Hunter the Punter Is Redskins' Top Scorer

A fake field goal-turned-touchdown in the final minute of the half not only salvaged some respect for the Redskins but also sent them into the locker room with a tiny bit of momentum at their back, despite a 17-7 deficit.

Bet you never thought punter Hunter Smith would be the team's leading scorer at half, right?

Smith's 8-yard touchdown run with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter was among the few first-half bright spots for the Redskins, who were manhandled in all facets of the game early on.

The Giants' must've been happy with their halftime numbers: 5-of-8 on third-down conversions, 213 yards of offense while the defense allowed only 145. Quarterback Eli Manning finished the half 12-of-16 for 138 yards and a touchdown. For the sake of comparison, Jason Campbell was 8-of-11 for 113 yards with an interception and a fumble.

The Giants had a scoring opportunity early -- the first play of second quarter, in fact -- as Manning & Co. trotted onto field to face a fourth-and-1 from the 3-yard line. Brandon Jacobs ran into a wall, though, and Washington took over possession. On the play, Albert Haynesworth was slow to rise. Trainers trotted onto the field to offer assistance. Haynesworth was able to walk off on his own accord, though. He did, however, sit out a noticeable number of plays in the first half, apparently gassed. At one point, he returned to the sidelines and threw his helmet to the ground.

After taking over on downs, the Redskins failed to move the ball, and on the ensuing punt, the Giants started their next scoring drive on the Redskins' 44-yard line. Six plays into the drive - on 3rd-and-7 from the 30-yard line - Eli Manning hit Mario Manningham with a routine pass near the first-down marker. Washington cornerback Fred Smoot missed the tackle. Then Andre Carter missed Manningham. And then DeAngelo Hall had a chance to shove him out of bounds and whiffed. It goes in the books as a 30-yard touchdown.

To that point, the Giants held a sizeable clock advantage - 15:27 to the Redskins' 4:23 -- and Washington had totaled just 36 yards of offense.

On the Redskins' next drive, Campbell completed a couple of pass before throwing the third to Giants' cornerback Corey Webster. The Redskins' quarerback never could find his rhythm. With fewer than three minutes remaining the half, Campbell was stripped in the backfield on a pass play - credited as a sack and forced fumble for Osi Umenyiora. Umenyiora recovered the ball and ran in a 37-yard score, giving the Giants a 17-0 lead.

With the game slipping away, the Redskins mounted one final drive of the half, marching inside the New York 10-yard line. Facing a bull-rush from all directions, Campbell's third-down pass incomplete, and kicker Shaun Suisham ran on the field to attempt a 25-yard field goal. Instead, Smith took the snap and sprinted to his right, untouched on his way into the end zone.

Just a reminder that Paul Tenorio will be doing a quick, 30-minute chat from Hoffaland as soon as the game ends.

New thread!

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | September 13, 2009 5:53 PM | Report abuse

I'm guessing a theme in the locker room was "JC step up in the pocket"

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 13, 2009 5:53 PM | Report abuse

Going to be drafting a running back next year I think....

Posted by: abtassler | September 13, 2009 5:54 PM | Report abuse

At least the defense has gotten to rest for a little bit on this drive. If WAS can get a few first downs and let them rest, even if they don't score on this drive, that will at least give them time to recharge.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 5:55 PM | Report abuse

JC needs to learn to read the D before the snap, and how to use the pocket. He waits to long to move up into the pocket, which contributed to the ball being stripped.

I'd like to see J.C. take over this game.

if they score 7 here, its over....

Posted by: zjfr2 | September 13, 2009 5:57 PM | Report abuse

So now the defense comes out again. Looks like it will be 24-7 or 20-7 soon. With PHL and DAL winning it's going to be a long week between games.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Here it is

A. Is Kelly lost in this game?
B. JC doesnt know how to scan the field for him?
C. JC doesnt have enough time to find him?

Posted by: cocodc1 | September 13, 2009 5:59 PM | Report abuse

Those screens are punishing.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 5:59 PM | Report abuse

So we've established that Hall cannot tackle. Good to know.

STOP WITH THE CUSHION. They need to jam these inexperience WRs.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:00 PM | Report abuse

Joe Buck is.....terrible.

Posted by: RomoLongballs | September 13, 2009 6:00 PM | Report abuse

DHall has no interest in tackling anyone.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | September 13, 2009 6:00 PM | Report abuse

They are KILING our CORNERS on the RUN AND PASS...cut smoot and dhall

Posted by: cocodc1 | September 13, 2009 6:00 PM | Report abuse

Aikman, Buck, and Oliver always seem to get Redskin games.

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 13, 2009 6:02 PM | Report abuse

There are bright spots, if we could just get frigging going on offense.

Deangelo Hall is killing us.

Posted by: whughes1 | September 13, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

There goes Hall again. This guy has been nothing short of TERRIBLE today. Maybe at some point this season he'll look like a productive player and not like the loser who was released by the Raiders.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

DHall again.. looks like the Raiders were a good judge of talent after all...

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | September 13, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

Embarrassing, or expected?
Haynesworth? Injured or worth 100 million?
1st half pathetic
2nd half better get a move on!!!!

Posted by: kidvid | September 13, 2009 6:03 PM | Report abuse

Awesome...Dhall ruins a chance at passable field position with yet another inexcusably stupid penalty.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 13, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

We need to seriously invest in some HOGS. Good offense = HOGS

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | September 13, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

I swear D Hall and Landry must have the IQ of a well baked potato. And with all that supposed speed, why the heck is D Hall consistently playing 10yds off the WR

Posted by: ga8085 | September 13, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

i repeat, how much are we paying hall. gives up 11 yds on a flat pass...block in the back...

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | September 13, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

"I'd like to see J.C. take over this game."

yeah, there has to be a first time for everything, right?

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

I'm back to this mess, the rox bot of 6th was worse than the first half here, give up 3 runs and the lead. . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | September 13, 2009 6:05 PM | Report abuse

Previous post- I'm complaining about Portis because he SHOULD'VE gotten the first down but fell two yards short. Jacobs would've ran around the corner to get the first down. And we were at midfield.

It's plays like those that prevent us from winning. Now we have to drive again and the clock is ticking...

Today's game is not about the OL. They are doing a good job.

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 13, 2009 6:05 PM | Report abuse

DeAngelo Hall is proving to be the prototypical Danny/Vinny bonus baby. We take an average player, make him a multi-millionaire with guaranteed bonus money, then watch him take the rest of his career off. This team would be much better off today with him on the sideline or watching the game on TV.

BTW...how many times with JZ run the slant off tackle for 1-2 yards today?

Posted by: tconway | September 13, 2009 6:05 PM | Report abuse

just a got tweet from my peep at the stadium.. He saw Snyder scalping tickets and kicking grannys in the parking lot..

Why did they just run the ball again?

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

OK it is really time for Zorn to go. Worst damn play calling ever!!!

Posted by: jm220 | September 13, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

OL is doing well in pass protection. They're not opening many running lanes, though.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

here comes the redskins patented run, run, incomplete, and punt offensive scheme.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

OK - my wish list for next season

1. A starting capable QB - ditch SOup
2. A new starting RB - Portis is garbage...
3. Entirely new WR corps..

and finally....

A new head coach- Shanahan, Cowher, anybody with any offensive vision!

Posted by: mohammed10 | September 13, 2009 6:06 PM | Report abuse

smash mouth time... good move by Zorn here. It'll be 3rd and manageable now.

Posted by: elfreako | September 13, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

run on first, run on second, incomplete on third.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

What is Zorn's problem? I mean how many times are you going to run the ball on 1st and immediately go to 2 and 10? Change it up for crying out loud!

Posted by: ga8085 | September 13, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Not seeing it from Portis and Campbell is taking too long to throw. Can't win a game without an offense. Love what the D is doing though. They are in the fight.

Posted by: Eumctom | September 13, 2009 6:07 PM | Report abuse

Aikman & Co. are Fox's A-Team, so in theory, it's a good thing they do so many of our games, it means that we are the national game, i.e. the most interesting game that week.

No, portis is slowing down when he gets to the LOS. He needs to hit the line like Mason does.

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 13, 2009 6:08 PM | Report abuse

I can agree that he should hit the hole harder, but there really hasn't been one there today. All those off tackle runs have closed up before he's gotten to the line. There really aren't many seams to work with today.

When Portis has gotten through, he has looked slow. His cuts are not quick today.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

We need to go down the field.. we need yards in chunks. if we keep playing this conservative it's going to take forever to score...

Tried many times over the past 15 years, with unimpressive results.

Let's try continuity for awhile.

Posted by: Alan4 | September 13, 2009 6:13 PM | Report abuse

The problem is the owner- the Danny has to go. Of course, if the 'Skins have unrestricted free agency, he might buy the best of the best. Maybe the Danny is waiting til next year when he can go with an unlimited free checkbook. Of course, given his track record, he'll overpay for a bunch of past-their-prime losers.

wow was that an ugly looking run play.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Stupid running plays. Only to the left, how about ONE to the R.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 13, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

play calling is painful.

run right
run right
pass

run right
run right.

Posted by: whughes1 | September 13, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

So if JZ has so little confidence in JC that he'll just ruin drives with CP into the line calls, why not bring in Todd Collins?

Posted by: farstriker | September 13, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

nice playcalling. we are so predictable. ;)

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

How many damn times is Zorn going to call the same play on first and second down?

Posted by: jm220 | September 13, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

You know you can blame JC is much is you want to, and some of it is warranted, but Zorn is not helping. He keeps calling plays that leaves JC in third down passing situations. Its getting ridiculous..

Posted by: ga8085 | September 13, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Why do they keep running the same plays over and over again expecting different results?

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

nice time-consuming drive, would be great if we weren't down by 10. . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | September 13, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

When you run the ball to ONLY one side of the field, then it makes it easier for the defense to stop it, I think. If the preseason game calling is vanilla, then what's this we're seeing today? Is there a term other than vanilla to describe how bland this offense is? I would love to see a vanilla offense from the Skins.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

Classic 2 yards and a cloud of dust leaving us with a 3rd down passing situation where JC will have a 50/50 chance of completing the pass. We have no explosiveness/potential for big plays.

Posted by: juansongarcia | September 13, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

I want a new RB. I want a power back, like Jacobs... I don't like Portis

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:16 PM | Report abuse

and once again its run, run and third and long. must be nice calling the defensive plays when you know in advance whats coming based on the down.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:16 PM | Report abuse

The giants are thin at corners and any other team would exploit that but not the skins, they are determined to keep getting 2 yards up the middle.....WTF

WHAT???

Posted by: Curzon417 | September 13, 2009 6:17 PM | Report abuse

LOLLL!!! Are you freakin' kidding me? wow!!!! jim zorn is STUPID!!! Fire him!!

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:17 PM | Report abuse

lol this playcalling is just ridiculous.

it should eb the other way around...pass pass pass pass run. no reason for us to run the ball. we always do this crap, and before u know it there's 8 minutes in the 4th quarter left and we're STILL down by 2 possessions. can we please throw the damn ball and score some damn points? with the exception of one play (JC didnt step up), our pass-pro has been better than expected. lets' freakin throw the damn ball downfield. what's the worst that can happen? A LOSS?!?!!?!? as if we didnt expect that already. DAMNIT.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:21 PM | Report abuse

Campbell is a lost soul.

Posted by: mofares | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Another TO because we can't figure out what we're doing.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Honestly! How long does it take to call a play and then relay that to the offense. If this is going to be an issue, then run no huddle.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

another time out, guess we've got to carefully set up the next run for -3 yards.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

JC just burned another TD, Jc has done absolutely nothing well today...

Posted by: zjfr2 | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

What the hell up with getting the play in on time? Damn this team is driving me damn crazy.

Posted by: jm220 | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

17-14 or 17-10 would at least make it respectable.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

JC is showing why he will be gone next year he is scared and can't control the offense.

Posted by: Flounder21 | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

this is a huge play- a td is needed

Posted by: Eumctom | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Doughty has been in the last couple series...wonder if Horton is hurt

Posted by: tonyc | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

Another Timeout.

Win or lose, I'm off the JC bandwagon.

I've seen tree stumps that have greater intellectual capacity than that man.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | September 13, 2009 6:22 PM | Report abuse

there is absolutely no excuse for the Skins to run the ball one more time this game. PASS PASS PASS PASS THE FKING BALL DAMNIT!

Posted by: kman2 | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

JC sucks! Put in Collins.

Posted by: mofares | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

for the love of god....can we hire shanahan right now?

Posted by: dealer1 | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

CAMPBELL IS SO DUMB. GET THE BALL OUT FASTER YOU MORON!!!!!

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

WASTE OF A TURNOVER

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we have to settle for the FG now.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Wow. Good thing they called that TO. What a fantastic TD they just scored.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

JC's pocket presence is just embarrassing. Give me break, you've got to do something to make a play.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

Doughty has been in the last couple of series...wonder if Horton is hurt

Posted by: tonyc | September 13, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

whoever said our D was wearing out their O was spot on. . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | September 13, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Hard for him to get rid of the ball when no one gets open.

But the offense is having the same problems it did last year. They die in the red zone, especially close to the goal line.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

I officially declare that I have lost faith in Campbell. He just does not have confidence in himself.

Posted by: Eumctom | September 13, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

what the heck do they practice? do they have any plays that work?

Posted by: peterandmeredith | September 13, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Aikman knows that JC sucks, he is being a nice guy.....

Posted by: mofares | September 13, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

LUCKED OUT, JASON JUST FUMBLED ON THAT PLAY. GOOD THING THEY DIDNT REVIEW.

Posted by: kman2 | September 13, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

This game is not over. We need a stop here and then a bomb to Moss.

Posted by: juansongarcia | September 13, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

3 quarters and still no offensive touchdowns...confirms what we learned last year...JZ's play calling sucks and JC's ability to read defenses sucks (I love his AUDIBLE on a 3rd and 8 to a freakin RUN!)

Posted by: JokerMD22 | September 13, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

i wonder what the over under is on the redksins offense scoring a touchdown? 3 games? 4?

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

pump fake inside the 20?
JC cannot read fast enough in the Red Zone.
Your LB and DB are compressed together so you have to increase your progressions and release speed.... Not pump fake.

Posted by: SkinsneedaGM | September 13, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

AH!!! He tackled Jacobs by the head, LOL

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 13, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

No - he didn't, his arm was down. AH finally earns some $$.

Posted by: JesusFreakKaren | September 13, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: pennstate1 | September 13, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

JC stinks

Posted by: 1965skinsfan | September 13, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

well one bright spot today, haynesworth has been making plays when the giants actually try to test him. he has been beating hiis man consistently.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

I've seen enough of JC and my decision is- he CANNOT get it done. He just cannot make plays. This is the same crap as last year. We're that close and we settle for a freaking FG. WHY CAN'T WE SCORE TOUCHDOWNS????????????? SO FRUSTRATING. WE GET A INT AND SETTLE FOR FG. I'M SO MAD.

where is orakpo?

Posted by: dealer1 | September 13, 2009 6:26 PM | Report abuse

My 8 year-old son just expressed his opinion about our QB! The players have to execute the plays called. It is not JZ's fault they don't do that.

We have played like TOTAL ASS and are still in this game.

IF!!! things were switched, I would not be happy being only up 7 after having DOMINATED the opponent.

Redskins need to keep competing.

Posted by: SkinsfaninKaneohe | September 13, 2009 6:29 PM | Report abuse

This franchise is down in the dumps like the O's with Angelos. Until Danny boy sells the team, we are not going anywhere and I doubt that will happen as he just made $600 million in ten years. Not bad compared to the S&P. Stop puting $$ in Dannyboys pockets, we can support the 'Skins from home.

Posted by: mofares | September 13, 2009 6:29 PM | Report abuse

this game is identical to the opener last season. giants dominate and take a 17-0 lead (16-0 last year), a trick play TD at end of 2nd qtr to give us hope. (thomas reverse last yr, Fake FG TD this year), and a stalemate in second half. we need to make some damn progress.

landry should be benched!!! another missed tackle!

Posted by: dealer1 | September 13, 2009 6:29 PM | Report abuse

Giants close again...

I REALLY THINK WE HAVE THE WORST OFFENSE IN THE ENTIRE NFL. Yes, even worse than the Detriot Lions. Watching our offense is so painful.

Posted by: rachel216 | September 13, 2009 6:32 PM | Report abuse

It's interesting. The defense gets a TO, and the offense wastes it. And now, when the defense needs to make a play, they let the Giants start driving down the field.

Posted by: CDon | September 13, 2009 6:32 PM | Report abuse

mofares...

Snyder saw what we are seeing now...JC can't play and we crticized when he tried to get a new QB.

"2010, 2010, 2010.." .. Snyder has stockpiled his Offensive dollars for an uncapped 2010.. No extensions, no long term signings... No traded Draft picks.. (all intact..no cap on Draft picks either)..

Redskins Park next March will have cash flowing like Dubai Saudi Arabia.. There will be a dedicated runway at Dulles just to handle the volume of Redskins Free Agent prospects visiting the richest franchise in the NFL....

The D is doing well considering that they have no help. If this is going to be a game, the O needs to do it now (and not a stinking fg- a td)

Posted by: Eumctom | September 13, 2009 6:38 PM | Report abuse

down by 10, just a fake punt and an interception return from victory, if our offense can keep from scoring for the giants again.

Posted by: james808d | September 13, 2009 6:38 PM | Report abuse

down by 10 with 11 mins left.....it's over....for most teams it's not but for the skins who score 3 pts a game....it's over

Everybody is defending the D saying they are doing well. Last I checked we invested a ton of money in the D and we cant stop an offense that has no wide receivers and THE most overrated QB in the NFL

Posted by: vze2bnyf | September 13, 2009 6:45 PM | Report abuse

I'll tell you what's pathetic: I'm in New York, so I watched Mark Sanchez have a nice first outing as a Jet. Who knows how he'll do the rest of the season, but he's already outperformed JC today.

pathetic

Posted by: HPYTRKR1 | September 13, 2009 6:46 PM | Report abuse

What's JC looking at game film for? He can't scan the field to look for open receivers! The only time he can complete a pass is when Cooley or Randel El run across the field in front of him...(Same as last year, and the year before that, and before that...)

Posted by: JokerMD22 | September 13, 2009 6:46 PM | Report abuse

the giants want to burn time so they are throwing? and doing it well. Amazing.

Mark Sanchez would look pretty good in Burgundy and Gold right now, that is if Jay Cutler was unavailable...

Posted by: JokerMD22 | September 13, 2009 6:54 PM | Report abuse

3 Lousy points from this pathetic offense....the first overall pick next year may belong to the skins and Shanahan will probably select a QB

Posted by: pennstate1 | September 13, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

NOW THEY WANT TO THROW THE FU%%%%%% BALL

Posted by: pennstate1 | September 13, 2009 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Well I hope that the 49ers win. Hopefully they will do something this year.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 7:01 PM | Report abuse

At least they made it respectable. They won't get the onside kick. Too little, too late.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

Good thing the Skins conserved their timeouts and did not burn them in order to call silly running plays in the third quarter.

Posted by: HeShootsHeScores | September 13, 2009 7:05 PM | Report abuse

I do have to give them credit for making it look like it was closer than it was. That fumble sack that led to the TD in the 2nd quarter is now the difference in this game. Also that INT that led only to an FG looms large. Finally burning two timeouts earlier was also fatal. Whatever the case they at least made it respectable.

Still, though, this team has issues. They shouldn't have had to rely on an onside kick to win this game.

The bottom line is that the team is mediocre. This game was one that they should have played better in.

Posted by: jiacinto | September 13, 2009 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Plays that cost the team the game:

1. The sack that led to the fumble touchdouwn.
2. Burning the timeouts early in the 3rd quarter.
3. Campbell throwing that other INT in the 2nd quarter instead of just running out of bounds.
3. Failing to take advantage of the DeAngelo Hall INT to get a touchdown.
4. The Santana Moss botched play early in the 1st quarter after the Portis run.
5. Repeating the same plays over and over again hoping for the same result.

So, again, as I analyze the loss, the Redskins lost the game because of stupid mistakes. They could very well have won this game but their offense failed to do anything.

The Giants dominated all aspects of the game. Their only fault is that they somehow allowed the Redskins to stay in the game. On their end a 23-17 win, while a win is still a win, should have been 30-10 win. But that doesn't matter because they still won.

The play of the game: The Campbell sack that resulted in that NYG touchdown.
