Jammal Brown returns to lineup; Artis Hicks' status uncertain

By Rick Maese

One of the Redskins' ailing offensive linemen will be in the lineup Sunday at Tennessee, but the status of another is not as clear.

Coach Mike Shanahan said right tackle Jammal Brown, who suffered a head injury in Monday's loss to Philadelphia, passed a concussion test this week and will be able to play Sunday at Tennessee. Right guard Artis Hicks, though, is not as certain for Washington.

After injuring his thigh and groin late in the game against the Eagles, Hicks was limited Friday after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday. Will Montgomery handled reps in his place this week and would get the start at right guard if Hicks isn't healthy enough to play Sunday.

Cornerback Carlos Rogers and LaRon Landry also missed practiced Wednesday and Thursday and both were limited Friday. Shanahan said he'd wait to see how the two defensive backs feel this weekend before deciding whether either can play against the Titans.

"We're going to test them tomorrow before we go, see how they do," Shanahan said. "If I feel good [about them], then there's a chance. I've got to get a chance to watch them, though, going a little bit harder tomorrow. It was a good sign, though. They got some practice in, so that was a positive."

Just what we need.... already subpar OL returning gimpy... and all the backs (QB, RBs) are gimpy.

I hope this is more Shanahan misinformation!

Let's just say Hicks can't play and Dockery and Portis both have good games.

That'd be nice we could stay on that graphic in the "in the hunt" column.

Our Oline has been really weak this year..aren't we suppose to have better players than last year?...I wonder want Buges could've done with this crew..the current Oline coach needs to go...he's done absolutely nothing...no in-game adjustments..nothing...just saying that's all

With the sort of injury Portis had -- me thinks having an extra week to get fully back is a good idea. I'd keep him out this weekend.

I think I'll look more carefully this weekend at Jammal Brown. He's gotten a lot of criticism, but I haven't watched him much.

IT CAN NOW BE REVEALED...

... That the call on whether Clinton would be good to go was always meant to be a game time decision, but then somebody realized that CP26 would need to pass through TSA security before he boards the plane to Music City...

It so happens the screeners started out by taking a nudie team photo -- except for Cooley, who had already been declared "good to go" after he had earler texted a picture of his junk to the airport.

Then they pulled a few the players aside for a full contact "screen play" -- and that's when they really started paying special attention to "cuttin' an eye" on Clinton's "package."

The long and short of it: After a thorough huddle beneath the tent and review by the TSA officials, Portis was cleared to play on Sunday -- but also told that if he fails to do well, he may need to find another way back to Washington following the game.

Washington will not be charged a time out.

Posted by: scampbell1975 | November 19, 2010 11:13 AM

I said that was conventional wisdom. I never bought into it, and I never thought replacing the coach and QB would make much difference without improved O-line play.

I said that ad nauseum.

Posted by: Alan4 | November 19, 2010 11:57 AM

Bull crap. That is definitely NOT conventional wisdom. That may be something touted or expected by boneheads that don't know the game of football but conventional wisdom for people that follow and know the game know that it takes 2 years at a minimum. Look at the Chiefs, Rams, Lions, Raiders and the Browns. Still not great football teams but are turning it around and didn't do it in the first year.

Posted by: retroskins14 | November 19, 2010 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Marcus Washington had a couple solid seasons for Indy, that's what made us take notice on him.

Had an awesome first year here with us and made the ProBowl, should have made at least 2 or 3 more here with us, don't really understand why.

My problem with him, and us as an organization, is once he got injured he kept getting injured and would never recover, which wasn't necessarily his fault, but I would love for this team to cut ties with aging/injured players faster. We kept Marcus for AT LEAST 2 extra years than we should have. Thanks again Vin!!!

Will Montgomery!!

Yay! We're puttin' the Dirt Bags back together!

Hey, we're finally gonna see what a "REAL QB" can do behind last year's O Line. I mean, once Trent Williams goes down (hopefully for the Giants game), and we get Rhinehart back in there, all we gotta do is swap out Armstrong for Randle El, K.Williams for Quinton Ganther, and I think Roydell Williams is already doing a FINE impersonation of Malcolm Kelly.

Hey, we're a couple back to back fakes away from being a game better!

Jeez, for all the hype during the offseason, what exactly DID we do?

Looking back, I say every pick at every position OTHER than O Line looks like about the dumbest picks by anyteam this year.

Did we really need another TE in camp? WTF? It should have been 2 picks at LT, 2 at LG, 2 at RG, and 2 at RT.

If we could manage that, by trading away a couple of our "stars," we might be able to actually run the ball and pass protect within a year.

But, I'm no genius like the guys making millions. What The F? 90% of us said the same thing, they outsmarted us, and now they look like morons. Except that they make a LOT more money to do it.

What a world. Fking idiots everywhere.

Posted by: WaitingGuilty | November 19, 2010 12:55 PM

I am exposing the idoicy on RI. Now when I pull out the guns and show you how stupid it is to 'Blame Viny' for the past 10 years...now it's that was Gibbs Decision, that was GGWilliams Decision, Spurrier wanted him....

The problem here is that the team needs to stick to a plan for more than 2 years. If you keep changing, then you always starting from the bottom again. STAMPED and NOTARIZED. CERTIFIED & SIGNITURE REQUIRED.

Re: Haslett and comparing GB's successful transition in year 1 of the 3-4.

Haslett stated that "but they had two first-round picks, a third-round pick, a fifth, a couple of other things."

So, if we didn't have any of that. WTF did we switch this year? Couldn't we have switched next year? HAsn't HAslett orchestrated the 4-3 & 3-4 defenses? Stuff like this is what (truly) doesn't make sense.

Posted by: 4thFloor | November 19, 2010 3:04 PM | Report abuse

We have got to start rolling McNabb more. Get him out of the pocket to give him a chance, and to force the defense to account for him running. Sure, he's banged up and he doesn't pose quite the threat of a Vick, but he can still make plays with his legs when he needs to.

Also, folks "up here" have been calling for Banks as a receiver, and it's time. With Banks' acceleration and speed, sending him downfield could mean McNabb needs the O-line to protect him for one second less. If you're having trouble giving your QB enough time to throw, you do what you can to shorten the amount of time it takes for plays to develop. Speed in the receiving corps goes a long way to making that happen.

This is starting to feel like an argument just for the sake of arguing. Claiming you have any "Guns" to pull out to defend Vinny is comical.

Sure some Cerrato picks panned out, and a flipped coin will land on tails 50% of the time. So what.

I'm not blaming Vinny for the last 10 years. I blame Snyder for allowing Vinny into a coin flip contest with a 4 sided quarter.

My original point is that you and Cerrato are the only people on earth that would call it good with #11,#12,#13,#86 and #89 catching passes next year.

Not really the best company for you to keep talent evaluation wise.

Have a great weekend. HTTR.

Honestly, this is the most BACKWARDS explanation of how football works that I have EVER heard.

Remind me to never ever listen to this guy ever again, no matter what.

If you really think the world operates like that, you should really think about hiding in your bedroom closet because somebody's going to take full advantage of your idiocy if you leave your house.

Oh, my God.

INcredible.

RI should ban you for life like they did Poopy_McPoop. I'd rather hear about his bowel movements than have to imagine the "gears" in your head turning to come up with that.

Along the same lines, why don't we just hire McNabb as coach and he can draw up the plays to the fast guys who will be in the other endzone uncovered in 1.8 seconds...

Whatever, freakzilla, you win. I can't even imagine coming up with something as retarded as you just said.

It's shocking. I'm really impressed.

And to be honest, this year is a waste. We SHOULD be building toward the future. It would have been nice to win now, but that aint gonna happen.

I just wish Shannies had said this is a rebuilding year with 20 preseason games and we're gonna see who wants to be on the Super Bowl team a couple years from now.

But, NOOOOOOOOOOooooooo!

Posted by: Thinker_ | November 19, 2010 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Thinker_ my point is that drafting Olinemen is necessary, but not at the expense of other positions. The whole idea of the draft IMO is to build a team that will have success under the systems the team runs on offense and defense. The 2010 Redskins have many wholes to fill if they want to attain competency under the Shanny plan. It's not a one year turn around. The Skins have youngin on the Oline on PS, as well as the ability to pick up other youngins this coming offseason

Our boys are 7 point dogs this week. Considering our injuries, the fact that we're really just not very good, and playing on the road following a MNF game that gives us a very short week, I'd say we would be very lucky to cover 7 points. I'm thinking a double digit loss on Sunday.
