Injury Update

Fox, Daniels and Prioleau did not take part in full practice activities.
Portis was rested in certain segments as well, but, after what he did Sunday, can't blame them for that.

other than that it's all good. Gibbs said Fox, Daniels and Prioleau are all day to day at this point.

Was B Lloyd letting passes get picked off at practice?

Repost from last thread:

I say if Pats make it to the playoffs and have home field take it away. They don't get to play one stinkin game at Foxboro in the post season.
Also take draft picks which leads to my question.

If a team get's it's picks taken are they just left empty? Or does everyone else just move up in the draft?

I was wondering the exact same thing sfskin.

There would be 31 first round picks. Theoretically everyone moves up one. But no one moves into their space per se.

Just got to read through Jasno's webchat. Can someone fill me in on what Heyer did? Did he bang one of the personnel execs wives or something. Blew off JLC on an interview? I don't think he should start over Wade but think he has fared well enough to not classify it as moronic or insane or whatever. Jeez, give the undrafted kid a little props for playing tough.

I feel like taking picks from Pats is nothing. Everyone knows they're so good at scounting that they don't need picks. They make silk purses out of sows ears; wide receivers out of Brandon Lloyds.

So, what to do?

1. Make them play with their shoelaces tied together for the first quarter of each game.

2. Put melatonin in their Gator Aid.

3. Make Belichick coach in a tutu during the second half of each game.

4. Change their schedule and don't tell them who their opponent will be until warmups.

5. Make their cheerleaders work naked, especially in the snow.

6. Switch their fan base and make them play before the claque from ExtremeSkins and the Marc Fisher blog.

Choose any three from the above. Okay, choose number 5 and any two others.

TE,
Seems reasonable to me.
Number 5, as much as I like it, is just an incentive to break the rules though. All the teams would be taping then...and not just the signs.

I 2nd that motion. Heyer ran people over and they were running right behind him in OT. Those execs must be playing him on that issue....

Posted by: 4th | September 13, 2007 4:31 PM | Report abuse

Hey guys Jason can't watch the practices. You could check out the practice cam on redskins.com

In Jason's chat I think he sounds pretty close to what I have been thinking. Strong defense, offense plays catch-up continue to develop JC. Conservative approach to offense. Defense more gambling to get turnovers. Vastly improved special teams and kicking game. More youth and speed.

JLa, again, look at Gibb's record. How many teams have recorded the kind of blow-outs in superbowls that he has? This is not an "arch conservative" coach. You are seeing it right. The QB is still too "fresh" to unleash the hounds. You have to play it close to the vest until he gets comfortable.

That said, again, expect to seem some razzle dazzle on special teams on Monday night. Expect some attempt to go vertical early against the eagles to get some quick scores. Then the game will boil down to the 'Skins O-line getting it done with the running game in the 4th while the "D" holds McNabb. That has to be their strategy until Jason Campbell gets comfortable with the offense, reading defenses, and finally gets into those famous "zones" quarterbacks like to talk about.

Just kidding about the depth chart btw ... ;)

If Jasno's sources have not backed off from their opinion that Heyer is not at all ready to play, he needs new sources. Wade is better, no question. But Heyer clearly can play and whoever these execs are don't know as much about what it takes to play tackle as Joe Bugel.

Posted by: Mike H. | September 13, 2007 4:53 PM | Report abuse

What difference does it make whether they leave the pick empty or everyone moves up? If you're #4 in the checkout line at the Safeway, and #3 leaves, either you're #3 or you're #4 and it takes zero time to serve #3. Either way, they serve you at exactly the same time.

My understanding is that Peyton has signed an all-encompassing deal with Sony. You saw him doing the joint commercial with Sony and Sears. The bigger question is will Belichick team up with Peyton for the commercial. Sounds like whatever money he loses from a suspension could be more than made up for with sponsorships...

In the meantime, Peyton is probably inking a deal with Domino's as I write this so as to diminish my Oreo Pizza experience even further.

Damn you Peyton!

I think Belli should have to coach blindfolded. He can put one of those stupid headbands over his eyes.

And take away home field in the post season.

And take away draft picks.

And they never get opening kickoff all season long.

And if it turns out they've been doing this for years then each team they've played gets to send one player to the Pats in a trade for a Pats player. Have we played them? Can we send them the Receiver?

After knee surgery, Cowboys' Glenn hopes to return this season
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press

IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee for the second time in six weeks Thursday.

Glenn reinjured his knee last week when he tried to return to practice for the first time since the initial surgery Aug. 1 to remove a cyst. That was a week into training camp.

"This gives Terry a chance to play this season," Cowboys spokesman Rich Dalrymple said. "He will do everything he can to get on the field this year."

Still, the team said there is no timetable for Glenn's return.

Do you guys think that Brady was unware of the stealing of signals? Sort of like he was being fed adjustments but unaware of the subterfuge? Or was Brady in on the cheating, and was an active participant?

My opinion of the Golden Boy has really dropped in the last few days.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 13, 2007 5:38 PM | Report abuse

SCSkinsFan,

First let me begin by saying that I am a fan of Mr. Brady. This is partly because I can't stand BBM and his "I am a wholesome nice guy routine".

However, I wondered the samething as you. Actually, I went further--is he really that good or did the adjustments from the stealing of the signals made it easier for him to throw. I hold judgement at a later time. I want to see his performance in the next few years to see if there is a signifcant drop.

Hopefully, they exercised some "need-to-know" policy in NE. And that he is legit by winning a couple more (hopefully over those who were white and blue and their choke-a-lot QB).

There wasn't anything sketchy about what Brady did in my mind.

I must be alone in this, but I don't find the Pats videotape shabingus to be the most egregious example of cheating I've heard in my life.... HGH and steriods have a much greater impact IMHO, and are dangerous to the player and the other players as well (except for Sean Taylor's opponents -- they were doomed anyway).
I'm not arguing that the Pats didn't violate the rules -- if it says no videotaping, then that's a violation. Period.
But does the rulebook say "no stealing the other team's signals"? Because everyone seems to do that, and if that's the case, then the distinction between having someone tape the signals for analysis and that same person just standing on the sideline reading and relaying his info in real time isn't exactly the difference between involuntary manslaughter and murder one, now is it?
So, there should be a punishment -- they violated the rules -- but it's not like we've caught the one felon in our midst.

I like the penalty, I think it sends a good, tough message.

Cload, I know what you mean, but the problem with it, is we don't know the extent of the taping, they might have done it every game since Belichick has been coach.

I think the reason for the uproar is for the potential to bring the game into disrepute. By doing this, the NFL is making darn sure it doesn't escalate.

When you're playing poker, there's nothing wrong with reading someone's body language to try and work out and opponents hand, but it's very wrong to use a video to see someone's hand.

The other aspect is the timing. This comes while they're cracking down hard on the players and they couldn't be seen going easy on the coaches, owners, and organizations.

My question is how badly this tarnishes Belichick's image. Will people ever take him seriously again, or will they just forget about it in, say six months? I think it all depends on whether he keeps winning, and I wouldn't bet against that.

SMACK - I enjoyed the caption game, that was fun!

One of the things that I'm absolutely hating about the EPL League, is that it's so much of a guessing game. The Poms are just behind in this area. I mean you can go to the official team sites, and only 1 or 2 of them have anything that even resembles an injury list. Let alone some sort of 'named' squad a day or two before a game!

Posted by: kost52 | September 13, 2007 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Being skeptical myself, I'm thinking that a lot of teams are doing this in some capacity. Belichick can't be the only creep.

Only Miss South Carolina gave the US Americans speech, but that doesn't make the other contestants any smarter.

Logic not my strong suit.

Posted by: SMACK | September 13, 2007 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I don't think he would be the only one, but he will be now! I don't think anyone will be taking that kind of risk!

In 2002 here, one of the Aussie Rules teams were found to have been paying some of their players cash under the table, and therefore breaching the salary cap. They were fined $980,000 and stripped of two years worth of 1st & 2nd round picks. Hurt them big time, since then, they have finished 16th,15th,11th,16th,16th, & 15th in a 16 team competition.

Ale-Aided Logic is my forte.

If the pats had bugged the opposing team's locker room, or sidelines, that'd be equivalent to videotaping their cards. To me, this is just videotaping their body language to develop a database of patterns.
The fact that the casino tells you that you can't bring a camera to the table is important -- much like the donut-eaters telling me I can't go faster than 55MPH -- but doesn't exactly change the speed of my car.

You gotta admit, Roger Goodell is a pretty no-nonsense guy. I only hope his (correct) aversion to on-field technology doesn't extend to off-field features for fans. I'd love to see more replays in stadiums to bring the stadium experience on-par with the in-home experience, the ability to subscribe to a 1-play-delay coach-to-QB microphone (just like NASCAR has today), the ability to watch any NFL game from anywhere (though, admittedly, DirecTV apparently has this now for existing subscribers), and lots more.

My brother lives in Adelaide. I wanted to get one of his mates to surprise him on his birthday with four different cases of beer, which should last him a week or two. Now if I wanted to pick out something special for him, what should it be? I think his beer of choice is Coopers.

"Cowboys displace Redskins as NFL's most valuable franchise in Forbes rankings "

05:47 PM CDT on Thursday, September 13, 2007
Associated Press

NEW YORK - The Cowboys wrested the title of the NFL's most valuable franchise from the rival Redskins, knocking Washington off the top of the list for the first time in eight years, according to Forbes magazine's annual survey.

Thanks to a new $1 billion stadium set to open in 2009, the Cowboys' value increased by 28 percent - by far the largest jump among NFL teams this year - to $1.5 billion. They climbed from third to first in the rankings, leapfrogging the Redskins ($1.467 billion) and the New England Patriots ($1.199 billion).

The new stadium added about $350 million to the Cowboys' value. Jerry Jones can now boast that he owns the world's most valuable sports franchise, according to Forbes.

The Houston Texans and the Philadelphia Eagles again round out the top five and remain the only other franchises worth more than $1 billion.

Both New York teams also enjoyed big jumps in the rankings because of a planned stadium. The Giants moved from 15th to eighth with a 9 percent increase to $974 million. The Jets went from 19th to 10th with a 10 percent improvement to $967 million.

Their jointly owned, $1.3 billion facility is scheduled to open in 2010. The stadium added about $50 million to each franchise's value. That number is smaller than the Cowboys' because the venue isn't as far along. Forbes expects that the two teams' rankings will continue to climb as the stadium nears completion.

The Cleveland Browns were the only franchise whose value decreased. They rank ninth at $969 million, down from $970 million

Beez Neez
Razorback Red Ale
Little Creatures Pale Ale
James Squire Pilsner
Red Duck Pale Ale
Beechworth Australian Ale
Bright Hellfire Amber Ale
James Squire Golden Ale

I guess the problem is that everyone has different tastes.

Here's the thing about the videotaping. I agree drugs etc. are far more dangerous and egregious in terms of cheating. (Although please who are we kidding that these linemen aren't popping something?)

What gets me so annoyed by this is once again how petty and middle school student council it is. You're videotaping the other team to learn signals? Really? What are you 12? And it's all so fake me out craptastic 007.

It's like the super market (bear with me I'm tired so my analogy power is low). You get a cart in the super market and put stuff in it and you walk away to get more stuff and leave the cart behind on the understanding that no one is going to take your cart. It's bad form. It's like when people flip you the bird when you're driving. Why is that necessary? Do you feel like the big man now? You're just a deuche. It's like somebody posting under your handle on the blog. Why do it? So cheap. So lame. So blech.
Also apparently this isn't the only thing they do. Read Z's article in SI. Apparently they do cheap stunts like let the headsets "break down" on the sidelines in the middle of crucial drives for both teams.
Blech blech blech ppppphhhhpppptttt

Posted by: Bill Belichick | September 13, 2007 10:34 PM | Report abuse

I'm with Cload on this one, I don't see the Pats thing as that big of a deal. I'm sure all teams steal signals every once in a while. And if you suspect an opponent of stealing signals during a season, what would you do? Change signals, that's right. Much like a catcher who flashes 3-4 signals to a pitcher during an at-bat, and the pitcher knows which is the one he is actually calling.

This thing has gotten media pitbill approach written all over it. The articles about the Eagles and the SB loss was no surprised, clearly engineered by media ...

Kost, I like the McLaren news as a parallel. They admitted they had the information but state they categorically demonstrated through documents it was not used to gain an advantage. Don't quite think Belicheck is going down that path is he? Heavy penalty though ...

Belichik makes over 4.5 mil a year. 500k = whoopee!! He still makes 4 mil a year. They also have 2 first round picks next year. 1 from San Fran which means they get to keep the higher pick because you know SF won't have a better record. This punishment is BS IMO.

thank you kostco!

okay here's my take on this video taping...and it has changed since reading the dr. z article

charlie weis telling monte kiffin after the game "we knew all your signals and we still couldn't do anything". tells me that it wasn't really that big of a secret.

another instance that proves that fact is that when they were playing the lions *NFL* KNEW as lions pointed correctly that there was a dude pointing a camera at their defensive people.

the reason THIS is a big deal is because it is New Yoke! you do NOT mess with new Yoke!

the funny thing about this is that Eric Mangini KNEW about it so he was sending in 3 signals just like in baseball! so the game that they got caught in is the game they probly would've gotten nothing from mangini when the jets went to foxboro.

NOW this radio shabingus. now THAT should be penalized.

how come archie's boy hasn't said anything about it yet?

Philly is a team that has joined us in the great muddle in the middle, which means we have a chance, but I find it hard not to give them the home-field advantage nod.
So a victory for the skins will be to keep it close, have a chance to win late, and let St. Joe pull something out of his hat -- win a coaching matchup.

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 13, 2007 11:14 PM | Report abuse

But like all of these games, there's always the chance that it gets away from us -- we get down by a couple of scores, force JC to win the game (rather than manage the game), and wind up losing big. But even if that happens, it doesn't mean the season is over. It means that there are things this offense can't do yet.

We're down by 7 and this is 3rd and 20 on the 40 yrd line with 30 seconds left to go. Just because our best receiver is down we cannot give up. Pull it together people. It's time for the 2nd and 3rd stringers to step up and earn themselves a starting job while our best man is down. Our staff will do the best it can do get him back in the meantime.

WE ARE....REDSKINS INSIDER!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous | September 13, 2007 11:26 PM | Report abuse

Okay, bigfish, I'll give it the RI push.

And, fortunately, I've turned up a scrap of manuscript with another passage from the book of Jason. It appears to be the song of a bard, telling of a long-ago battle with carrion birds, in their lair to the north.

Perhaps some ancient history of our noble city and its warriors? I'm not sure. . .

============================

And there, before the lair, Jalac the bard stepped forth, and sang:

"O people,
I sing a lamentation, and a warning:
O people,
remember this place and its sufferings!
Forget not the terrible battle of the shrouds,
Long ago but still painful in our hearts,
In which many good men fell, warriors in rows,
Shrouded for protection against desecration, against the foul air.
Yet to no avail, for the carrion birds,
Shrieking,
Driven by a wizened goblin lashing a leathern whip,
Circled over the bodies, pulling away the shrouds,
Disheartening our living men.
So was it in this very place, that dark fight long ago.
Take care this evening!"

=========================

Intriguing, to say the least. One wonders if it is a work of imagination, or if it perhaps is based on real events.

I'll do some more exploration.

There are a lot of ancient manuscripts in their to be uncovered. We'll see what turns up by Tuesday. . . .

Here is where the "The Receiver doesn't dress week" pool stands. There are so many possibile reasons for 'the receiver' not to dres but the most likely are:
(in no particular order)

- shin splints

- banned substances
- kidnapped by Bill Belicheck for a Tom Friend article

This quiz is for 6th grade LD students... we're working on the Scientific Method and associated vocab.

I was thinking more along the lines of:
1.) Predict the score of Monday night's game against the Eagles.
2.) What was the result of last Sunday's game against the Dolphins?
3.) Explain a Cover-2 defense.
4.) Describe how you would observe the Monday Night Football game using your 5 senses.
5.) Form a hypothesis on why Sean Springs saw limited playing time against the Dolphins.
6.) Using an "if/than" statement, describe how the Redskins should best approach their offense.

Starting to feel nervous about the iggles. Their defense was fierce last week and they only lose because they don't have a punt returner. Don't know if they fixed that. They always seems to get a defensive touchdown against us as well. We need JC to step up big time and manage the game. One other thing, the pack only got 46 yards on the ground on 17 carries against them.

Makes you wonder how a Hall of Fame coach, like Gibbs, can figure this stuff out better than an omniscent beat reporter from the Washington Post, doesn't it?

From Jasno's article today-

"Any move that's made is for the betterment of the team," Lloyd said of Caldwell's arrival. As to his productivity, Lloyd said, "I can only put up production with the opportunities given to me, that's it." When asked if he had a desire to ask that more passes be thrown his way, Lloyd said no. He also said he required no clarification as to how the signing may affect his role. "I'm an established guy, too," he said.

My feeling, also, is that Jason and Cindy, who own this thing, need to put a stop to impersonNATErs. The "rules of the blog" posted above this say that they will remove that trash, but neither of them enforces the rules.

And, to my mind, what happened to Nate wasn't as bad as that guy who was going after Lisa with all the sexual crap. That amounted to cyber-stalking and it looked like the opening scene in a creepy slasher movie.

Someone posted above about how the Pats got the hammer, but I respectfully disagree. As far as the money goes, thats not that big a deal for either the Pats as a team, nor for Bill as a person, all things considered.

As far as the team punishment, it wont be realized until next April, and while it might suck to lose a first round pick, how are they being punished right now? They're not.

John Clayton, Peter King, Don Banks, while I usually don't agree with these guys, all came out in agreement in different written pieces, that the pats got off easy.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | September 14, 2007 9:35 AM | Report abuse

Greg,

Wilbon also says that Pats and the coach got off easy. A bigger fine for the team and a several game suspension for the coach might be more in keeping with what the new comish has done to players.

Here's how you punish the Patriots...they must carry the following players under their cap...

1) Brandon Lloyd
2) Rod Gardner
3) Mark Brunell
4) Ade Jimoh
5) Kenny Watson
6) Warrick Holdman

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Great Post: Do you mind? I think a few others could be added to the list.
1) Taylor Jacobs [did this guy ever get open in a big game?]

2) Adam Archuleta [speaking of B Lloyd and stealing $$]

3) John Hall [never healthy, and taking a roster spot]

Ray,

That's taking it too far. I know some people in Boston and I wouldn't wish that on them.

From Pete Prisco posted today. How do you call yourself a journalist and not know that a dude isn't even starting.

Offensive line hits

The loss of Washington Redskins offensive tackle Jon Jansen for the season with a broken ankle is a damaging blow for the Washington offense. Jansen is a quality player who doesn't often need help. Now that rookie Stephen Hayer will be in the lineup, it will mean the Redskins will need to chip more or keep a tight end in to help him in pass protection. That will limit what the Redskins can do in terms of offense. Not only that, but Jansen was a good run blocker.

If all you regulars stop posting you let the E- "turerists" win.

Only by posting and bombing other countries do we promote peace and beat these "turerists".

"... As far as the team punishment, it wont be realized until next April, and while it might suck to lose a first round pick, how are they being punished right now? They're not. ..."

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | September 14, 2007 09:35 AM

Though I agree they got off light, I think the HARSHEST part of the punishment is ... they can't use cameras any more! Skins chalk up a W in Foxboro (assuming they bring their own headsets)!

That shiny new Cowboys stadium is gonna look great with double the empty seats.

It's 100,000 person capacity will only be for 'special events' like the Super Bowl. It's regular season capacity will be 80,000 which is well short of the Redskins 92,000.

Dallas opened at home, on Sunday night, vs a division rival and still finished #12 out of 16 teams in % of stadium filled. That's a joke.

Skins brought the largest crowd last weekend and finished #2 behind Green Bay in % of stadium filled. Still haven't quite figured out how the Skins and Packers consistently fill 110% of their stadium.

Talk about your moving targets ... and how our little corner of the intergoogles doesn't always get it right. First, peeps here hating on Smoot, then after careful analysis by postgameheroes.com explaining WHY Smoot actually had an awesome game, and special props from Matt Bowen, peeps back off Smoot and notice that HE was the #1 CB. Second, the Springs drama unfolds. Conspiratorial archibingual rumors abound. Murmurs by St. Joe about maybe Springs being hurt, trainers narking him out. Doghousal conspiracy rumors re-surface. THEN the narrative changes to be one about throwing off the opposing CB with THREE different possible starters with super secret plans. Note that Smoot says today he is the #3 guy against McNabb ... is he mis-directing by saying this, or is he accidentally being Smoot and going off message? [Anybody here who does NOT want Rogers to be the nickel?]

Anyway, love Smoot's name for Suisham ... Shazam!

if the skins said they filled 110% of the stadium, why was there empty seats in the upper decks--lots, the whole 2 rows in front of me were vacant, I guess this means that a lot of season ticket holders dont go to the games---which means they should sell those tickets to real fans

Posted by: connskins | September 14, 2007 10:30 AM | Report abuse

said opposing CB, meant opposing QB

Posted by: dcsween | September 14, 2007 10:30 AM | Report abuse

I alwayse feel that the Skins need to change the tickit plans and leave big parts of the upper deck for single game tickits for just this reason. They would sell out every game and they would make more money. They don't get money from people that don't show with regards to the food and beer.

Posted by: 35332 | September 14, 2007 10:36 AM | Report abuse

I wonder if they don't count "premium seating" in those attendance stats...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 14, 2007 10:37 AM | Report abuse

35332, agreed and this would allow season ticket holders in the upper deck to move down and get rid of the corporate people who don't show up also

Oh and on the Pat's hit for being lieing cheeting pieces of NEDirt, the NFL cannot give a heavyer fine then the one they gave (aparantly). I think thats something they need to look at changing rulewise. Everything should be on the table with regards to penelties for cheeting. Including, firing of HC, AC, forced release of players, team forfits every game, ect. No tolerence for cheeting

From ESPN article:

If the Patriots lose their first-rounder next season they still will have a first-round pick, obtained from San Francisco in the deal that brought Moss from Oakland.

Moss and a first round pick unreal.

The Pat's fine should be comparable to this.

So I'm a bit concerned about this cover 3 against Brian Westbrook. I'm afraid he's going to eat us up.

Someone tell me I'm just being paranoid. Preferably Nate, Did, 4th, RB, AMTTS, Gov, TE, or any other regular that isn't posting.

Posted by: Skinz | September 14, 2007 11:01 AM | Report abuse

Skinz,

With the speed the 'Skins have at LB, shouldn't be a problem to contain Westbrook.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 14, 2007 11:08 AM | Report abuse

Westbrook has to be contained, he can change the game.

sween, thass what i'm talkin about! and can you imagine if bellichoke tried to mess with gibbs? cuz so far only the lowly lions and vikings have complained about their headsets not working. and it took the lowly jets to get them caught.

so how come bellichoke doesn't use this technique with the big boys like the colts?

hmmm i think i answered my own question as i wrote that.

tony dungy and monte kiffin (tampa bay connection) know that they steal signals so they prepare for it.

i really don't think the whole video taping thing is a big deal but the communication breakdown between the booth and the field is but unfortunately you can't prove that. but that is not good sportsmanship. actually that is plain illegal.

yeah i agree with greg de boston that if the commish wanted to come down hard he should've suspended bellichoke for 4 games.

if i was a D coordinator there's no way i send hand signals. if i do i encrypt them. that is just being lazy to send just one good signal.
