Inactives/Other Stuff

Injured QB Jason Campbell, WR Anthony Mix, CB John Eubanks (infected toe), TE Brian Kozlowski, LB Randall Godfrey, C Mike Pucillo, and DL Ryan Boschetti are inactive.

For the Giants, return specialist David Tyree is a late scratch after his mother died of a heart attack Saturday night.

The Skins cannot be eliminated from the playoffs no matter what happens tonight. However, if they lose the Carolina Panthers would pass Washington on the playoff ladder, as the Panthers (6-8) have a better NFC record. With the Saints (7-7) winning, Skins fans need to root for them to lose at least one of the final two games (vs. Philly, at Chicago).

Guess Mix won't get a chance to show the Giants that they should have kept him. On the playoff note, hopefully the Iggles can take down NO next week.

Westbrook downing the ball on the 1 is a weird play. Wouldn't you take the points there?

Posted by: PDiddy | December 16, 2007 7:21 PM | Report abuse

not sure I've ever seen something like w-brook just did. . .

I understand trying to run down the clock . . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | December 16, 2007 7:21 PM | Report abuse

While I think I should be lauding Westbrook for his selflessness, I think he'd have been better off taking the TD that would have made it a two-possession game. So what if you give the Cowboys a chance to score? That hasn't exactly worked out well for them....
And, if you've got Westbrook in fantasyland, I'm guessing you're saying bad words right now.

Posted by: TheCindy | December 16, 2007 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Troy really seemed to lie Westbrook's play.. .

Posted by: sherryz710 | December 16, 2007 7:23 PM | Report abuse

curious to see if he figured taht out on his own or if it is something that was disccussed. . .

pretty much turned out to be a check mate . . .

Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | December 16, 2007 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Obviously, it worked...but strange.

Vegas had the game as Dallas by 10, so that wasn't an issue...

Posted by: PDiddy | December 16, 2007 7:24 PM | Report abuse

I just hope Romo brings Jessica to DC with him for our game. He plays terribly with a girlfriend in the stands.

Posted by: Lisa_R | December 16, 2007 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 16, 2007 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Lisa,

Let's call and invite her!

Posted by: mmok | December 16, 2007 7:31 PM | Report abuse

I have a pretty good idea where Jessica could sit, just in case they have trouble finding her a seat for the game.

Posted by: PDiddy | December 16, 2007 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Alright, David Garrard's post-game press conference outfit is OUTSTANDING. Best since Deion.

Posted by: PDiddy | December 16, 2007 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Slightly different situation but probably relevant, think back to the Eagles Skins game that the Eagles won. They Eagles were up 1 and instead of running out the clock, the Skins let Westbrook go right through for the score. Since it was an 8 pt game, it was an especially poor decision as it give us new life. Since this score would have made it a 2 possession game, it is highly unlikely that the girls would have comeback. But going down at the one ends the game barring a kneeling fumble.

As a newly liberated ex-Skins fan, I can not wait for the contest this evening.

I was born in Georgetown hospital in October 1967 and bled burgundy and gold until today.

I have rationalized, empathized,...etc.. to keep my faith.

I finally do not have the spirit to make it work anymore. Why? Caring needs to be mirrored. Our owner is an individual that lacks the intensity of my reflection. I will not pretend to venture into this individuals internal dialogue.

While that prattle is neither here nor there, when it comes to the trading of capital for product, a choice is made.

As anyone that watched the film a 'beatiful mind' and got the concept of "equilibrium" (i was an economics major) an imbalance is is an anomaly and will be corrected.

As my detractors will have fun with this, I challenge anyone to go toe to toe with me in an intellectual argument and see who the fool is.

You love to think I am full of sh*t. Others want to see what they want to see.

You are a fool. And yes, I should not have posted again, but due to the pervasive obnoxious dunderheadedness, this last one will finish it off.

The undeniable pervasive theme and tone set forth by the majority of individuals within this mini society, prone and pathetically lacking in any insightfulness or just plain intellectual honesty is patent embarassment.
Yes, this is an indictment upon you. What I have always found most troubling and why I am leaving, is the pure lack of thoughtfulness.

Even worse, peole such as you will rationalize that I am just n "idiot."

sween, you read my mind re: stadium conditions.

Cindy, I was going to ask if you knew what the Swamplands press box situation is like.

To continue with my theme of separate but unequal, I like to think of Boz and Wize in a luxury sweet, quaffing champagne and getting shoulder massages whilst swapping stories with Lupica and the other NYC sports page bigwigs.

While the Jasons sit at the very top of the stadium, in an open-air box with an obstructed view, directly under a speaker blaring nonstop Bon Jovi. And Steinbog just keeps stamping his feet out in the parking lot, trying to warm him hands on the dying coals of a long-gone tailgater's grill.

that BEAUTIFUL punt by Feegles? THAT was into the wind.

Posted by: dcsween | December 16, 2007 9:17 PM | Report abuse

Todd Collins 0/8 0 yards
E. Manning 2/10 13 yards

....still a statistical dead heat!

LH, give me a break. I'm trying to visualize the game using my admittedly fertile imagination, the commentary up here, the little player head shots on the ESPN "Gamecast," and a radio broadcast which is about fifteen minutes behind and, in any event, features Sam Huff.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 16, 2007 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Todd Collins 2/11, 66 yards
E. Manning 3/14, 16 yards

I think Todd's just getting warmed up... he's still kicking Eli's butt, and 10 years *could* put a little rust on your game! Let's see how the next drive goes!

I can see we got a five-yd reception when we needed 10, so obviously the route didn't go beyond the freaking sticks... but could one of you tell me whether Moss was AT LEAST running when he caught the ball, meaning Todd hit him in stride?

Ugh. Oh well.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 16, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we can get the wind to get us a couple of points off a safety.

Posted by: dcsween | December 16, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

jm220, you hit the nail on the head: Todd is like a younger version of Brunell.

nate

first throw was really odd 2 yard cross with zero chance of getting to the end zone

second throw was a desperation heave to avoid a sack

not a good last set of downs, but since the gints didn't have to honor the run, finding the end zone was going to be tough

16-3 Skins

also why is there a head still attached to eli's body?

Posted by: dealer | December 16, 2007 10:35 PM | Report abuse

That Marcus/Blades/Fletch was only a couple of packages. They shifted into a 3-4 with K.Campbell in the middle on that last one with the sack.

Posted by: dcsween | December 16, 2007 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Sweet. This game so far puts Carter at 10.5 sack and 4 forced fumbles for the season. Who was the last Skin with a double digit sack total? Lavar, when Marvin Lewis was the DC, maybe?

Posted by: JustMe | December 16, 2007 10:36 PM | Report abuse

X, all in fun.

I extend the hand of enduring burgundy-and-gold friendship. This is a sweet, sweet evening. For one wee evening, all is swell in Redskins land.

Whodathunk it.

Ah, the giddiness of it all. . .

OK. New third quarter adjustment ... the Giants have figured out the draw. Stop doing it for a little while, esp. in SKins territory in what would be Giants redzone.

too conservative joe or al or whomever calls these f'in plays.....

Posted by: lurgee5177 | December 16, 2007 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Its not conservatism ... that's just Betts.

Posted by: dcsween | December 16, 2007 10:40 PM | Report abuse

um, this game is not nearly over.

skins still need to score. the worst thing that could happens is that they go into the run for 1-2 yards on 1st and 2nd and then get stuffed on 3rd and long

Posted by: farstriker | December 16, 2007 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Is there cause for concern? I mean, come on, what could go wrong? We're ahead!

By 12 points!

With fewer than 20 minutes to go! (Note the outstanding usage of "fewer" instead of the common but incorrect "less," Xster).

I mean, it's in the bag!!

This is Joe Gibbs we're talking about.

And Todd Collins!

And remember how we dominated them the first game, too! We own them!

---fantasy interlude---

With the remaining scoring possibilities in the semifinal round a mere formality, the championship game in the Redskins Insider 'Australia vs USA' fantasy league will pit SMACK against kost52.*

Top seed SMACK crushed wild card Stumped, while kost squeaked past Zebra thanks apparently to Jessica Simpson. (Zeeb's QB was Romo.)

kost and SMACK may represent Australia and the USA respectively, which nicely fits the theme of this league, but they are both of Dutch extraction, which counts for something, I think.

* He Nate Me was not invited to participate in the championship game.

One first down. One first down. One first down.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 16, 2007 11:23 PM | Report abuse

Okay, so here's the thing. The fact that they've now used one TO means that optimal strategy shifts, I believe. It's now more important to get a first than run clock.

Thus, weird as it sounds: time to pass on second AND third, if need be.

A first down wins the game.

So I could make a case that Collins' passing is feast or famine?

Famine for a decade, feast in the Bears game, famine in the first part of this game, feast in the middle of the game, famine thereafter? It's a troubling trend, but it does project to a feast at the beginning of the Vikes game.

Also, and we as a group would be remiss if NOBODY pointed this out: F Al Saunders if he adjusted his game plan one iota to favor Todd Collins and open things up, after keeping things simple and handcuffing Soup all season, when the whole point of the freakin' season was to give Soup a chance and see what the heck he could do!!!

...ENd mini-rant...

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 17, 2007 12:03 AM | Report abuse

Eagles are not a team that mails it in, as they proved today with spectacular defense against Dallas.

That being the case, I don't see the Saints beating Philly next week.

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 17, 2007 12:05 AM | Report abuse

Nate, I gotta check you. First, if you were not able to see, conditions for passing were impossible. Neither QB could get off. I am not talking the norm LBM stuff. the wind was crazy. Second, this is one of those times where our arrogance as fans in assuming we know better than men who have 30+ year careers assessing the situation. Even if they bracket back the offense for fear of Campbells limitations. I think we need to give benefit of the doubt and also see the losses this year where Jason just made some huge errors.

Posted by: csquaredskins | December 17, 2007 12:09 AM | Report abuse

Nate, obviously you did not see the game. We cannot judge Collins on this game...the wind was wicked....blowing 26 miles per hour and the ball was floating all over the place. Same thing happened to Eli....and his receivers also kept dropping passes.

By the way, how in the world can one live without a television???

Posted by: Lisa_R | December 17, 2007 12:11 AM | Report abuse

Nate, I don't blame Al if he simplified things for JC. From what I understand Brunell had not completely picked up the offense in his time in it. Todd has been in it for years.

A point I raised with Jasno during his chat was this: Collins's experience with the offense and in the league may make him the equal if not better QB running this offense than Campbell whose sole advantage is youth and mobility. It appears that Collins's reads are quicker and better than JC's.

You didn't see the game so I will tell you that the wind conditions had a lot to do with the passing and catching by both teams.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | December 17, 2007 12:13 AM | Report abuse

when the whole point of the freakin' season was to give Soup a chance and see what the heck he could do!!!

Also Nate, the above sentence must be the beer talking. The whole point of the season was to win ball games and make the playoffs. If they thought limiting Jason gave them the best chance to do that, so be it.

Posted by: csquaredskins | December 17, 2007 12:13 AM | Report abuse

I appreciate it, csquared, and you know I was mostly writing in jest up there.

I take it you are not in the camp of people who believe that Saunders has been calling a different game plan with Collins than he had with Campbell?

I'm just saying that from everything I've been able to observe (via whatever media have been available to me), through the filter of the arrogance I readily admit to having as a fan, I believe Saunders has actually given Collins a better chance of succeeding over 1.5 games than he gave Campbell over 12.5 games. I could be totally wrong!

And I was totally joking about the feast or famine thing. I should have split those into two posts. I know Elisha and Almighty Todd both had beaucoup trouble completing passes for most of the game. That's why the run of success for Todd was extra super impressive (hence my "feast" designation).

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 17, 2007 12:14 AM | Report abuse

I do appreciate you all stepping to me, and checking me, and like such as. It really does make me feel like part of the family, like the weird cousin out in Portland who doesn't have a teevee.

(We left our teevee in VA when we moved west. I know that sounds crazy. It was a good move, no doubt about it, a life-changing move, absolutely and unequivocally positive. The only time I miss it is during Redskin games. And since the new baby arrived I have not been able to get out of the house to find a teevee. But oh well.)

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 17, 2007 12:18 AM | Report abuse

Nate, if there is a difference in the way Saunders is calling the plays for Todd (and tonight with the wind, you could not tell anything), it most likely has to do with Gibbs wanting to bring Campbell along slowly. Since Gibbs really knows nothing about Todd, he probably told Saunders....he's your guy, you know him...have at it. Just a hunch.

Posted by: Lisa_R | December 17, 2007 12:19 AM | Report abuse

Gotcha my man. Nate, we park our cars in the same garage about this team. Thick til the end. But, I dont look at the QB situation the same. Little twist for ya. Here is your statement: I believe Saunders has actually given Collins a better chance of succeeding over 1.5 games than he gave Campbell over 12.5 games. I could be totally wrong! The way I look at that is because Todd reads it faster differently, knows it, etc. They are running what he is comfortable with. 10 years vs 1 yr, essentially. They have probably run a lot more with Campbell in practice but realized his shortcomings. This is Club 320 BTW.

Nate there's nothing wrong with not having an idiot box in your home dude. No need to explain that.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | December 17, 2007 12:20 AM | Report abuse

Nate,

I think the difference in tonight's game was the success of the running game. The Oline actually played well and opened up some nice holes, including the one to the right side that CP ran through to get into the end zone.

Watching this game, it pretty much had the same ebbs and flows as other Skins games from this season. The difference was the line was able to block well enough for our backs to get good yardage and to get into the end zone.

Believe me, Weird Al did no favors for Collins with any of the pass plays he called as you could almost hear the ball quacking on each one.

Posted by: JustMe | December 17, 2007 12:21 AM | Report abuse

But seriously, none of you thinks Saunders is calling plays differently for Collins than he did for Campbell? None of you?

I would be impressed if that were the case, because it would make me like and trust Saunders a lot more than I did after the Bears game, when all of a sudden the play calling magically transformed, and a rusty old dude who had spent a decade toting a clipboard after a completely undistinguished early "career" astoundingly looked better than a cannon-armed third-year player had looked. I mean, that was really, really weird. Really.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 17, 2007 12:22 AM | Report abuse

Okay, okay, okay (where oh where is SallieMae???)

So... can we run as well as we did tonight against the Vikings, on the plastic grass in their building?

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 17, 2007 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Nate I agree that the playcalling has changed. I just don't care. It's not like JC was tearing up with what he was given.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | December 17, 2007 12:24 AM | Report abuse

Club 320! Ah yes.

And I'm just making conversation.

It could also be that Collins is better at recognizing coverages and makes his reads before the snap thereby giving him the advantage of making quicker throws. So long as it keeps working I'm happy.

The Skins should be able to throw on the Vikes and on D force young Mr. Jackson into some errors.

Posted by: learnedhand1 | December 17, 2007 12:28 AM | Report abuse

Yes-sir, Yes-sir! Portis looked good. Betts looked good. Smoot played well. Santana running some good routes. Imagine if we had one more deep threat to take some heat off he and Cooley.

Tollins looked decent, mostly because the line blocked well (Heyer & Samuels played well, I have to say it) AND because he makes quick decisions. Great anticpation on the passes to Yoder and Sellars. He throws the split second the players come open, which allows them to catch the ball in space and run.

Rocky out, don't know his status. Not comfotable with Torrance. Doughty lucky on some contact stuff, ref's were lettin em play tonight. Alexander tuff on both lines, like that dude for some depth.

K. Campbell okay at backer, Blades ok. Marcus Washington...lots of mistakes, releases the TE with no contact, makes mistakes on reading screens, not the same player right now.

Great win. Phenomenal play by the offensive line and running backs, fantastic effort by the defense, and way beyond excellent play by those DBs, in particular. There were LOTS of calls that could have gone P-I, but it was apparent the refs weren't going to call any penalties on underthrown balls in that weather.

Tough luck on the Shockey injury. You never like to see a guy go down, and Shockey looks like he's in for a long, long recovery and rehab. Totally sucks.

Don't you love the NFL in December and January? All I asked for from the 'Skins this year was to get to 9-7 and make a run at the playoffs. Let's pray for good weather up in Minnesota :-)

Posted by: PDiddy | December 17, 2007 12:49 AM | Report abuse

nate, really collins played really well. as well as anyone could've. even my boy tom brady couldn't have played a better game. one sure TD pass to cooley was caught by the wind, and this game wouldn't have come to the end like that had cooley held on to a sure first down. but yeah he played really well.

one thing i couldn't figure out is why sheli kept throwing it up with that big trajectory? if the ball was over 10 ft. high the wind just grabbed it and smacked it down.

If Campbell had played this game the Skins would have lost. He would have turned the ball over twice in the second half.

I like Campbell alot, don't get me wrong, but his unforced turnovers have cost this team this year.

Well, the 'Skins may be 7-7, but it's too bad they don't have a front office like the Ravens. When you go to Ravens HQ, you just get a winning feeling. And the talent on that team is far superior to anyone else because they build through the draft and accumulate depth in case of injuries.

:-)

nate, gosh i don't want to sound like someone who knows anything but what the heck...the difference in "play calling" from JC to TC is that TC can read defenses and has a lot more options available to him than JC did. cuz i'm pretty sure the ability to memorize the whole playbook is the same but the ability to do with that knowledge is...

Posted by: PDiddy | December 17, 2007 1:06 AM | Report abuse

I wouldn't really call them "unforced turnovers" when they occur when we are behind late and Campbell is trying to force the ball downfield because we need to score quickly.

Posted by: PDiddy | December 17, 2007 1:16 AM | Report abuse

So Collins gives us a better chance to win than Campbell, and Saunders knew as much all along, and that's why the offense has looked so much better in the 1.5 games since Campbell was hurt. Okay.

... so who was it keeping Campbell at QB through all those games, and thereby actively preventing us from being as good a team as possible? Because that's the only logical conclusion that can be drawn from the evidence as framed above.

What was the point of this season, after all? Was it to develop Campbell, or to win as many games as possible, or what?

Ah, F it. Again, look where all this puts me, all this wondering at what's so freakin' different about Toddapalooza. It puts me here, in the role of Most Negative Person After a Win, which is stupid and merits a double smack in the back of the head.

Enough of this. Sorry. One last time for the night, with vigor: HAIL!

This was always going to be a 10-6 or 9-7 team at best. As far as I can tell, JC only lost the Cowboys and Bucs games. Moss and CP lost one. I think the playcalling lost that Giants game. St. Joe lost the Buffalo one. The team as a whole is mediocre and, in my opinion, poorly coached. Even the games JC "lost" were games that shouldn't have gone down to the wire anyhow.

All of that said: this is not any different than any other team in the NFC save the Packers and Cowboys.

It's wide open. Just get in the dance and make stuff happen.

That game was Toddally awesome. I get to see the skins so seldom that it was sweet to see them on primetime.

Nate, all I have to say is: "A Little You Goes A Long Way". I've been on that internet radio kick all year. I miss the golden silence of the old commercial breaks.

The Ron is I think channeling 21. That horizontal hit with the taunting penalty was classic Reaper. He's even playing that center field position.

I actually get to see the game next week here in balmy MN. AP is no joke. He's going to really challenge the skins D.

The last skins/vikes game I saw here, I think D.Green ended up saying that it was the worst game he ever played in. The skins got *stuffed*. This was a couple years ago.

Please anyone who said mean things about CP (except the fumbles) make apologies.

He is going to end up with 1300 yards behind this crap O line, young QB, and hurt for a few games.

Must explain about JC. He knew less early in the season so they gave him less. Opened up vs the Lions but then O line got hurt. Pulled back.

We opened things up a lot from the Dallas game. Set a club recored for pass atempts in 3 game span. Result - lots and lots of turnovers, out for 4 weeks, no wins in 4 games. Still following.

Giving him more plays and passing would have recked this season (see above). You go with what will give the team the best chance to win. Do you all understand.

JC will be good if he develops and stays healthy.

Wow, reading all of those comments is like re-watching the game on fast forward.

Man date went great. Really nice guy, very friendly family and friends, good food (mmm...wings), nice house, and lots of Skins memorabilia, including neat stuff like a Ricky Sanders game-worn glove. His sister used to work at Redskins Park, so he had connectionzz. I've already been invited back. We were the only two actual Skins fans there, but the non-Skins fans (Packers, Bears, Squawks) were still cool.

My $0.02 on a couple of things from the game:

1. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

2. Last week, TheRon's late hit was stupid on his part (even if it did send a message). Tonight, the taunting call was just ticky-tack. I can only imagine how Sam Huff must've reacted to the refs on that one. Still, TheRon is going to have to learn that he's a marked man in this league, and that refs are going to have itchy flagging hands when he's around.

3. How about all of those empty seats in the fourth quarter when the Jints were still very much in the game? That's embarrassing, and makes me even more confident in my prediction that the Jints will lose out, if their "fans" have that little confidence in them. I don't care how cold or windy it was.

4. Nate, good call on the Fat Tire. My beer of choice tonight was Snow Cap Ale from Pyramid.

5. Yes, Al is calling different plays for Todd, I think, but so be it. He knows the offense better. When Jason reaches that point, Al will call those plays for him, too.

6. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Bed time. Gonna sleep like a baby.

Hey, that game was a lot of fun to watch, even though it was hardly a watchable game. But give St. Joe a couple of extra days of prep time and I had a reasonable amount of confidence that they could find a way to win.
Now th Giants are missing most of their passing attack and facing a must-win game against the Bills; injuries finally caught up to the CowPies and suddenly they're not so unbeatable either.
So it's not like out path to the playoffs is assured, but it could be worse -- we could be a recently converted Giants fan.

Nate,

In answer to your 1:17 post, I completely understand your line of thinking because particularly during the Bears game, both of us commented that it appeared that Weird Al had called better plays for Collins to give him a better opportunity to "shine." The only thing that changed my mind about that game was that I listened to Doc Walker's radio show one day last week when he said JC had told him that the plays called in that game were already in the game plan. He told Doc that they had planned to go No Huddle for the entire second half, which obviously changed once Collins got in the game. JC said the only difference was that Todd's reads were different, not the plays, themselves. So, though we attributed the play calling to Collins being in the game, it seems that the coaches had already decided to do things a little differently for that particular game.

As for last night, I thought Collins did a good job of managing the game, but that he didn't offer much beyond that. As others noted, he did look like Brunell for much of the game. He didn't turn the ball over, but that was more due to luck that the DBs in the Giants' secondary can't catch any better than ours (Just a couple of examples off the top of my head -- On one pass play, the ball hit the DB directly in the hands and he couldn't hold onto it. On another, TC completed a pass to Moss, who was double covered. If the DB in front had been any good, that ball probably would have been picked.).

Collins certainly makes his reads faster, and that is to be expected, I think, because of the number of years he's had in the league and in this particular offense. But, he also takes sacks that Jason would not have. For all their vaunted pass rush, the Giants only got 2 sacks last night, and were it not for the fact that Collins moves in the pocket like he is standing in drying cement, they wouldn't have gotten those.

I think playing Campbell this season was a move toward preparing this team to be a winner for the future, but that the coaches also thought they could win games with him. You gain nothing for the future by wasting a season playing a 36 year old who has essentially been a career backup when your young QB could be learning how to play the game at a professional level. Plus, there was an assumption that Campbell would have a great line to play behind and a great running game to fall back on. Things just didn't work out that way.

I think Campbell has come along pretty well this season all things considered. I also think his injury, if it had to happen, couldn't have come at a better time. It seemed to me that it had really started to get into Campbell's head that he probably needed to try to force some things because at times earlier in the season, his "playmakers" on offense were not coming through. Plus, it couldn't have been doing much for his confidence that when some games were on the line, the coaches took the ball out of his hands and put it in the hands of backs who were struggling. Hopefully, he's getting the opportunity to clear his head of all of that. If he can, and he gets a firmer grasp on the offense so his reads are quicker, he'll come back ready to help this team really make some noise next season.

Sorry for the book, but I had to get everything out that I wanted to say in 1 post since I won't be able to post anymore messages once I get to work.

Should have mentioned this, but Andre Carter is having a GREAT year. 10.5 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and he NEVER comes out of the game either. If we can get another end to play opposite him, that will make Monty/Golston/Griff that much more effective.

I'm hoping that Rocky's knee is ok for the Minnesota game. Rushing yards in that game are going to be tough to come by for the Redskins.

Posted by: SmallPen15 | December 17, 2007 9:15 AM | Report abuse

I think the DL is (are?) playing fairly well. What they're missing is the blow-up game-changer that is like FedEx -- guaranteed delivery by five seconds. The Bills game was the poster child for this need -- with a rookie dropping back three times and having 5+ seconds each time; finally, there's a gap in the coverage and a punch in the gut.
I don't know whether Carter is getting doubled or not, and his effort is certainly there, but he can be taken out of the game when we need him to stop the 3rd/4th and long...

Posted by: daggar | December 17, 2007 9:21 AM | Report abuse

SmallPen, Fat Tire is easy to find out here in Portland, OR. We're on the same side of the Mississippi as New Belgium, so there aren't the same import fees you get when moving beer to the East Coast.

cL, you didn't include the kid Lorenzo whose name kept getting dropped up here, I guess he's super-versatile. You can't outversatile Lorenzo Alexander.

I guess it's not depth so much as... all the other crap that's gone wrong for us this season.

Playoff picture:

The Giants losing to the Pats in Week 17 is a GIVEN, so as far as I am concerned the Skins need the Saints to lose one (maybe against Philthy) OR the Giants to lose at Buffalo (very possible) and they control their own destiny. LETS GET IT DONE! BEAT THE VIKES!

The playcalling is definitely different now with Todd Collins. Jason might look 100 times better in this offense or 100 times worse, hard to say. He is certainly more talented than the Todd.

Also just because all this stuff is in the "gameplan" doesn't mean Saunders has any intention of calling it with Jason in there and the game close. They don't script the whole game.

can't argue with Caldera's reasoning - who knew I should be deciding on a beer based on the ability to construct model planes or pyramids with the container in which the beer came?

Back to the foosball - I love the way L2 has been playing recently. It appears his short time playing with Sean really helped him. While he has made two rookie mistakes in the last two games (I didn't mind the late hit against the Bears), he has been playing aggressively and instinctively.

I watched the game for as long as I could take it last night (waaaay tired) and went to bed with the score 22-10, yet fully expecting the Skins to win; Eli was throwing Nerfs out there, just floating around waiting to be intercepted or diving straight for the ground 10yds short.

I thought that my (current) namesake had a really good game. For those saying "he's just a good game manager" isn't that what all the best QBs do? Sure the elite guys have more weapons in their arsenal, but what they all have in common (even Favre is doing it this year) is that they manage the game well. Romo may be the only exception to that right now.

If you're done with him at season end, we'd take him!

jspaceman72, Todd Collins wife had a baby in Boston on Friday. Snyder flew him up there and back in his private plane.

Collins has gone from obscurity to challenges....he has to come in off the bench in the Bears game and win it for us to even have a chance at the playoffs....he then is named Offensive Player of the week....his wife goes into labor....he then has to start his first game in 10 years in the swirling winds at the Meadowlands where we never win and his first 7 passes were incomplete. But he managed the game and pulled out a win. Whew.

Little hungover this AM. Sorry for the BWI (blogging while intoxicated) during the game ... and thanks for not mocking me.

I'm still not ready to talk about offseason moves ... and may be second guessing my thoughts about bringing in a FA FS ... TheRon could be our new free safety ... or Doughty could be our new free safety ... or Grilliams could go back to the idea of interchangeable safeties (which never worked with Sean Taylor and Archuleta, but might be able to work with these two guys).
Rest assured, I will be mount my high horse with post-season suggestions if and when the post-season arrives.

That game last night was GREAT. I deny that it was the intoxicant taking over and deny that it was a boring game. It was a dream game -- grinding December ball, in its new incarnation, ToddCollinsBall (TCB, which is what they did).

I feel much better about depth,* esp. the upsteppage by Heyer, Doughty, Alexander, Wilson, and Torrence, not the mention, The Todd!

* I didn't include Blades in this list b/c I didn't need to feel "much better" about him. He had me at preseason.

The one post-season suggestion that I CAN make right now is that the Giants need a new QB. I can say with confidence that the multi-year LBM experiment is over and it has failed ... they can only look forward to predictable inconsistency and perpetual mediocrity. That said, I hope they keep him.

Natetradamus, the rookie Peterson is on par with Westbrook, i.e., among the toughest (though Westbrook has better hands). That said, young legs are susceptible to damage, esp. if the Chicago LBs show up tonight. Division rivals and you KNOW that the Bears are smarting from their record a year after going to the big (wet) game in Miami last year. Seems clear to me that one or more of those guys (esp. FA Briggs) is planning on playing with some abandon and pride tonight (at home) ... either pride or desire for a big contract with their next team.

Eli's wounded duck ball flight isn't going to get it done in wind. The Todd's tourniquet tight spiral, on the other hand, well...is a nice warm glass of got it done.

westbrook wasn't being classy he was being strategic....taking a knee killed the clock, if he scores dallas gets ball back...

I hate the eagles but loved the watching cowboys lose, especially since I was facing Romo in my fantasy playoff and he siht the bed!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i also heard that Jon Runyan told westbrook not to score and westbrook admitted he didnt asl to nicely.....

* RI Fantasy Post *

Now I remember why I hate fantasy football. My team has 95 points with the Vikings D to come tonight. There's a chance I would have beaten any of the guys through to the playoffs this week. Aaaaaargh!!! Now I'm rueing Vinatieri's miss against the Chargers which cost me a 1 point loss even more.

If fantasy can be this annoying, how bad would it be if you made your living at this stuff!?!

Toddcoat,

What a Sunday, indeed. I absolutely loved watching the Ravens lose in that fashion. There is nothing better than listening to Ravens fans bicker about Brian Billick. Oh, and congrats on that 1st win. I knew they'd get it.

On to the Skins, great win. If only we had held onto a few of those halftime leads earlier in the year...

I also want to throw something out there that will be a shock coming from me. Some of these guys the Skins have drafted late, or signed as UDFA after the draft, are really starting to pay dividends. Heyer, Anthony Montgomery, Alexander, Golston (from time to time), Doughty (last night). Maybe I've been too critical.

Now if they would just take the foot off the gas a little during free agency. But luckily, (or is it unlucky being in this position), the Skins aren't going to have much room to chase after potential big name free agent busts for a little while.

Let's go Bears, Eagles, Bills, and of course, the Skins. There would be nothing sweeter then having the final game of the year, at HOME against Dallas, mean something.

CL its simple math

Hatred for NFC opponents:

Cowboys > Eagles

I probably hate the Eagles the least because Westbrook is a beast and we did some serious player swapping over the past few years... that and I like a girl who is an Eagles fan. Ick.

New York has their D-Bag fans, Strahan, Pierce-a-dick Arnold, No Heart Manning and more D-Bag fans.

Hey RB. Am I right in thinking you didn;t go to Meadowlands because you thought you might jinx the Skins? If so, bravo as it worked and also you avoided having essential personal items freeze up and drop off!

The whole Billick/Ravens thing puzzles me. If the Ravens team that played the Patriots turned up every week they would take some beating but they've mostly been a no-show this year. And I'm sure glad they stayed away yesterday!

But who cares about them? Rejoice, Rejoice!!

And Todd.

cl (and others)

Surprised you are wondering about Westbrook's kneel down since a similar situation occurred in the last Skins/Iggles game

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/11/11/AR2007111100915.html

After learning that the Skins had let him waltz into the end zone to get the ball back, Westbrook gave credit to the Skins for that smart bit of coaching and admitted that in hindsight, it may have been better for him to have taken a knee just outside the end zone instead of scoring

To quote Mr Westbrook

The screen play gave the Eagles a 26-25 lead. Westbrook added one more score with 2:18 to play, a 10-yard run the Redskins admitted they purposely allowed so they could get the ball back with a chance to tie.

"That's exactly what they did. They allowed us to score," Westbrook said. "I wish I would have known that. I would have stopped at the 1. As an offensive player, any time you have an opportunity to get into the end zone, you get into the end zone."

Hey Adam congratulations, that was a good win yesterday. Does that put the whole McNabb thing to bed for another year or will it all come back up again in the offseason?

Posted by: toddcoat | December 17, 2007 12:03 PM | Report abuse

coat,

yeah, I am officially 1-6 at Skins away games (0-2 at Giants Stadium).

I would have fired Billick on the spot yesterday. How do you not go for it there? It's not like they're fighting for playoff position.

Oh, and how about Gibby saying that the doctors were ready to "take" Todd Collins' baby and that Todd left Friday to "take" the baby. Gibby also threw out a cessarian (sp?) section comment. TMI, Gibby, TMI.

I'm confused...there's Lisa and Lisa_R. Which one is the Lisa that has been here since the early, early days of the blog?

Re: "Mr." Snyder, his generosity with players has never been in question. His impetuous personnel decisions and attempt to bleed the fans dry has always been the issue. The former breeds a roster with no continuity or plan for success, the latter is just plain annoying.

One of the more satisfying moments of last night came with the booing of the Giants at the end of the first half. 9-4 and getting booed. What's not to love?

Have to agree on not going for it, they were having their way with us with the running game at that point. I can't see how Billick survives the end of the season RB, what a shame.... Ha ha ha ha ha!

I think the fans were booing to try to keep warm jspace. I thought Madden made a good point last night, he said something like "you have to be playing like a playoff team, not just be in the playoffs... ...and they are not playing like a playoff team".

I have been a skins fan for 47 years blah blah blah I gave up. I bleed burgandy blah blah I'm a quiter. I'll get you some dallas season tickets, they are doing well this year. The redskins spend more money on players and amenites than any other nfl team to draw in talant and they don't care??? what planet are you on. Jeff Lurie doesn't care as he sits 30 mil under the cap every year while his team has glaring needs. The skins push it and do everything they can every year. Maybe you feel like they don't care about you because you are a silly punk that feel slighted becuase your team only has 3 superbowls.

WAHHHH my team doesn't win every year WAHHHHH. You sound like a Philly fan. I'm gald you no longer like the team because when they win and your al back on the band wagon you will always remember when you turned your back.

Reality, you have never had any idea who I am.

Posted by: X_1967 | December 16, 2007 08:30 PM

Need to check your punctuation there 'X', That second paragraph is utter gibberish. How do you detect a tone of 'patent embarassment' in the blogging here? Embarrassment at what? And for whom?

The underlying (and often blatant) tone of superiority in your posts suggest that you are an adherent of the theories of Sir Francis Galton. Is that so?

I believe that all are welcome here, even those of us with some slightly crackpot ideas. Just leave the superiority and ad-hominem stuff back at the boys club.

I'll give Bugel a lot of credit for getting some decent production out of a two first stringers, a last-day-of-preseason trade, a guard who'd never played that position before, and a 3rd string undrafted free agent.
That said, this 'zone blocking' thing we do... when we've had success running it seems like we've had the same fivesome in there for a week or two; when someone goes down, it takes a week of poor oline play before they get it together. Is there something about zone blocking that makes cohesion so much more important than, say, talent?
Because I like Heyer, but undrafted free agent vs. Michael Strahan shouldn't even be close.

hey 'coat

Philly is such a fickle town that the Dump McNabb bandwagon starts back up if he opens up the Saints game with a string of incomplete passes or a pick 6. Barring re-injury or other odd end of season happenings with his health, I'd think it would be pretty stupid for DMac to not be the Eagles starting QB in 2008. AJ Feeley isn't a legit starting QB (heck, even you guys gave up on him :)) and I can't see Kevin Kolb being ready to step in next year.

However, I may be biased so here's John Clayton's take on things

Thanks Adam, it's nice to get the first one, but it also stops us getting sympathy support from other fans the rest of the way.

Although maybe we can resurrect that if we beat the Pats. I suggest we hire some large men to engage their main players in fisticuffs (NOT under Marquess of Queensberry rules, or course) before they get to the stadium, that's probably our best chance, yes.

Either that, or just have Cleo start crying every time they blitz, then maybe they will back off.
