Campbell fires back at Portis

Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell blasted Clinton Portis for his poor work ethic and lack of understanding about "what real leadership is," responding to Portis' comments earlier in the day about Campbell.

Campbell, selected one of six team captains by teammates the last two seasons, called out Portis for putting himself above the team and, in his opinion, an overall lack of professionalism Portis has exhibited in Campbell's five seasons in Washington.

"How is he going to say I'm not a leader?" Campbell said in a lengthy phone interview. "I mean, that's just not true. To me, that's somebody who shows that they don't know what a real leader is. A leader is not someone who leads by the wrong example. A leader is someone who is trying to do the right thing and trying to lead by example, and not just [being] about themselves. There's a reason guys get selected as captains, and there's a reason guys don't get selected as captains. Obviously, he doesn't have the respect of the locker room to be a captain. For someone to try to take a shot at me at the end of the season, after they haven't even been around, only speaks about their character anyways.

"There have been a lot of things I could have come out and said. But I never went out of my way to make those things known. I never wanted those things to leave the locker room because it's no one else's business. And for those things to be said, questioning my character and questioning my leadership, I think that's not the way to go, especially when you're supposed to be a team guy. Is that being a good teammate? If that's the case, why is no one questioning my leadership and everyone is questioning his work ethic? Everyone looks at that. I'm not going to get into an argument; I don't even like talking about stuff like this because it makes no sense and it doesn't help the team, but I'm going to speak my mind on it when this is what he's saying about me."

Portis's seemingly cozy relationship with owner Daniel Snyder has stirred resentment in the locker room because he rarely practices. Campbell is "not ready for that situation," Portis said of the quarterback's captaincy. "I think Jason has enough trouble in getting the plays in and worrying about this, compared to controlling the huddle and making sure, 'Oh, we do this and we do that.' But you go and vote Jason Campbell [as captain] -- you know Jason Campbell ain't go and tell the coach, 'Well, we need to do this or we need to do that,' or 'This is how the players want it.' The only person I think would do it is London Fletcher."

Campbell said the comment pointed to Portis' obliviousness to the facts, Campbell said.

"We [all the captains] do go to the coaches. It's not our fault if the coaches decide they're not going to [do what the captains suggest]," Campbell said. "But we have some guys who go above the coaches. And that's another problem. You have some players who are not team players.

"They don't do the things teammates do to help each other. And then at the end of the season, when it's been a hard season, you want to point fingers at other people because you're upset about your own shortcomings? You're upset because you get into it with your teammates because of what you do?"

During a 16-13 victory Oct. 4 over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Portis went to coaches in an effort to have Pro Bowl fullback Mike Sellers demoted for what Portis deemed to be poor blocking. Sellers eventually confronted Portis during a heated locker-room exchange in which no punches were thrown, team sources said, but Mike Sellers essentially told Portis his teammates did not respect him because of his me-first approach.

"Not one time have I come out and made any excuses about anything with my situation," Campbell said. "I never do anything to try to hurt my teammates. Some people need to stop being 'me' guys and start being 'we' guys. And another thing, and I want you to write this, too, how does he even know what's going on with our team?

"How's he [going to] question anything when for those four or five weeks before he was on IR [the season-ending injured-reserve list], he never even came around. He wasn't with us. He was never at practice. Who does he think was holding the offense together? He should go ask the coaches and the players if he wants to know. But he wasn't around to do that. He doesn't know anything about leadership."

Campbell said he was disappointed about airing private team matters in public, and especially frustrated that Portis would verbally attack him with the Redskins apparently close to making a long-anticipated announcement that former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has been hired as their next head coach. This is not the type of thing Snyder, General Manager Bruce Allen and Shanahan need to be confronted with at a time like this, but Portis left him no choice, Campbell said.

"You've got guys out there working their butts off, guys out there practicing and doing everything they need to do to prepare for Sundays, and you see him over there getting special treatment," Campbell said of Portis. "What does that say about him? I go out, I get beat down on Sundays, and I still have to go out and practice and get ready for games. And that's what your supposed to do.

"If you're about your team and trying to help your team, if you're not about yourself, you deal with the pain and that's what you do. What makes it so different for others? I mean, this is what's wrong with our team. Instead of a guy coming to you if he has a problem, instead of going to talk to the person, you go speak out loud in public. How does that help? How does that help the team?"

Good for Jason. Sometimes guys need to be put in their place. Portis needs to go. Only thing I ask, Jason...let us all see some of that fire on Sundays. Light into guys when they need a push. Don't settle for the nonsense that happened this year. I, for one, want to see Campbell signed to a multi-year deal. If the skins want to draft a new QB to groom, then do it. But I think in the right system and behind a solid line, JC will flourish.

People might question Campbell as a player (or as a Redskin), but he has given us no reason to doubt his character. He's got this personal credibility about him. I would believe him over CP.

Portis is a punk. I used to respect him and how hard he ran and blocked but this is the last straw. I hope Shannahan drops him like a ton of bricks. Gets Okung in the draft to protect Jason and we can all go on with our lives.
Portis doesn't deserve to be our all time leading rusher. Let him piss & moan somewhere else.

Good for you JC. I am finally done with Portis. Cerrato is gone now and hopefully Danny will let Allenahan run the show which means giving Portis his walking papers. Trade him or take the cap hit because 1.) he'll end up pussing out in 2010 and 2.) Shannahan has proven he could turn Ganther and Marcus Mason into a productive duo.

Trade away our dead weight into a few draft picks, draft a few offensive linemen and give JC another year. We've seen the guy get better every year, make plays in the pocket when he has time and even on the run and now he's showing us he's tired of Portis' bu!!$h!t and is ready to take on some leadership duties.

In any event, with the state of our beloved Redskins, Allenahan is by far an improvement. Start building now and we could be a powerhouse within 3 years. I'll take a few more sub par seasons if it means a Lombardi or two by 2020. Hopefully, Danny can wait.

See you all in August!!!

When looking at Jason's career he continues to grow as a player and a leader. After reading his comments I want the guy back. That shows true leadership, we need to ship Portis out of here.

Jason needs a coach that will continue to grow his career and everyone needs to compare Jason to Jason not Rogers, Cutler and other QB's. I have a son that plays QB and he had issues his first 2 years and now is a star QB with a promising future the position is tough to play and the majority of the people that say bad things about this guy does not know what it takes to be QB. Will he be great QB we will not know until his career is over.

It is funny that know one is saying anything about Eli who completely shut down at the end of the season.

Jason if you read this, stay positive and keep god first and brush all of the haters off!! I hope you are back but if not I hope you have successful career where ever you go.

Portis I will send my Portis Jersey back to you with a BIG Loser written all over it..

Later..

ITS ABOUT TIME JASON.

I know youre reading these comments because you are obviously looking for sympathy in your outburst...really man this is the type of leadership thats needed during the season.

We werent there so we dont know. Maybe you tried. But when you make a comment like "this is whats wrong with our team" - if you didnt try to correct it during the season, its the old adage - if you're not part of the solution you are part of the problem.

Most everyone agrees with you, I just hope you made your stance clear internally to the other captains, coaches, Vinny, Snyder, whoever during the season so that this could be rectified when it counted.

If you did and it fell on deaf ears, shame on them. If you didnt, shame on you. But know this - a leader would find a way, any way, to get this problem solved.

Good for Jason! I admire him for his professionalism but it's really nice to see that when someone throws him under the bus he'll fight back. To me CP, like so many other players in this league, is tarnishing his legacy. I've loved having him here and I think he's been a fantastic player in the past but his time is done and it's time to move on.

Posted by: JulzDC | January 5, 2010 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: scampbell1975 | January 5, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

All Jason had to do was finish it with a little WWE action. "Oh Clinton, if you're not down with that, I've got two words for ya...SUCK IT!" Campbell's been a composed guy and not taken shots at teammates, while getting the crap beaten out of him because he can't get a decent O-line to protect him, and he kept getting up and playing until he physically couldn't...and then as soon as he could, he got back out there. I wouldn't want Portis to go out there with a concussion, but his preparation in the offseason was lousy. Kick him out, like now.

Posted by: kmcandrew | January 5, 2010 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Go ahead JC! I hope you keep that fire and come back next season with a purpose, without CP of course. Shanny didn't put up with his crap before, he better not start now. That should be in the Shanny/Snyder contract, that Snyder needs to cut his buddy buddy relationship with CP and send him packing.

I used to like Portis, that was until he upset my man Campbell. How can get Campbell mad. If he's mad then i'm mad, If he's beeinf with Portis then i'm beefing with Portis. I hope we get rid of Portis and a team with worst O-Line picks him up and pays him the minimum. Then again Portis have ben a changed man since that Sean Taylor death. I don't really think he cares that much about football anymore, just about the money and that is why he is still playing today.

This is my first post in the last twelve years of coming to this website. That is how moved I am by these comments and this story. I've always had a place in my heart for Jason, but probably would have talked myself into agreeing with any off-season decision they made concerning the QB position. Not now. If there was one thing redskins fans everywhere can take solice in this season, it's EVERYTHING this young man exuberates. Not only his character, his heart, his ethic, or his leadership, but all the above. I truly believe the fans would be thankful to keep a player who is every over used descriptive repeated time and time again when describing the type of players that are the makeup of successful NFL teams. Let's hope we won't have to wonder "what if" we gave Jason the right tools to finally accomplish for our team what he's already accomplished as a human being. If you took the time to read this, I thank you.

Hope it all works out for you #17. I've always been an apologist. Even though I like what you've said, I'm sad to see how bad this team has been functioning on the inside. I really respected CPs blood and guts running during the Gibbs era. Things regressed with Zorn. Ah well, happy new year!

Clinton, Clinton, Clinton.

Say good-bye.

You "defended" yourself because Wynn, Daniels, and Cartwright called you out...unofficially. But you went after the one cat on the team who gained followers and admirers each Sunday because he was out there.

Your concussion is a serious problem, to be sure, but you smelled like rotting chicken from the season's first snap.

Time for you to say good-bye.

I hope Portis gets shipped out and Ladell Betts is given a chance to start next season while Allen/Shanahan search for a long-term RB.

Ladell is a great runner and a classy guy. Give him a chance to get into a groove and everyone will be pleasantly surprised.

And make that 1st round pick an offensive tackle.

I agree with what was said earlier, if this was not said during the season, it should have. If Jason waited until now, then he missed an opportunity. That said, I couldn't agree more with what Jason said. It's clear that Portis is a problem. His nonsense the past two years is ridiculous. I am not insinuating that Portis is not a tough guy on game days. He guts it out just like anyone but the difference between champions and chumps are guys that approach their job 7 days a week in a professional manner and it's clear that Portis comes up short here. I'm glad Jason finally stood up for himself. He needed to. I was almost mad for him reading the previous post.

Portis is too rich and too old to ever play like he did in his prime, but all you guys dumping on him forget that for the last 5 years proceeding this one; he was all we had to cheer about. Campbell is a class guy with great character, but so is my brother in law; and he does not have the goods to be a good pro QB, if he did, we would have seen it by now. If we want this team to be competitive, we must get rid of both of them.

Posted by: elderdave1 | January 5, 2010 8:59 PM | Report abuse

Most everyone agrees with you, I just hope you made your stance clear internally to the other captains, coaches, Vinny, Snyder, whoever during the season so that this could be rectified when it counted.
--------------------------------------------

I would venture to guess that Zorn and his assistants tried to deal with Portis early on, only to have Snyder and Cerrato undermine them. I blame Snyder for allowing Portis to get out of control and for not putting him in his place.

Snyder should have backed up Zorn when Portis complained. He should have demanded accountability when the players (whose multimillion dollar checks he was signing) were coming to practice two hours late. But he didn't and actively sided with Portis, allowing this situation to fester and get out of control.

A key test going forward is whether Snyder will allow Allen and Shanahan to enforce negative consequences when players refuse to practice. The quotation from Haynesworth stating that the team allowed players to come two hours late to practice is a stunning indictment of the team's practices. The team could have easily won several more games had they been practicing and unified.

The bottom line is that Shanahan will not be able to coach effectively unless Snyder and Allen back his decisions to sanction players like Portis if/when they fail to work hard or if they otherwise negatively impact the team. Even a coach like Bill Parcells or Mike Ditka wouldn't be able to coach effectively if upper management constantly undermined them.

The first job for both Allen and Shanahan is to determine who wants to work hard and win--and who just wants to coast and get paid. Getting rid of the problem players has to be the top priority above all. Getting rid of players like Portis will alone bring in at least two or three wins.

Is this Portis' way of trying to force the team to deal him? That he has the audacity to criticize Jason who got beat down all season for his team and never complained once makes Portis a real jackass and I hope he reads this. Am I the only one who believes that Portis never tried or intended to come back after his concussion? He quit the team like the dog he is. He's been a premadonna ever since he arrived and is one of the biggest cancers on this team. Allen and Shanny have to get rid of this guy if they want the team to go forward and improve. Kudos for you for standing up for a change Jason. It's time to call out the other losers on this team like Landry, Hall, Rogers, Sellers, and even Haynesworth who was treated special. Get rid of these roaches.

Way to stand up for yourself Campbell, but you still gotta go. No doubt, you have great character. You and Zorn would be great coaching kids. But neither of you are leaders of men. You never took this team and made it yours. Bernie Kosar didn't win any championships but he led his teams. Maybe Portis calling-you-out will be the best thing that ever happened to you. I hope you get another chance to be-the-man just not on the Redskins

Way to go JC... It is definitely appropriate to defend yourself from this garbage...

I know you will / you have missed CP blocking for you on pass plays over the past several years, but it's clear that both of you will never be in the same huddle again!

And who says that JC is going to WANT to sign here again. He's gonna be the hottest free agent QB out there and if you were he, would you want to come back to this mess???

BTW: Where are the Jason Campbell haters tonite?

Usually, they light up this blog asking for the same kind of leadership and emotion displayed in this thread.

Maybe they are home wiping their tears with that #26 jersey.

If not wiping their tears, maybe they're using it to wipe something else.

When I discuss JC and I state he's not an elite QB, makes slow reads, and doesn't deliver the ball accurately enough or on time often enough it has NOTHING to do with hate. That phrase is so tired, let it rest. He is classy though and I'm glad he finally said something. He and Zorn, in fact the whole team were hamstrung by CP and his antics. DS is culpable too.

Jason took more hits than Clinton did when he was healthy. And Clinton's a running back. Shanahan will kick his non-practicing loud mouth outta here.

Way to go Jason Campbell, I wish you would have gone off on some of your oline like this and maybe they would have played better, that being said they probably did the best they could do. I use to be a big Portis fan and was going to buy a # 26 Portis jersey about a year ago, instead I bought a # 17 Campbell jersey with the sown on #'s and glad I did. I have told you all in here who bash Jason that he is a leader and needs the tools up front to get him over the hump at the QB position and hopefully he'll get to stay and get those tools. As far as Portis, he's a big titty baby and needs his ass whipped like he was a spoiled child who misbehaves in public. Yes someone needs to put a belt on his ass.
But since he's a grown man and that want happen the next best thing is to send him packing and let some other team deal with his cry baby ass. Want practice even when he's healthy cause he's a owners pet but he'll throw someone else under the bus. Maybe big Mike Sellers should have whipped his ass, but really he wouldn't be worth getting in trouble over. I hope he is not on the team next season, trading him want bring much, but take what you can get in a trade for him as soon as possible.

If the new regime had any doubts on Portis or Campbell. Hopefully this will clear any doubts. B-Mitch and the Diesel had figured out long time ago that Portis was a cancer to this franchise. Portis is a freaking diva just like agent Zero in china town. Both of these village idoits should be chased out of town. Final verdict your honor, Portis = Out and Campbell = In.

Portis as good as he was, was never worth getting rid of Champ. RB's can always be had.

Kind of interesting with the new coach coming into town. He got rid of Portis once b4, maybe Portis saw the writing on the wall.

Its time (well past time) for players and the owner not to be friends. Owners own players play....and coaches have the POWER to control their players. Do you think Parcells, or Belechik would put up with Portis?

The Redskins (Snyder) keep players past their prime or sign them as free agents; and then wonder why they don't perform like they use to.

Clinton Princess ... oops ... Portis is a primadona, spoiled brat who thinks a lot more highly of himself than he should. Whoever heard of a guy missing half the season from a concussion. Meanwhile, Jason, for all his shortcomings, is tough as nuts and is constantly willing to put himself back into an impossible situation, taking hit after hit, while Portis is working at ... the John Thompson show. He's a punk. Send this dude packing. He's a phony.

If this team had to have an egomaniacal jerk, I'd rather have T.O. At least he's not lazy - he works extremly hard - and he's not delicate as a daisy - he came back from a severe injury - and he still is more productive than Portis.

Dan, you did the right thing a couple of weeks ago in cutting your buddy Vinny for the sake of the team and its devoted fans. Let the new management do what they need to do with Portis - send him to whoever has room on their roster for an aging, lazy, self-centered jerk who thinks he still has gifts that are no longer with him.

Jerome, please go back to Southeast so we can stop dealing with your little temper tantrums.

JC is right in defending himself but it dosent change the fact that we need to go in another direction under center. I can't take another season of this dude dumping it off because he can't see the field. He's beyond boring and so far proven he's a backup at best.

It's time to get some real leaders on this team. I've been a big critic of JC all year and I still haven't changed my opinion that he's only an average QB at best, even if you give him a decent front line. I give all kudos to JC for his physical toughness and being a first class act. He has character and I know he has to make his parents proud. But JC lacks in the mental toughness and acuity that the great QBs have. In his 3 years of starting, I kept waiting for that one defining moment where he led his team from the brink of defeat to victory. That moment never happened. His last play of the season was a hail mary out of bounds. Out of bounds!!!!! Cmon, Jason! The team might be forced to keep him, but Jason can't be great until he sheds some of his meekness and decides that leading isn't just about being a nice guy but finding a way to lead your men when it counts the most.

Oh, yeah, Portis. One more thing. You're not only slow, ineffective, old and lazy, but you're a FUMBLER. On behalf of all your former fans in Washington, please go to Dallas, New York or Philly. Once Shanahan starts those fumble recovery drills next season, we could use your help in improving our takeaway ratio.

When Campbell fired back ,was it overthrown like some of his football's?Did the comment slip through Portis's hands like the footballs?

Posted by: lnyk | January 5, 2010 9:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't think Campbell should come back but I like how he said "we." Portis was always about "me.' Insecure, prima donna. I think he also knows he is out. Shanahan and Allen will jettison that fool next week, if they can. However, if Campbell is let go, you know Snyder is in control. He hates Campbell. But if Campbell is offered like a one year deal with no agreement he will start (he has to compete), Allen & Shanahan are in control. Shanahan is the decider anyway. Allen is the money guy, the salary cap guy, the logistics/facility guy. Shanahan will do the player selecting.

If CP saw the results of this poll, it wouldn't matter, he is that deluded. What is important is that Allen & Shanahan see it.

Gibbs was dead center perfect in drafting JC. JC should be the personification of the new Redskins, a hard worker, ready to fight tooth and nail for his team.

Later..

Jason showed incredible control throughout the year. What did you want him to say during the year? Start a ruckus over playcalling? No Offensive line? Take on Snyder who is trying to trade for Cutler and draft Sanchez? IN A CONTRACT YEAR?

He has been caught in a web of disfunction since he got here. This is his fourth offensive system with the Redskins, I think. You keep your chin up, JC and keep doing the right things in life. Keep learning and keep improving. I see JC here for two more years and going somewhere else and being VERY successful. Just long enough for Shanahan to groom some rookie after JC has absorbed more beatings with a marginally improved O Line next year.

Oh, and who didnt know Clinton Portis was a TOOL?

If any of you think for one minute that any of this fire from Soup will translate to any fire on the field, you are sadly mistaken. He just doesn't have it. I so hope that he is gone and we can start over with another QB whoever that may be.

I predict that John Riggins all-time Redskins rushing record will remain intact.
I predict that the bump on Cliton Portis' head will only make him dumber and even less literate.
I predict Cliton Portis will continue to preface every statement with "I ain't never.." only in another city.
I predict Southeast Jerome, Sheriff Gonna Getcha, Coach Janky Panky and Choo Choo are going to follow your sorry ass right out of town (and Agent Zero and Hibachi won't be far behind)
And I predict that Russ Grimm will once again be overlooked as head coach of the redskins..
No offense to Mike Shanahan but CAN WE GET RUSS GRIMM BACK HERE PLEASE???!!!!!

Three weeks into this season, Redskin's nation was already in need for massive doses of anti-depressants. It wasn't the record. It was the amazing underachievement of the team's "stars" such as Portis.

Towards the end of the year, there was a flicker of hope and optimism. Once again, it it wasn't about the record or the scoreboard at the end of games. No, the hope came from the incredible over achievement by players no one had ever heard of before at positions like running back.

The ultimate responsibility for a player underachieving lies with the player himself. But it also flows up to Zorn, Vinnie and Snyder.

Portis owes an apology to Campbell, his team mates and the fans. Here's hoping that the Allen-Shanahan era means not only regime change but a culture change as well.
