Hall Agrees to Terms; Canty Could Visit Today

Cornerback DeAngelo Hall has reached agreement with the Redskins on a deal worth a maximum of $55 million over six years, according to league sources. He will receive roughly $23 million guaranteed and $30 million over the first three years.

I am waiting to get full details on the deal, but there probably is a hefty option/roster bonus after that third year. Huge deal for Hall. We shall see what it means for Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers. Hard to see them keeping Springs at $6 million now.

There should be an update on defensive end Chris Canty later and he could be here in the morning. The Redskins contacted his agent right after midnight, according to sources.

The Redskins also remain interest in Albert Haynesworth, though finding the cap space to sign him will be very tricky. The team also is interested in signing offensive lineman Derrick Dockery, who was released by Buffalo on Thursday. He could be in for a visit as early as today, too.

Re-signing Hall, whom the team picked up in November after he was released by the Oakland Raiders, though, was the centerpiece of the offseason plan to upgrade the Redskins through the free-agent market, which opened at 12:01 a.m.

I'm hoping the Skins re-sign Hall and sign Canty and Dockery. (This Willis kid would be icing on the cake.) Good golly, that combination of things would make me feel awfully good going into the draft.

Maybe they can swing by and pick up Dock on the way.

Good start here!

I think we should go hard after guards Dockery, Moore, and Brown (if we can get 2, great); go after Willis for RT; go for Canty and Haynesworth; go for Bart Scott-- see who'll home in and then let's rethink the draft!!!

Cutting Springs, Griffin, and Taylor could get us rolling to get us up there.

Posted by: TDawg1 | February 27, 2009 12:24 AM | Report abuse

No doubt. Great start!

Now Canty then Willis then Dockery (provided the cap tooth fairy drops off little help from the DE with the cauliflower-calf) then draft.

Either way, hopefully Albert has just left the building before he ever got there.

Could it be that we got the contract right this time? $55 million is a lot, but over 6 yrs it averages $9 million per yr (not the $12 mil that was previously reported). Also, with $30 mil guaranteed for the first 3 yrs, that's still only avg $10 mil. Finally, the last 3 yrs are for $25 mil. Not sure what the per year break down is, but shouldn't be too bad on the cap. Great job Vinnie! Yeah, I said it.

Redskins call for Canty
Friday, February 27, 2009
Posted By Albert Breer 12:04 AM
The Washington Redskins have contacted the agent for free-agent defensive lineman Chris Canty.

Canty could play tackle or end in Washington's 4-3 defense, having shown the versatility to play inside or out in the Cowboys' 3-4.

I say let's do it too! I don't even care! Sell some jerseys, Danny!

1) Re-sign hall (CHECK)
2) Sign Dockery or Moore, 28.
3) Pick up Canty
4) Trade Springs for 4th Rounder
5) Draft Rey Maualuga with #13 and line depth (O&D) and a change of pace RB with remaining picks.

I know this is cliche`, but good teams are built from the inside out. In other words, this signing won't mean anything if we don't address the Defensive Line in a big way.

At face value, however, I like it. Hall is an incredibly athletic CB in his prime. Good value, in my opinion.

is tank johnson an UFA?? If so then that is a huge play. I wanted the FA to go after him so bad and then it made it worse that the cowboys got him. I agree, huge upside for (relatively) little money.

this goes without saying but DHall is a great sign. Seems like he's been in the league for awhile but he's still only 25. All we need is Springs to stop being stubborn and restructure so he can stay and play center field. That way Landry can raise hell at the line. With a pass rush I think we will be quite the team to watch.

I must be missing something. Hall was dumped by Atlanta because of an exceedingly bad attitude. Then the Raiders cut him because he's couldn't handle the man-to-man coverage. Don't the Skins play a ton of man? Springs is a better corner, and cheaper.

Hey leevi98, you are the fool. I'll give you that Springs is injured and on the old side, but Hall at that price is ridiculous. Again, he was CUT by the Raiders MID-SEASON!!! Because he was bad at man coverage. Moreover, the Skins could have kept Rogers and Springs, picked up a cheaper DB and fix the other issues on the team... of which their are many.. like Dline, Oline, LB etc., etc. And of course we aren't happy. Nothing has gone well in the Snyder regime. Deon, Archuleta? I bet you like those signings too. We should be pissed until Danny the idiot proves us wrong.

Posted by: am81 | February 27, 2009 1:50 AM | Report abuse

totally agree - this deal is great. I also value Rogers more than a lot on this board and think a duo of Hall and Rogers could be great for years to come. Rogers shut down some amazing WRs this season an then dropped off a bit. How quickly we forget he was coming off a mjor surgery. I say cut Springs and sign some mid level FAs with that money. Hall will create turnovers and Rogers is a fantastic tackler for a CB. Great pair.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | February 27, 2009 1:56 AM | Report abuse

So far I'm liking the sound of all of this-- resigning Hall, while pricey, is a good move. He and Carlos will be a solid tandem, and I hope they continue to develop some CB talent through the draft over the next few years.

If we sign Dockery, we fill a huge hole at guard and hopefully we can grab Jason Brown or Brandon Moore for RG while Rinehart develops. Shoot, if we get Willis, that'd be awesome too-- O-Line would be in real good shape while we continue to build through the depth. And Canty? Another solid move.

I'm liking this so far.

Posted by: TDawg1 | February 27, 2009 1:57 AM | Report abuse

The overall point here is that the Skins are doing the same things they always do. Throwing too much money at free agents that, in the end, fail to produce. They don't draft well either. They don't build a cohesive team. This style has failed miserably, and the signing of Hall smells like the same old BS. DAN SNYDER IS THE PROBLEM!!!!

Posted by: am81 | February 27, 2009 1:58 AM | Report abuse

this deal only appears big. It's actually quite fair. It's less than the raiders gave him last year. It's less than asomagha's and equivalent to hayden. I think pretty fair for his skills and age. Plus the skins run a cover 2 and typically provide more help over the top than the raiders so it's not fair to compare them not to mention it's the raiders. Where good players go to die. Not to mention we still have plenty of cap room to sign anyone we want.

Who cares what he did with the Raiders...They suck...he had no locker room no team leaders no offesnse bad players on defense and you wonder why he played bad? C'mon wake up...your only as god as the team around you and Hall played GREAT for us...5 INTS in whats half a season if that? You can't blame him for asking for a release from the Raiders...Plus they needed the cap space to free up cause they need almost a whole team ti fill with so many holes.....You also blame him for a bad attitude in Atlanta...

That's BS the coach was the type of guy that will QUIT at midseason his first year after telling his owner he had a coach 24 hours before he walked...Of course Hall was upset...so was Dunn, Crumpler and Harrington who spoke out for the team.....get your facts straight before blast a guy after you read an espn article from along time ago and blame Hall!

He has a model citizen during his short time in the nation's capital, avoiding the type of temperamental outbursts that prompted the Atlanta Falcons to trade him to Oakland in 2008."

Then he went on his salary drive in DC and played very well.

If the team is lucky, he'll be happy and continue to play well.

But the record is clear--almost ALL free agents the Redskins overpaid for have been disappointments, hurt, or not worth the money.

Let's add to that...Hall had out burts with the Falcons on 2 occasions late in the season amoung many other Falcon teamates who did not believe in or respect their head coach who never even talked to the players and got to know them....They were upset at how bad the coach was running the team....Then he quit at midseason.....

OF COURSE SKINS FANS AREN"T HAPPY. What do we have to be happy about during the Snyder regime? Numerous coaching changes and a team that never competes anymore? The Skins used to be one of the great franchises of the NFL. Almost always in the hunt. What exactly are we supposed to be happy about? The past failures? Or the fact that we may have to look forward to years of crap because Snyder won't let go.

++++This is WAY more exciting than last year's free agency period. So far.

You got THAT right, Nate!!! It hasn't been this exciting around here since they signed Adam Archuletta, Antwaan Randal El and Receiver, The Wide!!! Just great news and these new guys will be superstars!!!

Now we get to imagine how a new batch of overly compensated troublemakers, underachievers, salary crivers, or whirlpool queens will magically change and become THE Salvation the Skins need, in lieu of building a team the way, I dunno, successful franchises do.

They OVERPAID for Hall, probably will greatly overpay JT, in typical panicked moves.

Let's hope they don't overpay for Dockery, Canty, and/or that Seattle Tackle.

Hall is getting overpaid.

Naamdi is getting overpaid as well ... even if he Darrell Green good.

Hall is, at best, a top 10 CB. Realistically, top 15. In Oakland, he was toasted. He's had issues during his years in the league (no need to rehash them).

So lets look at Hall carefully. He plays well at times in ATL where he also gets wrapped in controversy (ATL was a miserable place, to be fair). Because of his obvious talent, he gets paid huge $$$ to play for Oakland. The one place in the league where you don't go if you're interested in winning. As soon as he gets the huge $$$, his plays drops off dramatically. So Al Davis takes his loss and CUTS him!!

Meaning Hall is once again, playing for his next contract. The week after Hall leaves Oakland and comes to DC, the quality of his play jumps. When his pockets were straight, Hall didn't play well. But while playing for his next contract, he was very good on the field and a choirboy off of it.

Now Hall has his $$$ again. Lots more guaranteed money than he got from the Raiders. Does Hall suffer from SPS? There's evidence to say he does.

To me, Hall is getting paid above his talent level ... and on top of it, he's not a low risk guy.

Last point here. My, and probably our, hatred for Dan Snyder twists all thinking on the Skins. He has made this team worse. Perhaps the Skins will have a year or two worth something, but the past, so far, has brought down our expectations. Snyder is Al Davis without the run of success. Would you want to be a Raiders fan right now.... Lastly, I love the Skins and always will. THat's why I am so pissed at what has become of them...

Good analysis zcezcest1. You said it better than I could.

+++GOD Skins fans on here are never Happy...always looking at the glass half empty....they way most talk on here incuding JLC...it's just amazing they have won a game at all over the last 12 years!

What the hell are you smoking? The reason why there are so many half glass cynics here is because for the last twelve years this franchise hasn't been a threat to get to the Superbowl, much less win it. In the previous twelve years they won the Superbowl 3 times.

And stop making stuff up, ranting about his five INTs for the REDKINS...Ooops.. Make it TWO...Making up excuses for his quitting on Atlanta...and of course he quit on the Raidera too...

That's okay, you say, they were a bad team...For what he was paid he had no right to quit on his teammates,.

I hope he is great here, but this is a guy who played down to his surroundings, TWICE. Does that sound familiar? It should. The redskins played down to their opponents last year. Hall should feel right at home.

I want a self starter, a guy who has so much pride he leaves blood on the field even if he hates his coach and the rest of the team stinks...

They signed Hall. And now Snyder can celebrate in his usual way. Put a big ad on Redskins.com selling Hall Jerseys, just as he did when he signed the stiff, Taylor last year.

NOBODY PANIC!!!

DIAMOND DAN WILL NOT LET THERE BE A SALARY CAP IN 2010.

HE WILL SPEND WAY WAY TOO MUCH MONEY THIS OFFSEASON, THEN PAY EVERY BONUS ON THE TEAM NEXT OFFSEASON.

NO NEED TO WORRY DIAMOND DAN HAS IT UNDER CONTROL.
