Hold on to Your (Maroon and Black) Hats

I think "breezy" may be an understatement in this morning's updated forecast by the Capital Weather Gang. There's a wind advisory until 8 p.m., so drive carefully.

In Skins news, you have to figure London Fletcher, despite his ills, plays tonight. Les Carpenter wrote today about what exactly is driving Fletcher.

We'll be back with inactives and other pregame stuff a little later.

Everytime I watch the Giants I wonder "Why did we let Antonio Pierce go?" Does anyone up here have an idea? Usually beantowngreg has some insights into the Antonio Pierce kerfuffle.

Can't laff about that, Talent.

Ya know, the economy is in the dumper and all that, but there's an ad in the NYTimes for a show that I confess I would pay to see: Will Ferrell, live, in "You're Welcome, America. A Final Night with George W. Bush."

Manning made the mistake of hitting Hixon in the hands.

Posted by: ifthethunderdontgetya | December 7, 2008 1:43 PM

At least the announcers had the good grace not to say the inevitable "Hixon would like to have that one back again." Probably saving it for a more obvious situation -- field goal that bounces off the upright, interception, or a shot in the leg with a 40 calibre Glock.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 7, 2008 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Hixon can make the tough catch behind him but not the easy one.

As much as I like Fletcher, letting Pierce go was a stupid decision than can squarely be blamed on the ego of Gregg Williams.

Posted by: JasonLaTempleton | December 7, 2008 1:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm not optimistic at all about tonight. Our offense has done NOTHING in the past weeks, I don't expect anything to change, especially against the Ravens' defense. If we couldn't move the ball or score in the Giants or Cowboys games, we won't do anything against the Ravens' D, especially when it's at night, at their place. Here's to hoping for a miracle!! I really wish I were more optimistic, but I was really optimistic about the Cowboys game, and we all know what happened then. If Skins come out firing and win this game, I will eat all my words. Let's hope so. :)

Cindy,

I think Bush's opposition is having a hard time accepting that they defeated him and they're in charge now. Bush is history, but people are still coming to my door trying to collect money with an opening line "George Bush has _______ (insert cause here)."

I'm sure the Will Farrell thing will be a movie, and that we have many more to look forward to.

One other thing: I want the NYG to have something to fight for when they also play DAL.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 7, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

No vs. ATL

NO goes up at the half with a drive for4 a FG. Two QB's that are having really good games. Watching their good offenses shows how putrid our really is.

Posted by: lsskinsfan | December 7, 2008 2:32 PM | Report abuse

I think that the Giants will have something to fight for, no matter what, when they play Dallas. They want to go 6-0 in the division, which they will if they beat the Eagles and Dallas. I cannot imagine they would just rollover, even if they have homefield and a first round bye (which they get if they win today I believe).

Posted by: suzannepdc | December 7, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

The bright side is that NO has retaken the lead at the end of the half in ATL.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 7, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

wow the eagles are going to loose now

Posted by: BMACattack | December 7, 2008 2:34 PM | Report abuse

Suzanne--The NYG might not roll over, but they would let their starters rest. They would let their best players sit on the bench. That would give CAR or DAL the shot to win.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 7, 2008 2:36 PM | Report abuse

If NYG wins today they get the NFC East and a first round bye. They don't get homefield advantage quite yet.

Posted by: jiacinto | December 7, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Watching their good offenses shows how putrid our really is.

Posted by: lsskinsfan | December 7, 2008 2:32 PM

One-dimensional, maybe, but not putrid. We're still 13th in the league so there are 19 worse offenses, about six or ten of which are zero-dimensional and, truly, putrid.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 7, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

PHL gets the ball to start the next half. Their first drive will probably be very key.

Not looking good for me vs Forrest. He's got Roddy White for 150 yards and its still in the 3rd. Brees is being Brees. westbrook is having a strong day. He has the jints defense/teams. 2 blocked FGs and 1 returned for 6. Big FF numbers there. Even Dominic Rhodes has scored for him.

So far,LenDale has a TD for me. Peyton (who I don't have) has thrown 3 TDs, but managed to overlook my guy, Reggie Wayne, each time. With a big lead, I'm thinking the Colts run it out pretty soon. Which means more Rhodes and not much Wayne. Even my TE fumbled, so that's a few lost points.

Kinda the sum of all my pregame concerns coming to fruition. Huge points for Forrest's key guys, modest underperformance from my guys.

I think we let him go after his brother, the long snapper, made the bad snap in a playoff game in Tampa. We missed the FG and lost the game.

Dan Turk was so hurt he couldn't take the plane back with the team. The 'Skins cut him. Later, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer and was dead before the next football season.

'Skins weren't thrilled with Matt, and cut relations with the family. He's been an adequate kicker who's had a good career, and probably better than we've had since, but he's not exceptional.

Yep, Matt took it pretty hard as you can imagine..... I don't recall a game that let the wind from my sails as much as that game and it wasn't just b/c of that bad snap.

I remember Dunn dropping the ball on a toss left sweep, the Skins D pursue him and the ball bounces directly back up to him, and our pursuit killed us and he walked into the EndZone about 15 yds or so.. that was a 3rd down play and they would've settled for a FG..... That game still hurts...

I am so amused by Ravens fans. This may (ok, will) sound arrogant but who did these people root for before 1996? How can you like a team that was spawned out of greed and betrayal? If they say the Colts, who did they root for from '83-'96?

7-5 means our offense outscored the other team's offense in seven games. That's what offenses try to do -- score more than the other team's offense. We've succeeded more often than not. We're not great, but we're far from "putrid."

In terms of scoring as an offense, yes we are putrid. We couldn't even get 1 TD on 2 short fields in the 1st quarter of that Pittsburgh game and constantly settle for FG's in the red zone. Not to mention all the 3 and outs hanging the defense out to dry.

So far so good today.

1. NYG lost. This is good because they haven't clinched home field advantage. Should DAL win they will clinch the NFC East. However, they will still have a lot to play for when they have to pay DAL and CAR.

2. ATL lost. They have games remaining against TB, MIN, ans STL. MIN and TB will be tough games for them. ATL now has five losses.

3. CAR and TB will meet tomorrow night. They both have three losses. I don't care who wins per se because the loser will have four losses. CAR still has to play DEN, NYG, and NO. Two of those three are going to be very tough.

4. TB has CAR, ATL, SD, and OAK left. What is good for WAS is that I would state that ATL will lose to TB. TB should beat SD, mainly because Norv Turner has the worst luck. OAK should be an easily.

5. DAL has PIT, NYG, and PHL left. DAL must lose to PIT in the next game. NYG still has not sewn up home field advantage yet, so they will have something to play for next week.

Overall WAS could still get one of the wildcards. But it is incumbent that they defeat BAL tonight.

Hey talent, is that what a 7-5 record means? That 7 times our offensive outscored the other teams offense? Thanks for clearing that up for me. Oh by the way, isn't it special teams' and defenses' job to try to put points on the board too? It is what it is and I don't see anyone here giving our offense credit for our average(but still winning) record. GO STEELERS!!!

Posted by: vegasskinsfan | December 7, 2008 4:14 PM | Report abuse

good points jiacinto. I hadn't thought about the fact that Giants loss is probably better for the fact that they need to still clinch the division/homefield against Dallas next week. Philly is really no threat if we take care of business.

Tonight however is not QUITE a must win. It is close. But if we lose tonight and win the last three, I'd say it's 50-50 that we get in

Yes, a Giants loss was good for the Redskins for 2 reasons: (1) because it puts the onus on the Giants to keep winning, especially against Dallas next week, and (2) it puts the onus on Philadelphia to keep winning, who also have Dallas on their schedule.

Regardless of Philly's victory, the skins would likely have had to win out anyway. That win changed nothing except to provide a wake-up call for NYG and provide Philly with hope.

LMG - Totally agree with you re: the Ravens. To me, they are a pretend football team (even when they won the SB). Have no respect for fans that were devestated when the Colts snuck out of town, but had no qualms about stealing their team from another city that fought to keep them. But I don't hate them, I just don't really think twice about them b/c to me, they are not really a football team.

I want to make one change. I think that a CAR loss is slightly better than a TB loss because they have tougher games coming against DEN and NYG.

What I want (so far) is for DAL to lose this game against PIT, but win against the NYG. That is counterintuitive, but that makes the CAR game more meaningful to the NYG. They will still have to fight for the homefield advantage.
