | August 16, 2008 9:36 PM | Report abuse

This is exactly what we needed. A little wake up call to the team. Let them know that if they don't show up, a 4-12 team will beat you.
This is what the preseason is for. The real test will be how we respond in practice this week. If we come out sharp against carolina, this will be a good year. If not, get your draft caps ready.

Posted by: SMACK | August 16, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: freakzilla | August 16, 2008 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, but it's not the penalties. Both teams have had six. Skins 50 yards, Jets 42 yards. It's something else. The 'Skins suck tonight more than the Jets suck tonight.

Posted by: Mull It | August 16, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

To show you how importent Pre0season is: Miami 19 Jacksonville 0. The skins have had an extra week of 2 a days then most of the league. We should have expected this kind of game. Nice of the Jets to gift wrap it for us though.

Curzon, if they did, then Nugent is a scary good kicker (and a good actor, too, judging from the reaction shot).

Maybe, but I'll give most of them the benefit of the doubt for one night after an extra week of work in the fun in the sun. I do have two major concerns though. Jensen better start blocking like its Ramsey back there and we really need Landrey.

Mason may make the team, but he will not see any playing time in the backfield barring injury. Let's not make him Walter Payton just yet!

Posted by: sicwidit | August 16, 2008 10:10 PM | Report abuse

From NFL.com -- quick takes on the game:

Rookie WR Devin Thomas has a ways to go: The second-round pick out of Michigan State missed the first two preseason games with a hamstring injury and just returned to practice this week. In his debut, he committed a costly special teams penalty, got cut down shy of the 20-yard-line on a kickoff and failed to come down with a pair of sideline throws.

It's going to be tough to cut RB Marcus Mason: The Redskins' fourth-string rusher has been extremely impressive so far in the preseason. With Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts getting limited carries, Mason has had plenty of opportunities and he has taken advantage of those chances. After rushing for 178 yards through the first two games, he added 75 more against the Jets.

Posted by: chasefour808 | August 16, 2008 10:40 PM | Report abuse

I think the Colt Brennan thing is understated. I think Vinny should get some credit for this pickup. By no means am I saying that Colt is John Elway, but it's refreshing to see young talent in the system. We've got the rickety old vet in Collins, the young stud in JC and the "kid" in Colt. This is how you build a team for the future. Under Gibbs, we had

Ramsey, Brunell, and Campbell
Brunell, Campbell and Collins

Colt is not ready to start in this league with live bullets, but he will be one day.

Each NFL Team has scouts at these pre-season games.

Any DE that can rush the passer, if we put him on the Practice Squad he will be picked up by someone.

So in my opinion if they are thinking of Rob Jackson on the PC that would be a mistake. Better keep him, and then put Tryon on PC and see if he develops. Cut him next year if he is not any better.

Well there sure is room for improvement among the Redskins top five draft picks:

Devin Thomas: Zip as a receiver, worse as a gunner tonite.

Fred Davis: An undrafted free agent TE, Goode, is outplaying him.

Malcolm Kelly: came in out of shape. Got Hurt.

J.T. Tryon: If this guy was a undrafted free agent, he'd be cut by now.

Chad Rinehart: Gave up two sacks, but has been impressive to date. Future starting OG.

Of the rest of the rooks: They must like Crummey, since they've moved him to 2nd string backup center. ORT Clark just quietly goes about his business. DE Rob Jackson? Think he'll make the team, afraid he'd be plucked off the Practice Squad. Brennan? Hand the man a clipboard and stand him near Zorn, he's on the team. Horton appears the best of the DBs to my unpracticed eye. And anyway, in college, he put something like eight guys out of games with hard hits.

For once in my life, I agree with Steve Czaban...the more we see of this Zorn era the more Gibbs 2.0 will be tarnished. It's amazing how in one draft and maybe two off-seasons we've got some talent.

Could it be that Vinny was not really the man when Gibbs was here? With as good as this draft class is and the restraint in FA, maybe Gibbs was the trigger man for Lloyd, Archuleta, Duckett, etc...this isn't the Vinny we knew.

Seriously, they don't game plan for these games. it's musical chairs out there.
The only thing I've ever wondered about, is why have a young QB, WR, or RB play only against 2nd and 3rd stringers. you don't know what they could do unless the play on ther 1st units.

Done with tequila tonight. Half a bottle is more than enough chased by three beers. Once my house stops spinning I am off to bed. That may be awhile yet though!!!!

Every game give us less points than the game before. Should this be something to worry about??

Both the offense and D looked bad tonight. Hopefully this is the game that get's us ready for the rest of the games, especially when they count.

+++BUT is anyone else worried about this defense? They have not stopped ANYONE so far...Teams just walk up and down the field no matter what unit is in....

Posted by: Leevi | August 16, 2008 11:14 PM++++

A healthy LaRon immediately shores up the DBs. But if his Hammie goes south, so does the defense. They got NO ONE to replace him at Free Safety.\

At the risk of getting everyone steamed at me again, my biggest concern remains the undersized DEs. Yes, with Landry patrolling centerfield and the much improved pass rush, the skins should be strong on third and Must Pass. What worries me if they may never get there.

I see power teams running off tackle all day, pounding inside the light DEs and at the injury prone outide LBs and CBs.

I think the skins will win games where they get ahead early, lose the ones where they dont, as a general rule.

Whether they win close gams late depends on whether Campbell develops skills in that area, something we have yet to see.

Stock on the rise/Making the most of it; Jackson DE (Second sack looked STRONG), McMullen (all he does is make plays). Colt 45 Brennan (Luck favors the bold, fortune favors the bold??, athletic, rolls the pocket, can make the jumpr throw off his back foot. CONFIDENCE makes a good leader.

RB Mason. Good cuts, good runner, local, must keep.

Not so much; Rogers. McIntosh. Soups (same darn high throws to his only target Sentena Moss) Holds on to the ball too long (with Jansen in there his throws better be quick!!) Jansen is done. Jason Taylor looking too slight (slighter than I remember?? to handle the run) Not making the impact I expected when he is in there. Brittle ol Betts. Randy Thomas hobbling on the screen pass. No way any of these guys make it 16 games. Can we say goodbye to Devine now?? The Big Skychief Rookie Rhinhart Cowboy from Iowa arguing with Tollins after he let Tollins take a hit to the spine...embarassing. Who's running the O-line with Buges out on personal business?

Overall; Better get some of the big rookie targets on the field ASAP. Moss, El, Thrash have a way of disappearing when Soupy panics. He can't see under 5"11 when the rush is on. He can't throw lower than that either. Anyone see the Jets LB pick up lil moss and do the dwarf throw on him after the missed pass/penalty? Soupy does not roll or scramble out athletically, instead he sits in the pocket and gets rocked. When he does get rocked he writhes around on the ground too long to be a leader. He locks on Moss all the time. Where was Pro-Bowler Cooley? Where are the dump off routes? Where are the progression reads? Zorn has work to do.

Posted by: DTC | August 17, 2008 2:18 AM | Report abuse

Agreed that Campbell was too late with the check downs. However, I'd rather that then watch the Todd go straight to the check down all day. I'll take a quarter of sub 50% completions over the screen pass that gets completed for a 5-yard loss. The line has to give him a quarter-second more time - getting beat one on one just won't do it - no fancy stunts or blitz.

Don't know if not have ARE in slot was that big a factor - seems like it. IF both Moss and ARE are healthy the passing game seems to be in much more rhythm (going back to last year). I think any regular season game where Portis, Randle El, and Landry aren't playing we're pretty much screwed and should expect similar results.

The 2nd rounders don't need to show me anything yet. I still don't know what folks are expecting. If by the 7th game of the year we're still seeing nothing then maybe we got something to complain about but I aint 'spectin' nothin' until 2009.

Maybe, but I'm thinking that a 13-10 come-from-behind win, gift wrapped by the Jets' kicker, falls a little bit short of "adversary" and way-short of adversity. But after a half bottle of tequila and three beer chasers, this game will definitely show us how well Curzon handles adversity. And, if he's married, he may also have an adversary who he won't be allowed to handle.

Those of you hating on Vinnie for drafting a punter, Brooks, in the sixth round need to realize that the Jets' kicker last night, Nugent, was drafted in the second round.

And for those of you hating on Suisham, who the 'Skins signed as a free agent (after he was cut by Dallas), he is 41 of 50 in field goal attempts (81%) compared to Nugent who is 75 of 91 (82%).

Posted by: Mull It | August 17, 2008 8:05 AM | Report abuse

Did Suisham redeem his missed field goal from earlier, yes. Is he 100% the greatest kicker we ever had, no.

Brooks, still a good punter, not sure he would ever have been drafted though.

Did anyone ever claim that Suisham was "100% greatest kicker we ever had"? No.

If we hadn't drafted Brooks, can we feel confident that he would have signed with the 'Skins and not one of the other 32 teams in the league? No.

Zeese, did you get up on the grumpy side of the bed this morning or on the contrarian side of the bed?

Offense 26 players

3 QB (Campbell, Collins, Brennan)
9 OL (Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas, Jansen, Heyer, Rinehart, Crummey, Fabini)
3 TE (Cooley, Yoder, Davis)
4 RB (Portis, Betts, Cartwright, Mason)
5 WR (Moss, ARE, Trash, Kelly, Thomas)
1 FB Sellers

The last spot goes to either another FB (Nemo) or WR (McMullen, Mix).

The case for Nemo:
With only one FB on the team if Sellers gets hurt some of the short yardage plays will be eliminated because there will be no running option at the FB position. Nemo has been a very good lead blocker this preseason for Mason. He’s also a good special teamer. If he’s cut Nemo most likely will end up with the Titans because of EB.

The case for (McMullen, Mix):
Another big WR to improve red zone efficiency would be nice. From what I’ve read, Kelley seems to be the real deal in the red zone. I haven’t heard as much about Thomas. Therefore, if Kelley gets hurt, will the red zone production revert to last year’s WR production?. McMullen has been more productive this season, but I’m giving the edge to Mix if he’s healthy at the end of preseason because he was a productive on special teams down the stretch last year, and I’m thinking he’ll be that way again this year.

I would pick Nemo or Mix to make the team because of their special teams play.

PS ( Devin Clark, Jason Goode, Horace Gant, Geisinger)

Defense 24 players

9 DL (Griffin, Monty, Carter, Taylor, Golston, Alexander, Evens, James, Jackson)
5 LB ( Washington, Fletcher, McIntosh, Blades, Campbell)
5 CB ( Smoot, Springs, Rogers, Torrence, Richardson)
4 S (Landry, Doughty, Moore, Horton)

The last spot goes to another LB (vet FA pick up), another CB (vet FA pick up), another S (Fox, Hamilton)

I think the skins will get a vet LB to fill the last spot. Going into the season with only 5 LBs is a risky proposition especially with McIntosh’s injury history. Springs could rotate to the FS spot if the situation warrants it. Also I am leery of vet CBs pick ups after the 2006 season.

PS (Tryon, Hamilton, Fincher, Wallace)

Alex,

Do you know the last NFL draft in which at least one punter wasn't chosen? 1998 -- ten years ago -- the Payton Manning draft. Every year since then, a punter has been chosen -- usually two and sometimes three.

Brooks will prove to be one of Vinny's better draft picks, and a steal in the sixth round.

The Steelers drafted a punter in the 4th round last year. Brooks has not had any terrible punts yet and will be comforting to not have to think every kick could be a potential shank.

TWISI, what about Sinclair as an LB? Nemo gets cut since Yoder can pull FB duties if necessary. Mix & McMullen is a toss-up as Mix can be a special teams ace, but McMullen has been more productive over the course of the entire preseason. As a former Wahoo, I'm pulling for McMullen, but I would understand the argument for selecting Mix.

Not only did the Steelers draft a punter, they traded up to do it! It's almost a mortal lock that the punter that wins the Ray Guy award gets drafted, and our boy Brooks is no different. Personally, I'm glad to have him!

I think he would be exposed if he had to start for any period of time. I wouldn't be suprised if Nemo gets cut, however if he does and Sellers gets injured I think the running plays that were geared towards the FB (FB dives and other short yradage and goal line plays) would not be an option for the offense.

Trouble is, Brooks had a bad night last night. Except for Goode, who may have made the practice squad, and tackle Clark, and Jackson who looks like the find of the draft for DC, none of the rookies had a memorable night last night.

That makes it tougher come final cutdowns, as the Skins HAVE to play their starting units at least a half next week, and it will be tough to get a read on the young kids at this point.

I would hate to have to make the final cuts this year, particularly with Buges off premises with his family tragedy. Who better to decide which young lineman stays and which one goes?

Wasn't Sellers the only FB that was on the depth chart last year as well? I think they managed, although I know Sellers was injured during the course of a game or two last season. Had the Skins been able to draft that FB from West Virginia (the one who busted himself upside his head with his own helmet on the sidelines), then I would see the team keeping two FBs on the depth chart..

BTW, Brooks punted 6 times for an avg of 43 yds & a net avg of 33.8 yds and a long of 59 yds... what's Frost's career long punt??? Also, Brooks appears to be corralling Albright's snaps well enough to the point where Suisham didn't miss any FGs last night. At this point I would hope Frost would be sent on his way so he could potentially catch on with another squad.

The battle between Brooks and Frost could come down to the holding. Suisham is very comfortable with Frost holding...Brooks...not so much.

But I still think Brooks will beat out Frost.

Maybe they could try him kicking field goals for the Jets? After Nugent's performance last night, the Jets fans are screaming for a change.

And, Lisa, I doubt that Suisham is going to have much say in who will be the next punter.

I think Brooks is a lock as well, unless he starts shanking everything over the next two weeks. To me Tryon's the only draft pick who looks like he might not make it. He's headed to the practice squad in my opinion. They could try and put Horton on the PS but I think they like him too much to risk it. Same with Jackson. While I'd like to see more out of Thomas and Kelly, in reality I'm not expecting an immediate impact. I just hope they get and stay healthy and manage to make contributions this year. Rarely do rookie WR's make an immediate impact. Look at Braylon Edwards of the Browns. First two years - injured and a non-factor, now he's a stud. Calvin Johnson with Detroit was hailed as the next Jerry Rice - rookie year - nada. Those guys were much higher rated prospects and they struggled so hard as it is we have to be patient with Thomas and Kelly.

I'd be happy if the 2 rookies combined for what Calvin Johnson did as a rookie. 48 recs, 756 yds and 4 td's. He missed 1 game due to injury. So far all we got is a pulled hammy, knee surgery and not knowing you can not run out of bounds on punt coverage.

Funny, the post has an article today hyping Betts and talking how they will involve him more in the offense compared to last year. I'd much rather have a proven commodity in Betts than an unknown in Mason. Mason can make the roster but having Betts in case CP gets dinged up is important.
