I've Fallen, And I Can't Get Up

I am now officially the lamest blogger ever (in case you didn't already know). I am an old, old man who can no longer hang; the guy who heads back home to change clothes and passes out way too early in his jeans with ESPN blaring on the television, then wakes up at 7 am wondering how the hell he slept with all of the lights on and the volume on like 50.

Yep. That's me.

Had an early dinner with Howard and Ryan O from the Times, started throwing back the drinks, and came up weak. Never met up with Scott and the others who were down here volunteering, but will find them at their seats once they get the Superdome. Those guys were not downtown when we arrived Saturday afternoon. By the time they got down here we were on opposite sides of Bourbon Street. Howard and I ran into a few people and had a few drinks while Scott and those guys were moving to another bar.

I was a little, eh, tipsy and could not find the place they told me to meet them. I was also working up a sweat walking around and figured, okay, go back to the hotel, take a quick shower, get a second wind, but on a short sleeve shirt, have the concierge draw a little map to the bar where those guys were. Seemed like a great plan. Never got to the shower part, much less the map.

Turned on the tube ... Next thing I know it's 7:11.

I am in big-time negative TCCL territory here.

Dealer emailed me a great idea, though, about telling the FOX crew where the guys are sitting and seeing if they'll pan to them in the crowd. So once they call me with their seat location, I'll do that. Look forward to seeing them. They were on the local news down here, were part of a story on the front of the sports section down here and have been given all the luv they deserve. From talking to Scott on the phone yesterday, I know they had an amazing, and highly emotionally-demanding experience.

Again, what these guys did is pretty special. They deserve all the props in the world for coming up with the idea and executing it. They are an inspiration.

The signs of destruction are still all over the place here, just on drive in from the airport. It is a heartbreaking situation. Taking the bridges into the city it was impossible not to think of the people running and fighting for their lives right on those roads a few months ago. It's sickening that was allowed to happen.

Some of the locals we chatted with all said the same thing - there is still so much that needs to be done. Some wonder about the ability of this city to support the Saints long-term, given the population decrease and the lack of business ventures. One guy figures even if the Saints win the Super Bowl, they're in LA in 4 years. I told him Buffalo might beat Benson the punch, and he suggesting Mexico City, which makes a lot of sense. Once Buffalo move - and what a blow that would be to that city and its diehard dans - Toronto will get an expansion team. Only a matter of time before there is a team in Canada and Mexico, I figure.

In a half hour there is a president with the Lt. Gov. Will be intersting to see what's said there.

Randoms: Jansen is out, so big Todd Wade will have to answer the bell. The dude has a lot of starts in the league, but this will be the first time really testing that knee, which he shredded a year ago. I am sure that will play on his mind a bit. He'll have a massive height and weight advantage on Charles Grant, but I wonder if he can handle the speed stuff to the outside.

Inactives - Espy, Boschetti, Rumph, Jansen, Patten, Kozlowski, Montgomery.
Saints without Joe Horn and former Skin Omar Stoutmire.
We'll see. I'll post the inactives when I get them.

Kudos to the blog gang down there. You guys rock. Our short attention spans in this country keep us from focusing on anything for longer than a month. When Andersen Cooper and all the little satellite trucks wanderd off soon after Katrina hit, the responsibility for that part of the region fell upon all of us. There are so many horrendous stories out of that tragedy, beginning with the incompetence of all of our elected officials from the top-down, to people losing everything and being forced to move to new cities, to pets having to be abandoned during the evacuation, and so on. Every little bit helps, and for those of us who can't afford the time to go down there and emulate our blog buddies' great and noble work, it's our responsibility to give in other ways. They are our people and our extended families, and that is our country and our extended back yard.

On a lighter subject...Jason, practice makes perfect. You'll just have to drink your guts out more often. (slight confession: I spent the weekend entirely sober, not even a drop to drink since Thursday night...have to give the old liver a rest every now and then, you know)

The game is being broadcast locally here in Seattle. Sadly, I still have no teevee, but I'll be in a bar, hopefully with WiFi, to join in on the weekly tradition. And maybe partake of a Bloody Mary or two...

P Diddy,

How does one live without a TV? And why do you not have one?

Posted by: Lisa | December 17, 2006 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Well, I didn't get to Jason in time. I was going to give him a story about how he couldn't meet the gang because he was out rescuing stray animals or something, but he 'fessed up. This blog is like "Oprah," you cannot lie to it.
So he's officially the TCCP -- Tom Cruise Couch Potato.
Meanwhile, check out Jeff Garcia's cap on the Fox pregame show.

If West Ham can beat Man Utd, your boys can beat the Saints. Come on you Skinnys! Gotta go bet the Saints and the over...

If you saw Thursday night's game, you saw that we got a pretty bad wind and rain storm in Seattle. Now, people in this town are soft. Really soft. All these yuppies were complaining about being cold and without power for 3 days. Never mind that folks in other parts of the country typically deal with a lot worse during their respective stormy months. But, whatever. My reply to all of them: shut up and deal with it.

In my case, the satellite dish I have installed on the roof of my condo blew away. DirecTV won't be able to come out until this coming Thursday to fix it. In the meantime, I am in a bar to watch the game (I haven't missed a game since I was 13 and even though the season is lost, I feel like this is my cross to bear).

Meawhile, at home I've resorted to living like the Amish. So far this weekend (no joke), I've churned butter, baked cookies, and entertained myself with finger puppets.

P: where have u been dud?

all:

just caught the begining of NFL matchup. Obviously they talked about the saints - no surprise here.

Jaws analyzed a play where the saints line up with 2 receivers to one side of the formation and a TE to the opposite side. In this case dallas blitzed both OLBs and Brees dumps to Bush in the flat to the TE side of the formation. Tackle comes out on the play and throws a key block and bush goes like 40 yards for a TD.

Will keep an eye out to see if they try that play and how we react . . .

sniffling my guts out but still rooting . . .

BTW, go up to Ain't It Cool News for an awesome series of interviews with Sly Stallone. If you don't come away from that series with greater respect for Sly, I don't think there's any hope for you.

Say what you want about the guy, and there's no doubt he has become a caricature of himself over the years. But if you recall, the first two "Rocky" movies were stellar, and expertly written. Stallone is a talented writer who, sadly, is cursed with a horrible voice that makes him come across as a meathead. I have extremely high hopes for "Rocky Balboa" and from everything I hear, it's pretty good.

Sorry, I checked out for a bit. Checking out McNair's injury....just a cut, X-rays negative, he'll be back. Editing a little TO story and debating with co-workers how big a deal it is that he may be sacrificing future movement in his ring finger to continue playing now. We've decided that, while all five digits are important to wide receivers, the ring finger is definitely the least important.
Blaw.

I think I saw apn to some skins fans at the stadium, was it them?

BTW, our linebacking trio must be the worst in the league. Holdman Awful, Marshall= undersized, lost, abused, looks like he's the pinball in there, never hits anyone hard.

Washington is okay, but never makes those wow plays anymore and never really hits anyone hard like Reaper.

I note the hard hits from Griff and Carter, Andre Carter may be winning em over....he sure can stuff a reverse and other slow developing type plays.

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 17, 2006 2:01 PM | Report abuse

One of the downsides of being in the lowest tier of NFL teams is that you get the worst announcers for the games. It feels like the 5th week in a row I have had to listen to Brian Baldinger ramble on.

At least it is not Bill Maas I think that moron did everon one of our games a few years ago. Apparently Fox put him out to pasture for the benefit of TV viewers everywhere.

Nice tackle attempt by Warrick Holdman on the Saints touchdown. Can't figure out why Rocky isn't given a chance - what more could he do wrong?

The Blackjack is a great little phone. I prefer the T-Mobile Dash, though. Cingular (for whatever reason) keeps disabling WiFi. I have the Cingular 3125 right now and love it. Thinking about getting the generic, unlocked version of the Dash off eBay just to have as a second phone for email and stuff.

I'm a little biased, though, as a Microsoft employee :-)

Quick breakdown on Jason Campbell's throwing day.

7.3 yards per attempt
15.7 yards per completion
1 touchdown
0 interceptions
204 yards

His completion percentage is down, but he's getting us 15.7 yards a completion??

Compared to Brunell, defenses have to contend with Campbell stretching the field on them, and that is what is opening up the run for good old Ladell Betts, who averaged 5.4 yards a carry - beast.

Yes, I was away for a bit. Sadly, I was nudged with the knowledge that the IT department at work had decided that employee internet antics had gone on far enough, and they're watching what comes in and out. Meh.

Well, I managed to stomach a game, for the first time this season. Sat myself in front of the TV, and watched my guts out.

Quick points:

The Souper - He's just getting better as we go. It still makes me beat my head into the wall thinking of how long we kept with the BenchedMark Experiment, seeing how quickly Campbell is picking things up. So much for rumors about The Souper having a tragic case of The Stupids, eh?

The Defense - !!! ... ??? ... !!! Where in the heck was this defense earlier in the season? We had pressure that kept at Brees all day, we clamped down on the running game, Bush got locked up in non-performance heck, Colston had a severe case of Unidodecaphobia.... ?!? ...

The Jackal - Finally, you make a pick. It's about time. Now that you got this jinx out of the way, you'll catch every one hereafter. Right? Right? Right! No, not you, Two-Wrongs - back to your hole.

2. Golston. A STEAL!!!! Love this guy.

3. Chris Cooley - I love this kid. From the way he approaches life and the game. A baller through and through.

(2) You live in the DC area - only root for the Cowboys because you hate the Skins
(3) The Cowboys do not want you on their blog....

That's all I'm going to say to you because children that throw tantrums should simply be ignored.

Watching Campbell's post-game presser on redskins.com. Here's a rich, single young dude who should be swimming with ladies. And yet he wears a t-shirt to the podium? I liked his suit look much better. Hopefully, he'll get back to sartorial splendor.

Gotta say, regardless of how he dresses, he really comports himself quite well. He seems to be the kind of player you actually want to root for.

Skinsfan,

I hope Doughty does stay with the team - he has a real inspirational story. His baby was born early and in distress and will probably have to have surgery in the near future. I know, I know..that is no reason to root for a guy but I am a woman and therefore compassionate.

Just heard something shocking...Cris Collinsworth said that our defense today was "terrific" and that Andre Carter was a "fierce physical athlete" (or words to that effect. I am so glad that Carter is now playing well.....he's a good guy and really took the heat here. Again, I'm a woman and sympathetic to his plight throughout the season.

i missed SS during postgame. diddy, i'm with you on double G. but dale lindsey HAS to go. sorry but i think you can make a point without berrating a person. and ryan clark stood up for lavar last year. maybe that's the reason they let him go.

and why did it take them soooooooooo long to force #22 to creep up to the line????????????? and #99 to try inside moves??????????

al saunders' play calling is still not upto NFC east level. norv was never this bad. ever! he may've made a mistake on one series but not multiple series at a time and not in multiple games/heck the whole season.

cuz i rember when skins got norv...it made my skin crawl. yuck!

and btw, i'm rooting for the eagles. the only team in the nfc that can beat the cowboys in my (not so) humble opinion.

Well, like I said last night, I root for the team, the symbol, the history. I am not any happier about some of our personnel/coaching decisions than you guys are. Actually one of the reasons I hang out here is that Cowboys fans are so negative on our blog. I can't take it. If I want to see a team trashed, might as well be the Redskins. I hate Cowboys fans writing crap about our team. But the consensus is Parcells sucks, never get to the promised land with him. Roy Williams sucks, Jerry Jones is a freak, etc. Why would I want to read that?

nfc is just HURRIBLE this year. your D sucks. gave up 42+ points last week at home in a statement game, and then gave up 4 straight TD's to the falcons. but with all that they can still make it to SB unless there's another injury to the iggles. iggles is the only team that can stop them. and wouldn't it be nice to see jeff garcia in SB and having to defeat "to" to get there.

so my sb pick (because i think they HAVE to have a team from the nfc): eagles vs. pats(?). eagles win the SB. everyone's saying to themselves...WHA????????????!!!
but rember mcnaab lost that sb against the patsies single handedly.

i'm only picking the patsies cuz i hate the colts, and marty. my brain wants me to pick the chargers in the SB but my heart says screw it...if i only get half of it right :)

re: the saints win over the girls...
i too was surprised to see the onside kick...and i didn't think it was that great of a decision either. saints had that game. their offense was unstoppable. they didn't need that play. i guess you could chalk that one up to inexperience headcoaching by sean payton.

don't get me wrong...as a cowboy/tuna hater i LOVED it. i LOVED the pouring on. but for a team that'll probly see the girls in the postseason i thought it was pretty stupid thing to do. they had that game won without that play.

>>> "And I loved Ramsey...he got such a raw deal here"

I'm sorry, but Ramsey got a shot with not one, but two coaching staffs. Granted, one of those staffs was not very talented (Spurrier's) and the other was full of Super Bowl rings (St. Joe's). Regardless, he had his shot to lay claim to the starting lineup and hardly distinguished himself in any outing.

Okay, fine, maybe DC wasn't his cup of tea. So he goes to NYC, gets a shot with a rookie coach and behind a QB coming off major shoulder surgery and still can't crack the lineup.

Sure, Patrick's a really nice guy. The kind of dude you want your daughter to marry. But from where I sit, it's a proven fact that he can't play in the NFL.

As I sat watching the Skins, I hated myself for thinking that we were going to lose despite playing a terrific game.

Up to the last Saints play, I really thought we were going to lose. The Saints were too good, our lead just wasn't enough, thanks to all those drives when we didn't score touchdowns.

This lack of faith must be a self-defense mechanism because my heart has been broken so consistently by this team all season. But it kept me from appreciating how fantastic it was to dominate the very good Saints in their building, when they had so much to play for and we did not.

Yes, we had imperfect play calling AGAIN, and Soupy still showed growing pains, but thanks to the stout defense, run game, special teams (who have been bringing it all year), and an extra-large holiday serving of SwissHam, WE DID IT. We beat the hot-as-a-pistol Saints.

I'm just going to enjoy this win at face value. It feels terrific, doesn't it? Not going to play woulda-coulda-shoulda about those nine losses on the ledger. This week we beat one of the best teams in the league on their field, beat them soundly, and that qualifies as an early Christmas present and a bona fide surprise. Loving it.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS.

[PDX note 1: Like P Diddy, we never lost power at our place in North Portland, though tons of people around here are still in the dark. Unlike Diddy, we have no satellite dish to get trashed. In fact, we don't have a teevee in the house (which may astonish and amaze). I've been making a sports bar pilgrimage each week.]

[PDX note 2: I should have done some more research and found a sports bar with WiFi so I could keep up with the blog. Good project for the offseason. Just to be there for the 18,000 post milestone, that would have been special.]

[PDX note 3: for a while during the second half one of the teevees broke in with live footage of an Army helicopter over Mt. Hood, lowering people to the mountain as part of the search for three missing climbers. (Later it was announced that one of the climbers' bodies was recovered.) It was surreal to watch this amid the bright shiny NFL action on the dozens of other screens. Heading home after the game I saw Mt. Hood in the distance, setting aside my postgame elation momentarily.]

Excellent photos in the WaPo game slideshow. The last two are funny as all get-out:

* Rogers making his interception (!!!), with ARE leaping into midair and Santana looking utterly dumbfounded on the bench behind. (My reaction in the moment was a combination of both, shock turned to sheer joy.)

* Mighty mite Betts getting a postgame hug from Big Joe Salave'a. The bottom of Joe's jersey numbers are higher than the tops of Ladell's! You gotta love it, the hardworking RB and the hardworking DT reveling in a good win.

J-La, I actually have a football sort of thing to drop here (gasp). My biggest question is WTF has gotten into Andre Carter? The man has become a beast. (Seriously, it's like instant beast, just add December.) Is it the case that something in the scheme has changed to cut him loose, or that he's on some kind of a personal vendetta?

I'm not going to take a cheap shot and single him out as an underachieving FA since this was a stinky-poo D most of the year. He has fascinated me all year as a guy with so much ability and potential, and I am sincerely curious what has been different the past few weeks.

If you happen to see AC at the Park and you don't mind passing along a note, please give him my personal congratulations on his best game yet as a Redskin, and let him know I hope for many, many more.

Offensive Players of the Week
...
Mark Brunell, QB, Washington. What? But, you say, he didn't even play in the Redskins' upset of the Saints. Correct. "He did an incredible job for us last week, and he deserves some credit for this win," assistant head coach/defense Gregg Williams said. "Even though he's left-handed, he played Drew Brees perfectly on our scout team all week, giving the defense a great look. He went to the spots on the field Brees would go to, and threw to the spots Brees would throw to.

and

Coach of the Week
Gregg Williams, assistant head coach/defense, Washington. Williams orchestrated a great defensive game plan to shock the Saints. His plan: never let Brees get comfortable, make sure Reggie Bush doesn't have any lanes to motor forward in the screen game, and beat the crap out of the Saints' receivers. Washington 16, New Orleans 10. Mission accomplished.

and

You know what I liked about the Redskins in the win at New Orleans? Everything.

From the mouth of Peter King in his MMQB column. Can you believe it?

I think our bloggers who went to NOLA this week brought us some good luck, eh? Congrats to the Skins for finally playing the way they should have played all year, and props to the blog team for trekking to NOLA. Good on ya'll.

1. San Diego (12-2). The Chargers are a wonderful team, the class of the NFL with two games to play, and I'd say this is the best team Marty Schottenheimer has had this late in any of his 21 seasons as a head coach. And you know what he told me the other day when I asked him about being sixth on the all-time victory list (203 wins in 21 years), just six behind Chuck Noll (209 wins in 23 years)? "I still think my best coaching job was in Washington [2001], going 8-8,'' he said. Me, too. Imagine if Dan Snyder had stuck with Schottenheimer instead of getting seduced by Steve Spurrier.

The red zone playcalling remains an issue but I'm gonna enjoy this one.

While we're staying positive, John Heim listed a few things to be happy with going into the offseason in last weeks Warpath:

-Betts
-new found purpose of O-line...apparently got pissed that folks were calling them underachievers
-according to Heim, Gibbs has learned his lesson from having a lax training camp
-consistentcy w/ Williams & Saunders staying on

this brings up the question as to which assistants will depart- J-La, you've alluded to some guys leaving...any idea as to who might bail in the offseason? Definitely fell a few steps behind with a new secondary coach in this year...

>>> "this brings up the question as to which assistants will depart"

St. Joe is intensely loyal to his coaches and players, we all know that. I think you'll see the usual 1-2 assistants get promotions in the NFL or college and depart. I think you might see 1-2 retire gracefully. I don't think you'll see any of them dismissed outright. St. Joe would only do that if there was a serious character issue at play. I don't expect much of an overhaul, personally.

Someone mentioned Dale Lindsey. Before we string him up, ask the remaining linebackers what they think of him. As much as we all love LaVar for his eloquence and jocularity with the media and fans, don't forget that he was something of a prima donna. Does Marcus Washington bristle at Lindsey's style? How about a young guy like McIntosh? Do his players still believe in him? That's the question to ask, not how Lindsey is portrayed in the media or what LaVar thought.

My opinions...as usual, with no inside knowledge.

to the DC-based bloggers:

call me crazy - or someting else for that matter - but I am actually thinking of taking the whole fam to see the skins-jints game on the 30th. Will be in town for the holidays and wanted to take advantage of an opportunity to take my kids to see the skins (as I am fighting an uphill battle with the broncos).

So here's the Q #1 for those who know the layout of fedex field: where would you want to sit on a cold night in december if you were taking two kids - 5 and 7 and your wife to see their only game of the year?

WOW!!!!!!!!!! What in the world? They beat the Saints. Everyone join in with me as we sing a new song. OH WHEN THE SKINS GO MARCHING IN....OH WHEN THE SKINS GO MARCHING IN. HAAAA. What a great job by the team today.

My only issue is at 5-9 with the season over Gibbs needs to stop taking field goals. GO FOR IT...WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE????? No more complaining. Great victory by the guys today. Hope this can lead to a win streak heading into the end of the season. That defense came up big this year. Call me crazy but I'm going to remember this game as a starting point for this team ending this year and heading into next. They went out there and just shutdown an offense that has been putting up astronomical numbers.

Boofer, or Redskins Suck or no name whatever childish crap you come up with...you better hope the Cowboys win the Super Bowl. If they don't you're going to have it coming. Because if the Boys don't win it..they will have accomplished just as much as the Skins did...no Super Bowl. Sorry you're little "but we made the playoffs and you didn't" cop out won't work. So you better win or you'll be the biggest clown of them all. Such a putz.

ALL BOARD THE LADELL BETTS EXPRESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He keeps on running. Wade superb job in place of Jansen. You didn't know Jansen was out. Solid game all around. On to St. Louis.

Now you idiot what do you notice about the records. Let see Joe Gibbs has a better win percentage in less time. More playoff wins and more super bowls. I'll say it again, until the oil in can Tuna wins another superbowl or better yet win anything before quitting so until then go sit in the corner and shut the hell up. On the bobbled snaps I wondered if Rabach was trying to use his club to snap the ball, just to mix it up a little bit, you know, have some fun with it. But they kept it together. We can laugh about just about anything that happened in this game because we won it, by golly.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 18, 2006 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Not only is he hard to listen to, Baldy is hard to look at. There is something extra creepy about him. I think it's eyeliner.

Maybe his wife made him tell the makeup folks to accentuate his eyes (or pinned a note to his jacket when he left the house), and he sat down in the chair and they put eyeliner on him as a joke, and he looked at it and thought, "huh, I guess this is what she meant, my eyes look awesome!"

Whatever, seeing his potato face and those weird pig eyes looming out of the screen is unsettling.

How 'bout when Kenny Albert, who himself looks and speaks like he's boaderline mentally disabled, called him out for saying the saints challenged a play just to give the d a rest.

Baldinger: "you see, Peyton challenged that play to give his d a rest. He knew he would lose the challenge, but his guys were winded. Smart move."

Albert: "why didn't he just call a timeout?"

Baldinger: (inaudible grunts and snorts...)

Posted by: PSF | December 18, 2006 1:46 PM | Report abuse

Oh yeah Nate... hit the nail on the head with the eyeliner! LOL

And could he have flogged the bit about Payton's challenge toward the end of 1st half any more? It was a pretty slick move, but come on, so much more going on in the game at that point to talk about. I had to mute and switch over to the off-air broadcast (vs. Satellite) so I could hear Sonny, Sam and Larry... After the diatrabe about Payton's challenge I couldn't take it anymore. You know it's bad when one sacrifices picture quality and DVR rewind. :)

PSF, ICU, I just shot some latte out of my nose reading your posts. Good stuff.

I noticed that we have the dubious honor of being the ONLY team in the league at 5-9. I don't care about the draft position, I'm glad to be playing well enough that we've won two of our last three. And we momentarily separated ourselves from those losers in Arizona, Houston and Cleveland. 4-10, ha!

Another dome win this week -- and after pounding the Saints I am definitely thinking win on Xmas Eve -- and we'll be feeling awfully good going into the finale vs. the Jints.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 18, 2006 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Nate, thanks for the kudos, but I gotta call you on 1 thing...we've won 2 of the last 4.

Saints and Carolina, with the falcons and iggles' L's in between.

I feel ya on the next two though...

Posted by: PSF | December 18, 2006 2:02 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure how dubious it is (5-9) actually. Kind of a harsh reality and tells a lot about the state of the organization. We don't suck from top to bottom like those 4-10 and worse, but certainly not ready for prime-time either. Although, I must say, with some gutsier calls from a coach who has a habit of using "insert-verb-here your guts out" in his pressers, we could be in the thick of the playoff hunt. Sad, but true.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 18, 2006 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Righto, 2-2 in our last four.

I meant that it's a dubious honor to be the only team with a 5-9 record, kind of a little space all our own in the league standings. Not that we deserve a worse or better record, just that it's funny to be the only team with that record with so many teams at 4-10 (3) and 6-8 (6).

Trying not to cut into the good feeling this morning with too much of the woulda-coulda-shoulda thoughts for this largely wasted season. But doggone it, watching Minnesota get crushed on their field yesterday was awfully tough. Doesn't it seem like the opener against them was about eight months ago? Dammit, we gave that one away. Losing at home to winless Tennessee, that one was extra brutal. Losing at Tampa Bay, with Badkowski under center, double ugh on that one. And the Atlanta and Philly losses the past two weeks. How different the season could have been, how exciting it would be to be jockeying for playoff position right now. Oh well.

Wait, I'm still reveling in our WIN. I am. Heartily enjoying it. Despite the preceding paragraphs.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 18, 2006 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Of course our defense just shoved it on the best O in the whole league. I predicted that. I have no idea about anything anymore.

I made the following statement before the game started: 'if we hold them under 30 points, I will drink a whole gallon of milk'. Note: human beings cannot do this. It is not an urban legend. I am not allowed near the 'Glover Dog Park' for 6 months...

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 18, 2006 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Wow, did we actually win? Totally amazing. Where was this team in the beginning of the year? Anyways, kudos to the following people:

Andre Carter: Yay, you finally showed up! Who here knows how many sacks you would have had had the refs seen fit to actually call holding on the offense. Seriously, what does it take these days to get called for holding? The man was practically gang-raped from behind; someone who obviously took their title as "offensive tackle" a bit too seriously.

Rocky: You got in the game again, congratulations! Anyone know how many plays he had? Don't worry about getting shutout with the no tackles thing, AC does that all the time and he still starts.

JC: Great passing and poise, a few more reps on those short throws and maybe you can get your completion percentage above half. Then again, having an alert Brandon Lloyd actually looking for the ball might help, some.

Saunders: Called a great game again--until the third quarter when we all of a sudden stopped running the ball and began throwing. What the hell is up with that? I think we need to officially designate these lapses as "Al Saunders" moments. Much like a "senior" moment: you know, the type your grandfather-in-law has when sitting in his wheel chair watching the Price Is Right, forgets he needs to go to the bathroom, and messes himself so bad it crawls up his backside soiling his night shirt and sending everyone in the room running for the can of lysol air freshner. Forgetful ones do have their "moments". Just remember Al: run the ball, run the ball, run the ball.

Joe Bugel: For actually reaching down into his pants and having the fortitude to implement a real zone-blocking scheme instead of this geriatric 80s style stuff we've been doing for the past what, three years? Way to catch up with the rest of the league. Let's not have an "Al Saunders" moment and forget this when Portis comes back, he's only been screaming for zone-blocking since day one.

Lloyd Brandon: Another multi-catch game? What are you thinking? This must be stopped before you catch 25 balls, you're going to make all of us look bad.

SwissHam: Bork! Bork! Bork!

Betts: Awesome running job, just let Al know you want to run straight ahead, not those sweeps towards the sidelines that totally ruin your 7.0+ rushing average.

Carlos Rogers: Great game, but seriously, are you allergic to pigskin? It really looked like you wanted to throw the ball to the turf when you intercepted it. I can't rag on you too much, you did save the game for us after all.

Sean Taylor: What can I say? Those bonecrunching hits are great. Too bad you missed St. Reggie on that one in the backfield. On second thought, it looked like you were going so fast it might have killed him; probably a good thing all around then.

Boonell: Heard all the étouffée and Dixie beer gave you bad gas, sorry to hear about that. Don't worry though, doesn't look like you'll need to get into a game anytime soon so you can let your waistband expand somewhat.

SkinsFans: WoooHooo! Five and nine, playoffs here we c--wait a sec. Never mind.

Ok since Boofer/Redskins Suck asked me to do it I will compare the records of Bill Parcells and Joe Gibbs:
B. Parcells since 2004 - 23-22 Regular Season 0-0 Playoffs
J. Gibbs since 2004 - 20-25 Regular Season, 1-1 Playoffs.
The difference is +3 games for Parcells for Regular Season, +1 game of Gibbs Postseason.
All this says to me is both teams suck at times. I can admit this has been a bad season for the Skins but we are going to finish strong get a favoravble schedule next year and go from there. What is going to happen when TO jumps off the edge and dolphin safe Tuna tells Clayface Jones "It's him or me"

I think I've figured out the mystery of the "Al Saunders" moments.... He's trying to put the game away, but using the wrong method to do it. Quick strikes with trick plays, ummmm not this team. You put the game away by running, running and when you've done that, you run some more.

AMTTS, my roommate placed 3rd in the annual Philly Wingbowl, held the Friday before the superbowl, last year. In order to get in, you have to perform an eating "stunt." The winner of the wingbowl (183 if I remember correctly?) drank a gallon of milk for his stunt. As soon as he was finished, blood shot out of his nose. I saw it. It was on comcast on demand in the area last January.

Oh yeah, and he did it in 42 seconds.

Can someone explain what was so slick about Payton's challenge? Having to watch in a bar was a bit distracting. If you saw the women in the bar I was at, you would understand.

I'm with Kenny Albert: why not just call a timeout?

Posted by: P Diddy | December 18, 2006 2:51 PM | Report abuse

Diddy, hold on, so you're telling me there is a bar in Seattle which will put the Skins game on teevee, has WiFi so you can keep up with the blog, AND has hot women? Good grief, I need to do a better job shopping sports bars.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 18, 2006 2:56 PM | Report abuse

Diddy - The slick part about it was that IF the ball happened to have come out before Betts knee was down, the Saints would have recovered and not been charged a timeout (bonus!). As it was, Betts' knee was down so the Saints were charged a timeout. The genius is that a review is longer than a timeout so the defense had more time to rest.

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 18, 2006 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Can someone explain what was so slick about Payton's challenge?

The announcers claimed he did it on purpose to help rest his defense and throw the timing of the skins offense off, all supposedly because it takesttribute something to in more time to review a play than one would get from a time out.

I think this is a case of overthinking a bonehead move. Peyton thought the play should have been reversed and threw a flag. The Skins botch the next few plays so instead of looking like a complete imbecile he ends up looking like a genius.

Never tribute to intelligence what can be adequately explained by ignorance or stupidity.

RedskinsSuck, Boofer et al....one question...how many of your fans went to NO to help folks out the week before Dallas played them?

I'm a Redskins fan who proudly shares that title with hundreds of thousands of others, regardless of the team's situation. This week, I'm particularly proud of those Skins fans who went to NO and tried to make life a little bit better for the people who live there. I celebrate their efforts as much as I do the win on the field. As far as I'm concerned, nothing you have to offer has any merit because you can't even fathom the integrity and compassion of those people. It ain't just about the team, goober, it's about the family.

Of course, Meg's theory could be correct too. :)

Megskin, you're kicking butt today. Excellent work.

PG, I can't understand our yo-yo D either, as individuals or as a unit. I'm mystified by Double Move and utterly fascinated by Andre Carter AKA Instant Beast. Even the linebackers look good yesterday! That was bizarre and wonderful.

Can't help wondering what next year will look like if they and the rest of the squad bring it every game. Back to the top of the league in defense would be nice, and it would mean less pressure on Soupy to be the man every series.

I'm with Meg on the challenge issue.

As for the bar...well, it's a pretty bad Greek system graduate joint during Friday and Saturday night, but a great restaurant and better brunch spot the rest of the time.

And, as I might have mentioned at some point, as a former bartender my M.O. is to pretty much only date bartenders. So, I tend to know everyone in town and can ask for whatever game I want on teevee. Just so happened that with the Thursday, Saturday, Sunday night, and Monday night games all being rather compelling, the 'Skins were the best game in town for Sunday afternoon and broadcast locally.

Sadly, I'm not getting my beloved satellite dish re-installed until Thursday, so it looks like lather, rinse, repeat to the same bar tonight to watch what I think could be an awesome Cincinatti/Indianapolis matchup.

megskin,

i totally agree with you about the "Al Saunders" moment. has been the case for the past 4-5 games when we're ahead by 3-7 points, running well, then comes the 3rd quarter and somewhere in the middle of it we start the trickery, gimmick play, etc.

happened yesterday too: Betts is running well then he gets "Al Saundersed".

Apparently there is some weirdness out there that the Skins could still make the playoffs. Does anyone have any clue how this is possible? I am just curious under what scenario that could ever happen ever? I know we have good people on the blog that could figure this out.

Posted by: The Governor | December 18, 2006 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Gov,

As best I can tell tt's not possible. There are 5 teams that have only 6 losses at the moment. Of the teams with 7 losses 4 of the teams play each other making it impossible for both of them to lose.

Posted by: Skinz | December 18, 2006 3:39 PM | Report abuse

ok, this got me completely puzzled.

is it really possible for 3 teams from the same division to go to playoffs?

i've never hear of that before. how's that possible?

Posted by: thor | December 18, 2006 3:52 PM | Report abuse

One wins the division. The other two are the wild card teams.

Skinz,

you said tt's not possible but could you please take another look. maybe there is still something left there. i need one more hit, please. Please?

TOO BAD I'VE ALREADY BEEN DOWN THERE 3 TIMES TO HELP OUT, EVEN GIVING UP MY ANNUAL FAMILY VACATION TO GO THERE. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT SKINNIE FAN BEFORE POSTING. OH YEAH COWBOYS NFC EAST CHAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous | December 18, 2006 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Hard to imagine that all three of our NFC East brethren could qualify for the playoffs, but I think there is a slim chance it could happen. Seems highly likely that the NFC East will get one of the wild card spots.

Won't that just be delightful, to have two or three of our division rivals playing in January while we sit at home, after being picked by many to win the division? Ugh.

Now that we've beaten them, I am wholeheartedly rooting for the Saints to run the table, romping through the NFC. Losing to us is the best thing that could have happened to them. The Pats parlayed a 2003 loss to us into their 21-game winning streak, which of course included the SB win.

ICU- Thanks for the kind words earlier...congrats in advance on your baby girl. Nate- I'd love for her to go into the offseason undefeated. She was cheering her guts out with me yesterday. My wife says it was crying, but I'm sticking with cheering!

I'm sorry.

Something is not right here. There is no way a person who spends every day trying to put down another teams fans anyway he can to show how superior he is - volunteering to help others??? I don't think so. Someone trying to rile up anger in others just for fun everyday for months - being helpful? Sorry, your attitude belies my belief in your "actions." It just does not make sense in any socio-psychological book that has ever been written.

Posted by: charlie | December 18, 2006 4:27 PM | Report abuse

thor, it's possible for three teams from one division to get into the playoffs. The division winner gets in, and if two other teams from a division have better records than everyone else in that conference, based on tie-breakers, etc., they get the two wild card spots. Unlikely and I think without precedent, but definitely possible. Keep an eye on Dallas, Philly and NYG all vying for spots in the NFC.

I think what was cited as impossible (above) was the Skins making it in this year. When we lost to Philly last week I think we were 'mathematically eliminated'. Too many teams ahead of us for any scenario to get us into the playoffs, even if we win out.

If I had to make a comparison, I'd say your the Mel Kiper of this blog.

I hope that was a compliment. I probably post too much (I'm sure my boss would concur, if only he knew...), and I probably come off like a know-it-all. But I really enjoy this.

Nate, if you're the blog Kiper, tell us which NCAA players we should keep an eye on during Bowl Season. Other than Brady Quinn and Troy Smith, who is going at the top of the First? Who will the Skins be looking for?

The semester ends this week so I am drowning in papers and tests and finals and a few children who are simply shocked S-H-O-C-K-E-D! that they're failing because they didn't do any work.

I've been missing the blog and my peeps.

The most important thing for this post is a huge thank you and *hugs* and *kisses* for the skinny fans who went to NO last week. We all do what we can and we thank the gods for those like you who can go the extra mile.

LOL. This just went from bad to worse. I think I prefer playing Vitale to playing Kiper.

Rocky McIntosh looked AWESOME baby! Get the kid more snaps, coach, come ON! And I can't say enough about this kid Golston, a diaper dandy if there ever were one! A blue chip special! But never mind that, I want to talk about those Blue Devils! who wants to go down to Cameron and face them with the great crowd, Coach K has them playing phenomenal ball this year! (jumps up on scorer's table screeching unintelligibly)

And now to the game. . . .

Do mine eyes deceive me? Twas that not Carlos Rodgers who did indeed pluck the pigskin from the air? Twas it not also he who did stoppeth the final throw in the Saints end zone?

Earth to mother ship
Earth to mother ship
Be advised that we will keep the body snatcher you implanted in Double Move over.

Okay seriously Joe dude we are 4-8! GO FOR it on 4 and 2 in the red zone. What's the worst that can happen at this point? It's not like we can get two L's for one game or that it carries into the next season. Still nice job SwissHam.

D - woohoo! What a game what a game what a game what a mighty good game! Mister Kah-tair! People don't fear the Reaper . . .wait unless you're an opponent. Rocky Mountain High! Woo I saw him like a bunch right? (or do mine eyes deceive me again?)

O-line - yippee! Need a little depth there though just in case.

Soups! Okay not sure why you were winging the ball out into the parking lot on a few of those but hey no worries. The TD was gah-geeoos!

Okay now some ugghy stuff. BLloyd - um yeah you caught a ball or two but apparently you inherited Double Move's idea that it's recess and you just have to run around and stuff. Soups ain't gonna throw it to you bra if you keep this up.

I too am guilty of thinking up until the INT at the end that we were gonna lose. I actually spent a lot of the game giggling like Salieri because I couldn't just could not believe what was happening.

But we won HAIL TO THE REDSKINS! I like the little bit of mojo we've got going. Hopefully the powers that be take this as an opportunity to NOT do anything rash in the offseason - oh and perhaps those pigs who've been hibernating in my a$$ will come out soon and take flight.

I propose a blaw- it may already exist but still. I propose we ignore, completely ignore all posts that come in ALL CAPS until and unless the following things happen:
1. They contain content that is by consensus new and thought provoking/funny.
2. The Dallas Cowboys win the SuperBowl and then the week after can be turned over to ALL CAPS.

I'm all for trash talking and laughing and stuff. I'm even for "taking it like a man" when we suck which we do but argh these are sooo boring. I skip over them but not the responses from the ploggers whom I love. So I get sucked into the vortex and I think my vertigo is coming back because my eyes are rolling so much.

HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!
