Hines Ward: Jack Tatum Masquerading as a WR

Teams in the AFC North know all about Steelers WR Hines Ward, and how physical he can be when the ball is not in his hands. He blocks like a demon and regularly delivers punishing hits. Some would argue that those hits are occasionally dirty, or at least borderline, but the Skins, for the most part, said the dude plays tough but clean football.

They also know that they'd better keep their heads on a swivel, though, because you will get hurt when Ward is blocking (especially if you are away from the ball). Wide receiver Antwaan Randle El, who played with Ward in Pittsburgh, says his former teammate gets a bad rep (Ward has been fined this season for some of his hits on defenseless opponents away from the play).

"The defensive guys feel like they are the guys who are supposed to do the hitting," Randle El said. "They feel like they're supposed to do all the de-cleating. So when it's a receiver doing it, they're like, 'What's going on?' There was one time I think he crossed the line when I was there. We were playing Cincinnati and one of their safeties kept taking shots at him. So Hines, the next five plays, he went after him, no matter what the play was. That was just showing him that he could get back at him and do the same thing."

Linebacker London Fletcher on Ward: "He plays within the rules, but obviously you want to keep your head on a swivel, so to speak."

Linebacker Marcus Washington on Ward: "Normally, defenses do the hitting, and he's a guy that if he gets a chance to hit you, he will. But I don't worry about it. It's part of the game. I'm not a guy who cries or complains if someone does a cheap shot on me because, to me, that's part of football. If you don't want to be hit, play golf, play tennis. But in football, you're going to get hit."

Defensive coordinator Greg Blache referred to Ward as "a warrior" several times and said he has no problems with how he plays the game. "You have to be aware when he's out there," Blache said. "Guys get upset when he embarrasses them."

Sensationalism. Anyone who's played football has gotten ear holed on a crack back or a play involving a turn over. It's called football.

Why do the skins not complain, because Portis, El and Cooley and Moss also love to knock the snot out of guys. El and CP were keeping pancake stats for one another last season to see who would get more.

The NFL has been way off base with the fines on Ward, the guy is just a beast, I just hope he doesn't get any good shots on our guys.

Ron Jaworkski was on Mike & Mike this morning and was asked about the Skins/Steelers game. Ron said that the Skins have not been good at getting to the QB so Ben R. will probably not be a human pinata this weekend.

BUT, Ron also said that his mid-season NFL MVP is Jason Campbell.

I do understand fins on hitting guys ouside the field of play, spearing and unsportsmenlike late hits, but 99% of the hits he is making are probably fair.

Have to agree with the pass rush thing, Lisa... seems to me that our D has been doing just fine without generating many sacks. It's obviously something we'd all like to see more of, but there's more than one way to skin a cat... like containing the run and having solid cover guys taking care of business behind a four-man front that just has to hold the line...

I know Blache is trying to light a fire under his guys with the "can't sack groceries" thing, but he knows his dudes are taking care of business for the most part...

I think Blache throws the sink at Ben, this Monday. I think he knows that the best way to neutralize the Steelers is with Ben on the ground.

Can JLC pump up the Steelers any more than he has this week? Hell reading his post yoiu would think they are the best team in the NFL.

I expect part of the reason Blache was so unhappy with the defense last week was the way they handled(or didn't handle) Orlovsky on his boots and rollouts. That will be a critical part of containing Big Ben this week too, so it's probably good for the Skins to have that show up last week, making it an easy point for Blache to make this week.

As someone said, anybody that played football knows about these crackbacks. I was a receiver who only played one year, but the first day of practice everybody was telling me "This is the play you get a good shot on the DB", it's part of the game and nothing better than laying a defensive player on his back, although I never came close to what my boy Hines does!

Hines is the motherbumping man, any real football fan or player can appreciate how he plays! I'm still laughing at the weak Ravens all mad cause Hines lays them out everytime they play.

Hines, please don't hurt any of our safeties or corners and let's have a good game after our DAWGS WIN SATURDAY WOOF WOOF WOOF

Most NFL prognoticators have the Skins and Steelers ranked between 3-6 some have the Steelers over us some have us over them. This game is all about figureing out just how good this team is.

but

if our D line could improve by like 50%, you might literally be looking at the best defense in the league BY FAR. I'm talking about a D that we could ride to the Superbowl. That's a big step. I do agree that we've been fine without it, and sacks are definitely an overrated stat when you take into account pressures and all that, but it can't be overlooked.

jm, they're the best team we've played in a while... arguably the best team we've faced since week one. This is a hell of a matchup.

I don't think "pumping up" the Steelers is quite the same as teasing out some of the things JLaC has been writing about.

Will the Skins treat this game the way they treated the Cowboys and Eagles games? Or will they come out flat, muddle around for a while, like they did the past few weeks against "lesser" opponents?

Mel Kiper on Mike and Mike this morning suggested the NFL MVP to this point is Jason Campbell. Said everyone knew what the Redskins had in Portis, but Campbell has been the big surprise and is now one of the league's elite.

I did not get a chance to post on earlier threads, but after reading the article this morning about players being tired after 5 preseason and 8 regular season games, I need to vent.

One word: puhlease!

How many of these players actually played more than 1/4 of each preseason game?

8 games in a row? Oh no! What about prior to bye weeks when they had to play 16 games in a row.

I sm sorry to be so hard, but suck it up for a game and make it to your vacation week.

I am stepping down from my soap box now.

NateinthePDX no one is saying that are not a good team. But hell we are no push over either. We heard from him how great Cowboys O is and we don't have a pash rush. We heard JLC talk about how great Cards WR are and we don't have a pass rush. And two or three other teams. After being proven wrong over and over I would just think JLC would back off pushing the other team so much. But then again I do love coming back and talking about how wrong JLC is after a win.

Both things can be true, jm!

JLC can provide his analysis in advance of each game -- whatever "bias" he brings to the table -- and we are free to agree or disagree. And afterwards we sift through the results.

I like the "negativity" because it fosters my own anxiety about each game... in this league, as a fan you have to keep your head on a swivel lest you get blindsided by, say, a loss at home to the previously winless Rams.

And having prepped with as much info as possible, especially the ominous stuff about what our opponents do well, the particular matchups that look problematic, makes victory that much sweeter!

I read somewhere early in the year, maybe uniwatch, that the skins would be wearing the burgundy at the final 4 home games this year. Don't have a link to article...

NOTE TO SKINS FANS:

Tell every Skins fan you know going to the game to bring burgundy towels or shirts so when the Steelers fans that are there wave the terrible towels, the Skins fans can wave the burgundy ones and it will be all burgundy and gold. That idea should be passed out everywhere.
