Springs Out; Taylor May Play (Updated)

Just got some short but important emails from JLC:

1. Shawn Springs -- who was listed as probable with a calf injury -- is out tonight, a team source says. This news means rookie cornerback-kick returner Justin Tryon is virtually certain to play tonight, after a very rough preseason.

2. There are indications Jason Taylor (questionable -- knee, of course) could play, albeit in a limited role.

3. Rookies Malcolm Kelly and Fred Davis will not play tonight.

4. Rookie quarterback Colt Brennan will be third string, behind Jason Campbell and Todd Collins.

Springs should havce been cut, he's hurt way to much and he just turned 40 we wil loose tonight b/c of springs

Giants just gave Plaxico a five year $35 million contract. He'll probably be out celebrating, skipping the game tonight.

Guy's earned it. Steelers gave up on him way too soon.

-------------------------------------------

ESPN says that the home team has won the last five Thursday night season openers. Surely that streak can't go to six, can it?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 4, 2008 4:36 PM | Report abuse

This really blows... Spring is our top corner.. Now we have to have to Carlos Rogers coming off major surgery and isnt very good cover Plaxico Burress. Plus we need Taylor in there to get pressure on Eli Manning. Our secondary is going to be really hurting tonight, I wonder how effective Landry will be with his hamstring as well.

Posted by: Jeremy | September 4, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

soooo, how many TD's will Tryon give up 2 night?

Posted by: Long Dong John | September 4, 2008 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Shawn Springs is 33, not 40. And if Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot can't guard anyone, then we deserve to lose anyway because of poor player selection. I think we'll do fine at corner, though a healthy Springs is nice to have around.

Posted by: olav | September 4, 2008 4:38 PM | Report abuse

How the SJK do you go from Probable to Out? There are some shenanigans going on here...

The sky is falling!

Posted by: stumped | September 4, 2008 4:39 PM | Report abuse

is it just me, or has tryon really taken the place of ade jimoh as the touchdown machine for every redskins opponent? seriously, any time i see him on the field i get upset. he is really just a poor excuse for a football player.

Posted by: pissed | September 4, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Darn it! Very disappointing news about my man Springs!

Adam Schefter just said Zorn just told him he thinks Jason Taylor will play tonight. Personally, even though I want him to play, I think he should sit this one out.

Posted by: Lisa | September 4, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Springs is a shutdown corner when healthy, and far better then an unproven Rogers and overrated Smoot.

Posted by: Jeremy | September 4, 2008 4:40 PM | Report abuse

I really hope Springs plays. Our secondary REALLY needs him in there. Could be bad without him. He's way more important than Taylor is.....

Posted by: dlhaze | September 4, 2008 4:41 PM | Report abuse

How can you say we should cut Springs, then say we will lose becuase he is not going to play?

Posted by: ryan | September 4, 2008 4:42 PM | Report abuse

I already have this sinking feeling before the game has even started. F***.. Lets hope Rogers, Smoot and the rest of our secondary along with Demetric Evans (Taylor's replacement) can step it up. Campbell is going to have play lights out tonight for us to win.

Posted by: Jeremy | September 4, 2008 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Springs has really wussed out on this one. NFL opener and he got kicked two days ago. Springs...take a shot like the real men in the 60's, 70's and 80's!

Posted by: TLusby | September 4, 2008 4:44 PM | Report abuse

I totally agree about Tryon, that guy has been nothing but a joke so far and with Springs being out he moves into our number 4 corner. Atleast Ade Jimoh was a pretty decent special teams player. Tryon is only a rookie so hopefully he will tremendously improve over time.

Posted by: Jeremy | September 4, 2008 4:45 PM | Report abuse

maybe tryon will grow a foot or something, but so far he has proven himself to be at best a middling athlete, playing a position at which he is very undersized. you have to be an absolute freak to play the position at his size (Darrell Green for instance?) and Tryon simply is not. In my mind he is the worst player on this team, and if I were the Giants I would be targeting him on every key down.

Posted by: griff | September 4, 2008 4:48 PM | Report abuse

The Springs/Tryon thing hurts. One is good the other really bad. Gonna get picked on all night.

"Springs should havce been cut, he's hurt way to much and he just turned 40 we wil loose tonight b/c of springs

so we're losing tonight because he isn't playing, and you want to cut him so he'll never play the rest of the year. Great idea. Please replace Vinny.

Jason Campbell:

On the two second-round WRs not making an impact so far: "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed about that," he said about Devin Thomas and Malcolm Kelly. "We had so much expectation for those guys contributing to our offense. I thought we'd grow together quickly. I went over to their place and visited with them about everything. I told them this was the real deal. They needed to show up on time for meetings and to study. We need them out there.

Is this the REAL reason they are in Zorn's doghouse?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 4, 2008 4:56 PM | Report abuse

The posting and all the comments fail to realize that Leigh Torrence is the fourth CB on the depth chart, so he will be playing a lot in the Nickel packages. Tryon would only get in on Dime packages, but even then, Blache could opt to use one of the additional safeties who performed much better than Tryon. So, he probably won't be on the field much and should not have a huge impact on the game...hopefully. Losing Springs is a tough loss; we are perpetually cursed!

Posted by: crazycarl16 | September 4, 2008 4:57 PM | Report abuse

And another thing about Tryon -- if he weren't playing tonight, everyone would be up here hating on Carlos Rogers. Should have kept Ade Jimoh to relieve some of the hate from Tryon.

Watching Justin Tryon try and play football is like watching an antelope get shot... by a tank.

Otherwise, liked your post.

With a weak secondary, pressure must be put on Eli - with or without JT.

When Eli has time, he is very accurate and productive.

IMO, this and the Skins ability to run and control the ball are the keys to the game.

GO SKINS

and who the heck sent that chat question about "Sometimes I wanna watch them but not tonight"??? Loser, get a life. It's 1) The Redskins, 2) It's opening night, 3) It's an NFC East game, 4) It's against a big rival, 5) That big rival is the defending Superbowl champs.

If you're not watching you suck, period, and turn in your Redskins Fan Club card cause you ain't no fan....that is unless you CAN'T watch, which is understandable but equally sucky.

I will gladly apologize if Tyron plays well tonight, I dont think he will be on the field that much because the Giants would have to go a 4 WR set for him to be out there. He looked horrible this preseason, he is 59 and defintely does not possess all world speed like Darrell Green did. He is only a rookie so who knows if he will become a decent corner over the next few years. I am very concerned about Rogers matching up against Plexiglass. I fear that Plexiglass will own him and it will put even more pressure on Campbell and our offense to play damn well and score around 30 points to win.

We will have our revenge tonight. Our revenge for that SJKing game where we couldn't get the SJKing ball into the SJKing endzone that would have won the game. That SJKing game that turned the Gnats(thanks to Cal Dad) season up and ours down.

We will win and the Gnats will struggle for the rest of the year and we will . . . well we'll win this game.

doesn't shock me that davis might not be playing as we do have to inactivate 8 guys and after: Brennan, Moore, Geisenger, Springs, and Kelly it gets interesting since we have guys like McIntosh and Rogers coming off major injuries so you might be able to inactivate Fincher and Taylor is not at 100% so you probably need at least K. Wilson active if not Jackson as well so you've got to sit 3 more guys and my guess is that Davis would sit before Yoder

I am not sure what to think about these developments. Our DL must play out of their minds to protect our secondary. We must also control the ball and give our D all the rest it needs while putting up TD's. Not out of the realm of possibility but a mighty tall task I am hoping they are up for. Go Skins!

If Tryon gets on the field, I hope they blitz the crap out of Manning.

WAG: Good guys 20, Gints 19. Brooks gets a winning drop kick with time expiring.

SKIPPY'S PRE-GAME MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH

Skippy Gzitzman has been given the rare honor of presenting a locker room motivational speech to the Washington Redskins before their opening game against the Superbowl Champion New York Giants. The following is a transcript of that speech. The original is on display at the Smithsonian.

Dearly Beloved,

Hi, my name is Skippy and I have a mental plate in my head. I live with Mama, the twins of my dead sister and my cat, Mr. Whiskers IV, in a FEMA doublewide down from Floyd the Truck Drivin’ Man and his Peterbilt. I really really like Lemon Meringue pie.

Skippy have been asked by Head Coach-for-Now Zim Jorn to give this Motivationary Speak to you Redskims before tonight’s game.

If you're nervous, just keep in mind the guys in the other locker room put on your pants the same way you do, only first they grease ‘em up with Crisco and KY Jelly.

Don't forget, that tonight is the day you take the bull by the shorts, strap him up, and face the music with your ear to the grimestone. Play them “One Day at a Time” although Skippy prefers “The Golden Girls,” 10 PM weeknights on TBS.

In the immoral words of that genius, Norman Einstein, never have so many done so much for so few and vice versa. Rumyard Kipling once wroted in his poem, Want some Candy, Kid?--“If you can get some head when all about you are losing theirs, congratulations, you may already be a winner.”

Today’s contest is not the end of the beginning, nor the beginning of the end. It is merely the beginning of the end of the beginning of the end, unless it rains.

Remberith thith: If a man gains the world but loseth his immoral soles, what doth it profit him in the end, unless he be jellin’?

Don’t think just because they won the Super Bowl that Giants don’t play football. Bowling is a lot like football except it’s played indoors, and it has alleys and bigger balls. Speaking of bigger balls, as the late Coach Vince Lumbago once said earlier, “It’s not the size of the dog in the fight that counts, but enough about Michael Vick.”

But seriously, folks, this is what we practice for, except the guys who were cut, who practiced for little more than whatever tape they could filch.

In closing, don’t forget to tip your towel boy, tighten your jocks and clocks, and remember, win or lose, someone will emerge victorious. And it is Skippy’s firm hose that the Redskims will be the winners tonight. If not, at least make sure the Giants don’t cover. Now get out there and win one for the Giffords.

Finally, if I can leave you with but one thought, I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

Posted by: Skippy | September 4, 2008 6:05 PM | Report abuse

from Draft Day to the Training Camp...

I knew this team actually got worse...

it failed to address its real needs...

it failed to make a serious move in free-agency... and Taylor for a lost DE is not a real move...

All this team accomplished was to get a year older... the OL line is simply pathetic.. the DL is a mirror image of the OL...

the Defensive play calling is anemic... which is to be expected considering the personnel... except for the LB's the Defense is sub-standard when injuries and recovering from injuries is factored in...

The Offense is once again in flux... few plays is good.. but the learning curve and complexity is bad... so the playbook is a wash...

the only hope the Skins have tonight is...

The Offense to come out and play real football... and outscore the Giants.. if they fail to put the points on the board... the Giants will have a field day...

The Offense must move the ball... T.O.P....Keep the Giants Offense off the field as much as possible...

if we get caught in the 3 & Out crutch.. it will be a very long three hours..

Tryon.... I am still floored by this... Vinny has to be on crack...

then again... Zorn stated that the top management structure is the same... so maybe it was a Vinny/Dan/Jim triple blunder....

4-12.... I just hope we beat Dallas twice... if that happens... I will live another yr....

Campbell sacked on the first play cause he holds on to the ball to long, O line looks scared, 3 and out. We look sloppy on defense, need Springs out there, and they will run at JT all night. All of this equals the start of a VERY LONG SEASON. I say 5-11 at best

Posted by: Ranger06 | September 4, 2008 7:33 PM | Report abuse

Jason Campbell should do himself (and apparently the rabid 'Skins fans out there) a huge favor and take a cue from Dante Culpepper -- retire now. He can always go to divinity school and join his father's ministry because, honestly, who needs this B.S.? If these jokers want Colt Brennan, I say let them have him! He should just move on and enjoy his life a-la Heath Shuler. He does not have the temperment, intelligence or self-confidence to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, so he should get out now!
