Inactives

The usual suspects are watching today, and Springs, Vincent, Jansen, Daniels and Wright all back.

So, the scratches are Rumph, Espy, Whitley, BOschetti, Patten, Yoder, Montgomery.

Will be intesting to see how JC handles the blitz today, and what adjustments they make.

Cheers.

Let the hilarity and hijinks begin!

Way to write your guts out Jason. Again, an awesome article on JC.

Someone on the other thread also mentioned the milk article, which everyone should read, if only for the punchline in the last paragraph. Great stuff.

BTW, speaking of journalists bringing the thunder...Tim Russert's Meet the Press this morning was stellar.

ROMO-MANIA #1 QB

Posted by: Anonymous | December 10, 2006 12:48 PM | Report abuse

Hey guys! Since I've been off for a couple of days (relaxing my guts out), I'm curious what you guys thought of Boz's column on Gibbs. Sure, I could read the threads, but that would take years, cost millions of lives.....

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 10, 2006 12:49 PM | Report abuse

GO COWBOYS! PARCELLS GREATEST COACH EVER!

Posted by: Anonymous | December 10, 2006 12:49 PM | Report abuse

I thought Boz's column was great. I also think St. Joe will forget everything he said by January. But as Jason commented in the prior thread, it's critical that the WashPo get St. Joe's statements out there on the record.

As fans, we're not even remotely equivalent to shareholders of a public company. None of us benefit financially from a team's upside (which, incidentally, is why I find Super Bowl parades so comical). We don't have any obligation to hold the team accountable. If they don't perform, we can simply turn off the teevee or root for another team.

That said, this team is rudderless right now. For them to not know it is unfortunate. They likely all think it's simply misfortune (Prioleau's injury, Portis's injury, etc). But there is a systemic ineptitude to how this team assembles talent and approaches its long-term planning. Boz's article was the first hint that St. Joe might, maybe, perhaps, kinda sorta is beginning to think the same thing.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 10, 2006 12:57 PM | Report abuse

Boz's column gave me hope. Coach Joe said what I needed to hear him say.

Posted by: Lavar Walt Clark | December 10, 2006 12:59 PM | Report abuse

Hey Cindy. Great to have you back. It was great to hear Coach Joe say he is willing to hire a GM. Putting that into action is another story.

Oh, since it's something of a tradition at this point, here's the post where I say that I'm way too hungover to do anything but watch football all day.

That's my excuse. What's yours for watching this absolute travesty of a football team?

There has to be a better game on than this one...

Posted by: dealer | December 10, 2006 1:11 PM | Report abuse

editor, i didn't have issues with that column but everything that followed...and if you'd like to know you gonna have to read the thread :)

and basically everything p diddy said, word for word.

betts needs to keep his head up when he hits that hole...

Posted by: dealer | December 10, 2006 1:17 PM | Report abuse

jm, if you think i have a problem with betts you missed the whole point of my arguement.

i winced when gibbs made the trade for portis and brunell. cuz i thought he should've given the players who were already here a cahnce...and no, i'm not saying anything bad about portis by saying that neither.

Posted by: dealer | December 10, 2006 1:19 PM | Report abuse

OK dealer that is good to know. I am not sure about the cap hit. (maybe JLC can give us the breakdown on that) But I rather for us to give it to someone here that has proven himself.

How is Campbell looking today? I am at home packing and listening to Sunny and Sam. It seems he been looking good so far.

Posted by: dealer | December 10, 2006 1:32 PM | Report abuse

why don't they show the spank anymore!?!

Posted by: dealer | December 10, 2006 1:33 PM | Report abuse

I'm not being negative. I think I drank too much champagne. You know, when you get on the other side of 30, every ache and pain is cause for concern. Every calorie is precious. Every hair on your head may be your last. I think F. Scott Fitzgerald was a lot more eloquent ("thinning briefcase of single men to know", and so on). Paul Simon was a wee bit more eloquent as well ("Why am I soft in the middle, the rest of my life is so hard").

But that's what I feel right now. 33rd birthday coming up, and I had too much duck confit and pecan pie last night, to boot :-)

Dealer I still say it's very long. Looks less "circlular" but still big.

JM,

I'll step in on the Betts signing. I dont'have a problem resigning the guy. The problem is we always seem to sign players at the height of their value. Gibbs had seen him in practice for over 2 years. If you believe in him then why not sign him in the offseason.

We now sign the guy after the biggest game of his prof. career and 4 games before he's an FA.

Posted by: Skinz | December 10, 2006 1:42 PM | Report abuse

they should challenge the spot. ARE got robbed by a a foot.

Best two pecan pies I've ever had:

1. Chez Paul's in New Orleans (those of you making the trip must check his place out)
2. Tableau in Las Vegas (in the Wynn)

There's a new restaurant in Seattle that has a pecan pie with maple bourbon ice cream. Totally checking it out this week.

Found it Cindy, and since B-Llyod is once again a non-factor, I'll repost it below.

**************REPOST*******************

If no other team pursued a free agent, would Danny and Vinny negotiate against each other just to drive up the price on principle?

Danny: "Well, looks like no one else really wants Lloyd and we only have 3 or 4 other quality receivers, so I think we could snap him up easy for a cool million or so. Whattya think, Vinny?"

Vinny: "First, I think that was a GRAND shot, sir. Simply marvelous, and might I add how great you look in those tight white shorts? As for Lloyd, I'd give him two million, plus double that in a signing bonus.

Danny: "Oh, you clever, clever boy. You just THINK you're sneaky, but I can see right through you...and those darling shorts....But I WILL have Lloyd because I think he'll make a great flex player...er, I mean, whattacallit, one of those slot receivers. So, 5 million, plus 3 million bonus, and send Redskins One PRONTO."

Vinny: "Sir, your iron-trap mind and ability to use technical football terms with ease never ceases to amaze me -- nice shot, sir! -- and I hate to presume to think I could get the upper hand on you here. But...and maybe I don't know what I am doing...BUT...I'd give him 8 million a year, 5 million signing bonus, and...get this...AND...if we don't want to pay the second signing bonus installment, we'll make the rest of his salary -- ALL of it -- GUARANTEED. Howboutthat?"

Danny: "I knew I kept you around for a reason...you're so cute when you think you've pulled one over on me. But I didn't become a multi-gazillionaire in several unrelated-to-football industries because I couldn't negotiate contracts that were complicated and intense and yet totally unrelated to the ability to evaluate football talent! Au contraire, ma petite bonne-bonne! I'll throw 12 milliion a year at him, 10 million signing bonus, guarantee the whole damn thing, produce his next rap album -- I'm hip like that -- AND,...wait for it...introduce him to Tom Cruise. Game, set, match, my little Vinbambino. Same time tomorrow? I've got a hankerin' to sign a truly outstanding back-up center-bend-over-and-hike-it-to-the-kicker-guy guy. Yeah, one of those....Latte?"

I guess it is the natural consequence of a 4-8 season, but it's pretty ridiculous how many philly fans there are at the game. from the camera shots of the crowd i've seen, it seems that at least half the fans are philly fans, and the crowd noise reminds me of cardinals games against the cowboys - where the crowd noise is at least as favorable to the away team as it is for the home team. sad.

Jones-Drew very solid today. We've been surfing around the league today....Amazing performance by the Ravens today in KC. It's impossible to win there.....Gints got it back together. And, every time I check in at FedEx, there's an Iggles first down and a fat, bare-chested guy trying to decide which green jersey to wear.

By "this", I meant the game, not the blog. The blog is the perfect distraction for my hungover, post-Adam Archuleta workout butt.

Larry Michael just totally redeemed himself in my book:

"Barring a miracle, the Redskins will have quote 'fought their guts out' but still come away with a loss."

Not going to watch the St. Joe press conference. Someone tell me if we still fought our guts out, if the fans are still the best fans in the world, if up here it's really difficult to get a win, and if God was with us today.

Denver/San Diego...that's the best chance for redeeming my couch surfing for the day.

Wow, off day for Larry Michael -- he usually ass-kisses his lips out.

Posted by: HaikuMan | December 10, 2006 4:01 PM | Report abuse

For me, the key is still the fact that, when they were in it late, they could not stop the Iggles. They just churned out first down after first down. As Tony would say, "They gacked."
I'm a huge AFC West fan, so SD-Den really does it for me. And, of course, Saints-Cowboys -- America's Team vs. America's Team.

Ok..back to the Skins....we keep getting "skinned." Dismal, appalling season. I can easily see us going 4-12. New Orleans next weekend? Why don't we just mail that game in?

Sorry, I've been preaching about the negativity on here and now I'm contributing to it but I simply can't take it anymore.

Alright, the loss, along with the Vikes and Falcon wins, and I'm throwing in the towel on playoff talk. And not just for this year, by the way.

Posted by: Pigskins | December 10, 2006 4:35 PM | Report abuse

We're calculating our guts out and, because we're supersmart, we feel that it's officially over for the Skins.
Even if they run the table and
1) Atlanta loses all its games; Falcons have tiebreaker;
2) Iggles lose all their games; Philly has tiebreaker;
3) Gints lose all their games and lose Dec. 30 at FedEx; Gints have tiebreaker. Best Skins can do in NFC East is 2-4 and worst Gints can do is 3-3.
Hello, math buddies! See anything we don't?

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 10, 2006 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Calm down...the post game crew of course are going to mention a Portis trade...just to get some controversy going. But it ain't gonna happen. We need two good backs and we have them. The only concern is if Clinton does not come back from surgery like his old self.

With three games to go: Have the Skins clinched the biggest flop in the NFL this year? Stillers were in the running, but they have actually revived a bit, and have the 'Ben was hurt' excuse. Based on pre-pre season expectations (realistic Super Bowl shot) I think the Skins are a no-brainer for this distinction. Congrats, guys.

Thank the sweet baby jesus that we are officially out of the playoffs and everyone (including myself in the deep deep recesses of my mind) can stop the nonsense and actually get to the point of evaluating what we have and look to next year.

JC's first interception was horrible. He had somebody in the flat on the same side.

Still like what I see in his perserverance tho. Lots of rooks would have caved after that.

Betts sure looks like a starter to me......although Rev Bro Sweets woulda gone to tha hizzy on a few of those runs.

Short of soups couple of miscues, thought that the offense really left it out there. I think (well, hope really) that next year some of those FGs are TDs.

Got to love the way we ground that out and had a pretty good chance to win it if we punch it in on that last driver rather then kick a FG.

not sure who should have had D. Dawkins on that blitz . . .

Looked like soups did a better job under pressure and made some 3rd down plays. . .

w/r respect to swissham, we just gotta hope he's the next incarnation of akers . . .

I thought AC looked good again, no sacks but seemed like his name was called an awful lot on tackles, even made one for a loss . . .

let's not get started on the safety discussion (AARRGGHHH!). . .

What was up with "oye como va" and those flse starts?!?

Joe must go. There are no moral victories in football. You either win or you don't. I can't believe I'm reading posts that talk about how next year the offense will put up touchdowns instead of field goals. When you can rack up over 400 yards of offense; rush for a bundle; own TOP and STILL lose to go to 4-9, it's time for a coaching change. If Brunell can be benched for ineffective play, the coach needs to be benched for ineffective coaching. Why are playeres held accountable but the coaching staff isn't? Losing by two looks the same as losing by twenty-two.

Time to find a coach who understands winning in the 21st century. Losing records 2 years out of three isn't moving forward. Too, too many coaches on this team. Cut 'em all and start again. Trade CP for a high draft pick.

I can't make myself haiku, so I turn it over to Don McLean.....

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

But february made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn't take one more step.

I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Did you write the book of love,
And do you have faith in God above,
If the Bible tells you so?
Do you believe in rock 'n roll,
Can music save your mortal soul,
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?

Well, I know that you're in love with him
`cause I saw you dancin' in the gym.
You both kicked off your shoes.
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues.

I was a lonely teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck,
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.

I started singin',
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone,
But that's not how it used to be.
When the jester sang for the king and queen,
In a coat he borrowed from james dean
And a voice that came from you and me,

Oh, and while the king was looking down,
The jester stole his thorny crown.
The courtroom was adjourned;
No verdict was returned.
And while lennon read a book of marx,
The quartet practiced in the park,
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died.

We were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Helter skelter in a summer swelter.
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter,
Eight miles high and falling fast.
It landed foul on the grass.
The players tried for a forward pass,
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast.

Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the sergeants played a marching tune.
We all got up to dance,
Oh, but we never got the chance!
`cause the players tried to take the field;
The marching band refused to yield.
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?

We started singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

Oh, and there we were all in one place,
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again.
So come on: jack be nimble, jack be quick!
Jack flash sat on a candlestick
Cause fire is the devil's only friend.

Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage.
No angel born in hell
Could break that satan's spell.
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite,
I saw satan laughing with delight
The day the music died

He was singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
And singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news,
But she just smiled and turned away.
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before,
But the man there said the music wouldn't play.

And in the streets: the children screamed,
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed.
But not a word was spoken;
The church bells all were broken.
And the three men I admire most:
The father, son, and the holy ghost,
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died.

And they were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die.
"this'll be the day that I die."

They were singing,
"bye-bye, miss american pie."
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
Them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "this'll be the day that I die."

1. Best performance: Brunell setting completion record. (What happened to that guy?)

2. Best play: Vincent blocks FG, preventing 3-10 record.

3. Best coaching decision: Calling heads against Jags on OT coin flip, preventing 2-11 record.

Interpretations of St. Joe:

- I'm proud of our guys. They fought their guts out. (We're 4-9 in a year where everyone in the NFC is mediocre. We're fighting our guts out to be less than mediocre.)

- We're all in this together. (Our front office and coaching staff has been as atrocious as our defense and as predictable as our offense.)

- I really want to thank our fans. (Our fans were really in the Holiday spirit by letting so many Eagles fans have their tickets).

I know as fans, we all have a propensity to engage in "end of the world" histrionics when our team loses or when a season flies completely apart. The NFL is so, so strange. Look at this week.

- Tom Brady, arguably the best QB in the League, throws for 78 yards and is benched
- The Cowboys lay a big fat egg at home
- The Cardinals can't beat anyone, but they beat the Seahawks today
- The Chiefs lay an egg at home

The list goes on and on, and all season long, too. Every season, 6-8 of the prior season's playoff teams fail to make it in. Division champions turnover constantly. 10 head coaches are fired every offseason. It's the way it is. I think half the time, the whole game comes down to luck and lucky bounces.

So, yes, the sky has fallen this year. But you never know what next season is going to look like.

In the meantime...Who Dat? :-)

Posted by: P Diddy | December 11, 2006 12:24 AM | Report abuse

oliver,

I completely disagree with your statement re: Gibbs. This was such a mess that it will take time to get straight. team has made bad personel decisions and I don't actually think the flaw is in the FA vs. draft approach but rather in the execution of their chosen approach.

I actually hae to give them credit for trying to be innovative in their approach rather then doing it like everyone else - that in my mind is the path to mediocrity . . .

now some of us would say that would be better then what we have now. nothing ventured, nothing gained . . .

I do think Gibbs underestimated how hard it would be to make up for lost time, however, I am not convinced that he isn't the one to get it fixed . . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 11, 2006 12:29 AM | Report abuse

I agree with your statement. However, he's not right for the situation. It's a sport where energy and passion matter so much. This season has proven that young coaches are able to inspire a great deal. It's not a surprise to me since the 20+ year old generation (the X-geners) needs a lot of enthusiasm and recognition.
It's too late anyway. We just have to hope for the best for next year. With a different head coach hopefully.

Did anyone else enjoy today's game? Jason Campbell was fun to watch. Betts was running through people. The Skins locked up the bottom spot in the NFC East - we'll probably get a home game against the Cardnals and a road game against the Bucs for the 4th time in 3 years. No road trips next year further than Minneapolis. A chance to see the Redskins play at Lambeau. Next year was the first glimmer of some light at the end of the tunnel - 2007 is going to be a fun year to be a Skins fan.

Posted by: Lisa | December 11, 2006 7:55 AM | Report abuse

What is wrong with the Redskins coaching staff? Why not go for it on 4th and 2 with 5 minutes to go and a RB who's rushed for 171 yards? You are down by 5 and have a chance to go for the lead and what does the brain trust do? Play it conservative. Why the f**k would you do that? What's the worse that could have happened: not make it and end up last in the NFC East? That's the problem with NFL coaches. They are so freaking cautious! A college coach would have gone for it no questions asked. And who's the genius that called for a timeout on 4th and short only to kick a FG? Stupid stupid stupid. Grow some balls Joe Gibbs. At least we'll go down firing not laying down and kicking stupid FG.

Posted by: Bart | December 11, 2006 8:07 AM | Report abuse

so our last place assures of playing the last NFC South and West team....how do we know which one of those is away and which of them is home?

cause it would really really suck to play tampa on the road...we only did it twice last year and once this year....not to mention played against them 2 years ago at home. that'd be 5 times in 4 years against a non-division team. way too many in my estimation.

at least we're 2-2 in the last 4 against them.

proud that Campbell could amass a 113 passer rating in the second half after his two-pick first half. "I think I showed my teammates something," said Campbell. "Everyone is looking at you when things aren't going the right way. 'Will he get down and go in the tank?' I'm going to be with them through thick and thin

Good to hear that coming from Campbell. And just in case Boofer you didn't know. Campbell and Romo have the same td's and int's the last two games.

Skinsfan@8KaboveMSL: I have suggested a name before and I'm happy to toss it out there again: Ron Rivera, defensive coordinator for the Bears.

Grandpa Joe ain't gonna fix this mess; he actually made it worse by bringing in Saunders. Front office is a joke, and we're guaranteed a losing season for two out of his three years back. I understand completely why he came back at age 64: big $$. You or I would do the same thing. Plus, with his pedigree, he had every reason to believe that he could do it again. I'm sure Mark Brunell had the same feelings about himself when he was signed up back then. But the simple fact is Joe can't go anymore. He was so worn out after last season that he hired an offensive play caller-and boy have the plays been offensive!

Ladell Betts is the MVP of this team and a reason to hope for the future. But not with this over-hyped coaching staff. Ron Rivera, he's da' bomb!

Once again the game boiled down to playing smart and we gave the game away by committing stupid penalties and turnovers.

In spite of a good physical effort the lack of mental ability turned the tide.

Apparently we hire players who can't count; don't know the rules of the game; lack hand/eye coordination and have no short or long term memory skills.

Carlos Rodgers - He gave me a double move - nothing I could do!!!! - HOW ABOUT NOT BITING ON THE FIRST MOVE EVERY TIME.

i agree with the comment made about a lack of coaching for Campbell since he was drafted. Now that he is starting they are going to work on correcting flaws - he had those flaws when he was drafted and they did nothing for two years?????

The season is over - now is the time to see who plays hard and who quits - those who quit should be gone next year. The sad thing is that now the slackers will probably try harder to save their jobs.

If Gibbs is proud of this then perhaps he should reexamine his coaching skill set and take some self improvement courses in the off season. It is obvious that the team can not play hard and think at the same time (in fact some of the players can't play and think at any time).

I hope our Cowboys fans are happy today. They now know what fun it is to watch a really good defense play. (NOT)

Next Sunday will realy be a gut-check. After playing our guts out all year we probably don't have enough left to make it through the rest of the season. Perhaps we could examine the FA list and do some more gut transplants. Better yet how about looking for some brain transplants? Particularly for the coaching staff.

Boy! These grapes are really getting sour - I better quit.

Who think that Boofer/Smack/no name is going to show up today?

I really hope double G get a head coaching job from another team and leave.

Another reason to hate Notre Dame. Quinn doesn't win and Wiess states it doesn't matter we will see the real winner come April. Why not just be happy for the winner? I hope they get their ass kick again this year and Smith goes before Quinn.

k-man, the away game is NFC South -- Tampa Bay. The home game is NFC West, which right now is Arizona, but there is still a mathematical chance that San Fran chokes its way into last place (they face Seattle, Arizona, and Denver). Arizona is on a 2 game winning streak and SF is on a 3 game losing streak. [Of course, Arizona still has to play Denver and San Diego, so most likely, Leinart will be visiting FedEx next year.]

STOP THE PRESSES! Taylor Jacobs had a reception (his first for the year) yesterday for 5 yards. This makes it official -- the 49ers got the better end of the Jacobs-Rumph trade.

Just to get out all the negativity before trying to send good mojo to the Skins (and hoping that the Saints start resting players for the playoffs) ... the former 2005 Skins did OK yesterday:

- Stoutmire returned his Romo pick for 10 yards.

- In Walt Harris' 4 tackles yesterday, one caused a loss of 4 and one kept the Packers from converting on third down.

- Robert Royal caught 2 for 13 yards, including a touchdown.

Posted by: dcsween | December 11, 2006 9:38 AM | Report abuse

JM, the D was pretty great yesterday. The one CAmpbell pick was returned for a TD and the other set them up at our 40ish. Other than the last drive, the D was on point yesterday. And Rocky finally got some action...I never got a read on how he really played, but it was nice to see him out there getting some experience. Yesterday was no reason to call for GDub's head.

Posted by: WrongDog | December 11, 2006 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Yesterday was a game for the ages - the ages when you start to have a shorter memory and a wandering attention span. Having a nice overly-wined evening the night before didn't make the first half go down any better, that's for sure. The cranial hammer time was done for by the second, happily. Of course, that came back with the frequent texting of 'WHO DAT!' from my girlfriend last night, who is as fervent of an 'Aints fan as any of them.

I wish I didn't have to settle for taking tidbits of hope and flashes of future brilliance as a victory, but alas, I shall have to. The Souper was a model of poise and Gibbsonian character after a first half that had the aromatic qualities of French underarms and Sandusky, Ohio. Betts had himself a decent game, too. When California Pizza gets back into the lineup next year, we might actually have a little Thunder & Lightning going.

Hrm, what else. Let's see, defense, spotty, offensive Fat Boys, spotty in the first half. Ham & Swish had a fairly good day. Compared to Clutch Novak, he looks like he's kicking downhill, to bodge a euphemism. Yup, that about covers it.

And speak of the woman, there's another 'Who Dat!' on my phone. Time for me to tell her to just wait for next week and see what happens! Oh, wait....

WrongDog yes the D did play well for the most part yesterday. However, over the year they have been down right awful. Go back and look at the breakdown that Megskin gave us. The D been going down (remember first year really was Marvin Lewis players)every since double G been here. Due to his ego and his belief that anyone can be replace because it is his system. Do you really think he has changed?

Posted by: jm220 | December 11, 2006 10:00 AM | Report abuse

JM, I don't think he's changed at all--and I don't think he will. But I do think he is a very good D-co and should be kept on the staff. We need continuity and stability, not change for the sake of change.

And Marvin Lewis wasn't even here in 03, so I don't think you can just discount what Gdubs did in his first year here.

Posted by: WrongDog | December 11, 2006 10:12 AM | Report abuse

I think Saunders has done a good job. It's hardly fair to blaim him for the downfalls. Go read the Jaws article for Jason's first start. He says the plays are designed correctly.

Compare this offense to the one we were running in the playoffs last year and tell me which you prefer. Gibbs finally did his job and made Al adjust his play calling and you can see what has happened. I think he also like Betts alot more than Clinton who is the only player he's really critised all year.

By the way we need to trade down in the draft and pick up 2nd and 3rd rounders.

Posted by: Skinz | December 11, 2006 10:15 AM | Report abuse

WrongDog I agree we need continuity and stability. However, you have to look at double G (if the reports are correct) as one of the reason there is no continuity and stability. Because he is the one that said let key D players go because they could easily replace.

Hiring a GM will not fix the Redskins problems. The only way hiring a GM fixes the Redskins problems is if you allow the GM to bring in his own coach and staff and allow him to set up the organization his way. Gibbs bringing in a GM into the structure he already has in place would be backwards. The GM would also need to have final say on all personnel matters which I don't think Gibbs would give up.

jm220, you seem to have an intense dislike for Williams - kind of like Montana Skins Fans hatred of everyone.

For what it is worth, Williams was asked yesterday on the Postgame Show whether he blamed the players first or looked at his game plan for the blame. He stated emphatically (and believably) that he always looks in the mirror first - and he also stood up for his guys yesterday - truly gave them credit. It seemed sincere to me.

Posted by: Lisa | December 11, 2006 10:23 AM | Report abuse

Who was it that dropped that would-be INT floater of a lame duck Garcia threw? (his 2nd would-be INT) Redskins D was pretty good, but that second dropped INT would have put the skins in position for another field goal (Ufta!)

simple math:
Redskins score 19 points
Eagles score 21 points

21-19 = 2
Field goal = 3 points
19 + 3 = 22

22 > 21

Its the little things. At least we can't say they blew the game with a half time lead or they gave up after being down 21-3.

Posted by: Dorf | December 11, 2006 10:25 AM | Report abuse

You can have a GM come in after a coach. You just can't have the Coach be the President. THe GM needs autonomy but it's doable. Ask Seattle and Gibbs when Caserley came in.

As long as the owner puts them on equal footing it can work. I'm not saying that would happen in Washington but that's what needs to happen.

Posted by: Skinz | December 11, 2006 10:25 AM | Report abuse

I wouldn't go that far Lisa. I am just looking at some of the people he let go because of his system belief. Coaches should be held accountable just as the players. What are the reason not playing Rock more so he be ready for next year? Everyone and their grandma knows that run on my side Hold is not good.

Quote from Carlos:

"Gave me a double move and kind of ran towards the middle of the field; can't do nothing about it," Rogers said.

Uh, yeah you can. How about you break up the pass? Or better yet, spend some time with the juggs machine and pick off a ball that hits your damn hands for once.

Why, exactly, did we get rid of Smoot and draft this guy?

Listening to 980 since I took today off to pack for tomorrow. It is crazy how people are calling for a CP trade. How soon do we forget? Betts have been good the last couple of games. However, he hasn't have a complete heathy year since being here. The number of yards without TD's speak volumes to me. CP would have broke a couple of those run and without questions we have touchdowns.

Williams was also asked in the Post Game Show about Rocky and the one play he was in. He said they planned to put him in for more plays but had to change the scheme a bit. Said he will look at film to see how he did and will go from there.

I think (or I'm hoping) that the Friend article brought Williams down to earth.

We certainly do not need to trade Portis.....having him and Ladell as a tandem should work out really well. In fact, the last thing we need to do is make a lot of changes yet again. Remember 2005? We made very few changes...did not break the bank and had our best season in a long, long time.

I feel bad for all the drunks that come out already down $50 or so from the $7 beers and are not capable of using rational thought to say no to buying "#@$! the Eagles" t-shirts. Just think, when they wake up Monday morning they'll think "when am I ever going to wear this shirt" because it is the filthiest mcnastiest shirt ever and you can only really wear it when the eagles play the redskins (twice a year) Are those guys out there selling "#@$! the Falcons" shirts as well? quick thoughts on Betts Vs. Portis

1. Portis didn't play the first two games of this season. Where was Betts?

2. Portis did much better (scored TD's) in Gibbs offense than Betts is doing in Gibbs offense.

3. This season in Al Saunder's offense Portis had 7 TD's in like 8-9 games while not completely healthy. (on a side note: He's a gamer and should be wrapped up like they do with LT in San Diego. This idiotic coaching staff is the reason for putting him in harms way in a meaningless game.)

4. i really wish for portis sake they trade him. he deserves better than this dysfunction of a team!!!! it's very rare to find an athlete in this era of bling like him and LT. he's not LT but had he stayed in denver or gone somewhere better he might've been a close 2nd best RB in the league.

5. so PLEASSE PLEASE, SKINS ORG TRADE PORTIS!!! AND MOSS while you're at it.

Oh, there she is, Jane Doe calling for jm220. Mm hmm.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 11, 2006 12:30 PM | Report abuse

I think the majority of people who are in favor of trading CP are voting yes because they hope a trade would yield multiple players/draft picks needed to fill some of exisiting/future holes in the Skins roster.

I think most of those yes votes quickly turn into nos if Jason and others are right and the best the Skins could get trading CP is a 2nd or 3rd round round draft pick in the upcoming draft

1. Shouldn't the Post be re-running Wilbon's column blasting the Skins dumb ass play calling? For most of that game, the Eagles best defensive player was Skins coach who kept calling pass plays
2. How pathetic is this division that not only are the Eagles a wild card team, depending on next week's results, they might be leading it even though they can neither run the ball nor stop the run?
