It's That Time ...

Time to put your predictions down in black and white. You'll note it's the same gizmo that we used after the schedule was annouced. We put our top person on the task of resetting it. In case you're wondering, the first time through, you guys predicted 10-11 wins.

Two touchdown game, easy.

The problem will not be the Skins excution. The problem will be Zorn losing the team.

Snyder will begin to launch early this year.

Reprising his Norv locker-room move, I give even odds that Zorn lasts till Halloween.

Hey, why don't we renew our loathing of Michael Wilbon? Does he even follow Redskins football? If so, how could he write this in his column today:

"What Zorn and the Redskins had to settle for was finishing preseason with no serious injuries despite a long camp and five games."

Phillips Daniels went out for the season (and maybe his career) in the first practice, causing us to trade our second round pick to Miami for Jason Taylor. Wasn't this a serious injury?

Someone posted yesterday that when Clinton Portis is injured, tough dots, but when Osi Umeniyoha goes down it's time to shorten the pre-season. We're used to this from the national media, but can't the Post even get the facts straight?

Where are the fact checkers that call Wilbon out on PTI? Cindy, do something about this.

My own expectations are somewhere in the range of 6-10 to 9-7. They have a new coach, a new system, and middling talent. They have serious problems of depth. The QB is still a question mark.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2008 10:16 AM

That's what I thought a half-hour ago, and I haven't changed my mind yet. Maybe after they select the roster?

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2008 10:46 AM | Report abuse

Ever since Wilbon lied in his piece about ST, and refused to admit he was wrong, I don't read him anymore. He's a pos bag of wind.

He's long gone on record as refusing to answer questions about pre-season football, saying it is largely meaningless, but suddenly when given a chance to kick the Redskins he's a changed man. Screw Wilbon....

Alex,

Drink some coffee and chill. I figured that one of the regulars would have joined in and posted some humorous thoughts on potential cabinet members. It's been sooo serious in here as of late regarding political posts and I was just trying to lighten the mood.
Now, getting serious, I do think Washington needs fixing. I honestly don't think that Ralph Nadar is someone that can do it though. That's why I hope McCain picks Pawlenty as his running mate (an up and comer and Washington outsider) instead of going the route (Romney or Lieberman). I'm not too thrilled with Obama and definitely not with Biden.

Yeah, he did sneak this into the middle of his screed: "Usually, I pay zero attention to pre-season results." So, he did make a special exception for the Skins.

And his closing paragraph is "regardless of what happens, I'm right":

If the Redskins go to Giants Stadium and get blown out, we will all say we should have seen it coming. If they go up and knock off the champs to start the season, we (I certainly) will remind anybody who will listen that the preseason is a barometer of nothing.

Last night wasnt' pretty to say the least, but considering the starting receivers, cp, betts, etc weren't playing, I have to believe they'll do better than what we saw last night.. however, they were not in the same class as the teams they've played the past two weeks.. which was obvious..
Winning in preseason doesn't means a thing, but you have to show you're able to move the ball down the field and score points and stop the other team.. they didn't do either very well.. they only averaged 13 pts/game and if you take out the colts game its 9 pts/game.. not only that, they've allowed the most points of the nfc east teams to boot.. its the same m.o its been in the past.. whatever the reason (new systems, coaches, the QB, the receivers, etc).. you can't win games if you can't score points..
Being in such a tough division, with a tough schedule..
i'd have to say 7-9

To me a Washington Insider is someone plugged into the Washington Fed Government game and power circles. For sure she obviously didn't come out of the woods with no connections but she certainly isn't a Washington power player in the mold of McCain and Biden.

I mean Obama was picked as a rising star 5-6 years ago and some powerful people linked him in but he was still seen as an outsider. GWB was seen and billed as an outsider and his dad was the ultimate insider. He was handpicked by Cheney and Baker two powerful washington operators.

I told you we should have traded him when he had value.

I told you he would lose value dramatically as other teams saw that he was another, Heath Shuler, Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Patrick Ramsey, etc.

I told you he was not smart.

I told you he couldn't read defenses.

I told you he would make a bettet tight end than a Quarterback (I may have been wrong there, he has the hands of an arthritic elephant)

Remember now?

I told you so about Jason Campbell!

On a side note I always like how women are referred to as a "minority" when they are in fact a majority.

Looks like Kelly is definitely going PUP if not IR, and Devin's rear end is headed for the end of the bench.

Amazing when your two top WR draftees are outperformed by scrubbinis like McMullan and Mann. (save me the "they were hurt" post and I won't counter with my "out of shape" retort)

But, what can you do? Vinny said he had no choice but to pick them and Davis because his chart told him so.

Vinny will probably spin Snyder that it's all Zorn's fault, bring in a shiny new toy for him next year, and remain as defacto GM Genius and Raquetballer Extraordinaire, buying himself more years running the show.

No wonder why at times 9 guys stayed in to block. And the sad thing is they got no better in the offseason - basically the same guys. I have been a fan for 35 years and this could be the worst season yet - many blow outs coming our way. I hope those guys on the talk radio shows are happy for running Joe out of town.

Too much talent on this team for a complete tank job. The defense will be fine vs most teams, so we should be close in most games. 9-7.

The question marks, which every knows, are the QB and HC. Campbell was much better than his numbers. The INT is on the WR and Cooley dropped a ball he holds on to every other time. The rookie WR won't be on the field that much and Cooley won't make that mistake in the regular season.

Which leaves the HC as an issue. The team had no fire to it last night. If I'd gotten beat 47-3, I'd be angry. Even in preseason. These guys did have something to prove and didn't. I saw frustration on Zorn's face, but this is a team that needs some anger.

If Zorn can hold the chemistry from last year, this team can win 10-12 games. So I'm going for 10-6.

So 10 picks and no starters if Brooks the punter gets cut.

I hope Kelly is ok.

Thomas looks to be at best 4th on the depth chart.

Sleepy is 2nd at best.

Rhinehart-Think this is a good pick but he looks lost at Tackle.

Tryon-I wouldn't let him play on my flag football team.

Colt- Looks pretty solid but hardly plucked from obscurity.

Durant Brooks- If nothing else I guess he brought out the competitive fire in old frosty. Get it fire frosty? I kill myself I really do.

Kareem Moore- Looks to be a project

Chris Horton- Getting picked out of the cleats of Jville running backs even as we speak.

and college scouting is Vinnies strong point...uhhg.

zeke, disagree with you brother there...that is not the question mark...and from Jalaca's chat...he put my sentiments in the best way:

If the O Line isn't better, and looks old and injury prone, and if Devin Thomas and Malcom Kelly are not even an upgrade over Caldwell and McCardell (and in fact look like they can't even contribute much at all for quite some time, then let's try to look at this on a broad scale and point fingers beyond just the young QB who was foisted into yet another difficult transition by people who run things around here. If anything he(jc) may be a symptom of much deeper issues.

In predicting what happens over a season, injuries always play havoc. Who will be lost for the season, and who will miss a few games? I still think the biggest hurdle for this team is JimZ adjusting to the NFC East. My own expectation is 8-8.

You do because more than likely you're in THIS area (the DMV) and follow the Redskins. Do you actually think Wilbon cares about a few 'Skins fans who are pissy because he said some comments about Taylor that we didn't agree with? Sticking with 10 wins, Dealer.

The o-line is old, but really no worse than last year. Heyer should be better if needed over Jansen and Randy Thomas is a massive upgrade. We won 9 games last year with Heyer, Wade and Fabini on the right side. Against a very tough schedule.

As for Kelly and Thomas, I never had them pegged for much for this year. Rookie WRs rarely make major impacts. Beyond Moss and ARE, WR is very weak. That was my reason for wanting Boldin, though whenever I mention that name, Greg's hemmerhoids flare up.

This team wins with defense and the only major defensive change will be Jason Taylor for Philip Daniels, which is an upgrade.

I think that's what i said, only in English. Kelly and Thomas do not perform.

Not to say they wont' someday. After all, the redskins have a great record at picking receivers in the high...oh wait, never mind.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 29, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

I'm not saying that those receivers will work out either. I'm saying that it's not a surprise if they don't play better than someone else who hasn't done anything in the league before.

And the stats comment was directed at everyone. I don't believe stats alone show anything other than what happened. Stats aren't a prediction. They're a reflection.

It seems pretty obvious when I state it that way - but people sure lean on them around here.

I wouldn't be surprised if those two never see the field for more than a couple plays a game for the whole year.... That being said - I think Colt Brennan will prove to be a very wise selection... or lucky ;)

Colt won't do anything in the regular season this year, and I think I'm pretty confident in thinking he'll never be a full-time starter ever, anywhere.

Of course I would like to be wrong and have him lead us to 5 Superbowls, but I'm just not seeing it. Although the swagger is a refreshing change from robotic JC.

If you got Bolt, get him in and teach him how to run a bootleg, have him just do that. Or do the forist gump return man thing. Someone catches it and hands it to him, he runs.

It would all work if not for 1 fact.
Getting Bolt into football is a bad idea.

+++The o-line is old, but really no worse than last year. Heyer should be better if needed over Jansen and Randy Thomas is a massive upgrade. +++--Al, Zeke

In their prime they were a Massive Upgrade. But, unless they return to that level of play, they just look a year older and closer to the end.

+++We won 9 games last year with Heyer, Wade and Fabini on the right side. Against a very tough schedule.+++

And with a veteran Hall of Fame coach and powerful emotional motivation. I like Zorn. I think someday he will be a great coach, probably with another franchise. But right now, he looks like the inexperienced nice guy position coach he was. I don't BLAME him for his inexperience. But it will take time and patience for him to come up to speed, I believe, something Snyder is NOT famous for.

+++This team wins with defense and the only major defensive change will be Jason Taylor for Philip Daniels, which is an upgrade.

Posted by: AL Zeke etc | August 29, 2008 1:10 PM+++

On passing downs, granted, it's an upgrade. But opponents won't be forced to pass if, like Carolina, they can run off tackle and inside the lightweight DE's all day long. No pass rush needed when it's second and two.

This team needs an anchor at at least one DE, like Daniels was, not a flyweight who won't be a factor on running plays, who will be worn down, and who, at age 34, may just be entering injury prone years. Right now, Taylor has two sore feet and a bum knee, and the season hasn't even started.

And a team that may be looking at a disastrous season has no second round pick to screw up next year and precious little cap room to address the troubles on the OLine.

That's the PESSIMISTIC view.

The OPTIMIST in me says that after the shock and aw, sh!t!" of he first five or so games, the team may start to "get it" and get stronger. If their health holds and Zorn can hold onto them and the faith of the ADD front office Suits til then.

FWIW the mccain selection reminds me of Gore trying to distance himself from his FOB club membership. . .

likely to have the same outcome. . .

like Bush or not, the guy put together a coalition that landed him 2 terms in the white house. . .

and mccain is ignoring the formula. . .

now back to the RI side of this. . .
someone pls remind me of the rule of thumb re: the outcome of the last skins game prior to the election being a solid predictor of the election outcome. . .

skins/steelers on Nov 3, night before nov 4 election. . .

skins lose, republics win? ? ?

does that mean the skins will beat the steelers? (maybe the streak will be broken?). . .

I still can't forget that int return for a touchdown right before halftime of the monday night game (titans?) before the republics ran away with the election. . .

I see no Beep.

And Truth - I don't know what you're watching, but Colt looks good. Raw & Young (just like u like 'em, right?) - but good.

You can guess however you want about his future, but I'm hard pressed to see any evidence of him not being a player in the future in this league. And given his popularity for one of the most profitable teams in the league, he'll probably be a player in DC. He's #1 in Jersey sales.

Pschaw all you want. A lot of people, including hall of famers, like what they see in Colt.

Posted by: Dik | August 29, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Cork, when you're QB and HC are both such question marks, the Skins could go any direction.

The defense is less of a question mark. Good defense alone will get us several wins. The NFL has a lot of teams that are middle of the road. We play the NFC West. What teams there scare you? Seattle is tough (I think we play them there), but AZ, SF, STL?

The AFC, we play Ravens, Browns, Steelers and Cincy. All are games we can win if the defense plays well.

Hey guys … I love the abilities that Jason brings to NFL, but I think a 1 and 3 start is going to begin the beginning of the end for him as your starter. As I said last night, I hate to make predictions in the Pre-Season but Colt is something special. I think Jim is going to be forced to make a “gut decision” similar to the one that Duane (he hates when I call him that) made in Dallas with Tony Romo.

Before the Panther game I thought the Skins might go 8-8 in Zorn's first year. Now I think they'll be lucky to win 4 games with the offense Zorn runs with Campbell at QB and a o-line that resembles Swiss cheese. I figure Campbell get's injured by week 4, Collins by week 8, and Brennan takes us to the end of the season.

If we're lucky Snyder head explodes and takes out Vinny Cerrato.

2-14. Deadskins battle for the first pick in the draft. Zorn is canned after game 10
when the team is in open revolt.

Dan Snyder isnt seen at a game after the third home game and is in hiding with Tom Cruise trying to figure out how he can hire Cowher.

Snyder's wifey ends up with the team April 2009 in the divorce proceedings. Deadskins make the playoffs in 2009 losing in NFC title game. They win the Super Bowl in 2010 season with the former Mrs Danny Boy Snyder at the helm and Russ Grimm as coach
