Hall Starts in Rogers' Place

CB Carlos Rogers is not starting, which comes as a surprise to us, and no doubt to him as well. DeAngelo Hall, a guy he figured might come in here and perhaps end up getting some of his cash, is starting, along with Shawn Springs.

As for inactives:

S Chris Horton (shoulder), DT Cornelius Griffin (shoulder), T Jon Jansen (knee), LB Marcus Washington (ankle), WR Malcolm Kelly, G Will Montgomery, OL D'Anthony Batiste, and Colt Brennan (third QB).

Mike Green starts for Horton. Anthony Montgomery starts for Griffin. H.B. Blades starts for Washington.

Bengals are without QB Carson Palmer, RB Chris Perry, RB Kenny Watson, S Chinedum Ndukwe, T Levi Jones, TE Ben Utecht, WR Jerome Simpson , G Evan Mathis.

Don't worry, Carlos. Shawn Springs and His Incredible Aching Calf won't be able to go 60 minutes, so you'll get some playing time today.

That's a suprise, although Hall has better hands than Rogers.

'Skins are desperate for turnovers.

this is a good way to piss off a premier corner back in the league before trying to resign him to a long-term deal... screw springs. no point in pissing rogers or hall off for a guy thats 85 years old and plays in 3 out of the 16 games

Posted by: mopp04 | December 14, 2008 11:53 AM | Report abuse

OK this is startig to look really bad now. How in God's green earth do you not start Rogers. He has had a good year and Springs has not played more than what 5 games? WTF

Posted by: icetotalpackage | December 14, 2008 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Interesting.

I think the Redskins starting corners for a long time to come (*hope based comment to follow*) will be Rodgers and Hall.

Also, I like to see Chad Rinehart getting some playing time. We need to know if he is part of the solution to our geriatric O.L. problems.

I agree, this is a bad idea. Springs is imjury prone and old. He skrewed Hall on a possible interception in the Giants game at FedEx. Rogers, Smoot and Hall are killer CB trio. Throw Springs to saftey to replace Horton for the game.

Posted by: erleach | December 14, 2008 11:57 AM | Report abuse

Double Move got burnt for the 4th quarter TD against the Ravens. Game over.

Looks like Blache is going with what he thinks are his 2 best corners right now, not worrying about egos or offseason ramifications.

Posted by: swowra | December 14, 2008 11:58 AM | Report abuse

Stone Finger Rogers cannot catch a ball that hits him in the hands. How many has he dropped? At critical times? Hall has been a real 'ball hawk' and come up with the turnovers this D needs with an anemic D line. Getting out of Oakland looks like it inspired him!

Posted by: splitbill | December 14, 2008 12:00 PM | Report abuse

I suppose we'll see all of our corners in the game at various points.

Springs deserves to start.

He may not have practiced much or played any significant minutes in weeks, but he DID finally get the varicose veins surgically removed from his calf area, so he's good to go.

Also, I think he impressed the coaches in the Giants game by fighting for that would-be interception that almost went to D. Hall.

Don't think that your subtle sarcasm is lost on us sycophants, MrRedskin21!

P.S. I was going to go with "psychophants", or even "psychopants", but spell check is giving me the evil eye.

This is actually pretty shocking news. Of course this might have to do with matchups more than anything. Springs is still the better physical cover corner (if he could ever stay healthy), so matching him up on Housh may be the best way to go. And Hall has earned his place as the guy that needs to be out there on every down, simply for big-play ability.

I don't agree with Springs over Rogers, but I can see why they would do it. (I also remember the coaches saying that the reason Springs tweaked his calf last time is because he got cold sitting on the sideline, only playing a handful of snaps, which led to not being properly warmed up when he did go full speed on the field. That could also play into this decision, a way for the coaches to ensure that Springs isn't asked to go full speed on a cold muscle.)

Why is Malcolm Kelly inactive? Guess someone has to sit to make room for Fred Davis.

Zorn is going after CP for missing practice and yet this is the first time in weeks that Springs practice and he starts! This makes no sense and will cause a big problem if you ask me. Unless Rogers broke some rule or something.

+++"What makes Portis run?" is actually the kind of story that makes most readers bored: the professional athlete who hails from a crime-riddled, drug-addled background. I drive my Masarati away from those kind of stories.+++---MistaMoe

Please!!! I'm already an emotional wreck from it being the Holidays and such as. Your warm and fuzzy take on society has me weeping like a little girl.

But please, more details on your Masarati! I really like the Quadroporte, which as anyone familiar with Italian knows, means "Four portes."

Can you share some more Christmas cheer with us? Maybe a yarn about swindling an impoverish orphan out of his last slice of nutcake?

Springs will probably start at corner on the first play and then be moved to safety for the rest of the game allowing Rogers to play the rest of the game. I don't think its a huge deal, it's well known the Skins like to flip flop their CB's throughout the game.

Wow. I was fooled. I thought Zorn knew how to handle egos.

Hmmm. Could it be that doofus Fullyfoop or whatever his handle is, is actually Zorn?

I hope Hall is getting a new lease on his career since getting out of Oakland, but you'll all be cursing him when he gets burned for 40 yards and you'll want "stone hands" back in. The way I look at it, put "the calf" at safety, and start Smooty and Los, bringing Hall in on nickel and dime packages. Who's taller Los or Hall? I'm sure T.J and Ocho are much taller than both.....might cause matchup problems....Bengals can only win with a passing game, but being a Skins fan I'll say no chance. Just hope the offensive line can hold up today........PLEASE!!!!!

S Chris Horton (shoulder), DT Cornelius Griffin (shoulder), T Jon Jansen (knee), LB Marcus Washington (ankle), WR Malcolm Kelly, G Will Montgomery, OL D'Anthony Batiste, and Colt Brennan (third QB).

Wait! You buried the lede!

MALCOM KELLY IS INACTIVE!!!!

Who could have seen that coming?

To all the Zorn-rippers, I would imagine that the decision to start Springs over Rogers is coming from Greg Blache.

It's s huge deal if you're former starting CB Rogers, who was having his best year, came back early from a devastating knee injury and saw his coach announce to the world that he won't be starting.

I thought Zorn's mishandling of the Portis situation was an aberration. Now I don't think so.

First he sits his star running back on national TV for an ENTIRE HALF, then he chops down a star corner's ego, apparently, RIGHT before game time...

Portis is a primadonna that needs to be put in his place. Sndyer is letting Zorn be undermined.

I don't think Zorn is involved in what the Defense does. It's Blache's ship to run on that side of the ball.

Or the way we cursed Shawn Springs for getting burned for 4 TDs by Terrell Owens last year -- then blamed the loss on Jason Campbell throwing for 348 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT.

Thank God Watson's out. It would be one thing to lose to the Bungles but what if you got beat by some guy you cut who went on to be a Pro Bowler for another team?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 14, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Fox just showed a stat indicating that CIN is 9-2-1 against NFC teams at home. So will they become 10-2-1 or will WAS make them 9-3-1?

Eleven straight run plays and the Redskins vaunted defense can't stop them. Clock eating drive. Perfectly set up doubloe move pass.

You don't blame Rogers for that TD. Deion in his prime, Oshumuga, and one or two others can recover and stop that play.

Meanwhile, I saw Hall get beaten like a rented mule by a rookie Eddie Royal, and ended up with two unsportsmanlike penalties.

If he's covering T.J or Ocho Cinco without help, expect more of the same.

Rogers is so overrated, it's ridiculous. He got beat constantly last week. Quarterbacks aren't afraid to throw his way. MeAngelo is not any better, but at least he can catch.

Posted by: paperboy76 | December 14, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Case in point, just got beat pretty bad by Chris Henry for the TD. Yeah, Rogers is a pro-bowler :-/

Posted by: paperboy76 | December 14, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins are playing like crap! Our defense has fallen off the face of the earth. Campbell is getting too locked onto receivers and not looking around the field for other open receivers. It's just sad to see how much this team has regressed.
