Heyer to Start; Practice Squad Set (Updated)

Stephon Heyer will start Thursday against the New York Giants in the regular-season opener at Giants Stadium. Heyer just spoke with Jason La Canfora and confirmed that he will start ahead of Jon Jansen on the offensive line.

Heyer said he learned from his experience starting last season and feels he is ready. "It's the same concepts, just a different day," Heyer said. He said the coaches did not inform him whether the move is permanent because Jansen is dealing with a sprained foot. "I don't know really, I'm just going to take it as they want me to start this Thursday and I'll go from there," Heyer said.

Quarterback Jason Campbell acknowledged that the demotion of longtime starting right tackle Jon Jansen "is a difficult situation because of how long he's been in there and what he's meant to this offense," Jason Reid reports, but the Redskins have to move forward with their best group.

Heyer is in his second year out of Maryland. "We know [what Heyer] can do," Campbell said. "He played a lot last year and he's definitely someone we can count on. As a quarterback, I get a lot of credit if things go right, but it all starts upfront. Stephon knows how to play this game and knows what he has to do. And whether he's in there, Jansen or anyone else, we've got to get behind the guys on the field and play as a group. That's the only way it can work. That's the only way we can win."

Demetric Evans said he has not been given any indication yet whether he will start in place of injured end Jason Taylor. Practice begins around 1, so I'll see who is with the starters and go from there
...
The practice squad officially is:
Byron Westbrook
Horace Gant
Andrew Crummey
Matteral Richardson
Tyler Ecker
Curtis Gatewood
Devin Clark
Nehemiah Broughton.

Forst still sucks. With no Strahan off the left he should be alright.Heck, he handled Strahan last year.

Is this because of Jansen's foot?

There is a God.

No, it's because Jansen is washed up.

From previous thread...

I'm sure Blache & Co. know they have to make some adjustments, especially with the recent injuries they've experienced. I wouldn't be surprised to see Springs/Moore/Hamilton at FS at different points of the game to spell Landry and to also allow Landry/Doughty/Horton to cause "havoc in the house" at SS. Only problem with having Springs at FS should the Skins go to a dime package, Tryon The Liability, could be on the field and get exposed... We'll see though... this is why they play games.

Probably a combination of the two.

Where is Mason?

Posted by: Mason? | August 31, 2008 12:41 PM | Report abuse

Not a huge surprise... could this be the beginning of the end of Jansen's tenure with the Skins???

Ugh on the practice squad... no Mix, no Mann, but Gant, Nemo & Ecker????? What gives?! Wonder where they ended up.

Not sure I agree with bring Westbrook back again. Think it's a good move to have Heyer to start. I am sure that upsets JLC since he called Heyer out last year. Of course we won't read anything about that from JLC.

I think they keep putting Nemo on the squad just to have a backup to Sellers in case anything happens to him.

Let's call this like it is. JLC wants to spin every redskins move as something negative. Corkczar you can say whatever you want but that Frost article was nothing but negative. Should not have been written. Had nor journalistic value. Dude was a PUNTER! Everyone knew he was going to get cut once they drafted another punter. D. Smith had to have some say so on drafting Brooks. JLC is a bitter reporter. Period. No matter how YOU want to spin it.

"Bitter reporter"? Hie thyself to the Department of Redundancy Department. Of course he's a bitter reporter. 99% of the best reporters are bitter. (99% of the bad ones, too.)
But that doesn't change the fact that a slew of "anons" like yourself come on here specifically ripping JLC and the Post. (Regular posters, too. "Cut" coverage has been lame.)

Corkczar, this was me. Forgot to enter my name when I posted until a few minutes later on that thread. Just setting the record straight that I am not some lurker from redskins.com

This took less than 24 hrs. What about clearing the 24hr waiver period. Now there is a story that needs investigated.

I keep getting blocked.

Last thing on the Punters it is funny how the stories this morning leave out the most important stat for a punter Net Average were Brooks was two yards better then Frost. I like how Wise and Reid leave that out to try and get there point across. Most punters could just kick line drive punts and up there overall average. They would out kick ther coverage and have tons of punts returned for big yargade. Frost had to make a tone of Touchdown saving tackles maybe it was because sure he could kick a 65 yard punt and the coverage would be 30 yards behind so the kick returner has all kinds of time to set up his return. Lets say this one more time FROST SUCKS.

I would pick up Delta Oneal I think he could help incoverage move Springs to safty if you want to.

Tyler Ecker?????????

Ok now. Release the hounds. If ever there was a conspiracy about Vinny wanting to redeem draft picks, there is ultimate proof.

Why no presser from Zorny today?

Zorn will talk later, after practice (which just began). Oh, and hit refresh to read more on Heyer.
Oh, and....good afternoon.

God forbid JLC write a positive piece about the 'skins uncovering Heyer when it was Gaither who garnered all the press when he got taken in the supplemental draft by his beloved Ravens last year. That would just be too postive for him to handle! Better to write a piece on some crybaby punter!!!!

Posted by: Andy from Baltimore | August 31, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Glad to see Heyer won the job. I loved Jansen over the years but age and injuries have taken a toll on him. We have an aging line so it is good to see a young player (undrafted none the less) win the job. Hopefully he will be the building block for some young blood in the o-line.

Re: MSN ear wax article link

-ear wax's beneficial qualities are already well-documented. Too many individuals think that cleaning out ears with a cotton swab is acceptable. You can puncture your ear drum quite easily. That, and pouring carbon peroxide into one's ear, is A VERY BAD idea.
