Hello From Lambeau

This is Green Bay people. Stil a little warm by their standards - about 40 degrees - but overcast with the sun just peaking out over one corner of the stadium. Smoke stacks in the out in the distance and a sea of green and yellow flooding out over the streets.

Tried to get a steak at Brett Favre's restaurant when I got in last night, but there was like a 3 hour wait, and get this, the ALCS was not on any of the 15 TVs in there - it was all Nascar, college football and at least 4 Tvs had some local Packer highlight show on, you know, lilke the cheesy (excuse the pun) stuff that comes on during the weekend at like 12:30 at night.

And no one was considering switching any of the TVs to the baseball game.

There must have been 50 people milling around outside the place waiting for tables, and they all had some form of Pack clothing attached to them. There is seriously nothing going on around here other than the team, at least that's what everyone told me. By 6 am people were tailgating outside my Motel 6 (more on that later), chanting, "Go Pack Go, Go Pack Go." Pretty intense. Really cool game-day atmosphere. I appreciated the enthusiasm.

There was a group of maybe 25 people protesting the Redskins name around the stadium with signs like ("Racist Names Institutionalize Racism"), which I had not seen since the Kansas City game back in 2005.

The stadium itself is stripped down and old-school, with very modern updates to the exterior and infrastructre (fancy elevators, etc). Still amazing that you look at the East end of the stadium and see just 5 retired numbers for this franchise. Tough group to crack, eh?

Anyway, had a good, low-key night here and knew as soon as Francona somehow, mind-numblingly, went to Gagne in the 11th that the game was over and the series was tied. I'm sitting here screaming for Tavarez or Lester or friggin Calvin Shiraldi - anybody but this bum with the posuer Grizzly Adams beard wearing No. 83. But no, he went to the stiff. (had to make the folks at FOX happy, 'cuz they knew they had a series from the moment Gagne took the mound).

Overall, Motel 6 did the trick. I'll spend one night staying pretty much anywhere, and compared to some of the ma-and-pa roach motels I slept in during the World Cup in Germany, this was 5 stars. Even got a wake-up call from that Tom Bodette (probably spelled that wrong but you know who I'm talking about) dude this morning (okay, it was recorded and everyone got the same messgae, but still).

However, in the future I now know that this is a BYOI, BYOS and BYOC establishment - no iron, no shampoo and no alarm clock.

Great post, thanks Jasno! I went to a Bears/Packers MNF game at Lambeau a couple of years ago. The people of Green Bay are very hospitable and friendly, and that stadium just makes your hair stand on end. It's definitely a Gridiron Church. Even the food is great! Soak it all in!

Whoa whoa whoa there is another game today? I assumed this was the last game of the season, The Super Bowl, Pats vs. Cowgirls I was unaware that there were other games on. You mean its only a regular season game? I have been misled.

Completely off topic but I just saw a replay of the Carlos Rogers interception and did anyone else see when he got the touchdown, just put the ball on the ground and ran back to the sidelines? I just think that is great from someone who had been treated the way he was the past couple years

500 TCCL's for pulling Calvin Shiraldi out of your a$$! Only the true blue will know that one.
Great to hear about Motel 6! It's kind of nice to know big shots(LOL) from the Post have to suck it up in a 1-star every now and then.
Great pre-game post for the junkies, thanks JFL!

just checkin in late on this thread. GO TRIBE! Is it wrong for me to be a fan of two of the most mascot-hated pro sports teams? I come to it naturally and I'm all about tribal sovereignty, and I try, but its out of my hands.

I wonder if Woodward and Bernstein had to stay at Motel 6s.

So Earnhardt Jr and Kenseth are at the game. I guess Dale won't be BHGO today.

Come on. You IRON? Aren't you print media? Who's gonna see whether your shirt is ironed?

Posted by: Sharon | October 14, 2007 1:36 PM | Report abuse

I live about six blocks from that Motel 6 (if it's the one I'm thinking of). You couldn't do better? At least a Super 8?

Seriously, I've respected the Post ever since I was working the sports copy desk for the G.B. News-Chronicle, the Redskins were in town, and a reporter called me to ask for a good postgame restaurant. When I suggested one, he asked if it was any good.

"I took my mother there on Mother's Day," I assured him.

"How do I know how much you love your mother?" he replied.

It is questioning like this that has made the Post great.
