Zarnell Fitch and Fred Matua Sign On

After releasing injured DL J.T. Mapu, the Redskins have signed DT Zarnell Fitch, who is on the field for this morning's practice. The team also has released OL Kerry Brown and signed guard Fred Matua. With Anthony Montgomery breaking his hand and Brown having suffered a shoulder injury, the team needed bodies on the lines (DEs Chris Wilson and Erasmus James remain out as well).

Fitch is in his first year [correction: third year], and was a free agent out of Texas Christian. He is 6-3, 320 on the Skins updates roster, so he's certainly a big dude. Mapu was signed for depth after DEs Phillip Daniels and Alex Buzbee were lost for the season on the opening day of camp a week ago.

Matua, who is 6-2, weighs 310 and played at USC, spent part of 2006 with the Browns and has bounced around some practice squads.

Former Redskins center Cory Raymer, who lives in the area, is watching practice today. What he's seeing is a practice in which a ton of guys are on the sidelines and a lot are doing light work in shells and shorts. LaRon Landry, Chris Wilson, Anthony Montgomery, Erasmus James and Rocky McIntosh all are working with trainers, Eric Shelton is limping a bit and not taking part; the Redskins have not said he's injured, so we'll keep an eye on that.

While the injuries are mounting, most of them are seen as minor for now. We're well into double-digits now on the list, but that's not uncommon for the first week of camp. The key will be for youngsters to start getting over the problems and back on the field in the next two days to get ready for the Colts game.
