Hall, Sellers, Haynesworth won't play

Defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth, cornerback DeAngelo Hall and fullback Mike Sellers are each out for Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders, Coach Jim Zorn said after Friday's practice.

Haynesworth could be seen wearing a walking boot in the locker room. Haynesworth (ankle) and Hall (knee) have been fighting injuries during the past few weeks, although this is the only time both will be missing from the same game since the Redskins lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 29. Sellers (thigh) was hurt on the final offensive play of last week's loss to the New Orleans Saints.

"It's very concerning; Mike Sellers is a concern, too, because he's our starting fullback," Zorn said. "But one of the things that always happens is the guys that surround those players -- the guys that have to come in, and the guys that have to surround him -- have done a great job.

"There will be a little more communication that has to go on in certain situations. And then not having them there, not having their presence, will definitely be felt. So, that's what we're going to have to do. I'm just going to be fired up about who's out there, disappointed about not having those three guys, but excited about who we'll have out there and what we're trying to do."

Tight end Todd Yoder is expected to pitch in at fullback in Sellers's absence. The Redskins have only two tight ends on the active roster -- Yoder and Fred Davis -- so an injury to either one during the game could disrupt the offense and eliminate certain formations.

"We'd have to play a little more single back with four wide receivers" if that happens, Zorn said. "We do what we can and we have plans for those kind of things, so we make adjustments as we go along."

* Defensive tackle Cornelius Griffin, defensive end Phillip Daniels and offensive tackle Stephon Heyer are all questionable with knee injuries, although Zorn expected them to play on Sunday.

If one of the tight ends goes down, we'll just run stretch plays on 3rd & goal from the 6...like we always do.

My Lil Bro ran into Haynie, LL, Orakpo, Rocky, & Smoot at the Wizards game last night.

Haynie had a pronounced wobble in his step and LL couldn't find enough sea cows to give his number out to.

Haynie got off a MF blast at a fan for an unauthorized picture and Orakpo was more than happy to stop for a picture with anyone who asked.

I guess after Haynie and Angelina told the media and everyone else who would listen about their status for Sunday, they finally decided to tell Zorn.

I think it had more to do with the possiblity of some of the chicken heads that surrounded him ending up in the photo.

Regardless, AH definitely comes across as anything but gracious.

With Steel losing to Cleve there is hope that the Skins draft rank could improve. Cleve could beat KC and/or Oak in the next two weeks. Don't think there is realistic scene for Skins to nose ahead of StL, TB or Det. There is some hope, albeit pretty pretty slim, with Det.

Speaking of teams that stink in 2009, and what that means for 2010, next season the Skins will travel to play their counterpart in the NFC West. Sadly, the Rams are going to be that team.

For a while it looked like the Seahawks would be that team, meaning, you know, hooray for those of us who would like to see the Skins in Seattle again. But alas... stupid Seahawks... stupid Rams... stupid Redskins...

Courtesy of wiki:

The Violent Femmes were founded by bassist Brian Ritchie and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo. They became a full-fledged band upon the arrival of Gordon Gano, lead vocalist and guitarist.

In their shows, the Femmes employed a horn section called the Horns of Dilemma. Famous members included John Zorn, Dick Parry, Blaise Garza and The Dresden Dolls.

A horn player named Zorn, a lead singer named Cano, anyway you "Add it Up" there's something very creepy about this Femmes reference.

In Haynesworth's defense (though I hesitate to defend him), a sprained ankle is a whole different animal when you weigh more than 3 bills. Take it from a 330-pounder who only plays in rec leagues up in NYC. Look fwd to seeing him back on the field healthy.

Since we're talking draft up here, let me point out just one more way that Dan and Vinny have f'd up on the 2010 draft -- already.

They are counting on the expiration of the collective bargaining agreement. One of the repercussions of the CBA expiring is that lots of college underclassmen will come out early. This would make the 2010 draft class the strongest draft class in history. Some are forecasting that what is normally 3rd round talent will be there in the 5th round.

Knowing this, collecting picks to use in 2010 would have been a very smart thing to do. What did we do?

Vinny gave up a 3rd round pick in 2010 to get Jarmon. Jarmon was considered a 4th round talent. If Vinny had let Jarmon slide, he would likely have had a chance at 2nd round talent with that same pick in 2010.

When the Skins drafted Jarmon, I was OK with the move. But I didn't know that the 2010 draft was likely to be loaded because of the CBA issues. Vinny is paid a lot of $$ to know this stuff.

Its this kind of thing that tells me these guys are incompetent.

Disagree Zeke,

The league has recently started to consider a rookie salary cap to get other considerations when the go to negotiate a new CBA. Underclassmen might declare because of this rumor, which is not nearly a done deal.

Yes, the FO should have planned better in regards to getting more draft picks, but it's hard to fault them now for picking Jarmon last April, when there was no hint of a rookie salary cap.

The silver lining is that with all these top juniors coming out, some additional FA should be available to compensate for the lack of draft picks.

Since when does it benefit someone to stay the extra year in college? Him staying would not have caused him to move up to the 2nd round. If anything, it probably would have dropped his value based on KU's record.

With the weak players available at DE, he might have went a little higher. I think it was a good pick and a very good replacement for Daniels.

Mr. League Source,

I don't know where to begin, but let me start with the obvious:

You Americans invented Globalism and cornered the market on speculative trading, single handedly told the "terrorists" to "bring it," after your incompetent political machines created the very environment where violence is justified, and dragged the entire world into a deep economic downturn, and you sir...

point to my country's high unemployment rate, for what purpose?

to show what?

Yes, many Europeans, and others have modeled themselves around the perverted American ideal of a me first, militaristic hegemony, that much is true, and is most unfortunate.

If an unemployed person wants health insurance in your country they have to join the Army to kill poor people in the Middle East.

and yes, my own government has dirty hands as well.

but at least my government provides for their own people (universal access to education and health care) in a way yours NEVER will.

and no, I don't know too many Germans who want to emigrate to the United States, home of a decaying infrastructure.

Germany's unemployment figure is real. Your's is a farce - try something closer to 25% - 40% of your people are either unemployed or underemployed.

Are you kidding me?

and you Americans are so mean TO EACH OTHER, so much violence and abuse in your society.

My dear fraulein rotfrau,

Germany has its dark side. Neo-Nazi's and racists ... as I recall you still won't let many of the Middle Eastern types who have lived in Germany for decades (many are Turks and NATO ally, future EU member) become citizens? Although Germans are not as racist as say, the Japanese, they are clearly in the top 5 world-wide. Your country started two world wars, catastrophic conflicts that have succeeded in killing 20 million people in the last century. Unparalleled! Unequaled! All because your people wanted to be unified into one "pure" German state instead of a strata of duchies, provinces, and small Kingdoms scattered throughout Europe. That would include the Scandinavians, the Anglish(Normans [Norseman] Saxons and Juts.]

American for all of its faults is probably in the top 5 of least racist countries world-wide. Tolerant of race, creed, and color. Let me know when one of those middle eastern types you are so concerned for become Chancellor of Germany. Obama is president of the US.

Jarmon couldn't complete his senior year, that's why he went in the supplemental draft. He isn't a success story at this point, he is an injured unknown.

At the time, I was OK with getting Jarmon. But there was an important piece of information that I didn't have that Vinny did have. That 2010 could be a very unusual draft. He gets paid a lot of $$ to KNOW stuff like that.

The Skins have been COUNTING on an end to the CBA and should have understood the ramifications of it -- including its impact on the draft class. The #3 pick we gave up for 2010 would likely get us mid 2nd round talent. I'm not aware of anyone (other than dcwun) who considered Jarmon that sort of talent and I didn't see anything this season to suggest he is at that level.

The game between the Steelers and the Browns was pretty dull and boring but it did provide interesting food for thought. Teams that play like the Steelers did are usually teams like the Lions or the Rams that suck hard and don't give a shti. But the Steelers are coming off a SB win, with basically the same personnel. It's not so much that they don't give a shti as it is that they don't like their HC and they don't like their QB. Eight forkin sacks. It was like the Steeler OL was painting the target for other team's D smart bombs to hit. And what a joke is that comment Tomlin made earlier about how the Steelers were going to own December. What follows next is anyone's guess but the masses have spoken - they don't like Tomlin and they don't like Roethlisberger.

Once again, I do not disagree with anyone who points out the obvious crimes against humanity that the German nation has committed in the past.

and yes, as a whole we are intolerant of foreigners, which is a shame, but if you could see for yourself what the Turks did once we let them in. They brought with them a host of problems and my country had a difficult time absorbing this population, but we did nonetheless. The German born children of these refugees are far more integrated in this culture.

Posted by: zcezcest1

Look back to when the Skins first got him in the Supp. draft and almost every GM had him as a potential late first, definate 2nd round pick. To say he hasn't shown you much as a rookie is a stretch.

Too easy not to pile on because I would never interrupt a blog discussing Sauerbraten, Spätburgunder, or Alsterwasser and discuss football.

Posted by: Diesel44 | December 11, 2009 8:01 PM | Report abuse

My how far the blog has fallen. Although I guess 50 posts from some German dude may be better than 500 pro and 500 anti JC messages.

On Jarmon and the supplemental draft / 2010 draft: I agree that Jarmon was a good pick. He might have been slightly high (a number of teams later indicated that they would have taken him in the 4th round of supplemental draft) but if you think about recent 3rd rounders (Reinhart, Kevin Barnes), I would put Jarmon ahead of those guys. Perhaps this is an unfair comparison but I think even vs. other teams' 3rd rounders he will likely measure up well over time, although of course we will have to wait and see.

So while I might disagree with Zeke on Jarmon, the issue of the 2010 uncapped year that Zeke brings up is still pretty interesting to talk about.

For my part, the biggest indication to me that the Redskins are counting on an uncapped year in 2010 is the Haynesworth deal structure. It has a mind-boggling $21 MM roster bonus next year. If the cap remains at $135 MM or so, this is simply an unsustainable level. Given the perversities of the salary cap, you can easily imagine the Redskins doing the only possible thing: begging Randy Thomas and Chris Samuels not to retire (to avoid huge release fees/dead cap) while cutting or trading every player on the roster under 30 (those without big upfront bonuses / salary cap hits. This would leave Redskins with certainly the worst roster in recent memory .

Indeed, some in the league are worried that (combined with Snyder's overall brashness, big cash reserves, and youth / fact that he has never been an owner during a work stoppage) that due to this bet on an uncapped year Snyder will become an active member and perhaps even a leader of the 'hawks' in the upcoming CBA, at least at a minimum enough to prevent capped year in 2010.....

Posted by: zornskins2 | December 11, 2009 8:36 PM | Report abuse

But back to Zeke's main point: every GM worth their salt has known that 2010 has the potential to be a very rich draft for quite a while.

The smartest teams have been planning on such. To take a couple of examples, the Patriots have not the customary 2 but rather 4 1st day picks in 2010, having traded for 2 additional 2nd rounders...and the Eagles have amassed an astounding 12 draft picks for next year...meanwhile the Redskins have 5, courtesy of Jason Taylor hangover + Jarmon choices.

So while our team gets older and slower, the Eagles will be younger and faster...

Posted by: zornskins2 | December 11, 2009 8:38 PM | Report abuse

zornskins2, completely agree with your take on how much Snyder was/is counting on '10 being an uncapped year.

Until recently I had not heard rumors about a rookie salary cap, but if that was something that the owners knew was going to be an offshoot of an uncapped year, then I am w/Zeke in the misuse of the potential that 2010 draft would be.

As a fan, if an uncapped year can wipe out the sins of prior contracts (assuming that Dan has learned his lesson and structures contracts correctly going forward) and allows them to fix the holes that a capped year would have prevented, then I cannot cry too much about the lack of draft picks next year.

Well, not too much now...but in April...

Not that it matters but Gano was 13-16 in the the UFL, and his misses were from 44, 51 and 53. A lot of his kicks were from beyond 40 yards, and his kickoffs were consistently inside the 5 yard line or the end-zone. We'll see how he does in the NFL, but I'll take my chances with him over Suishy.

Posted by: tedunni1 | December 11, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

The switching out of Gano for Suisham is a wash.

Your team has gained as much as it has lost, which is precisely nothing.

Unless you name is Adam Vinetari, you will miss a clutch field goal every now and again.

and no coach or player ever truly wants to rely on any field goal kicker to win game for them.

What I am saying -- and a few have caught on -- is that you load up for a draft that has the potential to be uniquely rich. You don't go the other way, and lighten up on picks ... which is what our mgmt did.

The 2010 draft has the potential to be a game changer because it will be incredibly deep if the CBA is allowed to expire and lots of juniors come out.

philly with 12 picks ... wow. If what I'm hearing is correct, they could all be the equivalent of 5th round or better talent in a normal year.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 11, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

One more on his kickoffs. In his semi-final game in the UFL, he had 6 kickoffs which were touchbacks, another that was 1 yard into the end-zone that was returned, and another that went to the 10 yard line. He definitely has a strong leg.

He also is a very strong punter (he punted in the UFL). In college he was the MVP of last years Champs sports bowl between FSU and Wisconsin despite not attempting any field goals (6 extra pts). The reason for the MVP? - he averaged 48 yards on 5 punts, 3 inside the 5 yard line and 2 inside the 1.

i dont think that swapping Gano for Suisham is a wash.. we have traded a kicker who is statistically one of the worst inthe NFL, and who has a history of costing the team at least 3 games due to misses (Seattle, Dallas, NO) over the years, for a young guy with the potential to be a solid kicker for years. plus, he can punt, if needed, and has a strong leg for kickoffs-- something that suisham was not particularly good at.

at this point in the schedule, what is the risk ? if suisham wasnt going to come back next year, why not audition his replacement this year ? if nothing else, it might prevent us from wasting a draft pick on a kicker. at the worst, Gano isnt brought back next year. it is a "no lose" move.

I didn't root for Suishy to be short on his KO's, have no range, have his KO's go out of bounds, or have his FG's be a part of the reason we lost 2 out of the last 3 games. He is a low salary and very replaceable, unlike others.

I certainly am not crying about Suisham and I am not opposed to giving a new kicker a try when there is no longer a shot at the playoffs but I would like to point one thing out. I keep reading how Susiham lost the Dallas and NO games. I just want to point out that all his misses during these games occured when the Redskins had the lead. Therefore he did not lose the game. He certainly did not help to win them but he did not lose them.

Our worst fears look to be true.

1. Vinny is returning: The decision to bring in Sherm Lewis, while it hasn’t produced wins, has improved the offense. The 2008 draft class has started to show real promise and the 2009 class with regards to Orkapo, Jarmon, & potentially Barnes looks decent. I believe that replacing Vinny was only an option in our minds and never crossed Danny’s mind. These two cannot exist without each other .

2. The Skins are targeting a QB with their top pick.: JC is not their guy, based off the 2009 offseason and Danny’s desire to have the next big thing at QB. I’d like to think that this isn’t true but every indication is that they are looking in that direction.

3. The OL will continue to be neglected: This has been the MO of the FO in the last 10 years reinforced by only drafting 1 OL in the first 2 rounds of the draft in that time. I believe they are foolishly convinced that Samuels and Thomas will be back and that Levi and BMW will be starters next year.

4. The one player away theory: This FO has approached every offseason and has yet to develop a game plan to develop a roster that will be competitive from one year to the next.

5. The Culture will not change: Impossible when the Owner continues to make the same mistakes every year and expect different results while he and Vinny remain the only constant.

I pray that I am wrong on all accounts. HTTR!

We still talking about a kicker? A kicker?

I still remember the days when Chip Lohmiller led the league in scoring, so the above is said in jest.

SS is no CL. Based on his production last year, he should never have been kicking for the Skins this year. Yes, the Skins were ahead when he missed the kicks he missed, however, cutting him is not a big deal. I find it hard to believe that Gano will produce less than SS did last year and if he makes the clutch kicks then how are we going to miss him.

Now that the team is 3-9 is the time to audition a new kicker if the team does not plan on bringing back SS instead of during camp. Much better to see what Gano has in real games then in preseason.

Wish that the team would look at E Williams at center while we are assessing players for next season.

Posted by: noonefromtampa | December 11, 2009 11:36 PM |

A lot depends on the future - capped vs uncapped, draft position, new coach, possible trades, free agency, etc. Like Portis - if there is no cap he is prob gone, if cap he prob stays. If the Skins can get Okung or Suh then Camp prob stays but if not and they pick Claws then Camp might be gone.

Posted by: MrPink | December 11, 2009 11:54 PM | Report abuse

The reason I ask Tampa is because of the cut list only the following would I cut before camp and Thomas based on if there is a cap or not.

Betts, Ladell RB
Collins, Todd QB
Thomas, Randy G
Wynn, Renaldo DE

Anyone else would depend on what FAs are signed and who is drafted to comply with the # allowed into camp. Everyone else on you list I would have to keep until then.

Yes Vinny should go

Two different analysts on NFL Network basically said you should address O-line and D-line with your top picks. Good value on QBs, RBs, and WRs can be found in rounds 3-5

So the handy dandy draft guide in something like this depending on need of course

1. LT
2. DE sackmeister
3. DT run stuffer
4. RT/G
5. Shut down CB
6. Play maker LB or S
7. Game changer at other positions QB, WR, RB, KR

Then it just a matter of having decents scouts to evaluate players. I think the Redskins have that but Vinny/Danny think they know better.

It's not rocket science, but does require planning and forethought

I can read mock drafts all night and into tomorrow but we currently don't have a 3rd rounder.

So the handy dandy draft guide in something like this depending on need of course

1. LT
2. DE sackmeister
3. DT run stuffer
4. RT/G
5. Shut down CB
6. Play maker LB or S
7. Game changer at other positions QB, WR, RB, KR

Posted by: noonefromtampa | December 12, 2009 12:01 AM |

2. DE sackmeister ??? Don't we already have two pretty good DE sackmeisters in Carter and Rakpo?

The list must be the dude's preferences, not actual round by round suggested picks. Ain't no way nobody's gonna pick up a shutdown CB in the 5th round. It would be hard to do in the 1st round.

There is few more you can post if you'd like. They're funny but nothing most of us haven't seen.

You're act is growing tiresome, I'm waiting for something more than what you called Curzon out for being...

HTTR!

I'm hoping you are wrong too, but I'm afraid you're not. Especially on the Vinny part. Heck, the only reason Orakpo is here and Cutler isn't is because the Bears were bigger fools than Dan and Vinny -- if Josh McDaniel in Denver had preferred JC over Orton, the Skins would have been hosed for years.

There is nothing insightful or original that you have brought to this blog. All that you have demonstrated is that trolls post in both english and german.

Nothing you have posted football related has been bright, funny or enlightening. So your daddy worked for the state department. So you live in germany. So what?

All you have proven is that you are a troll like several that visit this blog from time to time. And since you have been posting since early this morning, you must be one of the unemployed germans without a life.

Whateves dude.

As a few have stated already, your act is tiresome and you provide nothing to this blog. The American public school graduates on this blog don't care for you.

As far as me never leaving my "neighborhood" I'm sure I've lived in more countries in my adult life than you. Yes, a few have been European countries and Germany wasn't one of them. Judging by your obnoxious behavior, it doesn't seem like I missed much.

I hope you don't plan on running away and hiding if your goal is to discuss the Redskins, but if you continue with your nonsense then do so in German.

What Does Mr Cerrato have on you? You owe him some money? Does he have secrets on you?

I am not here to blast you, you've own the team for 10 years and did the same things in regards to the Redskins like Ground Hog Day.

Please FIRE Mr Cerrato and bring in a real football person to run football operations. It's time you understand what you've tried and still trying is not working.

It's time to pack it in and try something new.

FIRE MR CERRATO!!!!!!

Sally Jenkins has a good column today on the BCS. Her claim is that it's a conspiracy, illegal under anti-trust laws. Over the last five years, the six conferences that make up the BCS got 88.8 percent of the BCS bowl revenue, while the other five leagues got only 11.2 percent.

And which conference has had the best bowl record over that time? Mountain West, 14-7. For that, the Mountain west got $18 million in bowl revenue, compared to the mud-sucking ACC which was given $72 million. Etc.

The solution? Holder's Justice Department should bring charges under the anti-trust laws. No new laws are needed.

Haven't learned much in your world travels have you? How about closer to home? Check out THE THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF which is a NORWEGIAN folktale. I'm surprised you don't know what a troll is, GERMANY having attempted to annex NORWAY in the first half of the 20th century. And I'm certain you are familiar with the GERMAN expression "AUSLANDERS ROUSE." Such a warm, friendly people.

Sorry LS.

You lost me after "Sally Jenkins had a good column today".

But if you are talking about the BCS being an illegal monopoly, then Sally is a bit late.

Some politician/lawyer in Utah already started raising this issue (last year?) when the undeafeted Utes were shut out of the championship game.

What? No talk of a rookie salary cap last spring? Was that the last spring when the guy negotiating for the union was talking about limiting the money for rookies so as to have more available for vets? Or was it the spring of 2007?

The talk of a rookie salary cap has been around for at least a year. It's only recently that the owners have considered it a negotiating point for other concessions. But not being aware of the possibility is pure BS. Or pure incompetence.
