Campbell will study Shanahan's playbook despite absence from minicamp

Although quarterback Jason Campbell declined to attend the voluntary minicamp, he has studied the plays the offense will run throughout the three-day session that is scheduled to begin around 10 a.m. today at Redskins Park, two people familiar with the situation said late Thursday night.

The Redskins recently sent Campbell, who has left town for a few days, the offensive script for the camp in an effort to keep him on pace with his teammates despite his absence, the sources said. Although players have said Coach Mike Shanahan's version of the West Coast offense is more sophisticated than what the Redskins used the past two seasons under Jim Zorn, some of the plays are similar, and both are word-based systems.

Apparently, Campbell is familiar enough with the new stuff that he should be able to catch up fairly quickly, or at least be up to speed by the next voluntary three-day minicamp that begins May 7. That is, if Campbell is still on the Redskins' roster by then.

The widespread belief is that the Redskins will trade Campbell during the draft for a low pick. Shanahan has said the Redskins plan to bring back Campbell unless they get fair compensation for their former first-round pick and starter for three-plus seasons. It seems unlikely, however, that the Redskins would keep new starter Donovan McNabb, Campbell, Rex Grossman and possibly a rookie quarterback on the roster.

If Campbell still is with the team after the draft, he will report to the next minicamp and participate fully in the remainder of Washington's offseason program, the sources said. It was Campbell, not Shanahan, who decided it would be best for Campbell to stay away from the complex this weekend. But Campbell gave Shanahan his word he would show up for everything after the first minicamp if he's not traded.

Redskins Shock The World !!!

Draft Clausen @ #4

Cleveland wants him too--so they can't trade down

We get an OT with a trade?

Possibly Jammal Brown(saints) ?

AH for Detroit high 3rd

Campbell for Buffalo high 5th

Clausen will be a great pro!

Shanny steps down in 2-3 years and turns it over to Kyle--Clausen

Hopefully Big Ben is suspended for a while and the Steelers give us a 3rd or 4th for him? Maybe....

gixxer, I don't know where you've been or how much you've been drinking at this early hour, but we have Donovan McNabb here now. So the pot shots on JC are almost as unnecessary as making a trade for Ben "Rock Out With Your Cock Out" Roethlisberger.

I mean, really...between this and the "draft Clausen!" crap, you'd think Jon Gruden is running things...

From what we've seen in Houston and Denver, the passing plays acquire that the quarterback have a big, accurate arm.

Campbell has half of that.

scamp, I'm tired of the JC debate too (especially when it's all moot now that McNabb is the starter here) but bringing politics into the fold only leads to violence. That and religion belong on other blogs, IMO.

I've been in JC's corner for the most part but I just wanna see him move on so we can be done with this topic once and for all. Then when we usher AH's fat ass outta here, we might actually have some substantive discussion up here.

But somehow, I doubt it.

Posted by: brownwood26 | April 16, 2010 8:18 AM | Report abuse

The Draft is next week.

It's spread out over three days.

Imagine if you are like how Brady Quinn was, and you have to sit and wait to get picked.

Only this year, it's almost a weekend of waiting.

We still hold firm to the following predictions:

a. The team will somehow get additional picks.

b. Jason Campbell will be traded on draft day.

c. If AH is moved, a stud rookie NT will be drafted to play in a rotation of vets.

Beyond that, the roster is a work in progress.

Posted by: MistaMoe | April 16, 2010 8:21 AM | Report abuse

Word for the team's special promotions department is that the club intends to retire Campbell's number during half-time ceremonies in the season home opener -- in recognition of his outstanding teamsmanship, fine character and service to the community. The only matter still pending is Campbell's decision on when to call it quits himself -- and move on already.

The browns should trade with the rams to get Bradford.

They'll improve faster with Bradford before the rams will as they have a decent o-line to protect him.

The rams actually should take Okung and another lineman over Bradford.

Of course, what the government has to manage is abit more complex in nature than the average household.

We have wives that have a bloody breakdown once a month, the feds an army, navy, air force, retirees depending on a check, schools, graft, war, clean air, space program, disasters, scandal, drugs, the mob, illegal immigrants, parks, crime: you know, all that icky stuff that we complain about, but don't want to spend money on.

And from what I see, the government has it easier than the rest of us.

The View and do his pilates.

Soooooo, if he is good as gone.. with only six days till the Trade/Draft why bother to give him the new and/or current Kyle/Mike Shanahan playbook?
Granted, he may not read it but, come on..is this necessary?

Ummm maybe its a "plant" fake playbook. And we're going to trade him to a Conference rival? Thats it! Its Brilliant Shanahan subterfuge!

This has to be the most non-acrimonious divorce ever. JC's going to do some studying on his own; he's making promises to attend everything after the first minicamp if not traded; the Redskins FO aren't badmouthing him; in fact they are promising to bring him back if they can't get fair value. Wow. What a change having people with a modicum of common sense running things. Ultimately, the Redskins may not get much for JC but at least they haven't killed all hopes of something good coming from this.

As opposed to the old regime that went out of their way to bad mouth JC last year in their pursuit of Sanchez and Cutler.

Shanahan has been in this biz for 4 decades.. He has seen everything.. and as the saying goes.. "He has probably forgot more than when ever know about Football.." Its been said of him, as an ex-marine, he believes in testing the mettle of a man/ player.. And JC's lack of resolve and competitive fire to remain the Starter of the Redskins has only confirmed what Shanahan probably suspected when watching film on JC.. He doesnt have the competitive fire.. He never had to compete for his job and he shows the same lack of leadership on the field.
Its why Shanahan loved Cutler.. Cutler would be going batsh-t right now to compete against McNabb and prove he, Cutler, not DMac, was the better QB and that this team belongs to him. The sad thing is, JC has greater QB skills than Cutler.. But, not the fire to be a great QB leader in the NFL.. Gibbs saw the same great potential too.. but didnt see the lack of heart until it was too late..

So, you're right Tundey... This is the most "non-acrimonious divorce ever". Because Shanahan has seen what he suspected.. JC is not and never will be his type of QB....why care if he stays home? Its Snyder's player. He didnt pick him.

_____
Why??? So if he ends up on a team the Redskins play this year he will have a leg up on reading our offense to them??? Look I realize Shanahan has to at least seem like he'll take Campbell back but it would be crazy to waste 3 million on him. He has to he traded (for whatever we can get) or just released.. there is no reason to show him the playbook..

"Apparently, Campbell is familiar enough with the new stuff that he should be able to catch up fairly quickly"

How can this be? For the past four seasons I've repeatedly heard that a QB needs at least three seasons with an offense to become fully proficient with it, and that is why Campbell can't throw touch downs or move the ball in the red zone. Now Jason Reid tells me that Campbell doesn't even need to practice to become well versed in an offense.

Well I wanted JC out of here since I saw Collins out perform him in 2007. These last 2 years been nothing short of painful.
But to me as long he is a Redskin, and there is talk he might stay on.. he is fair game. Reid bringing him up every other column doesn't help either. So we agree.. the sooner JC is on Buffalo or Oakland the better.. And hey ship out AH to.. we need the draft picks...

While a long shot you make a good point.. I couldn't figure out why Shanahan talked about "grooming a young QB" then getting McNabb until I realzed Shanahan maybe only looking at 3 years here himself. But McNabb doesn't seem interested in signing a long term deal.. and with a possible lockout in 2011.. McNabb could be here only for one season.. So IF (and a big if) Shanahan thinks Clausen can be a franchise QB one day and he has already some kind of understand Kyle will be the next HC.. getting Clausen now makes some sense..

Almost. Shanahan drafted Ryan Clady at 13 to protect Cutler's blindside. And he is arguably the best LT in the game. Shanahan knows how important the line is, and LT can be difficult to patch-together without high-first-round talent.

How many of you, if your pay was not affected, would show up at work for voluntary stuff? I sure as hell wouldn't. And if my employers clearly showed me they didn't value me as an employee (whether their view was justified or not) I wouldn't do the things they asked me, but couldn't force me, to do. And don't give me that team crap. Not one guy in the NFL would put his team over himself if their organization treated them the way the Redskins have treated Jason Campbell. The worst thing he's done is not be an above average QB. Where's the sin in that? The way some "fans" have turned on him is deplorable. He always tries hard, is humble, and doesn't do or say a bunch of stupid crap that is embarassing to the organization or his team mates. He's just not a great QB with the coaching he's had thus far. That's reason enough to call him a piece crap and some of the other garbage I've read on these posts? Some of you people need help because you clearly can't differentiate between what you consider a bad QB and what is a bad person.

Posted by: largetony86 | April 16, 2010 10:32 AM | Report abuse

largetony86, I agree with a lot of the things you say, especially those classless people who disrespect Campbell with the insulting words; that is unnecessary; If you think he is a bad QB or average, there is no problem by making arguments about that, of all people Campbell deserves respect!

Jason Campbell, has been a class act. If anything the Redskins organization turned Jason into an average QB, we ruined his development, with the circus that he went thru year in and out with, with the playbook changes every year.

I was ready to see him develop under a real coach, and creative play caller Kyle, but unfortunately that is the way the business is, sometimes you gotta move on, or be patien and once you get your opportunity show them you are capable.

I would tell Jason Campbell if he happens to read this; to be patient; God is in control, if he doesn't get traded there is a reason, just continue to be humble and learn from McNabb;

Learn that play book as much as you can, if he gets his chance to play, make the most out of it and show Shannahan that you have what it takes. Believe bro!

(Not wishing anything bad on McNabb) just remember 2001, when Bledsoe carried the Pats in the playoffs, and unfortunately for him he got hurt, next thing Brady steps up and played unbelievebly and led the Pats to win the SB.

I wish he would stay, and proves to everyone that he is more than capable to excel, despite the mistakes he had in the field.
