Samuels, Kelly To Miss Minicamp

Several players will not be able to take part in the Redskins' three-day minicamp that begins Friday, according to Coach Jim Zorn.

Left tackle Chris Samuels is still recovering from triceps surgery but should be ready for June organized team activities, Zorn said. Wide receiver Malcolm Kelly, recovering from another knee surgery, is able to run some but is not slated to be able to take part in football activities. Kelly should be able to take part in June OTAs, however, Zorn said. Guard Randy Thomas (neck surgery) and safety Reed Doughty (back surgery) have been cleared for work but will be limited during minicamp, Zorn said. Zorn also said that tackle Mike Williams, signed Friday, will miss minicamp as he begins trying to shed weight. Williams is at 410 pounds - at one point he reached 450, Zorn said - and the Redskins hope to have him around 370 by training camp. Williams has not played an NFL game since 2005.

Zorn said that he expects fullback Mike Sellers, who has been skipping all voluntary workouts and is seeking a new contract according to team and league sources, to be at minicamp. He said Sellers texted him recently to say he is in great shape.

Time to get younger on the OL. I hope Williams can lose the weight.

Barnes is Springs relief. You need 3-4 starting caliber CB in the NFL if you can get them...and you especially need a taller guy who can come up and bang at the line.

People who keep mentioning Kendall need to catch up. He has played his last game for the Redskins, and he has attended his last practice. Redskins are old across the STARTING Line, Dockery is here, Kendall is gone forever. We got two good years out of an aging warrior, but no way Redskins bring him back. They don't need to do so. Look at the roster. Its FULL of 1-3 year guys you have never heard of. One thing we do need is a C prospect, I am sure we will bring one in as a FA at the least.

LOL 410??????

And we passed on 3rd round projected tackles in the 5-7th rounds?

What a joke. I mean, really.

Oh, and MK12 is a bust.

What's the exact story with Kelly? Is he ever going to be healthy? It doesn't seem like his knees are ever going to be 100%.

Wait, Mike Williams will MISS camp because he's trying to shed weight?

In related news, I recently decided to skip my LSAT class as I prepared to study for my LSAT exam.

410 pounds? You have to be effing kidding me.

This guy will have a freakin' heart attack!

Typical Danny signing...we can rehabilitate him!

He's gonna quit in June and back to stcking shelves at Wal-Mart....sheesh.

3 more picks and Cadogan could fall to us at 221....

Now someone just needs to lock Cerrato in the bathroom so we can make an O-line pick.

Posted by: mac2j | April 26, 2009 5:55 PM | Report abuse

Mike "The Answer" Williams...ROTFLMO.

I am crying laughing......we take special teamers when we could have had some young good offensive lineman.

Our defense better be number 1 in the NFL after this.

Posted by: knight1977 | April 26, 2009 5:57 PM | Report abuse

410? Is he going to play tackle and guard at the same time?

Posted by: Original_etrod | April 26, 2009 5:58 PM | Report abuse

We're ignoring the O-line on purpose to sabotage JC so we don't have to resign him after this year. What other reason could there be?

Posted by: Rypien11 | April 26, 2009 5:58 PM | Report abuse

The Redskins front office is HORRIBLE (AND they'll blame a poor season on Zorn and Campbell). The #1 need going into the off-season was the O-Line, specifically, the right side of the line. They've done Zero to upgrade that side of the line (millions in free agency and all the draft picks, BUT zero to address the O-line other than Dockery on the left guard. SYNDER-CERRATO ARE NOT CAPABLE OF BUILDING A TEAM.

Wow. Just wow.

He could play LT and RT at the same time at that weight.

450 pounds!?!?

Well, hell, it worked for the defense:

Posted by: jiacinto | April 26, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

Mike Williams was a major bust as the 4th pick in 2002. He hasnt played the last 2 years. He says he has a new love for football (out of money) and is ready to fullfill his potential. Although this would be nice, you can't count on this. I love Barnes and he will contribute but they have so many other needs such as OL & LB. They reached for a converted rb in the 5th w/ some talented OL prospects on the board and then they just took a TE from Idaho. INEXCUSABLE...F VINNY

Posted by: jwcallahan91 | April 26, 2009 6:04 PM | Report abuse

I'm so F-ing disgusted with our FO.

Why waste picks on people that were never going to be drafted?

Why keep passing on top flight O-line prospects?

Seriously I wish there was some way to start a fan revolt to remove Synderrato.

They ignored the D line last yr in the draft (until the 7th roung) and it blew up in their face. They come right back around and ignore the O line in the draft this yr. I hope this won't be history repeating itself.

Mike Williams is what happens when you overspend on Haynesworth, Dock and D. Hall. Don't get me wrong, I like all those players but I think they overpaid. All the skins can afford is their 1st and 3rd round picks and that's why they've been drafting guys to make the lines longer in Training Camp. This is horrible. WOW......

Posted by: atari1317 | April 26, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

A fullback? Seriously?

I just hope somebody at the Post has the stones to write a column tomorrow absolutely ripping Snyder and his lapdog Vinny. I can't even fathom passing on an OL each time they've had a chance to get one.

Snyder really thinks that OL/DL depth isn't important. He's a fool and he's got somebody as incompetent as he is as the GM.

As for Kelly=bust. Might as well learn that now and move on.

Posted by: CJMARTIN04 | April 26, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Mike Williams was 375 coming out of college. It's not as bad as it sound (he needs to lose 9% of his body weight to get back to his college weight--that would be less than a 20 lb loss requirement for a 200 lb guy--not really too bad 7 years after college!).

Hey knight,

Steelers

Posted by: wagman1 | April 26, 2009 6:14 PM | Report abuse

Eddie Williams (TE)
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 239
College: Idaho
Conference: WAC

Hometown: San Mateo, CA
High School: Aragon

Combine Results:
Bench Press : 23.0 reps

Positives: Adequate upper and lower body build. Reliable hands, and can extend and snatch the ball outside his frame. Adjusts to low and high passes. Lines up outside, in the slot, on the line and as an H-back. Used on quick screens to get the ball in his hands. Always seems to find the hole in the zone to present a target. Sells the fake well, getting his head around quickly to find the ball. Lowers his pads to bowl over defensive backs and get extra yardage. Has some elusiveness and ability to break tackles in the open field. Fair release off the line, and uses his hands to free himself of jams. Good blocker downfield, getting his hands inside the jersey and sustaining with quick feet. Used on special teams coverage units and is able to wrap up or pound return men on the fly.

Negatives: Finding a position may be an issue. Below average height and strength to play tight end or H-back, but was not used as a lead blocker in Idaho's offense. Struggles to anchor or sustain blocks against defensive ends or bigger linebackers. Will cut block, albeit effectively, in pass protection instead of standing up to blitzers. Doesn't have the straight-line speed to threaten the seam or separate from NFL linebackers and safeties.

Just about every team in the NFL had Flagged Kelly's knees as a problem... except the Redskins. If I remember correctly, they were quoted as saying they are comfortable with his knees and feel he will be a solid contributor.

What a waste of a pick.

And now we draft a FB who may not be able to play this year and probably would not have been drafted.

Skins whiffed in the 5th round on an OT (snatched them up after the Skins pick) and they are just flailing now.

First two picks, pretty good but all downhill from there. What else should we expect. Skins are good early or late in the draft (never at the same time) and haven't figured out the middle.

I miss Gibbs. Actually, I miss having an owner who lets the football people handle the football things. In case you haven't noticed Mr. Schneider, you and Vinny SUCK as GMs and talent evaluators.

Can someone tell me why they took a tight end? We just drafted one last year and have a pro bowler in Cooley.. They're crazy to think that they can get through the season with no O-line depth.. napolean (snyder) said samuels and thomas are still young.. doesn't he realize players start to break down more after 30? course not, cause he knows jack about football I gurantee this 400Ib bum will not play one snap

Posted by: chavez66 | April 26, 2009 6:19 PM | Report abuse

JaLaCa,

Do us a solid and get Morocco on the phone after the draft and see what is going on with some of these late picks. I mean this is 3 guys now who are going to be on special teams p/k coverage.

Posted by: alex35332 | April 26, 2009 6:19 PM | Report abuse

Is it possible some of the OT prospects may not get drafted? Like Boone? Hell, I'd take an alcoholic if he could do a better job of protecting JC's right side...

Posted by: kenboy1 | April 26, 2009 6:21 PM | Report abuse

We could have picked up top 100 (overall) rated guard and tackle prospects and a center in the last 3 picks....

Instead we picked up 3 nobodys that we could have signed as FAs ...We wasted - WASTED - our 5th round pick on a guy rated no higher than 410th overall by anyone I could find and as the 10th worst linebacker prospect (out of 50 rated) in the draft by one scouting service.

A blind girl with darts could have picked better players for us.

LPD and Vinnie definitely have an&l s*x.

They are disgusting individuals for destroying what was once a great team and fan base.

Posted by: knight1977 | April 26, 2009 6:25 PM | Report abuse

The team who has just won 2 of the last 4 super bowls picked up Shipley.. an interior lineman we should have taken.. they know what they're doing.. that's why they win super bowls and we're stuck with tweedle-dee and tweedle dumb making football decisions.. its called DEPTH! Good teams draft for it

I now understand why they give away draft picks.. cause they suck at doing it.. and then they'll be on the radio giving us some politically correct B.S response to why they did it.

Posted by: jpareti1 | April 26, 2009 6:27 PM | Report abuse

I had complained about the 3rd round pick as CB was the one position we had the least need for. But I totally forgot about TE. Thanks Snyder for reminding me.

Posted by: chavez66 | April 26, 2009 6:27 PM | Report abuse

knight1977.. I totally agree with you.. With all the parody in the NFL.. teams going from worst to first.. We are stuck in mediocrity.. What would we do without all this $$?

Only 3 playoff appearances in 16 years.. Haven't even made it to the NFC championship game since 1992.. The Lions are the only other team in the NFC not to play in that game since... Yes, I mentioned us in the same breath as the Lions.. haha

I've been concerned about Kelly's knees. I'm also concerned about our O-Line.

There goes Lydon Murtha at 228. Possibly the only OT left that could end up in the pro-bowl.

Nothing makes you people happy. The FO is trying to make up for past mistakes but can't fix it all in one year, or even two.

You can't draft solely for need in the later rounds. You take the best players available first, needs second.

Posted by: lordtwang | April 26, 2009 6:38 PM | Report abuse

Bold Prediction for 2009.. We will get out to hot start.. again.. defense will be great.. again.. In 2nd half of season, O-line will break down and there will be no depth to help (Anyone remember Geissenger trying to block Demarcus Ware? Haa too funny).. JC won't have time to throw.. We'll skid to an 8-8 season.. sound familiar?

Posted by: jpareti1 | April 26, 2009 6:42 PM | Report abuse

Cody Glenn has more experience as a ticket scalper than he does as a Linebacker. Maybe Snyder is actively seeking self-motivated, outgoing individuals for this position.

Is this an April Fool's prank? The Redskins didn't draft one offensive lineman and the free agent they signed is 410 pounds????? Why even bother with him? Man, I was just scratching my head over most of their draft picks and then I read that Samuels can't practice yet and Thomas is limited. Why, why, oh, why wouldn't you draft offensive linemen? This "best player available crap" is just a cop out. Everyone they drafted today would have probably gone undrafted except for the kid from Maryland. Vinny should get the axe and if his scouts fed him these players as prospects, they should fire their entire scouting network. Unbelievable!

Jason, any chance you can give us some more on Williams? I heard that he's been living with Dockery. I also heard that Dockery's wife is 9.5 months pregnant. I'd be curious to know what that was like, having your 450 pound friend move-in while your wife is pregnant. I'm also curious to know which one of them eats more. Jokes.
