Injury Report\Comcast\Odds and Ends

CB John Eubanks (infected toe) is out, as are Jason Campbell and Randy Thomas, obviously.

DT Cornelius Griffin returned to practice after missing one day with the flu and will play.

DE Phillip Daniels (knee), C Mike Pucillo (back) and WR James Thrash (ankle) are all probable and expected to play.

WR Antwaan Randle El was the last person on the practice field working with QB coach Bill Lazor. Randle El is the emergency QB with Campbell out and was working on fundamentals and handoffs. He was a college QB at Indiana ... Former Redskin great Gary Clark addressed the team after practice in a practice that has not been uncommon since Gibbs returned to coaching ... Gibbs said he does believe that the predicted heavy snowfall in New York this weekend will benefit either team ,,, With Eubanks out veteran David Macklin, inactive much of the season, looks to fill in at the fourth corner spot.

I'll be making my usual 5-6 pm appearance on "Washington Post Live" on Comcast Sportsnet this afternoon, so as always ridicule me and send along any e-mail taunts as well. Have a great weekend and enjoy the snow.
Cheers.

Posted by: LiberalMike | December 14, 2007 1:54 PM | Report abuse

Yo yo yo!
ARE isn't a bad guy to have as your emergency QB, in case anyone was worried about that. I'm a grad student at Indiana U, and when he was here he was a prolific QB-- he even came 4th in the Heisman race one year. We've seen him in the pros on trick plays, but I think he'd be more exciting to watch than Brunell.

Love youuuuuu.

Anything more on JLC being blown off by Eubanks? I'm thinking there's a good story there... did he elaborate at all?

Infected toe? Sounds like he needs to Todd Up.

Posted by: Dorf | December 14, 2007 1:59 PM | Report abuse

What we really need is another star WR added to the roster, we are running low on starting WR's to warm the bench.

Boo hoo. Strahan has his thong in a bundle over the wind whipping through his teeth on Sunday night. Good to see the Giants' (young) secondary are all from southern (no snow) schools. http://www.nj.com/giants/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-1/119761294354240.xml&coll=1

Is Landry still on special teams? Even if he isn't on the regular kick off team, they should put him in their if the Giants are receiving on the opening play. I remember in the preseason and the first few games, he had some jumping-off-a-truck-breaking-some-teeth hits on guys. Nothing better to take out the souls of the Giants and their fans ... and ignite the fires of mayhem.

Looks like the forecast for East Rutherford on Sunday is for rain during the day, cloudy at night, and less wind than before (forecast yesterday said 20 mph, but now it's down to 12 mph). So it looks like weather is going to be a non-factor, or at least less of a factor than previously thought/feared.

If things keep going this direction, by Sunday the game will actually be 72 and sunny, and in Hawaii.

Posted by: cmecyclist | December 15, 2007 2:24 PM | Report abuse

I've decided the Giants area team the Redskins should emulate talent wise.

Look at the offense skill positions.

Eli at QB (way better than JCan and always will be).
Shockey at TE- Way better talent than Colley could dream of being.
Brandon Jacobs(6-4, 265) and awesome, Derrick Ward (IR now but played great) and Reuben Droughns.

WR- Plaxico Buress, 10 times better than anybody on our team. Amani Toomer, David Tyree, Sinorice Moss, and Steve Smith (USC).

This is just the offense, I won't even start comparing defenses because I don't feel like being even more humiliated than I all ready am.

The Redskins can't pick players for sh#t and should embarrassed about it. But they are not. Just smug little prick Danny getting his daily hand job from Vinny (happy ending) Cerrato. Joe Gibbs falling in love with those washed up church goin' types.

Come to think of it, for all the dang Bible Study Friday nights these guys partake in, God ain't showing them much love.

I am about to give up my 40yrs of fandom for my ex-beloved Redskins and start cheering for a team that plays with heart....THE GIANTS

Posted by: X_1967 | December 15, 2007 2:25 PM | Report abuse

Geez, with an attitude like that, please go right ahead and cheer for the Jints. Go ahead.

Posted by: cmecyclist | December 15, 2007 2:37 PM | Report abuse

Dude what are you smoking? Jason will have a better career then Eli. Eli has been starting for awhile now and has shown that he is average.

Shockey way better then Cooley? Don't think so.

Derrick Ward is awesome? He's a good back but awesome is a stretch.

Burress is good, but 10 times better then Santana is also a stretch. Nothing special about any of their other receivers.

I think you're just bored and trying to stir something up on the blog.

If you really are considering switching to another team then you obviously aren't a real fan.

Posted by: farstriker | December 15, 2007 4:29 PM | Report abuse

Hey X_1967,
I don't think the Skins have any reason to emulate the Giants. What have the Giants won lately? Right now, there are 2 (maybe 3) teams in the NFL that are head and shoulders above the rest. The whole league is pretty mediocre, and the Skins fall in that middle crowd. Coaching and injuries (or tragedy) move those middle teams up and down.
The Skins have been in every game they played this year, except New England. Assorted errors (at the end of games in particular) have landed them firmly in mediocrity. Just a few minor breaks here and there, and the Skins and Giants (and Eagles for that matter) could easily switch places. Why emulate them?

Posted by: Alan4 | December 15, 2007 4:31 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, X_1967, just feeling frisky today! All in fun with numbers.

Posted by: farstriker | December 15, 2007 4:32 PM | Report abuse

X_1967, your comments about ME prove that you are an even bigger idiot than I thought. I weigh only 100 lbs (if even that)and would never touch Doritos or Pepsi. What an idiot you are!! Probably a 400 pound one.

As for stats...Cooley has been just as productive as Shockey (I'm betting if we compared Cooley his first few years to Shockey's first few years he would be even better) and does not go into a tirade when he loses or does not catch the ball.

Brandon Jacobs is ok....he's a big guy so hard to bring down but not elusive like Tiki was and is injured A LOT.

Plaxico is a very good receiver but other than that they have no "core shaking" receivers. Eli? I think he is about even steven in the TD/INT area.

Not to mention one major fact: If I'm not mistaken, even though the Giants are 9-4, they have only beaten teams with losing records. The difference being that they managed to win the close games and we did not.

Posted by: Lisa_R | December 15, 2007 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Just to briefly change the subject here. Say did you guys know this?

When a cell is translating a piece of mRNA into a protein, it stops when it reaches a three-nucleotide segment called a termination codon that causes the just-built protein chain to separate from the construction machinery.

So cool, eh?

Posted by: cmecyclist | December 15, 2007 4:46 PM | Report abuse

Oh, X, it's not much of a comparison -- Giants have made the playoffs in 2006 and 2007 (1), Redskins have not (2).
They have a decent defense because of their D-line, an offense that has maximized its talent, and a couple of good players; but the Super Bowl is a distant dream.
If you want to choose someone to emulate, there's another group another hour or so up the road that might be a better choice.

You'll be happy to know that 1) I am no longer panicking; I got that out of my system and 2) I purchased all the TP at my local grocery store and am presently selling it for $10 a package. I may be calm, but no one else here is.
The answer to Nate's question is that all the dudes will take the train to East Rutherford. We'll have the two Jasons, Boz and Wise and Steinberg on the scene. Maske -- I like to think of him as the Jim Cantore of our staff, only with snacks -- is the lucky man who gets to go to Foxborough.
Man, the NFL Network su--er, is really not good.

Bonjour, Charlie...I am going to watch this fubball game in the slim hope that sfskin will be in the stands with a greeting for the blog.

I forgot Steinbog! Silly me. (For what it's worth, I have come to appreciate and enjoy Steinbog AND Wise after very rough beginnings.)

O to be on that train! Seems like it would so much fun.

So, in a situation like that, does Boz deign to hang with the younger dudes and conversate with them, or does he kind of sit off by himself, gazing out the window and thinking deep sports thoughts?

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 15, 2007 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Hey, Nate! I'm glad to hear Bogboy and Wise are winning some Insider luv. They've done really good work this fall. BTW, I just checked the Peter Pan fares -- $69 roundtrip. Can't wait to see their faces when I tell them that's how they're going next year. Think of the last scene in "Midnight Cowboy"...Or don't.
Boz is just the best, one of the guys. He'll be mulling some numbers -- like his theory that everything evens out, seeks its own level -- and will have about 17 column ideas. He's great fun.

Ah, the pre-snow mad dash to the grocery store. A DC-area custom that I missed dearly when I left the area. Then I moved here to the Puget Sound region and was delighted to find that the people here are just as irrational in the run-up to an impending snowfall.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 15, 2007 8:16 PM | Report abuse

So it's people everywhere, other than Cleveland, Chicago and Vermont (the only places I can vouch for), who panic.

Wouldn't you think Gumbel could remember that Chad Johnson is No. 85? If only there were a catchy way to remember his number, say, by translating it into Spanish. That would make it easier for Gumbel.
Oooh, dinner's ready. It would be rude to blog while I dine.

Posted by: TheCindy | December 15, 2007 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Definitely, Cindy. I've also spent a good chunk of my life in Florida, and it's the same way there before a hurricane. Maybe that's a tiny bit different, though, because snow just means that you might have a hard time getting to the store for a couple of days, while a hurricane might (but probably won't) mean that the store won't be there anymore in a couple of days.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 15, 2007 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Redskins win by 4 points! They're going to surprise folks by pulling out a gutcheck win! Since their playoff hopes are dim and getting dimmer, just play the friggin' game. It's the Jints who have to look over their shoulder. No monkey on our back now. Just win, and then worry about next week on Wednesday.

Posted by: Soups1 | December 15, 2007 8:27 PM | Report abuse

I'm not watching the game, got things to do here in the home office, so I've got the game tracker up on another computer. Gumbel's back tonight, eh? So I guess there's no truth to the rumor that Collinsworth hired Jeff Gillooly to give the Nancy Kerrigan treatment to Bryant's vocal cords.

Bummer.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 15, 2007 8:28 PM | Report abuse

zilla, is that just a coincidence that you mention the Kerrigan hit, when one of the dudes involved died today (in PDX, I might add)? Not Gilooly, not the one who actually did the hitting, but the big fat one.

Sad.

That is sad Nate. It says he died of natural causes, which I guess makes sense to the extent that high fructose corn syrup is, in theory, natural in origin.

Here I was thinking the Gillool man was the whacker. Not only did the real guy have to do time, probably no one knew to give him credit (if you call it that) for his 15 minutes of fame (or infamy).

Anyone notice the picture of Al Saunders in the WaPo front page for the Skins? He's doing the finger tip touching thing, which I learned here means "huddle up" ... only he seems a little like Monty Burns ("eeeeexcellent, Smithers").

Posted by: dcsween | December 15, 2007 9:45 PM | Report abuse

Nate, pure coincidence. Weird.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 15, 2007 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the heads up on the article, celerysween. You're right, he does have a bit of a Mr. Burns look about him. "You there, fill her up with petroleum distillate. And re-vulcanize my tires, posthaste!"

Gibbs often has praised Saunders for his preparedness and work ethic and recently said he is pleased with the entire coaching staff, but acknowledged he has been disappointed in the results offensively, stirring speculation in the league that Saunders could be out in a coaching shakeup if the Redskins (6-7) fail to qualify for the playoffs.

To me, this is an immensely troubling paragraph, because I completely agree with Saunders when he says:

"I think we're really close to turning the corner to being a very, very good offensive football team in a lot of phases of the game. I really believe that."

If Al is let go, it would undo every bit of progress made over the last two years, put our offense into another new system, and it wouldn't solve any of our actual problems. Yet another reason to root hard for a playoff run: So that Al Saunders doesn't get sacrificed to the won-loss gods.

JR's article about Weird Al is interesting, but isn't it a bit disingenuous to imply that Weird Al may not be with the team next year when no internal sources (named or unnamed) could corroborate that line of thinking within the 'Skins organization? The only thing mentioned was conjecture by someone outside of the organization with no implied (or, at least, stated in the article) knowledge of the inner workings at Redskins Park.

Question for the hamsters who may still be up...should I go bar hopping this evening, or order pizza and stay inside? I did my birthday/holiday party last night and was fairly intoxicated...and then my ex showed up to celebrate (the party doubled as a fundraiser for the Humane Society in memory of my dog). Once she showed up, I got really drunk. Usually, a good bender has me up and at 'em at 8am at the latest. Today was a good 2pm start. God, I hate that woman :-)

So, it's a choice between Pizza, Discovery Channel, and random blog musings...or the bar, tequila, and wine.

I may be driven to go out to a bar. I'm watching a Food Network show with a bunch of insipid wine enthusiasts going on and on and on and on about pairing their wines with different kinds of food.

I love good wine as much as anyone, but these people who make love to their wines annoy the SJK out of me.

I'd stay in, Diddy. If you don't, you'll probably regret it come Monday.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I love dogs. That's a really cool idea for a party, though.

Yeah, I commented earlier today re: the weather tomorrow. Looks like it'll rain during the day but stop before game time, and not be as windy as predicted earlier.

I love snow games, but I love them more when it's not the Redskins playing in them with the playoffs on the line. :)

dcsween has jumped almost into dealer/chamique name change territory. lima bean, celerynut, limas sween... weird.

Diddy, happy belated birthday. I would suggest staying in tonight for moderation's sake (one on, one off) and because tomorrow night after the game you may find yourself with one of these two outstanding justifications for a heavy drink sesh: Skins lose, or Skins win.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 15, 2007 11:28 PM | Report abuse

Yeah Diddy, it was one of those TP tug o' war days up the Giant. And it's maybe raining a little. It's not going to be a weather game tomorrow.

But I must admit I used the weather to get out of a dreadful holiday party.

TiVo?

"may find yourself"

because, you know, the game could end in a tie (it's happened before between these two clubs), which would not be as good an excuse to drink.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 15, 2007 11:31 PM | Report abuse

I am cleaned out on TiVo (NOT watching "Grey's Anatomy"). All caught up. Staying at home all day does that to ya :-)

I just sent out the Bat Signal to see if anyone is out partying and all but one person came back with a negative. I don't remember much of it, but apparently everyone else was drunk as heck during the party last night. I think I'm going to do it...it's too hard for me to stay in when a whole city is out and about making inappropriate decisions after their respective holiday parties :-)

And, I thought "celerynut" was awesome. Haha. I think that's my favorite name on the blog.

Posted by: PDiddy | December 15, 2007 11:35 PM | Report abuse

That 7-7 tie game was probably the low point in the franchise. I say "probably", because I seem to remember a game when the J-E-T-S shut the 'Skins out 3-0. Ah, The Norv Era.

Watching hockey now. I'm definitely going out tonight :-)

Mine is easily Gus Frerotte spraining his neck against the FedEx Field wall.

Posted by: PDiddy | December 15, 2007 11:38 PM | Report abuse

The Norv Era for me is just a loop of his queasy grimaces from the sidelines, and his weak, gravelly voice saying over and over and over again "we just needed someone to make a play" in postgame pressers.

It doesn't matter what games those events happened during and after, they occurred with such numbing regularity over those seven dismal seasons that they all become one.

Best thing about Vikings playing Bears on Monday night? We'll know who to root for.

If we don't TCB tomorrow night, then go Bears. 'Course, if we don't beat the Jints, then the odds get way long.

My gut says that if we win out, NY misses the playoffs entirely. I don't think they'll beat Buffalo in Buffalo, and they haven't got a prayer vs. NE. If the Vikes win 2 out of 3, they tie NY's record and beat them with the head-to-head.

Then what we do, see, is we rig up the jumbotron in Time's Square so that it just shows Eli mouthing "F*CK!" on a continuous loop all night after the loss to the Pats.

It's just crazy enough to work. Or something. I'm going to bed.
