Jason Campbell Seriously Injured - Dislocated Patella

Two Bears brought him down as he threw, collapsing his left knee and lower leg. The hit was not from the side - where you immediately fear multiple ligament tears - but he did go down hard. He was helped to his feet and is being put on a cart right now.

He was pulled down from behind by Ogunleye and Anderson.

At the same time Chris Cooley is limping to the locker room with a left leg injury.

How about they fire everyone in the off-season, change their name, and move to a new stadium. Or someone buy the damn team from Snyder. This team could not be any more cursed since JCK passed away.

THIS TEAM IS CURSED!

Franchise killer there!

Could be a multi-year set back.
FUDGE!!

skins are officially done this season. Assuming Campbell is jacked up, now they're done for next season also, if not more.

No way Snyder's millions will lure Cowher now.

Horrible evening. Cindy, if I eat this whole carton of Mud Pie ice cream, do I get a pass on the diet?

Posted by: PDiddy | December 6, 2007 9:33 PM | Report abuse

at least Cooley was walking into the locker room.

Posted by: makalb18 | December 6, 2007 9:34 PM | Report abuse

BTW-Gumball mentioned that the Skins have gthe lightest o-line in the league. Anyone know if thet's true?

Posted by: gringoinmiami | December 6, 2007 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Hey at least we know we sucked this year and we will suck next year, but Joe will get to finish out his contract.

Yippee! Collins gets to save the season!

Posted by: Xlnt | December 6, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

Let's wait and see on Jason's knee. It looked bad yes, but who knows. We're not doctors, and the same sort of thing happened in the preseason, and he was ok. Lets not jump to conclusions. Todd Collins is not awful, so lets see what happens. Our defense is playing well, soo just a few plays from our O gets us a win tonight. Hopefully everyone is ok. Go Skins, come on guys, stop being so negative and be a fan!

Posted by: chagnon10 | December 6, 2007 9:36 PM | Report abuse

This is fukcing ridiculous. Things can not get any worse. 2-0 spiraled into the most nightmarish season imaginable.

How, because I'm not quick to sell my team out and sell out. Some of you guys need to grow up and believe in your team. So quick to forget what this team has been through. Stop bashing the team and just root for them, they deserve it at this time.

Posted by: the_crazy_one17 | December 6, 2007 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Honestly...even if it is an ACL and that is probably the worst case scenario. That would likley be a nine month recovery to about 80% (= McNabb this year), but the reason it is going to be a real killer is b/c he isn't going to get the needed experience over the remaining 3 games.

Posted by: FireGibbs | December 6, 2007 9:49 PM | Report abuse

This one crazy a$$ game... punt, missed field, goal, punt, punt, punt, missed field goal, injuries up the wazuuu....

Doesn't an aircast usually mean a broken bone? September is so far away but who the hell knows. The way these last 2 weeks have been there is no wonder players looked shocked. What the hell else can go wrong for us.

Portis 12

Campbell -2

OL is horrible tonight

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | December 6, 2007 9:52 PM | Report abuse

Could this season go any worse?

We are one play away from Mark GULP Brunell. I will shart myself if I hear 340 at any point over the next 4 weeks.

On a positive, who is ready for Gibby's 16th second half loss?

Book it... UP HERE

Posted by: dfly24 | December 6, 2007 9:53 PM | Report abuse

I would love to think no one would ever target another player like that.

I think the cold, hard field is playing a part.

Posted by: mmok | December 6, 2007 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Portis looks shot. Done. Put "starting RB" on the off-season wish list.

Hey, at least we'll win the Off Season Superbowl like we usually do.

Plus a new coach.

Can't wait for February.

Posted by: gdennie | December 6, 2007 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Definitely NOT targeted. Let's not even go there.

This is an absolutely cursed season. I just want it to end mercifully.

Terrible, terrible, terrible.

PLEASE LET JC BE OK, NO KNEE DAMAGE!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!

Posted by: redryan400 | December 6, 2007 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, but Campbell's throwing arm was hit first. That was likely an accident, though.

What the hey, Brunell got us to the playoffs 2 years ago, who's to say he can't do it this year? LOL!

Posted by: Xlnt | December 6, 2007 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Could JC have a dislocated knee or knee-cap? When he was on the field holding his knee, it looked too far up and too far to the left. Whatever it is, lets all just hope he'll be ok.

you guys are a bunch of idiots. It will take some drives for Colling to feel more comfortable. Hopefully Cooley is coming back . Lets win this game and get ten days off. Joe Gibbs will be back one more year. Campbell will be ok. Worse case scenario its a 8 month rehab which will make him ready for training camp. Lets hope its not that serious. Could still be a sprained Medial Collateral or something like that.... Go skins!!!

Well there was the Grossman hit. Then earlier I thought Samuels took a shot at that guy Garay's knee. If you are knee-hunting, you can pretty much take out a guy whenever you want. I don't think that's what's happening here but, wow.

Posted by: SMACK1 | December 6, 2007 9:59 PM | Report abuse

You might hate me for saying this, but JC should have gotten rid of that ball sooner... He had a similar play against Buffalo and took an unnecssary shot when he's getting chased down like that he has to play with more urgency and make a pass decision, run with it hard or throw it away.

Damn - i hope he's ok!

I hope JC is OK but I don't think it's a big loss. We were not only losing with him, I think we were losing without him.

This is a team that is always going to be in close games and he can't come in during hte clutch, he can't run, and he holds the ball too long.

Let's go after Derek Anderson in the off-season, get rid of Brunell and draft someone who can start in 3 years.

From a brief reading, it looks like JC can be back to sports-related exercises a couple months after surgery. Done for the season, but fine for off-season training.

Officially called the patellar ligament. It is a continuation of the common tendon of insertion of the quadriceps femoris muscle that extends from the patella to the tibial tuberocity. This ligament also strengthens the anterior surface of the joint. The posterior surface of the ligament is separated from the synovial membrane of the joint by an infrapatellar fat pad. Thats what I got from my anatomy book

Seriously, what happened to Smoot?

Posted by: dlhaze | December 6, 2007 10:45 PM

He heard the last call for the Love Boat, so off he went!

Posted by: Soups1 | December 6, 2007 10:46 PM | Report abuse

Dr. Cindy,

There's been a lot of conjecture up here about Campbell's injury, but none of these guys have a medical degree. Give us the definitive word -- will be be back in the 4th quarter, and which season?

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 6, 2007 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Cooley is a BAMF. The Skins get clowned for their draft picks or lack-there-of, but Cooley was a grand slam of a pick.

Posted by: makalb18 | December 6, 2007 10:47 PM | Report abuse

I found Moss!

Posted by: FireGibbs | December 6, 2007 10:47 PM | Report abuse

nice pass by collins but i think samuels needs to tell collins to move up a bit, something that jc was doing well

Posted by: dealer | December 6, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse

I wanna see Saunders open up the playbook now!!

Posted by: david | December 6, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse

That's 2 illegal formations. Are these mistakes by the offense or another example of the coaches not knowing the rules...? This time when they draw up the plays.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | December 6, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Hey guys it looks like we could put this one away...feels strange, lets move this back a bit

Posted by: FireGibbs | December 6, 2007 10:49 PM | Report abuse

I'm getting pretty drunk. IS this a pre-season game? Sure looks like one.

Posted by: dlhaze | December 6, 2007 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Who is this Patella you guys keep talking about? Is she hot?

Posted by: bethesdaboy1 | December 6, 2007 10:49 PM | Report abuse

I think Portis slipped on his diarehea.

Is that "opening up the playbook"?

Posted by: FireGibbs | December 6, 2007 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Am I seeing this right? Cooley is taken over. Can someone please tell me if he's making it happen after the catch or what?

Posted by: ga8085 | December 6, 2007 10:50 PM | Report abuse

700 pages in the playbook and this is the best we've got?

Posted by: makalb18 | December 6, 2007 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Collins throws a nice ball, especially for a guy who hasn't done it in about eight years.

Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 6, 2007 10:51 PM | Report abuse

dlhaze...warm August day here too!

Posted by: FireGibbs | December 6, 2007 10:51 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Soups1 | December 6, 2007 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Put ARE at QB inside the 10, can't get much worse than what they've got now.

Posted by: makalb18 | December 6, 2007 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Bryant "what would appear to be" Gumbell sucks what would appear to be my a$$

Posted by: dlhaze | December 6, 2007 10:52 PM | Report abuse

We will never be a good team till we can score touchdowns in the redzone, field goals don't win championships.

I like big butts and I can not lie!

Posted by: FireGibbs | December 6, 2007 10:53 PM | Report abuse

This is the part where Hester runs it back for a TD

Posted by: garygarbo | December 6, 2007 10:53 PM | Report abuse

I think Portis' "upset stomach" is just code for took a shot in the sack.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | December 6, 2007 10:53 PM | Report abuse

Collins has surgical precision. I think Campbell thinks too much on third downs.

Posted by: Xlnt | December 6, 2007 10:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: makalb18 | December 6, 2007 10:57 PM | Report abuse

Don't look now but Todd Collins is 11-16 for 164 yds

plus .....

he threw it away on 3rd down instead of forcing an INT in the red zone as we have grown accustomed to in the last month

Posted by: RedskinRay1 | December 6, 2007 10:57 PM | Report abuse

Classic Skins - instead of getting a TD to put the game out of reach they settle for a field goal just so the Bears can score a TD to tie with 30 seconds remaining :(

I guess that's better than "wet spot".

But I won't hazard a guess as to which team will get it.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | December 6, 2007 11:06 PM | Report abuse

so....3 and out on the next series for the Skins right?

they'll gain 9 and a half yards.

F Saunders for calling plays like this for Collins and not for Soup.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 6, 2007 11:14 PM | Report abuse

I dont think the playcalling has to do with the QB as much as it has to do with the fact that this coaching staff finally gets it...12 game into the season.

Of course I want a TD but here is where you can run it, take the FG and the worse that can happen is they score a TD and you go to OT.

JC here would force it and throw an INT they drive down and we lose

The only thing I'm confused about on that last drive is why we didn't kick a field goal. It was definitely close enough.

Posted by: farstriker | December 6, 2007 11:21 PM

The series ended prematurely. They weren't expecting Betts to hold on to the ball. He was only supposed to get them in the center of the field and Gibbs was going to kick the FG on second down.

So Collins occupies that sweet spot between old and busted but super-smart and young and strong and mistake-prone. Awesome. And most importantly the coach calls plays that maximize his talents, such as they are.

That is EXACTLY what good teams do. Patriots, Colts, Packers... They get aggressive when it is third and short or third and medium. They know that there is a chance of getting a turnover, but your odds are better of completing the pass and winning the game.

Pretty impressive effort to finish the game despite some horrific injuries. Campbell, Smoot, Cooleyand the walking wounded (Sellers; ARE; Moss). Smoot and Cooley sucked it up and returned. That's manning up and playing "Redskin football." Even though the run game was not there, the O line protected Collins and he ran the offense well and protected the ball. Playcalling was decent and there was no evidence of curling up in a fetal position and waiting for the game to end and playing not to lose. The defense was mostly sound with some tough sledding when the Bears starting isolating Hester on the replacement CB for Smoot. We had to wait for a rash of serious injuries and late in the season to finally see this? Why?

THAT was the Kansas City Chiefs offense we all so desparately looked forward to when Al Saunders signed up 3 years ago.

Todd Collins may not have a strong arm, but he's DAMN ACCURATE, and doesn't force any bad throws like JC sometimes do.

Todd Collins reminds me of a generic equivalent version of a healthy Trent Green
in KC in the way he runs the offense.

NOW I'm interested to see what happens rest of the way, GO SKINS!!

I think you have to drink a lot of koolaide to think of Collins as an upgrade over JC, and this team is still not good enough to dominate anyone. But they have a chance against each of the other teams they play.

Is JC out for the year? After watching Collins run this offense the way it should be run...NOT holding the ball too long and fireing that freakin pigskin out of there before WRs make their cuts and just flat out knowing the offense better...spreading the ball aound and not only taken it in on a nice turnover but also leading the team on a long drive into the redzone and closing the deal was very nice..Best the offense has looked all year...Once again I ask...Is JC out for the year?????? :)

Posted by: leevi98 | December 7, 2007 12:40 AM | Report abuse

leevi, you're asking a bunch of bloggers????
Yeah, based on where his kneecap was, he's going to be immobile for a couple of weeks. If nothing was torn, who knows? But the real good news would be if his ligaments are ok. That would really limit the downtime.

Posted by: daggar | December 7, 2007 12:46 AM | Report abuse

Most of all, I'm happy everyone in the Redskins organization gets to enjoy a win this evening. The look on Joe Gibbs' face at the press conference was a beautiful combination of happiness, pride, satisfaction and weariness.

This team as earned a few days rest, and deserves to be praised and respected during those days.

The win is bittersweet with Campbell suffering the dislocated patella. But it is too early to make any predicitions on his return. he're's what I found out about his injury:

If an athlete suffers a patella dislocation that does not spontaneously reduce (go back into place), it is rather obvious to detect. The patella will be laying near the outside of the knee joint. However, it is quite common for the patella to spontaneously reduce. Many times the athlete will straighten his/her leg inadvertently after the injury, causing the patella to reduce.

If the patella has been reduced, the athlete will present with increased pain, swelling, and loss a decrease in range of motion of the knee. The swelling may be great enough as to make the patella "disappear." Due to the swelling, the patella may also feel, when pressed straight down, as if it is a boat floating in water.

The swelling is due to tearing of the ligaments on the medial side of the patella. This swelling is located inside of the joint, accounting for the patella feeling like a floating boat.

There's more here:
http://athleticadvisor.com/Injuries/LE/Knee/Patella/patella_dislocations.htm

Coach Gibbs said during the post game press conference that there doesn't appear there's any ligament damage for JC.

I can't see Campbell playing anymore this season.

And as good as Collins looked tonight...please bear in mind that back up QBs generally look good when they are forced into action during a game....the other team has not game planned for the backup. Plus Collins is not mobile....Strahan on Umenyiora will be all over him.

Posted by: Lisa | December 7, 2007 12:59 AM | Report abuse

You're absolutely right, Lisa. They are probably licking their chops at the prospect of getting at what is basically a stationary target.

Posted by: JustMe | December 7, 2007 1:03 AM | Report abuse

I think Campbell is done for the year...This is what I found from a guy on a med site that had the same injury

"The kneecap (patella) can become dislocated only if the ligaments that hold it in place tear to some degree. This tearing can be hardly anything or the ligaments may be completely torn. Cracks in the kneecap are also possible. While minor dislocations require only a light brace and a month or so healing time, more severe cases require surgery. In my case, the knee was quite severly dislocated, but not badly enough to need surgery.

Once your knee is set back into the correct location, your leg will probably put in a brace or, more rarely, a plaster cast. This may cover almost the whole leg or just the knee area, depending on the severity of the dislocation. "

Interested to hear about Thomas and Wade... would be nice to see those guys back so we can, you know, like, maybe establish a running game. You know, to complement the whiz-bang high-octane Saunders offense, which finally has its field general in Todd Collins.

Posted by: Lisa | December 7, 2007 12:59 AM

This is true in some cases Lisa...But I would have to say in Collins' case not entirely true...Most if not all backups have not been in the offense for over 7 years and know it inside out...Collins knows where everybody is and gets the ball out very fast even before wrs make cuts...It's not that he is joe montana...its that he knows the system VERY well...most QBs at his age have the banged up body from the years...with his knowledge in his case...He has not but has the knowledge...I saw the RBs getting the screens just like it was for holmes and johnson in the past in KC..I think Collins is very capable for winning out...

This blog makes me laugh. Instead of enjoying a satisfying victory, most fans here are coming up with medical verdicts, crowning Todd Collins the 2008 starter, or worrying about the Giants DE's.

All things in time. The Redskins won tonight. I'm enjoying it.

How about that Yoder touchdown? Great catch, way to hold on to the ball, and crushed his way to the end zone. The last two minutes of the first half were the best part of the season for me.

Believe me, I sort of desperately want to believe in Collins, and I love that we won this game tonight thanks to his arm (and the play calling! and the D!), and I want to win all the rest of our games... but the hyperbole up here is ridiculous.

There's a reason Collins has only played like nine games in fourteen seasons or whatever. He is not really good. Career backup, journeyman clipboard jockey. I mean, hail to him as much as to any of the Skins, but I can't muster up much interest in a QB controversy over here.

Somebody who saw the game...how did Thomas look? Who else played OL?

Throw us a bone.

mugamack, I agree that the blog has been a great source of laughs tonight. Wow, and it was fun to kind of enjoy the game in good humor AND get a win. Wow.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 7, 2007 1:17 AM | Report abuse

Thomas looked like... well he still has this indescribable presence...
to be honest, unless his last name is spelled "FABINI", I didn't see him play.

Posted by: daggar | December 7, 2007 1:18 AM | Report abuse

Thomas didn't seem to be in the middle of the plays much.

Heyer made a couple of errors, but overall had a decent night - seems to be growing.

Basicall, the OL looked great in pass blocking and horrible in run blocking, with a few notable exceptions.

Sellers looked HYPED for the game and it was great to see him back out there.

Smoot was playing surprisingly tough again, prior to his injury. Did anyone else notie he had a cheerleader looking out for him on the sidelines? What is it with that guy and the cheerleaders? We need Cooley's wife to write a guest blog and explain.

Nate, I'm with you - Todd Collins might just be able to pull it off - Lord, I hope so. But this is the same guy who stunk it up in the pre-season last year when given an opportunity. It's way to early to have faith.

skins are officially done this season. Assuming Campbell is jacked up, now they're done for next season also, if not more.

No way Snyder's millions will lure Cowher now.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 7, 2007 1:32 AM | Report abuse

I'm wondering...early in the season everyone was saying how JC was working on quicker releases and timing, yadida, yadida, yadida...he had a few good games, then methinks they (coaches etc) stopped working on the basics and became too focused on the tactical game.

Poise is great, JC has it that's for sure. But later in the season, quick release = fumble.

Of course there were times he was running for his life.

Collens is probably not a big upgrade.

If you watched the game JC set a recored for passes in 3 games and got hurt. That is one reason we try to run some of the time.

CP is still the man just needs some holes.

JC will be back next year for sure if the injury is what we think it is.

Playoffs

The Cards and NO seem to be the main 6 seed compitition. Lions and Eagles have very hard teams coming up and they suck. We play the Vikings and we have to win out anyway. So if we win out we will have the tie brake on them for sure.

2 road wins and a gimme vs Dallas resting there starters. 25 percent chance.

10 percent Cards or NO win out too.

Did you guys notice the LL is hitting even harder with ST passing. It makes me said every time I see it.

I just wanted to chime in on what someone else said about this being a Gibbs vs Saunders instead of Collins vs. Campbell.

When we were moving on Offense, NFL network showed Saunders up in the coaching booth with a coy smile on his face and making a comment to another and laughing.

I think (as we all have) there is a serious disconnect between Gibbs and his assistants. Grilliams with the 10 men thing and the obvious difference in play calling for campbell vs collins.

I dont know is Jason cant or wont throw that seam pass to Betts for the td or if it is strickly play calling, but I have not seen that this year and how many times have we been in goal to go and come away with 3?

That was a good quick pass 3 step drop in response to the blitz. Maybe JC hasnt picked it up yet, but he needs to.

I do believe I said we would win 24 -13 or 24 - 16 (cant remember)... just to toot my own horn.

Zebra,

The funny thing is Weird Al was on 980am after the game, and he claimed that they didn't change the plays they called with Collins in the game. But, as you noted, no one has seen that play to Betts for the TD in the 4th quarter, even though there have been plenty of instances where it would have been useful.

Great win, but at the expense of Campbell, not sure how much I enjoy it.

Cooley had another huge game, Springs was great as well.

There was someone above whom mentioned that Collinsworth stated that our offensive line is the lightest in the NFL. That right there is a problem. We need to spend 2 out of our 3 first round picks on 'road grader', 'block out the sun' type of offensive lineman.

Say what you want about Portis, but he had absolutely NOTHING to work with last night. He was trying to make chicken salad with chicken-bleep.

Hated seeing Campbell go down...gosh that was upsetting....

Posted by: gregmarino88 | December 7, 2007 8:06 AM | Report abuse

Drew Henson was the starter over tom brady. Collins is 35 - 37, Brady is more than 4 years younger, right?

Posted by: Zebraskins | December 7, 2007 8:11 AM | Report abuse

Hmph. Now I realize that it's not really all that important for the Post to get, say, the facts right, or use words with the correct meanings, but if you want my $0.35, you're going to have to do better than a "Mr. Steinberg", who claims that, with the score 24-13, "They needed a touchdown and extra point to tie the game." The ten-point touchdown was only tried for a couple of years in the 90s, and the NFL actually went back and erased all records of it when they went back to the traditional six point touchdown. Showing just how powerful the NFL is, they've also erased all human memory of that sad, unhappy time.
And then there's a "Mr. LaToucanfora". If "The pass-heavy drive was in stark contrast to most in the second half this season, with Gibbs often eschewing a conservative approach", and eschewing is used in the standard English vernacular of "to avoid or stay away from", well, let's just claim that that is a unique perspective.
Perhaps "espousing" is what we were looking for Up Here.

Let's be clear:

Redskins have not beat a team this year which has (today) a winning record.

Combined record of teams Redskins have beat is 25-47.

Until you beat a team with a winning record, you really don't have much to talk about.

Zebra -- Collins started for Michigan in 93 and 94, taking over from Elvis Grbac. Griese was a walk-on in 93 (redshirted), placeholder in 94, and took over from Scott Driesbach in mid 95. Won the National Championship in 97 as a Senior, with Sophmore Tom Brady somewhere around #10 on the Michigan depth chart.
At one point, Michigan QBs in the NFL were: Harbaugh, Grbac, Collins, Driesbach (with a whole six college starts under his belt), Griese, and Brady -- with only "Demetrious" Brown missing from the line...

Obvie Todd 'make me a tom' Collins ain't the second coming of Sammy Baugh but gawd darn he knows the 700 pages, makes quick reads and now for 3 weeks is our man!

I believe Wierd Al when he says they were the same plays, the diff is that Collins is more comfortable makig the hot reads. That TD to Betts wasn't a new lay its just Collins knew how to hit it fast against the blitz. J-Cam needs experience to do that.

One thing Collins did that I liked was that he hit cats in stride last night, which resulted in everything from the TDs, to CP's screen and the 20 yard plays t WRs....

CL you NAILED it. Collins has that clock in his head, he knows that when he's on step #5 of his drop-back, he needs to be throwing the ball. JC hadn't gotten to this point yet, he was 'getting there' but wasn't there yet. This offense is all about timing, throwing the ball prior to the WR/TE making their cuts.

How much can one team endure through the course of one season?? Unbelievable.....

I have to say, it is a weird feeling expecting the Redskins to lose and having them win. Much more enjoyable than the "expect them to win and then they lose" emotion.

I think our problem is coaching and NOT QB play. I'm not calling for anyone's head or anything, but I just think there is apparent disagreement when it comes to the game plan and play calling.

I can't put my finger on it yet, but there is definately something up. Maybe its as simple as we have been protecting our franchise QB and bringing him along slowly. I just don't know yet.

I loved the result and all I ask of this team as that we get 1 more win. I think it will be extremely difficult given our upcoming schedule and current injury issues but I hesitate to say its impossible.

I will say this...anyone who thinks the Cowboys are going to "let us have one" are out of their Fing minds!!!

I thought Collins looked like exactly what you guys needed at the end; a cool head, with no real downside to him screwing up as no-one expected him to win anyway. Maybe JC just feels the pressure too much at the moment as people seem to have put this all on his shoulders lately.

NCICURN, I touched on that above, and I think it was more Collins getting the ball out quicker than JC does, and trusting where he was throwing the ball. TCollins seemed to go through his reads quicker, and went to his checkdown quicker as well.

I now believe it was Saunders (along with Gibbs) not yet trusting Jason to make certain plays (thus the conservativeness). Saunders felt very comfortable with Collins - thus the change.

For future reference, when the overnight forecast is 25 degrees and its 33 at 3pm ... don't start tailgating at 4. It was BITTER cold in SEVEN layers. First half was fairly painful to watch, esp. the missed FGs (Robby Gould is actually supposed to be good in the cold ... but it was COLD last night). Then by the time the Griese-Collins shootout got going, the D started looking great, which inspired some surprisingly good pass offense by the Skins. [I'm not sure why I'm saying any of this given how many of you probably were able to catch the game.] Doughty came up with a HUGE game and no serious mistakes. From what I could tell, Laron is the new free safety and Doughty is the new strong safety. I'm guessing that free safety is a harder position to play concentration-wise. The crowd (the lower bowl at least) never sat down ... in part b/c peeps were back into a football groove (post-Sean Taylor), in part b/c the seats were freezing. FedEx staff had not cleared the snow off the seats. GREAT second half (it occurred to me that I had not seen that this season). I'm pretty sure my yell at the Bears QB is what made him lose his concentration. Hester is who everyone thought Reggie Bush was supposed to be.

Lisa, I tend to agree that Saunders just let Collins throw b/c of his comfortableness with Collins.

I think the Skins maybe are figuring out that a game plan does NOT require a different approach in the second half ... and that what works in the first half CAN work in the second half.

DC, I tend to agree, that Saunders trusted Collins, but he did so, because he KNEW that TC was going to throw the ball no matter what, and not take a sack or potentially fumble. JC hasn't gotten to this point yet. He's getting closer, but not there yet.

And, I agree about the coaches not trusting JC with those throws but I am of the opinion that you have to give him a chance. Interceptions are a part of the game with a quarterback on the learning curve. Haven't we had numerous examples of those quarterbacks who are among the elite in this league experiencing similar problems early on. I, for one, have been on the side of allowing Jason to learn from his mistakes. Probably because I just like him. :)

Lisa, I believe it was Golston who blocked that field goal. Not that it matters. Or as Collinsworth called him:

"Cedric"

It was Gumbel Greg, and he called him "Cedric Glodston"...

Gumbel is THE WORST commentator I have ever heard, he's just offal. And we used to have David Coleman in the UK who had a whole industry set up to list his mistakes....

I personally believe that all US Americans should be given at least three updates from Jasno today, enough to clear the "Jason looks like he might be okay (UPDATED)" entry from the screen.

Does anyone have new news on JC?

Welcome, kitdat, jspaceman and limawax!

People make it sound like Collins and the Redskins were unstoppable in the second half. Looked to me like the Redskins were more lucky than good, often having to check down, often on third down - the porous Bears D had as much to do with Redskins success as Collins having free reign.

Couldn't be happier that the Skins won, but people acting like Collins was a 1991 Mark Rypien out there are deluded.

ESPN is reporting a dislocated patella tendon for Campbell. That's not even medically possible, right? A patella tendon ruptures, a patella dislocates?

NFL network is replaying the game right now.

Never mind--my kid got a hold of the remote and somehow got the game started off the DVR. Dang, I knew he was a genius!!

RC, LOL, thats just bad. How about his call on the the field goal attempt?? Just classic.

He's saying it was good, meanwhile the screen is showing both refs in the end-zone calling no good.

You know, in Green Bay, at Lambeau Field, when it snows, the whole community turns out and cleans the snow off of the field and the seats and the whole stadium.

Perhaps it "Takes A Village" to raise a football team?

Snyder would charge for the privilege of cleaning snow off his stadium's seats.

I believe Saunders when he says 'he calls the same plays' for both JC and TC. The difference is how each executes the play. TC is waaaay ahead of JC in comprehension of the system, so he knows exactly where to throw in any situation, plus his throws were DEAD ON yesterday (no throws behind the receiver or overthrows them)

and Gumble/Collinsworth is the worst gamecalling duo I've seen in a loong time, they make the Sam Rosen/Brian Baldinger team look like the 'A' team of football broadcasters, lol.

Nate, you're right - I can see the promo campaign now - "Special Winter Wonderland Tours of Fed-Ex... BYOSS" - (Bring your own snow shovel)

LOL RC, "offal" versus "awful" - both apply, though! I can't STAND Bryant Gumbel. His brother Greg is SOOOO much better. Bryant couldn't call a correct formation in a play-by-play to save his life. I can't recall him calling a single formation last night. And don't get me started on his constant name-butchering and calling the wrong players. Terrible. He is a piss-poor excuse for a play-by-play announcer. You would think that NFL Network could do better, maybe even lure Pat Summerall out of retirement. Heck, I'd take Kenny Albert and Daryl Johnston over Bryant and Cris Collinsworth, and I think Kenny Albert's a jerk!
