Jason Campbell: 'I just want to enjoy my career again'

Former Redskins starting quarterback Jason Campbell today begins his first training camp as a member of the Oakland Raiders, who acquired him in an April 24 trade. Campbell left Washington after failing to meet expectations, and he welcomes a fresh start.

Before Campbell headed west, we caught up with him near Redskins Park for a question-and-answer session about his time in Ashburn.

Q. The Redskins went 12-20 the past two seasons under former coach Jim Zorn and seemed to lack stability, among other things. Was it a bad experience?

A. There was always something happening. There was always a revolving door. Last year, unfortunately, we faced a lot of injuries. You look at the year before, back in 2008, we started off hot (6-2) and finished cold (2-6). I just have to put all that behind me and learn from it, I have to just let it make me stronger, but a lot of things that happened were out of my control. I just want to get back to the point where I enjoy playing the game again. I just want to enjoy my career again.

Q. You praised Coach Mike Shanahan for quickly making needed moves to change the culture of the football operation. Do you wonder how things might have been different if Shanahan was with the Redskins when you were drafted?

A. Well, you see now they're trying to make improvements because [Shanahan] knows what it takes to win championships and the important things you have to do. It's about building a core. You have to build that core. When you see them making all these moves this offseason, you know they now know what's important. I just sit back and watch this and it's just like ... it would have been nice to have some of those same type of efforts and improvements made while I was there. But it is what it is. You move on. I still have friends on the team so I wish them the best. I wish them much success.

Q. Do you feel you were treated fairly and given a chance to succeed with the Redskins?

A. Everybody has opinions about it, and I have my opinions. I don't really publicize them or anything, but I have them. Things happen for a reason. The things that happened to me here, I carry them with me to Oakland and it just makes me tougher. No matter what you go through, you've just to get through it.

Q. Do you have and regrets about your time in Washington?

A. Whenever a quarterback is drafted in the first round (the Redskins selected Campbell 25th overall in the 2005 draft), you want to take your team to the playoffs year in and year out. You want to get to the Super Bowl and win a championship. We weren't able to do that, and I'm upset about it because this town is hungry for that. Redskins fans are great fans, and they're still waiting. It's been a long time.

Q. You were involved with many charities in the area. Will you miss that aspect of your time with the Redskins?

A. That's the toughest part to leave. The football side of it ... you understand the business side of it. You know the chances of playing on one team your whole career probably won't happen. There's a slim chance of it. But the things I did in the community, and just dealing with the kids and trying to help out local high school athletes, I'm going to miss that a lot.

Yes Jason was a good buy but he never had the moxy to win here or 90% of the teams out there.

Jake Locker was on Mike and Mike in the morning on 980, now that kid sounds like a QB with strong leadership qualities and a winning persona.

I hope we have an opportunity to get him. Barring any issues in 2010.

Well...Let ME be the first to say:

PEACE OUT B!TCH. You stink and I hate you with your checkdown, play it safe football.

I hope Oakland will enjoy it when it's 3rd and 8, and you throw a 1 yard pass.

Oh, but Jason you're such a nice guy.

I don't give a f*ck if he single handedly cleans up the BP Oil spill, he is still a lame QB.

That's all I have to say about that.

I always liked him as a person, and believe me I rooted for him to succeed, but I think the situation for him is better in Oakland....No pressure for his job and no super bowl false super bowl expectations out there. I think he will put up similar stats to last year 3600/20/16.

Posted by: FedorEm | July 27, 2010 9:34 AM | Report abuse

not sure why this is relevant on the verge of Redskins training camp, but whatever....certainly, something like an update on some injured players(Horton/Rhino/Jarmon/Landry/Moss), or an update from those who went to AZ with DMac would have been more in tune with what is happening here and now....

Posted by: BeantownGreg1 | July 27, 2010 9:34 AM | Report abuse

Love it...JC is still a class act, even on the way out. I hope he does well out in Oakland.

Devo, don't hold your breath. If we're picking high enough to take Locker, then our problems run much deeper than QB...

The trade for McNabb all but eliminated that option. He is probably the #1 overall pick next year. He is more than likely going to end up in Buffalo. With McNabb the team is going to end up around 8-8 give or take. Middle of the pack in drafting next year. Already with a 3rd and a 4th the cost of trading up into the top 5 would wipe out the 2011 draft and #1 in the following year.

Posted by: srobert1117 | July 27, 2010 9:36 AM | Report abuse

Jason is a fine young man. I like him. However, he doesn't have the mentality of a successful NFL quarterback. He's too quick to see himself as a victim and, even if he doesn't "make excuses", he allows room for them. If I were building that case, this interview would be "Exhibit A". I wish him success and a career he can enjoy, but I don't think it's going to happen.

Question:

"Do you feel you were treated fairly and given a chance to succeed with the Redskins?"

Answer

"How do you have the right to complain about your treatment on the job when your last employer made you a millionaire?"

"Next question."

Definitely do not want a qb with a completion percentage as bad as he does...no to locker. I would rather see luck or mallet develop for 2 more years and draft him then...

Best of luck to you JC. However, from this point on let's not have anymore JC updates. He's not a Redskin, let's move on.

Completely off-topic here (which is probably good since the resurrection of the JC debate is just around the corner), but is anyone else completely disturbed by the Shake Weight for Men commercial? I mean, really...how can the people that made that thing NOT know what they're doing with that? And moreover, how do you ask--with a straight face--the actors in the commerical to say ambiguously gay stuff like "ooooh, that's it" while they're using it?

It would have been nice to see Campbell, behind a decent O line. A lot of people complaining about check downs, dont realize, that they werent check downs. Zorn got rid of the deep passes because , he knew the line couldnt block for them. The defense knew that also, so no team respected our deep ball.

I'm wonderin' if that RIManagement guy who posted the Baker's Dozen of Lame Posters will include the authors of what we've seen this week.

Nothing in the threads posted since Monday is new or could be held as valued insight.

After an interview with JC, expect a R Cartwright whine-a-thon thread about his not having had a chance to be the next Walter Payton.

Saturday night live did a great commercial for that. The female version of the shake weight….they were only selling the dvd (not the actual “exercise equipment”) of women “exercising” with it (sometimes two at a time, etc),. Funny as hell….prolly on youtube somewhere.

For a franchis QB of the future. I'd be willing to trade up. And lets be honest, despite all our collective enthusiasm for the upcoming season, we're headed for 8-8. That might put us in a position to trade up.

Hey Jason Campbell you sucked as a Redskin and you will suck as a raider. As for Jason Reid, get over it your boy is gone. The Skins are better off without him.

Jason Campbell is his typical passive-aggressive self in this interview. Has he ever taken responsibility for anything? Nothing is his fault. He was entitled to the Hogs as an OL, Jim Brown at RB, and the Posse at WR. He should be grateful that the Redskins gave him the opportunity to start so many games, because no one else in the league would've stuck down with this safe, vanilla ass that long. Can't wait to see him playing-it-safe in Oakland next year and to hear his next bag of excuses.

Oh yeah, you people who say that he's so "nice" and "classy" perplex me, because anyone THIS NICE can't be trusted.

Oakland does not have a particularly good offensive line nor good receivers, i still cant believe Hayward-Bay over Crabtree. I wish him good luck but i dont think he has bettered his situation much besides getting a much less critical fan base where quarterbacking is concerned.

===========================================

I agree with that 100%. The Skins will have a middle of the pack to upper third of the league passing game (barring the line stays healthy). K-Shan's agressive play calling and Mcnabbs deep ball throwing ability and agressiveness will open up alot this year. Regardless to the receiving corp. Campbell wasn't agressive enough to throw it when it was there, but who could blame him when it wasn't called or D-lineman drove his a$$ in the grown as if he was a shovel.

Same old bum, 3 and out 3 and out, punt punt punt 1 td, punt punt int. game over. Your a loser, losers make excuses, and always talk about there stats, you rack up another 125 yards and a garbage td at the end of every game when were out of the game. I wish Jason all the luck in the world. I for one understand that you didn`t get the support or consistent continuity from your front line/and front office in order to develop properly and succeed.

I hope you do well in Oakland and really show what your capable of, and I for one am still a huge fan, and will wait to see all the doubters proven wrong if that should happen.

Thanks for your service.

Gibbs' quote after he was asked if Campbell was mistreated....

"At some point you're going to have to take the team down the field in a driving hailstorm to win the game. If you get all uptight about stuff as the quarterback -- if trade rumors are something that bothers you -- you're in the wrong position."

"You gotta realize an NFL quarterback is going to go through a lot -- all the ones I coached did," Gibbs added through that shrill laugh of his. "If it wasn't [Mark] Rypien getting benched in the middle of a season, it was Joe Theismann technically going to get benched. Or it was Doug Williams going through two teams and coming here when everybody thought his career was over and still dealt with being benched."

100% agree Red...ranking all the things wrong with the Redskins and the vast number of things/people to hate during his time here, Campbell doesn't even make the top 10. Even though I don't agree with it, I get if someone hates having JC as their QB but hating him as an individual beyond retarded.

Not as retarded as stirring up the blog with this tired topic long after JC is gone (*cough* REID *cough*), but still pretty retarded.

Devo, blowing a 1st round pick on a QB in 2011 is stupid when you give up a 2nd and a 3rd/4th for McNabb. If the Eagles wanna waste picks like that that's their business...right now the focus should be on putting a team around McNabb and trying to win a SB in the 3-5 year window he'll be playing here. If McNabb was indeed worth the trade, we don't need to chase a "QB of the future" until 2012 at the earliest.

Some of you morons have spent your entire lives rooting for a Redskins organization that has rolled out complete crap at the QB position (I'm assuming that most of JC's supporters aren't old enough to have seen a real, NFL caliber QB behind center for the Skins). You people will take anything, I guess, after watching the team since '93 or '94.

I love how it's somehow impossible in your world for a QB to make others better. It's idiotic to assume that the most important position in sports can't actually elevate other positions.

You actually prove our point--"classy" only matters if you're good. That's all that counts at the end of the day. Drew Brees is classy. Great. Throw a parade for him. He's also one of the best QB's in the league.

Sure. I'm certain you wish you had played better at times as well. But hey, you got another shot and I wish you blessings and success. I wish more athletes would follow your example. i.e. Albert Haynesworth, DeAngelo Hall, and Clinton Portis. They are typical black trash. You, however, are someone I would encourage my son to look up to. As I have with Redskins greats like Art Monk, Charles Mann, and Darrell Green.

Hey Reid, let's focus on the upcoming season and forget about the recent past.

Why do you have to hate on Campbell when he's gone? He was a good guy who tried hard. It didn't work out here - so what? Good luck to him in Oakland. Judging from the quality of the writing in your comment, I'm guessing you're too young to fully understand what it's like to have a little class.

Best part of the off season was finally getting rid of Campbell. I'm not sold that getting McNabb is good for the long term success of the Redskins but if getting him was the only way to get Campbell out of town.. I'm glad we did. Funny how Campbell wanted to get the Skins in the playoffs but in the last 4 years he was here the only times we did was when he WASN'T playing QB...

Jake Locker was on Mike and Mike in the morning on 980, now that kid sounds like a QB with strong leadership qualities and a winning persona.

I hope we have an opportunity to get him. Barring any issues in 2010.

Posted by: Devo2 | July 27, 2010 9:30 AM | Report abuse

You hope we have an opportunity to use a Top-10 draft pick on a QB who in 3 years has yet to lead his team to a winning season? Who has a career completion % of less than 60% in college?

Please name the last time a RUNNING QB came into the NFL and had great success. The NFL is a passing league and Locker is a below average passer. Have you ever actually watched him play?

JC is a quality person. Yeah, he doesn't have that killer instinct and the leadership qualities that allow QB's to win win win, but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that he showed CLASS in a situation that fingered him as a bad guy 100% of the time. If he could have gotten the skins to 7-2 or 8-2 two years ago, his career would have looked a lot different right now. Also realize that Football is a team sport and the past 3-4 season far too many Redskins were playing for themselves, not the organization. Those selfish actions make the QB's job 50 times tougher!

Most fans, like Dan Synder are clueless how football is actually played. They live in a 7 on 7 fantasy football world where only QB, RB and WR play. Mark Rypien was a Super Bowl MVP for a reason, and it wasn't because of his skill set. He was only sacked 10 times that season.

When was the last time the Skins invested in the O-line before this season.

Yeah right

Great teams have great O-line, poor ones have a crap.

Clueless.

JC was ruined by the overly conservative coaching of Gibbs II, and the incompetent non-NFL level coaching of Zorn.

This current coaching staff will reveal the poor coaching we've had for the last10 years as well weak roster.

Posted by: oknow1 | July 27, 2010 12:41 PM | Report abuse

Great guy. He was doomed by an incompetent personnel man (Joe Gibbs), a less than earnest head coach (Joe Gibbs II), a head coaching experiment that failed (Jim Zorn), and the worst owner in the history of the NFL (Dan Snyder).

Jason will come back and beat the Skins. He is a solid NFL QB in the right system.

"Nice guy? I don't give a s h i t!"

That's kind of how I feel about 'Soup. So what, he's a nice guy. I am more than certain there are a lot of 'nice guys' on the unemployment line too. Honestly, I think he sucked balls and wasn't much of a leader. I used to think he was a capable pro QB with a crappy O-line and a new O-scheme every 5 minutes until he was injured and replaced by Todd Collins. Collins came in with less God-given ability and the exact same line and looked like an all-pro as a replacement. That was my turning point and now I even think I am guilty of being a doosh for being blind to the fact that JC just sucked donkey nuts.

When you use Rush as your rational I think you are probably a jealous redneck who blames their own failures and shortcommings on the black man getting too many breaks. Kind of like Rush does. How many overrated white QB's have there been that you nor Rush talk about? Todd Collins is one of them. Think about it, Besides Charlie Batch name one black QB who was able to carry a clip board for over 10 seasons and still collect a NFL paycheck? Meaning that they really were not NFL QB material but still held the backup jobs for years. Are they overrated white guys who held the job because they were white? All Rush and you prove is when you are black, in a position that white people are use to seeing themselves in you have to not only be good but twice as good as they are to get the same respect. I will take a page from old Rush and say if McNabb were a white QB he would go to the Hall of Fame. But as a black QB he is overrated huh?

Posted by: ged0386 | July 27, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

I'll always regret that we traded Jason Campbell before he was given a chance to prove wrong the idiotic portion of the fan base that constantly attacked him. The guy had all the tools to be a star in the NFL, he just never had the offensive line or consistency in his coaching staff and offense to be able to make it happen.

This is the same QB who started out 5-3 in 07 and 6-2 in 08. The same QB who won a national championship in college. The same QB who has without any doubt gotten better every year he has been in the league despite all the turmoil surrounding this team and offense over the past several years and despite having the league's worst offensive line after Randy Thomas and Chris Samuels went down last year.

Good luck in Oakland Jason, there is no doubt in my mind you have what it takes to be a successful starter in this league.

If Rush were a black man would you even care or be listening to anything he had to say about McNabb? Just using his rational to make a point. The guy who says our president is president only because he is black. I did not know affirmative action was part of the election process. What do I know? But I guess it has to be when a black person wins anything over a white male. According to rednecks like him a black man cant just be better than whites at anything except basketball and dancing. Anything else has to be a catch. Meanwhile a white man like Rush can become a millionaire by spewing racial remarks against minorities every morning on the radio and convincing people like you that you are at a disadvantage in this country because you are white. But yes, the black guy has all the breaks. Especially at NFL QB and presidential elections. Look how many there have been compared to the white males. The numbers say it all. The blacks get all the breaks. A handful of QB's in almost 80 years and one president out of 44 and we get all the breaks. What world does he live in?

I respected Campbell for his efforts but Reid needs to get over the fact that Jason just didn't get the job done here in Washington and it was time for him to move on. Why have a blog post with a Q&A session that was done months ago. Campbell is an Oakland Raider now. I'm sure the Rock Cartwright (another Reid and La Canfora favorite) Q&A is coming up soon with Leigh Torrence to follow.

Again no one should question Campbell leadership from his time in Washington. Its hard for a guy to Lead a team when the Owner and weasel never gave him credit or never gave him the confidence to say ur the starter go out and do ur thing. it was always trade this trade that. 2nd no one can lead a team when 50 percent of the team didnt care did there own thing and handle ful high paid guys going above the coaches to comlain to the owner. Nothing in Washington since Gibbs left was condusive to have a really leader. So Give Jason credit for handling everything great when some Qb would probably have snapped

Some, nah--a whole lot of--skins fans are so ignorant. If Jason Campbell was the problem, then why did the coaching staff completely revamp the o-line? Why didn't they allow McNabb, who's injury prone, to go into the season playing behind that hiddeous line that Jason had? He asked the right question. Why didn't they make some of the upgrades while he (Jason) was here? There is nothing wrong with Jason's intellect. In fact, I am absolutely sure that he is one of the smartest and most talented QBs in the league. Peyton Manning can't function wihtout having the best o-line in the league; yet, fans applaud him as some kind of genious. He threw that game-ending interception in the SB and blamed his o-line, who gave him maximum protection and didn't allow one sack during the game. Put Jason behind Manning's line, and JC would have stellar numbers, too. Jason Campbell is on the upswing, while McNabb's days are numbered. I like McNabb, but there is no way that I would have given him 11 million instead of continuing to groom a promising young QB. Pasquarelli was right--the Raiders got a steal. Jason is on the upswing!

Jason Campbell for various reasons wasn't as successful a Redskin as he, and we wanted. But in today's world of athletes who think only of "me", are crass, classless, and get into all types of incidents off the field, Jason Campbell is a nice young man with class. And having class and being nice does matter. Football is only a game, and in the real world of life Jason Cambell will no doubt be successful. Mean spirited, immature ignorant, clueless, classless and lifeless individuals such as ihatedallas can only wish.

Good luck Jason Campbell.

If mcnabb goes down this team is in BIG trouble gross-man and brennan 2 pale skinned weaklings pretending to be qb's who have absolutely no talent at all, you could clone them together and still come up with garbage.
