A Couple of Signings and Some Releases

It's that time of year -- comings and goings farther down on the depth chart, but I know you guys want all the info....
The Redskins announced that they've signed QB Derek Devine, the 6-3, 222-pound former Marshall QB who signed as a rookie free agent with Seattle in 2007 and was released before the season, and safety Patrick Ghee, who also signed as a rookie free agent with the Seahawks in 2007 and was released before the season. Carolina signed him to its practice squad Dec. 26; he played at Wake Forest and is 6-1, 210.
The team also announced that it has released DE Alonzo Dotson, QB Bret Meyer, S Kevin Mitchell, and S Justin Scott.

Zorn will learn coach speak once the media uses his words to his disadvantage. Not only a rookie coach, but a rookie in dealing with the media.

Posted by: Curzon417 | May 6, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

It's interesting how some bloggers continue to focus on the Defensive End and "no pass rush" issue. It's like people have to find something wrong, when they know not what they speak. This has been a top 10 defense for three of four years. The Redskins did not lose to the Seahawks because of a lack of a pass rush. They do need young talent at the position, but let's not act like a DE is going to take us to the Super Bowl...

The Redskins have not been an elite team because...

1) Conflicting offensive philosophies and conservatism

2) Some free agent busts

3) Gibbs' overcommittment to aging players, particularly at the QB position

sic,

Using your logic, shouldn't the winner of the SB have the #1 ranked defense, and the #1 ranked offense, or at least one of the two?

I understand the value of determining how your team stacks up against the competition, but rankings can also be distorting.

Our defense will out shine the offense this year, for obvious reasons, but the lack of youth on the D line could come back to bite us, in the event of injuries.

More than having a top ten ranked anything, I prefer to see big plays made at critical junctures of big games, which we seem to have been lacking (excepting Landry's picks in Seattle.)

Ryan O'Halloran just stopped by Redskin Park and phoned this in:

Receiver Antwaan Randle El had arthroscopic knee surgery to remove what coach Jim Zorn called a "loose body" of cartilage. The team expects him to be sidelined three to four weeks.

Zorn said he's not concerned about Randle El's availability for training camp which starts in mid-July.

Posted by: Greg | May 6, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Our defense is good, not great. They scheme well and have a good team defense mentality that keeps defenders in lanes, on assignment ect.

Yet you cannot deny that we give QBs to much time. If we were better at attacking QBs we could change what they want to do, create more game changing plays, and protect our DBS. We counted on our DBs last year to be world beaters on many plays...and games like the second dallas game it killed us.

I can buy they didn't see value in the draft at the higher picks, but to say DL isn't an area of concern, I can't agree with.

I have watched to many 35 year-old statues carve up the skins the past 3/5/10/15 years to feel comfortable things "just guys" can fill that need.

But whateves...GO SKINS!

Whacking the QB does not require any fancy schemes; just a reckless abandon mentality and crazy streak, and physical prowess.

The retired Warren Sapp comes to mind (as does Dexter Manley Sr.) although I don't know if the physical prowess part applies; certainly a strong dude though.

The Redskins don't have such a guy on their roster, which is not a deal breaker in and of itself, but still...

It wasn't "stupid" to draft two wide outs in the second round, so much as questionable, as this team does have other areas of need.

"Our defense will out shine the offense this year, for obvious reasons, but the lack of youth on the D line could come back to bite us, in the event of injuries."

Disagree with this statement. I think our defense was overachieving last year, particularly after the loss of ST, Carlos Rogers, and Rocky Mac. Take the fact that one of these is gone forever, and the other two will likely not be back to their old self, it seems this defense has dropped considerably in the talent department. Couple that with the loss of GWilliams, and I think we'll see a noticeable difference in our defensive performance (we won't be bad, but I don't think we'll be stellar either). Hopefully I'm wrong on that point.

On the other hand, our offense severely underachieved in my book. Two offensive lineman were out for the year, it took a long time for the backups to get situated (which can only help in this year's depth department), CP + Moss + ARE were all hobbled for a significant portion of the year, and we now have another year under the belt of JC. Add those ingredients to the 3 2nd round talents added to the mix, along with the addition of a head coach who's primary area of expertise is offense (and more specifically QBs) and you can see the makings of an explosive system. Granted that most of the ingredients listed above are respectively young (JC, 2nd round picks, Zorn as a coach/playcaller, new system), but I fully expect the offense to outperform what we saw last year - even with the expected hiccups.

Overall, I expect the defense to take one step back while the offense takes 2 steps forward, which should put us right in the mix for the NFC East and/or Wild-card spot.

Make it happen ZJ

Interesting counter point psps.

The statement about our defense outshining the offense is predicated on those guys being familiar with the system, and each other, whereas the offense is incorporating a new system and a couple of rookies.

Good point about the OL, though. Having those guys healthy (fingers crossed,) should be a big difference maker to the offense as a whole.

Although the D probably did overachieve last year, if they do not have to be on the field for as many plays as last year due to 3 and outs, it should help balance out the loss of talent in our LBs. If, as Cooley predicts, Reed improves on his play from last year and 30 playing in STs play, I don't see a huge drop off.

And the upgraded philosophy on offense should help to keep the D fresher.

Only a person of a certain age would think that calling people names has any intrinsic value.

Usually once your age (or IQ) outgrows your shoe-size you give it up, anon.

Wonder what % of geeks up here wear player jerseys on non-gamedays?

Message from fashion police:

I'm still in favor of the black and burgundy jerseys.

Helmet: Remains the same, of course!

Jersey: Black with burgundy numbers with gold outlining the number and name.

Pants: Black with burgundy, gold, and white stripes.

Cleats: Black/gold.

or

Jersey: All burgundy with gold numbers and letters. numbers and letters are outlined in white.

Pants: Burgundy with gold, black, and white stripes.

Cleats: black, burgundy, or gold.

+++Insider information even before redskins.com post it.

I love it!

Posted by: Curzon417 | May 6, 2008 11:40 AM++++

Save the sarcasm. Redskins.Com has blown the lid off three major stories Jasno never even got a sniff of:

1. "Zorn passes first test"

2. Malcolm Kelly is "learning fast."

3. "Beach Blitz Returns May 17-18."

Now THAT's solid journalism.

Now now Corkczar, there's always room for more puffery and hagiography on redskins.com.

How about "Vinny Cerrato: the man, his life, his loves, and racquetball"? Or "Larry Michael: colossus of TV, or merely a football God?"

Then why read the comments?

Posted by: Redcoat | May 6, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

It is evident that the higher powers at the redskins organization read this blog. Maybe if we make a bigger fuss about uniforms we can actually get some. I vote burgundy on burgundy. Maybe even Black on Burgundy.

I'm starting to think Redcoat and Chia Pet are the Anons and they're just arguing with themselves.

This would be a decent blog if we didn't have to fish thru all of Redcoat's, Chia Pet's, Team Anon's, and chris larrY's BlogBS.

Seriously, look back, what worthwhile things has any of these people said in the last 3 days?

We finally get a break from Rosie O'Canfora and his BS and you guys can't stop cryin' like three year olds.

Devine story out of Oregon

QB Derek Devine Gets Shot With Washington

The number of NFL quarterbacks with ties to the state will increase again this week when former Canby High School quarterback Derek Devine signs with Washington, where he will reunite with Jim Zorn, the former Seattle QB coach who brought Devine to the Seahawks last year for a tryout that lasted until the team's final pre-season game.

Former Canby High School quarterback Derek Devine has reunited with Jim Zorn in Washington. Last year, Zorn coached Devine in Seattle.
Zorn, now Washington's head coach, last year raved about Devine's arm strength and ability. But Devine was fighting an uphill battle because of his limited experience. He played very sparingly at Marshall University and only received the tryout because of a good workout at Oregon's pro day in March of 2007.

Now, Devine is getting another opportunity in the league. However, he has a tough road ahead.

In Seattle, Devine was one of four QBs and was No. 3 when he was cut loose before the team brought in Charlie Frye from Cleveland.

Washington has five quarterbacks on its roster. Jason Campbell is the starter. Todd Collins, who led the team into the playoffs last season, is a lock at No. 2. And the team drafted Colt Brennan out of Hawaii. The team also has second-year QB Sam Hollenbach, who was No. 3 at the end of last season, and signed rookie free agent Bret Meyer out of Iowa State.

Devine was in Washington Monday for a physical and will practice with the team Tuesday and Wednesday. He said he was excited about the opportunity that he thought might come after Zorn landed the Washington job.

"I was hoping to get a look at least since he was the one who brought me to Seattle," Devine said.

Devine said he's been keeping himself in shape since he was released by Seattle last year and works out five days a week.

He said nothing was guaranteed but he hopes to impress enough to stick beyond the current mini-camp.
.
"I'm assuming he's running the same West Coast offense since he was in Seattle for seven years," Devine said.

Devine becomes the 10th QB with ties to Oregon currently on a NFL roster. Eight played high school football in the state of Oregon.
