Little movement on Jason Campbell trade front

Don't expect too much movement on the Jason Campbell trade front right now.

Campbell's agent, Joel Segal, has been in contact with teams that have expressed interest in Washington's former starter, two people familiar with the situation said Friday. But with the NFL focused on this month's three-day draft that begins April 22, it seems everyone is taking a wait-and-see approach regarding trades.

Moreover, when Shanahan took Campbell to lunch Monday to discuss Washington's trade for Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb and Campbell's situation, Shanahan emphasized Campbell would be brought back as a backup to McNabb if there isn't a better situation for him out there. And the Redskins must receive adequate compensation for Campbell, Shanahan said.

At this point, most teams are set on their top two quarterbacks, and those considering changes plan to select quarterbacks in the draft. It is highly doubtful a team would commit to Campbell as their No. 2 quarterback, let alone guarantee him a starting spot. And at this late stage of the offseason (the Redskins' first three-day minicamp begins April 16), Campbell would have a lot of catching up to do in learning another new scheme.

In all likelihood, if multiple teams considered Campbell to be a viable short- or long-term option at quarterback, there would have been more buzz around the league about him immediately after the Redskins offered the five-year veteran only a first-round tender of $3.14 million instead of increasing the offer a little to receive first- and third-round picks as draft compensation for Campbell if he joined another team.

If Campbell is traded, a deal probably would occur once the draft gets underway. The possibility exists that Campbell will return to the organization as McNabb's top backup and then become an unrestricted free agent before the 2011 season. Well, if there is a 2011 season.

Have to admit I was shocked that they were talking about the Lions 1st rounder.. I would be happy with their second, but how sweet would it be to have 2 top 5 picks..

Okung and Berry!

If I was the Lions I'd rather draft a defensive player with first round pick, I could see them dealing their second and the Redskins may be desparate enough to get rid of Albert that they would do it.

So, if this happens, it means we have to take at least on two defensive tackle types at some point.

You can't remove AH without replacing him.

We'd have to somehow get extra picks out of the deal to justify it.

Otherwise, it stinks of a lateral move.

And only crabs move sideways.

CAMPBELL’S AGENTS STILL SEARCHING FOR RIGHT SITUATION

While agent for former Washington Redskins starting quarterback Jason Campbell continues to search around the league for a team willing to sign his client, the consensus of opinion from the other teams appears to be a resounding “no, thank you.”

While most league insiders seem to regard Campbell as a “nice guy,” they also say the quarterback is living proof of the old maxim about nice guys -- in that he consistently finishes last.

According to Campbell’s agent, most teams are simply not interested in a quarterback who cites experience playing dodge ball with his former head coach Jim Zorn as one of his key skills and attributes. Likewise, the other teams around the league appear to be underwhelmed with a quarterback who says he regularly goes bowling with his tight ends, or tries to make basketball trick shots in games of H-O-R-S-E with his wide receivers.

Rather, most other teams appear to be looking for a quarterback who displays a proven ability to lead his team, make clutch throws when the game is on the line, and win football games. Unfortunately, Campbell’s resume cannot truthfully cite any of this.

If I'm Shanahan, I'm NOT releasing Campbell without something in return. It's not his fault he didn't get a fair shake.

Please don't get my hopes up about the Lions trade. Two top 5 picks!

I'd get Okung and Spiller...CHAMPIONSHIP!

The only way I can see that Detroit rumor being feasible at all is if they are being cheap. They would only owe Haynesworth like 9 mill for the next 2 years instead of the 30-40 mill going to be given to the #2 pick.

"I heard titans were considering giving us a third round pick for him"

I'd package Campbell with AH, ask for a 3rd and 4th, and ask for a 6th for Campbell.

That would render 3 picks in the middle rounds of a draft allegedly stocked with mid round talent.

That's 1, 3 4, 4, 5 6, 7: seven picks.

Why does JC always get an excuse about learning a new scheme every year? There never is a report about any other player traded to a new team or getting a new coach/oc and how there players are having to learn a new scheme.

Can some of you brainiacs please explain to me why he is always given a ready made excuse before the season starts? Is he just dumb or what? Cuz that train has left the station a long time ago.

Thanks.

I really do not see us taking Berry... not a smart investment at this point. We somehow get a 1st for Haynie... we go ahead and trade down with one of them and acquire more picks. Try to stock up on as many picks as possible and hope we can strike gold and find 2 lineman, a LB, a DE for the 3-4 and a RB at some point (if were REALLY REALLY lucky we'll throw Portis in, in the trade with Haynie...)

good points..
I think Shanahan is sincere when he says..."all positions are in an open competition." Unlike the past Redskins HCs that did what the size of the Contracts told them to (and Snyder).

McNabb starting may not be a lock. In an open competition this summer you would have...
a. McNabb.. best read/release speed of the two and huge experience.
b. JC.. who knows the team personnel and their propensities far better than the other two QBs...ie. WR running patterns..etc.
c. Rex, who knows Kyles playbook inside and out much better than the other two QBs.

Again this is only of interest if Shanny is true to his word about an "open competition". But, i would bet if there was a preseason game today and each QB had an equal shot at running the Offense.. it could be a dead heat between the three.

McNabb could change all that if he spends a great deal of time practicing with the current roster of receivers up until preseason but, game conditions are not the same as pitch and catch.

Trading Albert to the Lions for their #2 overall might make more sense to DET than it seems.

DET gets a guy for $10 mil for 2 years. If they have to sign the #2 overall, it'll be $40mil guaranteed for a guy that will probably be good. Last year, Stafford got $40+mil guaranteed.

Schwartz was the DC in Tenn when Albert played his best ball, so he knows how to use him effectively.

For DET, its much lower risk. In that respect, its a lot like our trade for McNabb instead of trading up to get Bradford.

When does this Shanahan season begin to be called Shanahan 2.0? The guy comes in with his balls swollen up with vim and vinegar. He couldn't wait to get in Danny's candy shop and create a team in his image. Sorry, we've seen it before with Gibbs.

Sure, Shanny was an offensive genius and only removed from the league one season but similarities are startlingly similar.

>upgrade at qb for draft picks; check!
>upgrade at running back; check!
>overhaul defense; check!
>bring along son; check!
>jettison an all-pro cause he won't tow the line; not crossed off the list just yet.

Bottom line: get older guys, give away picks, and lose guys on the cheap.

Hopefully, his way works this time.

First of all, it won't happen.

Second, even without picks, it's a good trade. The BIG HEADACHE is gone, and Shanahan has solidified his control and power over shaping his team his way. HUGE intangible.

Second, the skins could chose to go one of two ways, both better than not making this trade.

first draft Suh and Okung, They have their new Nose Tackle and their new Left Tackle.

OR, trade down with one of the picks for a lower 1st and a second or high third.

Oh and defenders in all sports move sideways.

Okay, let’s say no one wants him. What’s your point?
Other than “I’m gonna keep on blathering again and again and again about how I think he sucks and the fact that they haven’t traded him within 5 days of picking up Mcnabb PROVES that me and all the other haters are right…HA HA!”

Should they just cut him? Yeah, that’d be real smart.
You idiots do realize that you are now moving from a gray area based upon opinion (that he sux vs. doesn’t suck) that cannot be proven to an area that will eventually be proven one way or another; that some team will or won’t pick him up. And it’s highly likely that someone will.

With the current situation and the team essentially saying goodbye to the guy, you haters are truly showing that you are indeed haters….like Red said….what the f_ck do you want from the guy???? Looks like he really did bang a bunch of your GF’s……

Not fighting Brian Orakpo generally seems like a smart play.

Posted by: Curzon417 | April 9, 2010 11:34 AM

And this is the reason we won't be drafting this guy....That's a straight b!tch move....We don't need LBs like that...

Posted by: 4thFloor | April 9, 2010 11:38 AM

So if I go pick a fight with KpO, I can be a LB for the skins. I think that would be worth uglying up the face a bit.. Can I wear a mouth guard?

Posted by: alex35332 | April 9, 2010 11:44 AM

Then you made you Portis/Rudy reference.

Remember Rudy, the movie?

When I was in HS, the OLine coach would ask for the starting 5 to step up. If you wanted to start, you needed to step up. If 2 people stepped up to the same position, the Coach would have the 2 go at it...the winner was the starter....

When CP26 was a rookie, they asked for the starters to come up, and he stepped up, though Terel Davis was the starter.

He gave the reason he was the 'million dollar man'....So the SJK what??? What does his salary have to do with a seat in the coaching room?? These are linebackers who need to be vicious......

Lets take these one at a time.

Trading a 3rd for a bum like Brunell who was going to be released anyway, not the same as trading for a QB such as McNabb.

Trading a 2nd and Champ Bailey for Portis not the same as signing to RB to cheap incentive based contracts.

Defense needs to be overhauled they create no turnovers and can't stop drives in the clutch.

Comparing Gibbs son to Kyle Shannahan is a joke KS has been an OV without his dad for two years and had one of the best offenses in the league.

If he wont tow the line then everyone else will think they don't have to tow the line, thats how teams lose just like this one has.

The DET rumor, and who knows if there is even a tiny ounce of truth in it, also brings up one other important point. Danny's wallet.

He'll have spent $30mil on Albert, and he'll need to spend another $60-80mil on the draft picks if we have both the #2 and #4. Danny pretty much guaranteed Shanahan about $35mil.

Everyone thinks Danny has lots of $$$, but we really don't know. Plus, people refer to him as THE owner, but there are others that own shares. Paying these big contracts means the minority owners might not seeing dividends than they expect.

good point about Gibbs/Shanny similarities.

Though I wouldn't say Shanny upgraded at RB. The guys he brought in managed to carry the ball over 250 last year -- and not score a TD. Quinton Ganther ran for 3 TDs.

We wont get more than a 2nd for BFA... Especially if this spat between Shanny and him continues to grow. Teams realize Sanny doesn't want him/wants to get rid of him... that will only continue to lower the price teams will pay. We need Albert to come in, talk with Shanny... about anything it doesn't matter... and then have the two of them make up publically and say all is good, even if it isn't. That way it looks like we want him and will keep him and then maybe, maybe we'll be able to convince someone to take him and give us a 1st...

Gotta say having 2 firsts in this years draft would allow us to trade back and acquire more picks and that would really improve my opinion of the Mcnabb trade... Haynesworth or no Haynesworth.

Flounder,

Similar not identical. The fact that you're onboard with the decisions dosen't detract from the similarities. Sure the sons are not equal but similar nonetheless.

Brunell is not equal to McNabb not even an equal upgrade. But, how old was he when he got here? He's still in the league and his replacement in Jax is where?

We still need two starting offensive tackles and perhaps a guard. Who the hell is going to start on the defense? And where is the depth?
There is only one end and perhaps an end/nose if Big Al comes around. Still there's a need inside at LB not to mention the secondary if LL is dealt. AT LEAST 5 STARTERS and one first day pick.

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will this team be built in a day but alas the trying continues.

Bottom line is that no team is going to give up a draft pick in this year's draft for Campbell. A team that was genuinely interested in him as a potential starter would have made him an offer as a RFA or worked out a deal with the Redskins well before they acquired McNabb. With both McNabb and Grossman under contract, teams know that JC has no value to the Redskins even as a backup.

More than likely the Redskins end up dealing him after the draft for a mid-round pick to a team that wants someone to challenge their starter or provide a decent backup like Carolina or Jacksonville. Given the learning curve for any QB in a new system and all of the abuse Campbell has taken here as a starter, I doubt any team would look at him as a definite starter. I feel bad for Campbell as he would have had a better chance of hooking on with a team if the Skins hadn't tendered him for 2010.

maybe more Skins QB backups in NO?

from espn

METAIRIE, La. -- The New Orleans Saints have held workouts for veteran quarterbacks Josh McCown and Patrick Ramsey.

Team spokesman Greg Bensel says the pair visited Saints headquarters Thursday.

The Saints are looking for potential backups to Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees. Mark Brunell, who'll turn 40 in September, backed up Brees the past two seasons, but is a free agent.

Ramsey and McCown both began their NFL careers in 2002.

Ramsey is a Ruston, La., native who played for Tulane. He started 11 games for the Redskins in 2003, but has played in only four games since 2006 in stints with Denver, Tennessee and Detroit.

McCown started 13 games for Arizona in 2004. He spent the past two seasons as a backup in Carolina.

Thanks for that link Curz. Obviously Shanny isn’t tipping his hand, but it is a real quote from the man himself. I’m never critical of the RI beat guys, but lately J Reid and the bunch have been really pushing this whole AH vs Shanny thing without any quotes from Shanny or AH himself; only putting this huge spin on it like the 2 guys hate each other and the team will implode if Shanny can’t trade him as soon as possible.. Really interested to see if they put something up here about THAT quote from Shanny.

Lions trade for Haynesworth

The Detroit Lions have agreed in principal to trade their first round pick in the 2011 draft to the Washington Redskins in exchange for reportedly disgruntled defensive tackle, Albert Haynesworth. More to follow...

Fair enough, Red. NHL'93 & '94 for the win. If I'd dedicated all the hours I spent playing those games to something productive... I'd have been a hell of a lot more productive.

My preference is for Carolina BBQ, but c'mon, I'm a zillion miles away from the Carolinas, I gotta take what I can get. There are a couple of good places to get Q out here, and I count myself fortunate for that, Cowboys fan notwithstanding.

" ... at this late stage of the offseason (the Redskins' first three-day minicamp begins April 16), Campbell would have a lot of catching up to do in learning another new scheme."

Whether he stays or goes he will have to learn a new system. SO WHAT? Is McNabb not learning a new system? What is the difference? one is smart enough to adapt and the other is a proven failure.

"In all likelihood, if multiple teams considered Campbell to be a viable short- or long-term option at quarterback, there would have been more buzz around the league ..."

Well, DUH!!! The fact is that this guy is not meant to be playing QB at a pro level. He has shown that over and over and over and over and over again. It takes a brain with no live cells to see otherwise. I will guarantee this guy will not be the backup to McNabb, most likely he will be cut or be a third stringer.

Finally someone that understands NFL trades. No one is coughing up a top pick for ANY of these guys. Randy Moss was traded for a 4th round pick. Every time Butters refuses to show up, it hurts his value more. Campbell + Portis = negative value

I TOLD YOU ALL that the rest of the NFL knows our QB is HORRIBLE. They stack up the line, and blitz us constantly because they know he will NOT beat them. This makes our O-line look even worse.

For the last 3 years, we have been playing with a back up player at the most important position on the field. I'll call out the names of the "Campbell fans" soon.

at the start of preseason.. if it is, DM, Rex and JC.. I'd say all 3 are even.
DM for being DM
Rex for knowing Junior's playbook.
JC for 3 years experience with the WRs/TEs.

Value, value, value, value, value (or for the slow folks, lack thereof). I posted the link yesterday for the draft value chart.
http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php
Bloggers think the 'skins can get a 1st for Butters and a 3rd for Campbell. No way. My point in listing Moss was he was an older, All-Pro WR being traded for a bag of peanuts. Butters is a little younger but carries the same baggage as Moss. NO ONE IS GOING TO OFFER A 1 OR 2 FOR HAYNESWORTH. The 'skins will be lucky to get a 4 or 5 for Campbell.

The result of this years lack luster tournament is that the NCAA is opting to let every team under the sun into next years tournament. One bad game and a team can go 64 and 1 and be eliminated in the second round. Please tell me how that lends itself to rewarding the nation's best team.

The day a 60+ seeded team in the NCAA tournament actually competes for a shot at the title (or the day the "Last 3 in" among the at-larges does the same) is the day the field should be expanded.

Until then, it's nothing but a money-making gesture.

You should have to fight in the regular season to earn a berth. Not be given one for mediocrity.

Seriously PSP, Butters had to be carted off last season because his heart was about to explode! The heart of a 350lb., 28 year old looks like a 50 year old's. Sure, the guy played, but could you imagine his arteries? An overwieght, slacking malcontent will get you a 1 in Madden, but not in the real world. If he slimmed down to 300lbs, worked out with the team and bought into the program, then I would gladly change my opinion. Oh, and poor Danny's money, have you seen that Six Flags is trading at 39 cents a share?

This sh!t talking donkey doesn't believe you trade AH as a cursory review of the skins' defensive tackle rotation reveals that the team would have to add two tackles (Griff was released, remember) should it occur.

In all the whining about AH, few folks have answered the question, "Who do you replace him with?"

The guy said he wasn't pleased with his conditioning last year, and wanted to workout alone just as A Carter is.

He never said he wanted to leave the team, the WAPO team insinuates this.

So why are folks beefing?

You want to move Fat Albert, and then count on A Montgomery, M Kemoteau, and K Golston place whatever replacements against the jints and B Jacobs in late December?

I say you ignore the media instigated sound and fury regarding Haynesworth as he is the best tackle we got.

If I'm the vikes, I see JC as an upgrade over T Jackson, but not necessarily Sage Rosenfels.

Campbell plugged into an offense behind a solid line where he just gives the ball to A Petersen and tosses occasionally to P Harvin is not a bad thing as things aren't dependent on him as much as the stars around him.

Which is why he excelled at Auburn.

Gotta a baseball question:

Should Selig re-align the AL East so there's less of a crush on teams trying to compete against the sawx/yanks?

Tampa drafts well enough to compete, but doesn't have the money to keep its kids together.

Toronto is just simply having issues getting over the money/talent hump.

The O's are, well, the O's, but have a nice position player mix--the Orioles lack the pitching right now to make hay in the division.

Maybe the Rays/Blue Jays move into the central, and the Indians/Tigers move into the East.

Reid unfortunately has a man-crush on Clownble and lets his analysis of state mostly gained in garbage time to affect any objective analysis of his performance on a very poor 4-12 team that he had a lot to do with creating that record.

Yardage in garbage time doesn't give you the right to be starting QB on this or any other NFL team.

There's a reason nobody else wants Clownble on their roster:

He succks.

Posted by: dc1020008 | April 10, 2010 12:42 AM | Report abuse

Since NONE of you people here are Redskins, if the players admired JC's courage and guts last year, can you think of a backup qb with whom they'd be more comfortable? Grossman didn't impress me in college, and I'd take JC's combination of skills and fortitude over Grossman's any day. McNabb will get hurt next year, which means 2-4 games the back-up qb will play. If the Skins upgrade their o-line as we expect (pray, rather), JC playing behind a better o-line for a few games is much better than Grossman.

Posted by: pdfordiii | April 10, 2010 1:54 AM | Report abuse

Campbell would have a lot of catching up to do in learning another new scheme.

@hpytrkr1, the position of quarterback is the singlemost difficult position to play on the team. he's responsible for understanding the blocking schemes of the offensive linemen (and sometimes the running backs), the passing routes of the receivers and making hot reads and reading an everchanging defense thrown at him. the quarterback is also the most dependent player on the field because if the linemen aren't protecting him (like ours didn't protect campbell), he'll get his azz kicked on every offensive snap. if his receivers can't get seperation on their routes, he must hold the ball longer than normal. that and a porous o line is a recipe for disaster. also when a qb doesn't have a running back that likes to practice w/ the team and the run game is non existent, how is that the qb's fault. defenses enjoy a one dimensional offense because they're predictable. there's not one successful qb in the league that you can name that's gone thru as many offensive systems as campbell...not one. p manning, brady, favre have all played under the same system since they came into the league or at least had stability w/ the same o system. can we say that about campbell? if you need to hear an explanation of campbell's plight w/o comparing to other qb's who have better success, then perhaps you should switch to watching figure skating.

I love all of the excuses Campbell gets. It's a new one every year. He's learning a new system, the playbook is too complicated, he's learning another new system (even though he played in the West coast system in college), the offensive line is bad. Sure last season the line was bad, but the season before Portis (whom everyone says has lost a step) rushed 1,487, on 342 carries for a 4.3 yards per carry average behind the same line Campbell played behind. Portis didn't slow down that year until teams realized Campbell couldn't complete a pass beyond 10 yards, and started loading the box to stop the short pass and the running game.

The Redskins would do well to get a high fourth round pick for him. The guy is awful. Terrible mechanics, poor field vision, a total inability to read defenses, and indecisive. He has a high completion percentage because most of his passes went for two yards and a cloud of dust. Campbell played a West Coast offense in his final (best) season at Aubrun, so he should have been able to adapt very easily. Apparently some West Coast offenses are easier to grasp than others.

As for Campbell's "deep ball" it's more like a deep fade. Those big, arcing rainbows enable even the slowest DB's to regain whatever cushion the Skins receivers are able to establish.

The best Campbell can hope for is to pull a Rich Gannon, hold the clipboard for a few seasons, and then in his late 30s have two or three breakout seasons before retirement.

One thing about Campbell that we can't overlook - Of the 1st round QBs drafted since 2005, the year Campbell was drafted, only Cutler has comparably good stats - Campbell is an excellent QB, and should not be traded unless he brings high value. He can (and will win) and by his 10th season could exceed 20,000 yards passing. Not quite Sonny numbers but the best we've seen around since Sonny. I'd like to see him learn from McNabb and step in when McNabb inevitably is injured.

tkoho, what the phukk makes you think anyone is making an excuse for campbell. anyone who knows football understands that it takes more than the qb to move the offense. while you're mentioning that portis had x number of yards you also failed to realize that most of portis's yards were earned in the first 8 weeks when he was actually leading all running backs in the league. unlike others, i don't believe that portis has lost a step but his undoing is his lack of desire to put the team first and the results showed this past season when he couldn't gain any decent yardage on a carry. it wasn't magic that suddenly the o line looked better when betts or cartwright stepped in. without a running game, not even tom brady would look like a perennial pro bowl qb. it's obvious that from your armchair, you've got all the answers....unfortunately, they're not the right answer. you really don't have a clue. any team w/ a marquee qb has an o line to protect him and that's the difference between campbell and any other qb. sure, aaron rodgers got hit more but he didn't win every game on his shoulders. he had a top ranked defense that scored and actually won games and he had a running back that scored more than any all our running backs combined. even the worst defenses (lions) realized that shutting the running game down would change the tempo of the game and it did. the next time you want to post a blog and sound like an idiot, go do it on a cowboy forum!

@ charronegro1971

I didn't fail to mention anything about Portis' season in 2008. The last line of that paragraph read:

"Portis didn't slow down that year until teams realized Campbell couldn't complete a pass beyond 10 yards, and started loading the box to stop the short pass and the running game."

Pleased you mentioned Aaron Rodgers -- "aaron rodgers got hit more but he didn't win every game on his shoulders." He did get sacked more than Campbell and he still led his team to the playoffs.

And opposing teams shut down the Skins running game because that was the only part of the offense capable moving the ball. Opponents begged Campbell to beat them, and week after week he failed.

I think you have such an emotional attachment to Campbell you are incapable of seeing his multiple flaws. Campbell is a third tier QB at best. And there are plenty of those available without having to trade for them. You have the talented but washed up: Bulger and Culpepper. The young and the talentless (Campbell's category): Kyle Boller, Kellen Clemmons, Tavaris Jackson, JP Losman, Josh McKown, Patrick Ramsey, and Chris Simms. And you have the untested and possibly untalented: Brodie Croyle, Gibran Hamden, and Troy Smith.

Nothing Campbell has accomplished distinguishes him from any but the bottom three on that list.

Question: Is anyone comfortable with Grossman as a backup if McNabb gets injured? ...
Posted by: Lisa_R | April 9, 2010 4:30 PM

WHEN, not if he gets injured. Unless Shanallen pulls off some O-line magic before the season starts, McNabb WILL be pounded in a way very few QBs could survive. And Grossman has a history of being injury prone.

Well then we will finally get to see what Colt can do... But must say with of this not if but when McNabb gets hurt.. why get him??? Team is rebuilding why not draft a franchise QB like Clausen then in 2 or 3 years EVERYONE will be on the same page to make a run at a championship..
