Shanahan says Jammal Brown is still recovering

It has been clear since the preseason that right tackle Jammal Brown is not fully recovered from the hip injury that sidelined him for the entire 2009 season. And now the Redskins have finally acknowledged the problem.

"It's bothering him," Coach Mike Shanahan said during his Monday news conference at Redskins Park. "There's still a situation with range of motion that's not quite there yet and he's working through it. It's painful."

The Redskins intended to rotate Brown and backup tackle Stephon Heyer on each series during Sunday's 17-14 victory against the Chicago Bears, but the plan was scrapped after Heyer suffered a sprained ankle early in the game. Although Brown still is listed as a starter, Heyer is pushing him.

"We thought Stephon did well enough, when he did play, to give him some more playing time," Shanahan said. "There's competition all the time."

The Redskins acquired Brown from New Orleans in a June trade, and Brown, eventually, could help a Redskins offensive line that is improved after being among the worst in the league last
season. But Brown needs time to continue healing.

Donovan McNabb has been sacked 16 times - tied for the fourth-highest total in the league. And he has been hit a lot. Although rotating tackles is not the best way to build chemistry along
the offensive line, it seems the Redskins may have no choice because Brown is nowhere close to being in top form.

ZEKE’S UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES brought to you by the fine people at Yahoo!

The Skins roster has no shortage of former first round draft picks. Of the 30 or so guys getting significant playing time, 14 were picked in round 1.

But this week, I want to talk about Shanahan’s alternative to the draft -- the scrap heap. Specifically, the Scrap Heap 5: Brandon Banks, Ryan Torain, Keiland Williams, Anthony Armstrong, Kory Lichtensteiger.

The Scrap Heap 5 are all from the ‘never been anything’ category. Banks, Williams and Armstrong were not drafted, KL was a 4th round pick and Torain a 5th – both cut by Denver when Shanahan left. All these guys are on offense.

One criticism leveled towards Shanahan is his failure to get this team younger. But these 5 players represent a stealth youth movement. The guy who Armstrong (27) replaced will be 39 next month. KL (25) replaced Dockery (30). Banks (22) replaced ARE (31). Torain (24) and Williams (24), replace Portis (29) and Betts (31). On average, 7+ years younger.

Banks is potentially a great KR/PR. He’s already made some important plays and there are only 2 reasons that wouldn’t continue. Holding onto the ball and staying healthy. So far, so good, as he did recover his fumble vs Chi.

Torain does fit Shanahan’s run game. It is way too early to feel confident in his role as a #1 back and his injury history gives me pause. Back to back strong games gives reason for hope. Whether he can get to the corner against fast defenses will be a key issue – and fumbles another.

Williams remains a bit of a mystery. He caught an important TD against Indy, but we’ve seen very little of him. Still, 11 receptions for a very part time player is a good start. Several RBs in this league have made themselves valuable by being a good receiver–the West Coast offense likes to use the RB in that role. The first WCO guy to lead the league in receptions wasn’t Jerry Rice. It was an RB, Roger Craig.

Armstrong has separated himself from all Skins WRs except Moss. People want to categorize him as a deep threat, but I get a sense he can make plays all over the field. He seems to have a great feel for how to get to the ball, bring it in efficiently, and if needed, fight for it. If not for the drops …

As for KL, I don’t know. The times I’ve focused on him, its a mystery to me how he got the job. Maybe it has been my bad timing. There is a lot of growth needed here -- perhaps he has the talent and needs the time to develop. Consider me a skeptic, though Shanahan’s historical success with OL isn’t something I’d bet against. Got a sneaking suspicion that LG might not be KL’s final position on the OL.

We all know the long list of recent draft picks that didn’t pan out. But Shanahan has developed a different sort of pipeline. The Scrap Heap 5 may or may not last, but for now, they are something.

That is it for this week with ZEKE’S UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES, naturally, brought to you by the fine people at Yahoo!

Hopefully, Brown gets back to form...God knows we need him to.

If he's gonna struggle all year, I'd rather put him on the shelf and hope he recovers fully next year than keep putting him out there to be Stephon Heyer 2.0 and risk further injury...no sense in risking that we NEVER get a return on the investment...

No kidding Zeke. AA caught a pass that was meant for and tipped by another receiver (can't remember who) two games ago and recovered one of ATV's fumbles yesterday.

Glad to see him starting in JG place.

When people talk about the Skins being "lucky"...

I point to the New York Giants Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots...

For Eli Manning to come out of that near sack and for David Tyree to make that catch was the luckiest play I've seen in years.

Would you give the ring back?

A win is a win (period)

When I look at a roster, I think mostly about the top 30 or so guys ... guys that will be on the field for a good number of plays or are key backups.

6DB, 4LB, 6DL on defense
5OL, 4WR/TE, 1FB, 2QB and 2RB on offense
K, P, returner on teams

I'd only count the K and P as key if they stand above the crowd. After the elite, there aren't huge differences between guys who have P/K jobs and guys who are on call for a job.

Its good to have some 6-figure salary guys making contributions. All of the Scrap Heap 5 are reasonably locked into their roles now -- only Williams, when Portis returns, is in a spot where he isn't in control of his own fate.

WHAT?

The only time Heyer "pushes" for the starting job is when everyone else is injured. And even then you have to weigh your options.

Look for the FS position to be addressed in the offseason.
Posted by: 72Redskins

Moore hasn't been given a real chance to show what he can do when completely healthy. It would be nice to upgrade that position, but if he plays well down the stretch after the bye we should look to fill a lot of other holes first.

I know the Hall lovers will disagree, but I really think we need a CB before we need a FS. Buchanon has GOT to go, and Rogers may or may not return.

Brown is struggling through recovering from injury and Heyer is... Heyer. I wonder what it will take for Capers or Robinson to get promoted. Both are what I would consider developmental prospects, but the team is going to start thinking IR for Brown if this problem gets worse and they need more options at offensive tackle.

During the bye I suspect they'll give those guys some work, maybe rest Brown to quiet down his issue.

I like "Hawkeye" Hall's take that he'll get his share of INTs on the opposing team's no.1, even if he's been burned a few times..Buchanon totally blew that zone coverage on Knox in the endzone (just like the game-losing TD to Houston Android), and you could see him being berated for it on the sideline afterwards..3rd CB needs to be addressed, agreed..

And he turns into an instant defender if the pass gets intercepted that can tackle, like yesterday..AA is a welcome development for sure..

McNabb still needs to play better, we can't depend on defensive or special teams TDs for our victorys, though granted the Bears are a top 5 defense..These epic "Last Game On Earth" games have gotta go, we sure could use a 20 point blowout of the Lions , just for relief..

No hate for Heyer. I just don't think he's as good as Brown was when he was with the Saints. Heyer is not a rookie. The "he's developing" tag really doesn't fit anymore. He is what he is and that is a backup tackle. That's not a bad thing because he gives Washington options, but I don't think any offensive line coach in the league would plan for him to be a long time starter.

Jamal Brown is a 2x pro bowler at LT. He's coming off of hip and hernia surgery and is learning to play RT. He needs to get healthy and then we'll get a better guage on him moving forward.

BTW. New Orleans could also receive a 2012 sixth-round pick, contingent on Brown playing 90 percent of Washington's plays this season or making the Pro Bowl.

MS might be trying to hold on to that 6th RD pick.

I saw him mostly listed as a second-to-fourth rounder who fell before the draft. Not sure why except he's not that good. West Virginia runs an offense that doesn't translate that well to the NFL, which may have been a factor.

Mostly, those guys were 'somebodies' at one point. Successes. Guys people knew about. High draft picks, etc. So i stayed away from the reclamation projects to focus on the young 'never been' guys.

Kemo, Brown, Carriker, Holliday, Galloway and Bidwell (on IR?) have all been highly regarded.

Simpson really hasn't shown anything in his time, will need to wait and see if he makes it into a role with significant plays. Roydell also did something in this league -- at least for 1 year. But he hasn't found his way into one of the 30 'key guy' roles.

The Scrap Heap 5 are in the mix, playing key roles.

I understand.

I'm watching the giants as they are the one NFC East team we've yet to face.

And most are saying the G-Men might be the best team in the division.

Their offensive is playing better, they say.

They've found 3 young solid receivers to replace Plax, they say.

They still have a good defensive line, they say.

And everything they say is enough for smart redskins' fans to pay attention as if we are to make a mark in the division, we must see the New York Giants in the same way we saw them back in the late '80s:

The team that just might be in our way as we move forward.

So it doesn't matter who wins tonite.

What matters is matching up with Big Blue later in the year for what might be two very violent games.

He had a good game but was helped by playing in the Nickel and was only on the field for a few run plays. Those 2 runs combined for 25 yds.

I can point to 3 plays that were exceptional..

The sack were he pushed Williams into Cutler for the sack

The goal line play where he jumped over the guy trying to cut block him and hit Cutler while Fletch knocked out the ball. (Turns out it was actually a TD, thank God Lovie is a terrible coach.)

He also showed hustle with a downfield block on the Hall return (lucky he hit an OL or it may have drawn a flag) and made a tackle on Taylor that he wouldn't have made 1 week or 2 ago.

Stats don't tell the whole story (3 total tackles and had 1 sack) as he played a big role at crashing the pocket for Orakpo's 2 sacks.

BUT, this is why we made him the highest paid DL in NFL history and we need him to play like this EVERY WEEK. I can count on 1 hand the number of games where he's "brought it" in his 23 games in the BnG.

DHall on the other hand…

I've rightly questioned his coverage skills and tackling but have always maintained that he has ELITE hands (easily the best on the team) and the ball always seems to find him. Yesterday he did it all (after a tough 1st half) and was the reason we won. He has more catches than Roydell Williams on the season.

Let me know when you're done with the AH victory and redemption parade.

I always call it like I see it. He had a good game. He made 3 discernable plays.
I expected more out of him considering we were playing against the 2009 version of the Skins OL.

I'm not sure he could ever life up to that mistake of contract but he needs to bring it every week. He's had the privilege of wearing the BnG 23x and he's had a couple of good games.

Sorry but I'm not going to lower the bar of what is considered a great game, and it has nothing with him all but wiping his ass with our franchise the last 6 months.

The best way to acquire the picks to dop this proper would be to franchise McNabb, trade him, move AH for picks, and hope that somehow, you go into the draft with 3 additional picks in the middle rounds.

My number one pick is either Cam Newton or Ryan Mallet with Jake Locker right behind.

My mid round picks are at center and guard and running back.

My free agent money is spent on a linebacker, FS, and NT.

But above all, I'm not in the Extend McNabb Camp.

From the season preview of ZEKE'S UNIQUE PERSPECTIVES ....

"Pass blocking TEs and RBs are going to have a huge say in this division.

How about the other teams? I’m happy to say it -- dallas is the most vulnerable to these pass rushers. The help (RB and TE) guys aren’t that good and they’ve got leaks already springing on parts of the line. Piñata Sundays, starring tony romo as the piñata (It’s another Piñata Sunday – sing it to the tune of Tequila Sunrise)."

and ...

"what I’ve said so far assumes the QBs of the NFC Beast are mostly healthy, most of the time. I’m not sure I’d bet on that assumption, as the QB injury risk is unusually high."

---------

Not saying I called the injury to romo, but I'm not surprised. And I'm not surprised that it came because of a missed RB pickup. I clearly missed on one point, it happened on a Piñata Monday.

I'd also like the Giants to start losing some games. But there's plenty of time for that. I do not like the Giants.

No matter what jerry jones said earlier about not firing wade during the season this week will really be hard not to. Not kicking the field goal, going for 2 way to early even though they got it but still... he is the worst coach for the so called best show on turf... FDALLAS they need to stop living on their past dynasty and realized they are just a team that doesn't know how to win. They finally win a playoff game last year and they back it up with this sh*t show of a team. F U DALLAS and F U DALLAS fans who fail to realize reality even more then some redskins fans. Hate on our redskins team this year but its a long term project that is finally controlled by 2 football knowledge human beings. Future is bright for us if we can groom a qb under Mcnab. Lions have lost by a grand total of TEN points to three teams we've beaten in very close games: Bears, Eagles, Packers.

Lions crushed the Rams two weeks ago in Detroit... the Rams who two weeks prior to that manhandled our Skins.

Stafford may be back in the saddle.

Ndamakong Suh.

etc...

We can and I think "should" win at Detroit, but this looks like a dangerous game. I'm sure others have noted this already, but I just wanted to get all these nagging concerns on record.

as bad as wade coached the game, I have no idea why nyg didn't go for the 1st down late in the game (w/2 min left)... and kicked the FG instead.

Make it on that 4th and 1, and its over -- 3 kneel downs and no injury risk. Fail and dallas needs to go 94 yards. And dallas still would need an onside kick and another score.

Instead, they kick the FG, then dallas gets about 20 more yds of field position from the kickoff. They go quickly down field to score and then they have a shot with an onside kick.

Bad call by the jints coaches

Why is fantasy football for the insane?

In the RI Hamster league, a 1-5 team played a 1-4-1 team -- and played the highest scoring game of the year and had the 2 highest scores of the week. The winning team, Geelong, had the highest single game score of the season. The 3rd highest score of the week was by another 1-5 team.

Those 3 teams scored 358 points and now are a combined 5-15-1.

The 4 teams with winning records (combined record: 22-6) combined for just 321 points.

Posted by: zcezcest1 | October 26, 2010 1:15 AM | Report abuse

Well of course Geelong had the highest single game score: they're an Australian Rules team. Have you seen the scores those guys put up? Over 100 with regularity.

Giants are scary. So is Philly with Vick. Heck, even Dallas didn't look so bad toward the end with Kitna in there.

We've been scraping by. I wish we could make a push to some legitimacy, but with Torain, Galloway, our O Line?

I mean, we could start going winless at any moment.

We are THAT close to being the ZornSkins again.

Doughty, Kareem "Forget It, Just Go Back To The Bench" Moore, and Loose Cannon Haslett?

Identity crisis.

So far, our identity is "Get The W." And it's worked most of the time. But...

So, yeah, the Lions scare me. Everyone does. Especially the Giants. And Philly. And Dallas, even with Kitna.

Somebody hold me.

Cowboys blog game chat. You can actually feel the swagger being ripped from their souls. So sweet...

Posted by: will_ga | October 26, 2010 3:09 AM | Report abuse

will, I'm not sure why they had any swagger at 1-4 to begin with.

Cowpies are DONE. They have to go 7-3 the rest of the way just to break even. If they can't get more than one win in the "easy" part of their schedule, what do you think happens once they play the Packers, Colts, Eagles (twice), Redskins, and Ginas again? Right now it'll take a festivus miracle for them to do any better than 6-10.

And I had 'em 8-8...who knew I was actually OVERrating them?

Enough about them...they're now officially Jerry Jones' worst nightmare: irrelevant.

Now we turn our sights to the Ginas. We've got a shot at them...they didn't look bulletproof last night and it looks like you can pressure Eli into picks. If we can actually, you know, block their pass rush we should be able to at least split the season series with them.

Good to have hope...we haven't had that here in awhile.

What We’ve Learned 10/25/10
By: John Keim
Examiner Staff Writer
10/26/10 1:18 AM EDT

1. The NFC has a lot of mediocre football teams » So the fact that Washington has a 4-1 record in the conference looms large, assuming the Redskins can stay in playoff contention. Eleven NFC teams have at least three wins and none have more than five. Only Atlanta had five wins in the NFC (the Giants had four entering Monday’s game vs. Dallas) while five AFC teams had that many victories. And none of the expected NFC heavyweights — New Orleans, Dallas and Minnesota — are playing well.

2. Punter Hunter Smith has no ego » Or, at the least, he shelved it. The strategy Sunday of kicking the ball out of bounds rather than to Devin Hester destroyed his average, but it was effective. The Bears started one drive after a punt beyond their own 30-yard line. The Redskins helped by at least moving the ball enough to punt from a good position, so a short kick would not hurt. But there have been other punters that would not have angled their punts so much, trying to get every last yard possible. Smith did not and it helped.

3. The Redskins’ offensive line is only mediocre in run blocking » But the run game has worked because of the scheme and the fact that Ryan Torain is able to break tackles. In the past two games, the bulk of his 225 combined yards have come after contact. That’s a hard way to live. But Sunday, the scheme helped open the edges. They used more offset-I formations, allowing fullback Mike Sellers to get around the edge quicker, taking out a linebacker. They also had tight end Chris Cooley motion to that side and that allowed him to seal the end or get outside cleanly and take out a defender.

4. Joey Galloway is not exactly proving that he still has anything left as a player » In seven games, the 16-year vet has caught eight passes, which wouldn’t be bad but he was the No. 2 receiver for the first six games and now is No. 3. The problem is, he’s a limited route runner at this stage of his career, which is why teams know he wants to go deep and most likely down the middle on a post. He’s rarely open.

also to the post below Keiland Williams was NOT drafted by denver and then cut when Shanahan was fired. Keiland Williams is a free agent rookie from LSU sighed this year by washington. he is a rookie and NOT a first year player.
